and remembering 9/11 ten years later. the victims, the heroes, the survivors of that fateful day. we re live at ground zero today, friday, september 9th, 2011. narrator: from nbc news, this is a special edition of today america remembers, with matt lauer, live at ground zero and ann curry live from studio 1-a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everybody. welcome to a special edition of today on a friday morning. i m matt lauer in lower manhattan. i m on a balcony overlooking ground zero. ann curry is uptown in studio 1-a. as i say good morning to you i m going to say you may be hearing noise from time to time here from our broadcast site. this is a memorial site now. there is also a lot of construction going on all around us. i think you can say progress continues to be made 24 hours a day. that noise is perfectly understandable, matt. thanks so much. good morning. i know the security was already tight there but now with this new concern about a credible but unconfirmed terror threat, police are ratcheting up their efforts even more throughout new york city and washington, d.c., matt. that s right. officials say intelligence from pakistan points to a plan to explode car or truck bombs here in new york city or in the nation s capital, washington, d.c. authorities are now on the lookout for three possible suspects, although they only have a very general description. we re going to get the latest and, as we said, we ll talk about the threat with the vice president joe biden straight ahead. by the way, take a look at the tower that is rising behind me, one world trade center. it s being called the most complex public works project in american history. and we were given extraordinary access to it. we re going to take you inside that building, that rising building, coming up. looking forward to it. also ahead this morning we re going to get reaction from both sides to last night s speech from president obama as he unveiled his $450 billion jobs plan. the question this morning, was it too little too late? also this morning. did yale university fail to protect a young graduate student. her body was found behind a wall. it would have been her wedding day. the victim s mother is speaking out for the first time this morning in an exclusive live interview. matt? all right, ann, thank you very much. let s begin this friday morning with the terror threat that has the attention of authorities all over washington and new york city. pete, what can you tell us about it? reporter: they heard a trusted source in pakistan picked up word from the u.s. this source was told that three people from there plan to fly here and set off car or truck bombs in new york or war war around this time, around the 9/11 anniversary. it included little else in the way of timing or targets. officials stress they have no ideas whether there is a plot, whether the three people exist or ever came here. there s been an intense effort to try to track this down. it remains unconfirmed. people in washington and new york have been told about it and are told to be extra watchful for anything suspicious. they will tou illegally parked cars. in new york they will be doing more bag inspections on the subways and conducting more checks in tunnels an bridges and all of that may have some impact on traffic. matt? and, pete, you know, i think another reason why they re giving this credibility, connects back to the raid that took the life of osama bin laden, doesn t it? indeed. i think there are three things here. first the fact that the documents they found when bin laden was killed indicated that he wanted to have some kind of an attack on the 9/11 anniversary coming up sunday. secondly, the u.s. has been independently worried that somebody might try to attack the u.s. in retaliation for bin laden s death. and finally officials say this source has been dependable in the past and while they try to confirm this intelligence they believe they have to act as though it is true, matt. all right. nbc s justice correspondent pete williams. thanks very much. with more, here s ann. matt, thank you. we are now joined by joe biden, the vice president of the united states. mr. vice president, good morning. ann, good morning. sir, how concerned are you about this threat to new york city and washington, d.c. this weekend? quite frankly, and i think pete summed it up exactly right. we started the president ordered four months ago when we found information in bin laden s compound after we got him that he wanted an attack on 9/11. we ve been running every single thread to ground. this is the first, the first credible piece of information we ve gotten. we cannot confirm it. we are doing everything within our power. all hands are on deck. but i said your report has it spot on. you once said that the idea of there being a massive attack in the united states like 9/11 is unlikely, end quote. what is most likely at this moment in history in terms of a terror action, mr. vice president? well, ann, the thing we re all most worried about is what they call the lone ranger, a lone actor, not some extremely complicated plan like it took to take down the world trade towers or the plane in shanksville. it doesn t mean they couldn t happen but it s much, much less likely. the lone actor is the more worrisome thing because there are fewer trails to follow, there are fewer leads to move on. but this is this is information from a credible source that indicated this was an intent. we have not been able to confirm, nor does that source confirm who does know who the individuals may be who are trying to find access to the united states. but we re taking it seriously. so what is your advice now to americans who are very concerned to hear this news now leading up to this tenth anniversary? continue your life as normal. be vigilant. be vigilant. continue life as normal. but be vigilant. report. report anything that looks suspicious to you. and you know, we have been through this before in a different circumstance with the car bomb in times square. there are people who are likely to try over the next period of months and years, but the point is that we are using every single asset we can, including local law enforcement, to help thwart the possibility it could happen. mr. vice president, i m going to ask you to please stand by because we want also to talk to you this morning about the jobs plan the president laid out last night but we want to first take a look at a report from nbc s chuck todd about that speech. chuck, good morning. good morning. it was a fiery president that went to the well of the house to plead with congressional republicans to pass his latest idea that jump-start america s flagging economy. you should pass this jobs plan right away. reporter: the president had a message. and to make sure no one missed it, he repeated it 17 times. you should pass it right away. you should pass this bill right away. you should pass it. reporter: the american jobs act which the president formally sends to congress next week calls for tax breaks for companies who hire new workers, who have special incentives for someone who has spent more than six months looking for a job or for hiring veterans. the last thing they should have to do is fight for a job when they come home. reporter: it will extend unemployment benefits for another year. cuts payroll taxes in half for every working american and every small business. the president says that would save the typical family $1500. $1500 that would have been taken out of your pocket, will go into your pocket. reporter: it has programs to build and repair infrastructure. and a plan to modernize 35,000 schools and rehire laid off teachers. there should be nothing controversial about this piece of legislation. everything in here is the kind of