foundation and john d. & catherine t. macarthur foundation. union bank has put its foundation strength to work for a wide range of companies, what can we do for you. and now "bbc world news" >> reports of the u.s. federal government had reports of nigerian terrorist in america and that the intelligence allowed umar abdulmutallab to board a plane. >> all already we know there were intelligent reports to allow for him to board. >> hello, welcome to "bbc world news," and on this program it's ruled illegal secret stocks. and it's known that the iranian ruler was being bribed by the iranian government. we begin with breaking news on the failed plane bombing in the united states, abc news is reporting that weeks before the christmas day attack the federal government had intelligence about a nigh gerrian being prepared for the boarding and mr. obama said this is unacceptable and that his government had information but failed to share it. >> the story of the young nigerian gets disturbing by the day and he had a visa and flew to detroit. >> when our government has information on a known extremist and that information is not acted upon, a systemic failure has occurred. and i consider that totally unacceptable. >> congress has still not acted on all the advice of the commission of 9/11 strategies, and still the airports have no reliable equipment to screen. >> our government is still not given the urgency of the task that n;4ojit requires, i still business as usual attide. >> but finding a balance is not there and the machine that is still controversial is overly exclusive but may have detected the bomb in umar's underwear. >> nigeria has denied there is an al qaeda presence, nigerian authorities are still investigating the matter. our reporter has been speaking to nigeria. >> we do not want to be identified with terrorism, that's why we are sad and unhappy, that is one act by one person out of these million people is capable of punishing us internationally. and making people feel that nigerians have joined terrorist groups. and this is something that is strange in our culture, and that is evidenced by the fact that the father of this boy was able to report him to security agencies. saying, hey, i don't know what is going on with my son, and he didn't know that his son had joined a group. but knew he was acting funny. and they reported him to yemen, they never supported him. >> speaking to our reporter and we will talk to him in a short while. moving on to today's news, police in iraq say that 22 people have been killed. the attacks took place in ramadi, west of baghdad, governor mohammed is one of dozens injured. the bombs went off in an area where several government buildings are located. >> yes, the area of ramadi, is called the green zone where government buildings are located. and the first bomb went off close to the provision ial-- provincial building and then another bomb went off. we know that 23 are known to have died and 57 injured. among those who died are several senior police officers and other police were among the other fatalities. and this is the later of series of attacks in ramadi with the approach of elections in march. and on a slightly smaller scale but in the same style of double suicide bombings in august and september causing higher casualties. political teions are extremely high. >> i want to take you now straight to the capital, tehran and thousands of people have gathered in the center of tehran. these are in support of the government, and they follow the protests where eight people were killed. and we hear that 300 people were arrested. and we see thousands of government supporters are in a rally. they are in a strength of a regime that is rationed by the protests.szrd1l and pro-government rallies in the middle of tehran. and return to the top story, the news we are getting from abc, that weeks before a christmas day airline attack, the u.s. government had report of intelligence of a terrorist assault. and we talk to mark, do we know more about what this intelligence was? >> we know from our sister organization, abc is reporting, that weeks before there was this information that the u.s. government had about a nigerian and yemen that were preparing for an attack. and this fits with the information we gather here in nigeria that the father of the alleged christmas day bomber did visit the embassy here and shared information with them. and we understand that the family of alleged bomber was contacted on two or three occasions by u.s. authorities, probably the f.b.i. or c.i.a., we are not sure. the information coming from the states is confirming this information from nigeria. >> we heard earlier, what was said about the ongoing investigation in nigeria? >> she said it was ongoing and that the vice president was talking to the leaders of the various security agencies. and it's known that the father of this bomber visited an agency for external security. and however, the agency responsible for internal security, the department of the state security told me they were not informed about this information that the father gave to the other department. it seems there is a problem in nigeria as putting to the united states, of not sharing information. and the minister told that security would be increased at the various airports in nigeria. and i got reports from the security capital that security is increased there. and cars are