proposal that s been supported by both democrats and republicans. and everything in this bill will be paid for, everything. reporter: republicans responded to the president on two fronts. republican congressional leaders were conciliatory but the republican presidential candidates were more critical. rick perry hit the president for the $450 billion price tag saying he s guided by his mistaken belief that we can spend our way to prosperity. mitt romney released a web video that hit the president for taking so long to focus on jobs, 961, by their count. the president anticipated the campaign rhetoric. the next election is 14 months away. and the people who sent us here, the people who hired us to work for them, they don t have the luxury of waiting 14 months. reporter: the selling of this plan begins today. the president goes to richmond, virginia, home of number two house republican eric cantor, and then next week he begins selling it by going to the home state of speaker john boehner. ann. chuck todd, thank you so much. we want to bring back in now the vice president, joe biden. mr. vice president, let s say for a moment that congress comes together and supports the president s plan. when is the earliest that the first job could be created as a result of this plan? well, three to six months this money would be out, ann. you can start rehiring teachers and law enforcement officers immediately. what would happen is your payroll tax would be cut in half. right now everybody collects a pay stub, pays 6.2% into the fica tax. it would be cut by 3.1%. same for businesses. small businessman and you have ten employees, you would save $15,000 a year. immediately if you went out and hired a veteran, on top of that savings you would be able to get a total of $9,000 for hiring a veteran. this is all designed to change the competence level and attitude of people out there because, look, ann, the corporations are flush with money. that s not a criticism. it s good. and the banks have a lot of money to lend. but why aren t they lending it? why aren t they expanding the corporations? there aren t enough jobs because people aren t spending money. you ve got to start a cycle here. you ve got people like mark of moody s saying if in fact this plan was put in effect it would create 9.1 million jobs, increase the gdp by 2%, et cetera, bring down unemployment by a percent. whether that s precise or not, there s nothing in here, nothing in here that republican presidents in the past and mainstream republicans have not supported, including the unemployment plan the president picked which was the georgia plan, a republican plan. that said, mr. vice president, then, is this plan too late? no, no, the plan is not too late. look, it s never too late. i come from a family when there was a recession sitting around the table, ann, my dad or his brothers or sisters, somebody lost a job. and everybody went to bed at night like a lot of americans are tonight looking at the ceiling wondering, god, am i going to be able to live here next month, am i going to have to pick up the phone and call my daughter sarah at the university and say you can t go back next month. this is real life for people. like the president said, presidential politics, we know what that s going to be at the campaign but these people don t have 14 months, they don t have 4 months. we know these things will help them now. mr. vice president joe biden, thank you so much for your time this morning. busy weekend because of 9/11. it is now 7:13. let s go back to matt at ground zero. all right, ann. thanks. appreciate it. now to this weekend s tenth anniversary are 9/11 and the attack on this country. former new york city mayor rudy giuliani was hailed as america s mayor for leading this city s response to the attacks. nice to see you. you, too. i was going to start by saying how is the country and the world different in the ten years after 9/11, and i think maybe the answer is in the question or in the fact that we re sitting here this morning under an increased terror alert. still a target. in many ways it s a very significant reminder that september 11 is not a matter of history. one of the things that could happen with a tenth anniversary is you could start to believe we could put this behind us, but the reality is the same causes, the same threats, the same desire to kill us being fermented in that part of the world is just as great or greater. we have to use september 11th to remind ourselves. this is a real danger, we have to be alert to. do we need to deal with an attack or prevent attack? yes. no question about that. that credit goes to president bush, president obama, our intelligence service, military, actions in iraq, afghanistan yield us a lot more intelligence than we ever got before. intelligence services are better organized. foreign countries cooperate with us more. i m not sure before september 11th we would have gotten information like this. this would have been something that maybe we would have gotten, maybe we wouldn t have gotten. going back now to september 11th, 2001, you got out on the streets very quickly. you got on television to reassure the people of this city that the government was functioning and operational. you were walking through the streets telling people put their masks on. you did an awful lot right and you got a lot of credit for it. i m curious over these ten years, has there been one thing that s haunted you? that you wish you had done differently. sure, anticipated it. that specific type of attack, the scope of it. our services were, i think, terrific. they were the biggest in the country. probably were half as big as they had to be, particularly in the first day or two. we had to play catch up. placed thereafter the 93 bombings, do you wish you had put that anywhere else? anywhere it was, the command center was going to be in the middle of street. we had a virtual command center we developed in 2000 for the y2k situation. the 911 call center was half as big as it should be. we lost half of the 911 calls because we had a 911 center that was configured for a model that was not nearly as great as what happened. so all lessons that have now been learned? i think mayor bloomberg and commissioner kelly has learned all the lessons and new york city is safer now. god forbid something happens, probably something will go wrong. something like this, you can never be perfectly prepared for. look over your shoulder you see what used to be referred to as freedom tower. now one world trade center. rising about 80 floors. it s going to become another 20 to become the tallest building in this country. if the world trade center buildings were symbolic as a target, do you worry that that s even more symbolic as a target? no. i don t think you can live your life worrying. my option would have been to keep this all memorial. that s what you wanted. and put that building somewhere else, ten blocks away, not because i m afraid to put it there but because i m very emotionally attached to this. when i look down there i look at where i last saw chief gantsy or father judge. i know exactly the spot. i wonder how they died. i saw them 20, 30 minutes before they died. my emotional attachment to this probably doesn t make me a great observer of this. i think it s beautiful. it s a beautiful building. it will never replace the other towers. i watched them going up from that building. i had undercover police officer in that building and watched them build the twin towers. this is something that probably affects me more than i even realized. rudy giuliani, thanks for spending time with us this morning. thank you for covering it. our pleasure. once again, here s ann. matt, thank you. seven deaths are now being blamed on the remnants of tropical storm lee. the storm produced heavy rains that led to widespread evacuations and historic flooding from maryland to new england. al roker is in the flood zone in pennsylvania. al, good morning. good morning, ann. we re just west of wilkebury, pennsylvania. we re in a town called back mountain, pennsylvania. there s normally no water coming over this spillway. now you can see thousands and thousands of gallons of water pouring every sect into what s normally a dormant creek. it s rushing into the susquehanna. it reached 38.8 feet. the record, 40.9 feet setback in 1972 during hurricane agnes. by later this morning we expect it to drop to 38 feet. and by saturday, be under 29 feet. now, all along this river, from pennsylvania into new york, there have been thousands and thousands of people evacuated. in this area alone, 100,000 people. binghamton, new york, 10,000 people being evacuated. president obama signed emergency declarations for new jersey, new york, and for pennsylvania, as well, making these areas eligible for disaster relief. but again, schools are closed, businesses are closed, roads are closed, all the bridges leading to downtown binghamton have been closed down, as well. so we continue to be affected by this for at least another 24 hours. the good news is while there could be some pockets of heavy rain of about an inch or so, the really heavy rain is just about over. that s what s going on around good morning to you. i m meteorologist christina loren looking at sunol. we have cloud cover. the temperature this is morning are mild, 59 degrees inland, 58 by the bay, by noon we ll hit about 73 degrees inland and then rounding out the day at 84. overall we re looking forward comfortable conditions into the weekend. temperatures climb a little bit for saturday. we re going to bump your numbers up to 88 degrees in san jose, then drop back down to 80 on sunday. and that s your latest weather. we ll look at the tropics in the next half hour. ann? al, thank you so much. an employee at a power substation is the likely cause of a massive power outage that has effected millions of people in california, arizona, and mexico. an event that left most of san diego powerless. nbc s george lewis is there this morning. george, good morning. reporter: good morning, ann. power officials have not expected to have everything switched off by now but at 3:30 this morning, 12 hours after the blackout began, full power was restored to san diego. as the blackouts spread, fire and police personnel were put on full emergency alert. fire crews had to free some people trapped in elevators. with traffic signals knocked out many southern california streets were gridlocked. there were huge lines at the few service stations still able to pump gas. the power outage extending from yuma, arizona, all of the way to the california coast and even into mexico. this is a major system disturbance, and customers will have to be patient and really put safety first. reporter: the nuclear power station shut down automatically as a safety precaution and remains offline this morning. what caused the blackout? apparently a technician replacing some faulty equipment on a high-voltage transmission line did something wrong. the initial instance of this looks like an operator error that happened in arizona and that started the series of events. reporter: some southern californians turned the crisis into a party. in downtown san diego, they gathered in an area known as a gas lamp quarter. you have to pull yourself together and think it could be worse than this. reporter: this morning the san diego airport is open as are most private businesses. schools remain closed. this whole thing points out how delicate the grid is, and there will be a full investigation. ann? i ll wait a bit. all right. mm. refreshing. good morning everybody. 7:26 right now. i m jon kelley. one year ago today a fireball bursting from a gas pipe changed the landscape of san bruno and the lives of those who live there. marla tellez is live in san bruno where there will be a remembrance ceremony this evening. good morning, marla. reporter: good morning, jon. we re live at skyline college in san bruno. this is the spot where tonight s one-year remembrance ceremony is taking place. the impacted area is the glenn view area. that s the neighborhood that was hit. growth is apparent today with seven homes under construction. 38 were wiped out by last year s blast and eight people killed. neighbors have teamed up with the city to make tonight s one-year remembrance ceremony happen. again, it s at skyline college, it gets started at 6:00. then sunday, the city is hosting a one-year gathering, that one is taking place at san bruno city park from 1:00 to 4:00. there s going to be music, food and activities for the kids. city officials want people to know that if you plan to attend tonight s remembrance ceremony here at skyline you should get here by 5:30. marla tellez in san bruno, thank you. time to check the weather. christina is here. sound like it s windy. a little foggy and windy at the coast this morning. 54 in san francisco, we re mostly cloudy all the way inland. the sun will come out i think by about 10:30 in the east and south bay along the peninsula 12:30, 1:00. 68 in san francisco, 84 degrees in san jose. and 90 in places like livermore. we head throughout weekend we re going to bump you up saturday, dropping you back down to 80 inland sunday. half an hour later two accidents on the side of the road. southbound 880 out of san leandro. slowing because of the accidents, earlier in lanes, now cleared. 680 southbound. i heard about a five-car accident at geary that might cause the slowing on the right side of the screen. here is a look at the toll plaza. it s friday. it s not clear. not at all. thank you. we ll have another update for you in a half hour. more coverage on the san bruno explosion during a special broadcast. 7:30 now on this friday morning, september 9, 2011. you re looking live at ground zero in new york city. the pentagon also just outside of washington, d.c. and shanksville, pennsylvania, places that will forever be a memorial for the fallen and a shrine to the heroes of 9/11 as america remembers the terror attacks that shocked us ten years ago. inside studio 1-a i m ann curry. matt is joining us from ground zero this morning. matt? ann, i am overlooking the site of the memorial. it s really stunning, i have to tell you. it s made up of two massive reflecting pools with 30-foot waterfalls and the names of the victims of the attacks on 9/11 here in new york and pennsylvania and at the pentagon have been etched around the bases of each of those pools. the memorial will be dedicated on sunday. it opens to the general public on monday. the museum, by the way, on this site is still under construction. it s going to be located some 70 feet below ground. the building right there is the visitor center that stands above it. in the museum there will be parts of the towers, including the so-called survivors stairs. there will be gear use bid the firefighters that responded to the tragedy and other artifacts. ultimately the final resting place for the unidentified remains of the fallen. in the background there you can see that crews are also hard at work on one world trade center. once completed, it will be the tallest building in america. coming up, we ll have a private tour of that remarkable structure that is rising out of the ruins here at ground zero, ann. looking forward to that report, matt. thank you. we begin this half hour with the tragic murder of annie le. a medical student at yale university killed by a man who worked with her on campus. in a moment her mother vivian speaks out for the first time in an exclusive live interview. but first, nbc s jeff rossen has the latest on this story. jeff, good morning. good morning. this really was a brutal attack that s that sent shockwaves around yale. ray clark now admits he killed annie le and stuffed her body in the wall of a university research lab. now annie s family is suing yale saying the school didn t do enough to protect her. it began as a bizarre mystery. a young doctor ral student working in the lab simply vanished. soon the story of annie le would morph into one of yale s most tragic times and the timing was just as awful. annie was just one week from her wedding. disappear in the middle of the day with lots of people around. very unsettling. reporter: police and the fbi combed the campus for clues. then on what would have been annie s wedding day, a gruesome discovery. annie s body stuffed behind the wall in the lab s basement, badly beaten and strangled. two years later her mother is opening up for the first time. she s very special to me. and she s very beautiful. and she was like the most important in my family. my only daughter my family. how are you doing? every day i try to tell myself i think she s still with me. when someone asks me, how many children you have? i always say i have two, even though she already pass away. reporter: police moved in on a suspect quick. ray clark. he worked with annie in the yale lab. police say clark sexually assaulted annie before killing her. clark pled guilty, sentenced to 44 years in prison. when i see mr. clark in the court, i think like he didn t want to do that to my daughter because sometimes like an looev gets in the mind. you still don t know why he did it? no. reporter: now annie s family has filed this lawsuit against yale claiming ray clark had a violent propensity against women and the school should have known he posed a potential threat, alleging the university fostered an atmosphere of sexual harassment and sexual assaults that emboldened clark. i want yale to change the lack of observation of students. in the past yale has denied tolerating sexual harassment. in this case school officials told us there is no basis for the civil suit. yale had no information indicating that raymond clark was capable of committing this terrible crime, and no reasonable security measures could have prevented his unforeseeable act. this lawsuit serves neither justice nor annie s memory. yale says after the attack it maiden hansments to security on campus but, ann, it claims students has always been safe. jeff, thank you so much this morning. annie le s mother vivian is joining us exclues sexclusivelyg out for the first time, along with her attorney, joe tacopina. good morning. this is the first time you ve spoken out publicly. what do you want to say to the world about what happened to your little girl? i want to say to the world that i love annie, i miss her a lot. and i want the world to know that she is a smart girl and she studied in the library and she will become a very good scientist and helpful to the country. i m missing her every day. i don t know how to you just said that she would have been a good scientist to help the world, the country. there s a loss not just for you, you re saying, but also to the world. do you blame yale university for what happened to your daughter? i come here for my daughter because i don t want to anybody be killed like my daughter. i want yale to have more protection for the students and they have to change the security system to be better. and yale had let it happened and they have to be responsible for that. you re saying that yale let it happened because it didn t have what you re saying as adequate security to protect your daughter. joe, so what is it that this lawsuit will is alleging? is it what is the basis of saying that this university is responsible given the fact that the man who is now admitting to this crime has never had anything prior on his record? he did not have a criminal record. he didn t have a criminal record, ann, but he had problems within the university. yale longstanding well-documented problem at yale for being there s a cultural tolerance there for allowing sexual harassment on women. there is a federal investigation of yale right now for this very same these are the same offenses. students filed a lawsuit under title ix, equal protection statute, where they re asking the federal authorities and the federal authorities launched an investigation against yale, looking into the allegations of failing to secure and protect women. they had prior notice about him. they had prior notice why do you say that there wassed a quite prior notice? we just saw this statement that we just saw in jeff s report that t. was the university s response. but in this particular case, it is not culpable. how do you argue in this particular case yale university was culpable? [ female announcer ] the 10 point safeguard check from walgreens. there s a way to stay well. we welcome you back to ground zero in lower manhattan. the new one world trade center building behind me formally known as freedom tower is still under construction. already reached to 80th floor. we were given a private tour of what will soon be the tallest building in this country. you have a little bit of your life and soul embedded in that building. we are moving on. we re making it bigger, better, and stronger. i feel like i ve accomplished something really big. reporter: the men and women rebuilding ground zero understand their work is much more than a job. every bolt, every beam, every floor supports the weight of history. i begin my tour in the footprint of the ones historic buildings with architect. this forest of trees will grow 70 feet tall. all of them oak, except one. the survivor tree, pulled from the rubble at ground zero. it looks like it was a tree but it was nursed back to health. this try is thriving and surviving. reporter: when he was just 34, he beat out over 5,000 entrants in the design competition for the memorial. his winning vision set were the original towers once stood. 2 30-foot waterfalls into darkness, he calls it, we flekting absence. what do you want them to think as they look down in this? what i wanted to do is really create a place where people could have a moment of silence. emptiness, but emptiness full of meaning. can you show me a glircht of what it s going to look like? reporter: yet to be revealed are the victim s names engraved in panels surrounding the pools. here are some of the ladder companies. reporter: while the pools are meant to honor the dead, it s the building towering beside them, one world trade center that will honor the living. you look at this thing, you have another 30 floors to go but it s going up at a pace about a floor a week. right? incredible. how high are we going? the top, 76. i think it s going to give you a new sense of a new town town. i head up with chris ward, executive director of the port authority in new york and new jersey that oversees construction. what s being done to make it as safe as possible? well, what you re looking at is incredible soaring, beautiful lobby that has inherent in its design safety and security. this is a blast wall that was 18,000 pounds per square inch in concrete, to stop anybody from bringing a truck bomb in. these steel girders are 60 feet tall and ways 70 tons. up we go. i want to say this is truly going to be the exclamation point of a new york city skyline. how tall is it going to be? all of the way up, it s going to be 1776. to the roof it s going to be 1356. it s going to be 3.2 million square feet. it will be the tallest skyscraper in america. reporter: touted as new gold standard in skyscrapers, the top half will be shaped like a perfect octagon, 20 floors of glass, it will also have some of the fastest elevators in the world. but all this comes at a cost. an estimated $3.2 billion and years of delays. they re doing an incredible job, and yet some people are going to say it s been ten years and they re surprised it s not done by now. how do you answer that? we have built the most complex public works project in america s history. this tower that we re going to be on was built on top of a subway train. they re working every single hour of every single day. reporter: and to move forward, they needed to put aside years of in fighting among politicians, designers, and the victim s family. 68, turn right, when you do, look what you see. wow. wow. like an unobstructed view. this could be your corner office. reporter: unlike the old world trade center with a framework of external steel, this building rises to an armored concrete core. if something were to happen to that structure right there, it doesn t jeopardize the integrity of the building. exactly. it was designed to stop that cascading catastrophic failure that everybody saw on 9/11. okay. so we re now going to look at the outer stairways. comfort of home. yes. you have a problem with heights this is probably where the tour ends. yes. it s a workout to reach the top. a dizzying ladder winds upward. from now on we re on ladders? ladders. reporter: if you need a break you can duck into the subway, sandwich shop that is. it rises with the building. i m buying lunch, guys. so come on, belly up, all right? there are over 3500 workers at ground zero. many of whom feel deeply connected to this site. brian lions came down town on 9/11 to find his kid brother michael, a firefighter, who never made it home. you ve been down here basically every day since. why? at that moment i made a commitment to myself i wanted to find my brother, find everybody else, and rebuild this place bigger and better than everybody before. new york city and america can t be defeated. wow. 76. right now. 30 to go. wow. wow. that s a lot to think about. reporter: a soaring testament to our nation s resilience wrapped up in concrete, glass, and seals. the day you turn the key and they open this place, what do you think it s going to mean to not only new york city but america? i think it s going to be just an incredible statement of pride. this is what we do. we build, we recover, rwe creat a place to live. that s who we are. quite a view from up there. the tower will be ready for business in 2013. one world trade center already has two major tenants. they say they will have no problem filling the rest. we re going to be back on a friday morning right after this. yes. and your dad was one of the heroes, and he was one of the heroes who went to the world trade center that day, wasn t he? yeah. a lot for a 10-year-old to have to handle. reporter: so we did what we could to ease the pain. this is joe torre. for seven years you have been wanting to learn how to skate? hi, tara. hi. look. katelyn, jennifer lopez. reporter: wishes were granted. celebrities stepped up. patrick. reporter: broadway star, ballplayers, pop divas, and olympians left these kids with a reason to smile amid their tears. kevin hickey, katelyn, vanessa calderon, jackie bauer and patrick hughes are all with us now. ladies, gentlemen, it s great to have you here. thank you for joining us. i really appreciate it. such an easy question, may be harder to answer. terrible weekend coming up? it s overwhelming to see this. this is an enormous project. got to thank them. got to thank everybody for this. amazing. vanessa? very heartbreaking to know that this happened, but we have a memory now. we can come and see where everything happened. they wanted this to mean something to you guy, kevin. when you look down at it, does it touch a chord with you? does it resonate with you? i don t know. it s really a beautiful thing. i didn t expect it to be this nice, you know, after whatever happened, construction, look at it now. you know? it s beautiful. you guys have all had to find ways to cope with pain over these ten years. anything stand out in your lives that made the difference between you getting through it and not getting through it? i think a lot of it was just thinking about my family and us all coming together and really realizing, like, we did not want to just be complacent, we did not just want to crumble and be sad. of course it was a loss and it was horrible, but to really, you know, in his honor, move on, in his honor, be a better person, in his honor, you know, marvel at things like this and really appreciate it. i think that s kind of that. katelyn, you do something every year on 9/11. yeah. what we always do is have a balloon and we always send it up to my mom every year on 9/11. you say a little prayer and train station memorial and go there and put a little teddy bear. something we do every year. kevin, i watched the video of you ten years ago. it still tears me up. i know where there were times that was tough for you, that video. it hung over your life. it did. it did. when you look back now and you see that 10-year-old, does he seem a world away? more than a world away. you know, it s unbelievable to see it now because i haven t watched it in probably a good six or seven years, you know? it s crazy. unbelievable. patrick, you re an artist. i know it s very important to you. did you find some solace in art throughout the years? that was my escape. i used that just to get away from it all and stop thinking about it. that was what i did to cope with it. you and kevin have something in common, in that you both designed tattoos. yes. they were dedicated to the memory of 9/11. we ve got some images of those. patrick, tell me about yours. well, i have one on my back that is of the towers. and then i have one on my arm that is more of a memorial to my father, the mountains, just the scenery to it, all sort of relates to what we ve done together. kevin, you have one on your side. and it s a poem. if i can read it, it says, if tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, i d walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. yes. i mean, i know that was something that you found at your home. yes. we have it on a phone right out on the driveway. and i looked at it and i knew right away i wanted to get that tattoo. that was the first thing i thought. beautiful. is there something you want people to know about you and it s we can t paint with a broad brush, but, katelyn, is there something that people need to know about you as a group on this tenth anniversary? thunderstorms, isolated activity continues into sunday. temperatures fall to 80 degrees. better day for outdoor plans inland. george w. bush and his reflections on 9/11. but first, this is today on nbc. back here at ground zero. as america remembers 9/11, president george were bush was commander in chief on that faithful day ten years ago and the terror attacks shaped his presidency. when i sat down with him last november to talk about his time in office he shared his reflections on that day a-day he says redefined his job. talk about the problems becoming your responsibility. it was a tuesday, september 11th, 2001. yeah. i have a lot of memories that day. it was andy card whispering in my ear. you were in a school in florida. he was. andy said, the second plane hit the world trade center. america is under attack. my first reaction is anger. how dare they do this to america. and then i looked at the kids and their innocence in contrast to the evil of the attackers became apparent to me and i just knew my job was to protect them. you had just been given that news and you sat there and it was seven minutes. that s right. i made the decision not to jump up and create a chaotic scene. then all of a sudden the cell phones are ringing. the noise and press in the back of the room. right. it clarified to me that people were going to be watching my reaction. the reaction of the leader is essential in the first stage of any crisis. you gave an order at some point during that morning. there was still chaos. yeah. nobody knew if there were other planes. you had to give an order that the u.s. military had the authority to shoot downey plane, whether it was a cessna or a commercial airliner that did not respond to commands to land. right. talk to me about that order. it was very intense because to get at it s difficult to getting a rate information. and therefore, the only safe course of action was to say, no airplanes and any airplane that shows up that does not respond to flighter escort would get shot down. can you imagine the pilot in the cockpit of a fighter being told shoot down. that american airliner goes down if they do not do something. i would not imagine that. yet it needed to be done in order to protect the country because we were watching killers use our own assets to destroy american life. and it was a difficult order to give. it was the right order at the time but it was a difficult one to give. you went to new york city and you went to ground zero. i did. and you stood on that rubble and just describe the moment to me. there was not only soot but debris, water, like you were walking into hell. there was a palpable sense of revenge and anger. i m trying to be the comforter and these guys are looking at me like, are you going to go get these guys or not? george. call meg georing me george. not mr. president, george. i was overwhelmed by the anger and emotion. i got on the rubble and standing next to bob beckwitt saying, listen, we appreciate your service and this, that, and the other i can hear you. and it wasn t kind of a soft we can t hear you, i can hear you. i can hear you. the rest of the world hears you and the people and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon. it was a spontaneous moment that kind of captured the mood. and we are back in a moment on a friday morning. this is today on she s in a relationship. tempt was canceled, they got jason ritter back. let s talk about that, jason ritter was on the event. you re so excited that he s going to play your love interest. i know you they ll tell news their own words. i can t wait to hear from them. also ahead, the waterlogged east coast battered by recent tropical storms. president obama has declared a state of emergency in pennsylvania. the susquehanna river overflowed the banks and poured on to the streets. then important health advice. what your body is trying to tell you from cracks in the corner of your mouth to dark lines on your nails. we ll tell you what it could mean regarding more serious health conditions. first, we have a look at the top story. in the news today, unconfirmed al qaeda terror threat has u.s. officials hunting down new information this morning just days after the tenth anniversary of 9/11. officials received intelligence that al qaeda may be planning to blow up bridge or tunnels in new york city and the nation s capital. authorities say the threat is specific and credible. but they emphasize that it is not concerned. earlier on today matt sat down with former new york city major rudy giuliani and asked him about that current terror threat just days ahead of the 9/11 anniversary. in many ways it s a very significant reminder that september 11 is not a matter of history. one of the things that could happen with the tenth anniversary is you could start believe we could put this behind us. but the reality is the same causes, the same threats, the same desire to kill us being per meanted in that part of the world is just as great or greater. so we have to use september 11 to remind ourselves it s a real danger. he also told matt the country is much better prepared now for an attack than we were ten years ago. president obama is urging congress to pass his jobs bill and to, quote, stop the political circus. during his address to congress last night the president pitched a $447 billion jobs plan that relies heavily on payroll tax cuts and new spending. the president did not give an estimate of exactly how many jobs the bill would create but he did add that it will not worse the federal deficit. more flooding may be on the way for parts of the oath coast from maryland to massachusetts. the remnants of tropical storm lee has forced more than 100,000 people from their homes in pennsylvania as rivers swell to near record levels and deluge streets. officials are warning residents flood waters may be filled with toxins and to be avoided. 11 deaths have been blamed on the storm lee since it came ashore last week. it has been a hot dark night for the american southwest and northern mexico when millions were left without power. officials say the outage was likely triggered accidentally by an arizona utility worker. the outage nearly halted san diego freeways and air traffic and desert residents were left without much needed air conditioning in the summer heat. this morning power has been fully restored to the san diego area. and officials say they expect to make significant progress in other areas by this arch. and a terrifying moment of survival caught on cell phone video in northern russia. a polar bear that found itself in a residential area pounced on local woman. the woman did manage to actually walk away from that attack but her clothes were almost ripped off by the bear. it is now 9:04. we re going to head back to al in pennsylvania for a check of the weather. all right, savannah, thanks so much. again, the flooding here, a big deal. 40.9 feet is the record back in 1972. hurricane agnes here in the susquehanna valley area, the wyoming valley, they called it. the good news is the rivers are starting to recede. but those folks who are out of their homes still don t know when they re going to be allowed back in yet. let s check your weather, show you what s happening. rainfall amounts basically anywhere from three to five everythinge inches of rain yesterday. today you canee nowhere near the heavy concentrated areas of rain that we see just scattered showers all around the region and, in fact, we do have flood warnings and flood watches for rivers stretching from the delmarva peninsula up into new england. the good news is the rainfall amounts are generally going to be relatively light. we could see some local pockets of one to two inches of rain. but for the most part it s going to be a half inch or less. that will put a lot less pressure on rivers all throughout the northeast. good morning to you we have good air quality at the coast range. we ll all be back in the good range as we head through saturday and sunday. today, warmer in the north bay by 85 degrees today. 68 degrees in san francisco. not too bad in san jose. 84 degrees. we ve got the giants right here on nbc bay area tonight as they take on the dodgers. yeah, you can catch that game right here. as we head through your weekend a. chance of thunderstorms on x. just cover it up. huh. a roll cover.fancy. that stuff will make your day. toilet paper that nice? think about all the possibilities. you want to start with something that you are not just passionate about, you need to be passionate about making the business work. take for example we had a woman that we profiled in this october issue who started a pooper scooper business. she s not passionate about a pooper scooper but passionate about making the business work. she now goes and cleans tons of people s yards. 300 clients, 7 people working for her the other part of this equation about imagining it, think about how it fits into your life. for her she had a big job where she traveled, now she has control of her own life, runs her own business, makes her own hours. it really works for her. part of it also imagining is being open to opportunity. that means take your idea and think about it in every way possible. what could it become? could it become a website? could it bb a bricks and mortar? that way when opportunity comes knocking you re ready to answer that door. research, to compare to see what the market is like, competition? research means finding a mentor, number one. great place to get 13 really thousand very professional people are there and resources for you. you want to also start local. so that means go to your local business, the commerce, you know. chamber of commerce. chamber of commerce. you want to go to community colleges. you want to talk to everybody. what if they steal your idea? chances are they won t. one of the other women we profiled, she started a makeup not a makeup, but skin care line for tweens. one of the key people she met in building a business is someone she talked to on an airplane. that is how it gets going. other people have the ideas but you ve got to make it happen. networking is important. that s part of the research. networking, starting local, talk to everybody. you say planning. everybody needs a business plan, especially if you present it to someone. business plans can be daunting. great resources. small business association, you can go online. they is all kinds of stuff but your business plan needs to include what your strategies are, what your sales and marketing plan, day-to-day costs. the other thing is to plan for to pay yourself. factor that into your overall plan because after all, this is a business. but if this is your first time trying, small business, how do you get the know how or the experience even to present or prepare a business plan? avenue around 3:30 when he was hit. the shuttle bus driver cooperated with the officers and was not cited. the driver was not impaired. funeral services will be held today for a well-known apple engineer killed after he and his horse were hit from behind from a pickup truck. it will be alt oak hill cemetery in san jose: the 48-year-old was riding with friends on the shoulder on saturday night when he was hit. both hoy and the horse were killed. the truck s driver says he didn t see them until it was too late. he was not arrested. hoy s to talk with want ttalk w the county supervisor to [people caughing] now to our class of 2020 series, following a group of children from their first day of kindergarten to high school graduation. it s start of the new school year and kids just started fourth grade. along with challenging new subjects they ll be hearing a lot about a day in history that happened before most of them were born. today national correspondent natalie morales talked to the kids about the tenth anniversary of september 11th and what it means to them. i can t believe you guys are going into the fourth grade. reporter: the end of summer is near. one last chance for a play date before school starts. jordan, lauren, and eileen look forward to their first day of school, they will be surrounded by reminders of a past and day too young to remember but old enough to know that it will never be forgotten. pictures are beyond belief. it felt like there was an explosion of some kind here at the pentagon. somerset county airport confirmed the crash of a large plane north of that airport. reporter: on september 11th, 2001, lauren s mom was already 11 months pregnant. makes me think what kind of world am i bringing my world into in. reporter: lauren was born two months after the attacks. i remember cutting out the headlines as you do for their baby book and it was all about al qaeda and i kept thinking i ve got to find a good positive headline to put in her bay be i book and there wasn t one. so i thought, it is what it is. this is, you know, this is the day she ll remember. oh, my god! reporter: as lauren and their classmates grew up they learned more about the day that changed history. and i asked them who osama bin laden was, and they said the guy who planned an attack on the twin towers. they told me that bad people could go into planes and kill the pilot and sort of purposely steer the plane toward the building. and it collapsed were in 2007 lauren s parents took her to the place where the world trade center once towered over manhattan. we went and visited ground zero. and we explained what happened. i think she felt the intensity of it. most of the people were all sad and they were laying flowers down. i think about our class of 20 20 a 20 and the year that a lot of them were born, around 9/11. reporter: while that was not part of the lesson the principal says it has changed the way teachers and students look at the world in the classroom. they re more tuned into the issues that are global and the families are, at least, and it really has even even the school and our community has really turned its eye on how what role do we have in the world. reporter: last may lauren and her classmates were watching television when president obama closed another chapter in this story of 9/11. the united states has conducted an operation that killed osama bin laden, the leader of al qaeda. reporter: for the kids what happened next was thrilling and confusing. they celebrated that somebody died, they were like, oh, yay, he died. but to celebrate that somebody died. i was a little bit at the same time i wasn t. welcome to your fout grade year. reporter: today jordan and his classmates are back in school ready to tackle new challenges in english and math and science, but they don t need a history lesson to know that september 11th changed their lives even before they were born. not that it s stuck in my head but i know about it. whenever you see it, you know. it s all around, yeah. what a weekend we are all preparing for. so interesting, ten years have passed but i think for all of us americans, it s still that emotional connection. it still feels raw in a way, particularly when we see these kids who were born around this hard time in our country but also all the stories that kids who have lost parents on 9/11. it s good to remember but it s difficult to remember. uplifting. i spoke with a man who lost his wife in the pentagon. and we are in it together. and around this time you re able to hug, you re able to touch a friend, and it reminds you of the things that are so important. at this time when we have such an environment, it reminds us that we are in it together. my dad was in the army for 30 years. this is our country. we have to stick together. we shouldn t look at tragedy for that to remind us, but it does. and i think that s the most important thing at this point. it does. even if you do shed a tear or you feel that pang, you know, nearly 2,000 people that passed away, they deserve our tears and our remembrance. fourth graders, you know that there are good children out there and that s our future. we re living for them. we ll be back with more memories in a moment. but this is today on nbc. america will spend the entire weekend remembering september 11th 2001 and the past decade that day has changed our world in so many ways. tamron, i know you and i and reporters have met many families along the way who have lost someone. we know we carry their stories in our hearts as all of america does. nbc news will be covering the event this weekend. it will be an emotional journey for all of us. look back at some of the images from that day etched in all of our minds and that we will never forget, nor should we. have a good weekend. we leave you with these images of 9/11. great harm has been done to us. we have suffered great loss. on september 11, 2001, new york city was viscously attacked in an unprovoked act of war. what we have called ground zero, but which i call ground hero. usa, usa, usa, usa. this is the day when all americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. none of us will never forget this day. great. here s one, we re skipping that one. okay, do you really think those pants are flattering? here s the thing. there s a way that you can do this. if your husband is wearing baggy or bad-looking pants and you don t, you re about to walk out the door and you re going somewhere. isn t there a nice way to say, i love that shirt but i bet the blue pants would go better than the tan ones you re wearing? now that jay has some favorite things that you re not crazy about? he watches the show on occasion, so i d rather we ll keep this going. yeah, you know, frank, frank puts on a pair of jeans and a white shirt and nobody looks better. but he does have a couple of track suits that drive cassidy and i crazy. and he knows which ones they are. but he s so comfortable in them. they re cozy. i know, but oh, my gosh, they are bad. here s another one, please watch the kids, don t forget that. you re asking them to do something and then you re adding all sorts of but/ifs. really what we re sounding like is their mother, not their lover. and anything that starts off with did you? no. but there s a new study out there that does say friends hold such a key role in your life. and a lot of women would rather spend time with their girlfriends. it doesn t even matter what is happening. sit around on the couch and talk and have popcorn and stuff with your girlfriends than with their partner? than with their partner. a third, said they had more fun with their girlfriends. the all right. but they say that we, we do, we do need that kind of time, just to hang out with girlfriends. you do need that time. i think one thing especially in a long-term relationship. if you still have fun together, if you still laugh, there s hope for you. you know? i ve been through some tough times in my marriage. the one thing frank and i have always been able to do is laugh. and he thinks i m hysterical and i think he is. and thank god. thank god. because you know, it just heals, it heals a lot of things. you re right. it does say not if you re laughing at the fat rear end, don t laugh at those kinds of things, just laugh in general. you know. and yet another study, out of california, san diego says women who had active sex lives especially in their 60s, 70s and 80s there s still time for me, uh-huh they have a better quality of life. they re happier. what do they mean by active? i don t know what it means. but it says, 70% of women in their 60s say they have some sexual activity in the last six months. okay. with someone? i mean these are the things you have to ask, if it s a real study. you know? come on. so i know what we re dealing with here. in their 70s, the number dropped. 57%. of women in their 70s, 57%. but enough about betty white. and in their 80s, 31%. they say it s about connecting with someone. they just think they are. and if they think they are, then god bless them. you re so ridiculous. i don t know i say nothing. there s another new study out, thank god. enough with these studies. they say eat less, if you want to eat less, use the hand that you re not proficient with. say you re right-handed? or did you see it as more of a peaceful time? i see as peaceful. we re reflecting what we ve been through the past ten years. we ve learned to come together more so as a nation and i think it shows how strong we are. and you kept the memory of your husband, and your daddy alive in lovely ways. you had little books made about, from people saying, i knew your dad. uh-huh. that s so lovely. you want to keep them alive in your heart and your memory. jamie, when it first of all, we just need to point out one important note here. you re wearing she has a justin bieber br e bracelet on and she s praying justin is watching your show. when your mom was telling you the anniversary is coming up. what were you thinking about when this was approaching? i was thinking about what really happened. and i was just trying to understand what happened to our country on 9/11. do you feel like you know your dad more from these books? because people are writing their descriptions of him. and uh-huh. sweet. that s really sweet. and kelly, you lost your husband in the flight over shanksberg? flight 99 into the tower. the first flight that hit the tower. that s right, forgive me. you have a joyous time coming up, because it s your daughter s birthday coming up. she was born two days later. we had the death of him and the birth of her. what conflicting emotions. what are you feeling with the anniversary coming up? for me, it kind of brought you know, i kind of moved ahead. i ve been living a good life. and i got remarried. but this anniversary brings it back and it just brings, i see everything is in the papers again. it s reliving the pain. and missing him again. and you both remarried. i know that that s also kind of a, it s a tricky emotion, i think to have. because you re obviously mourning the loss of a man you cared so much about. but you were lucky enough to find love again. yes, tell us about that. absolutely. it s so nice that we have, i have these two children of mine who are the legacies of my late husband. but i ve been able to find love again and that s really special, what i ve been able to have an opportunity and have two more children with my now-husband. i think it would be hard for a new partner, knowing that that, the specter is always there, the memory is always there. you found two men that let you grieve and you can speak about him. that s so important, isn t it? you can t have somebody resenting the memory of another person. well you know, it takes a special person to be able to appreciate that and understand that. how do you tell your daughter about her late father? just so that she doesn t miss out on knowing him? we have a lot of videos, she has an older sister with him and her older sister. she has, he was a drummer and he s a great dancer and i think she got his rhythm. she has his legs and we talk about how she s similar to him. do you talk about this in school? is this one of those things that come up and kids want to know about you and what happened? we had a show and tell once and i brought a snow globe that reminded me of him because he died in new york. so, my mom got a snow globe here and i brought it to school and told them about it. i just think it s interesting to watch, just kind of happiness come out of this. the joy from the ashes. we were so heartbroken when all of this happened. do you sometimes carry guilt with feeling i have a good life now, does that happen, jill? no, i don t think i have guilt. most people have some kind of tragedy at some point in their life or conflict they have to deal with. this is ours and we ve kind of overcome in a way without forgetting. and i have a special gift that i was given. because i was three months pregnant at the time when my husband died. so we all kind of have to make the best of what we have. is there a bond? in people magazine, they showed a spread. is there a bond with the moms and kids through that? absolutely. i found it comforting to have people going through the same thing at the same time. when i thought i was going crazy. because you thought you were the only one? yes. and there is a camp as well called children of 9/11. did either of you girls go do that? no. jenna bush the other day had, on our show, on an earlier hours had a feature on that. maybe you didn t need it. you guys are doing great. there are additional organizations, tuesday s children and boys of september 11th are two organizations that often bring children together and hold events for children to have an opportunity to see each other. we re out in vegas, so we don t have the opportunity. happy birthday to you and we hope that justin bieber is watching. do you want to say anything to him?