searched in a way they weren't before. and motorcycles that were allowed to certain areas are not now, so there is increasing security. >> the pakistan taliban has claimed responsibility for an attack on monday, the attack has threatened similar attacks in the coming day. the boy who had 30 sewing needles is out of surgery, the father has confessed of putting the needles into the boy for a ritual. there were 4,000 hmong's from thailand because of backing u.s. forces in the war. severe flooding is affecting large parts of spain, areas are put on alert. there was a reseoir that lead to a shortage of drinking water. forecasters are warning of more bad weather to come. and we go to juliet and more from the president. >> they said no to the carbon tax, the plan was that this tax would kick in on friday. but now have to start over. they say that the courts were not going to legalize it because it's unfair and puts a burden of cutting wasteful gases with harmful gases, and puts it on the shoulderce -- shoulders of the consumers. thousands of france producers dodged this tax. and it didn't apply to 93% emissions and begs the question what was the purpose. but they have to go back to square 1 and we should see a new version next month. >> stay with us here on "bbc world news." the job that was dubbed the best in the world had a sting in the tail. a judge in argentina has ordered for a powerful dna -- blood samples were ordered by a media group. >> there the adopted children of one of the most powerful mogules stolen from their parents in the 80's and now required to give a dna sample in an attempt to solve the mystery. the campaigning group of the victims in that era said that the answer could be found by other means a long time ago. >> the military sources have always had concise records, so they should have that information but don't want release it. that's why when two families came forward with results, they were not given to the parents. >> here in a school in buenes aires, they have identified as many as 100 children. they want more results from two other families, the tests will shed light on their identity, taking up to 45 days for the results. >> we have more on the military rulers and they will condemn their country if they don't allow free elections. the main headline here on "bbc world news." there are reports that weeks before the attempted christmas day attack on the u.s. feintell about a nigerian and yemen being prepared for a terrorist assault. umar abdulmutallab, a student in london, and we have our reporter joining us. john, what do you make of this news if the information had been shared between these various agencies there would have been clear warning flags put up. >> yes, i think you need to look at the experation in president obama's voice when he appeared before the press in hawaii and expressed that the intelligence of umar may be getting on an airplane and not caused a stop in amsterdam. and it's possible that there was other intelligence indicating that a nigerian was in preparation for a bombing in the yemen #@qof=that was not processed in the intelligence network. so it's not surprising he would be upset about that. and we have to remember what kind of country yemen has been, it's always been a crucible al-qaeda area. and an attack took place in october 2000, and it was a warning and a rehearsal of what was coming on september 11, 2001. so no surprise that someone in the final stages would prepare for an attack would learn in yemen for this attack. >> president obama has not defended the system but sided with critics. >> i think he will be aware of the criticism on the bush administration on september 11 him and president clinton and his administration. president obama i think it's fair to say that he's attempted to follow a policy of leveling with the american people. and this is a serious matter for any president of any government if lapses of this kind had taken place since efforts in 9/11 and 7/07, in the u.k. for security to intercept these people. >> do you feel this whole system needs to be overhauled, it looks like the watch-list system. >> i think it's a glass half empty, glass half full. tremendous progress has been made, as far as i know that major hassan's attack in fort hood may or may not. the scope if the will of terrorist threat may be greater here in the u.k. for reasons we are aware of. but both governments acknowledge of what more needs to be done. jonathan evans said that the resources that mi-5 had that has been increased over the years, even now are sufficient to deal with the crocodiles nearest the boat. and that links to whether mr. abdulmutallab was found near london, was not a crocodile near the boat. >> the overthrowing of officials shah's presence in britain where he owned a house would put areas in risk. margaret thatcher was in a difficult position because of her close relationship to the shah. >> when he first came in i think she thought about refuge to the shah and that the risks would be too great. and with some reluctancmade it wise of a public application to come and he didn't. >> this is when we see this remarkable cloak and dagger. >> yes, they went to efforts, there was a man named anthony perkins that came back from iran and he was a predesor and of that meeting and made contact with the shah, and s effort to dissuade the shah from efforts to come here. >> happy days are here for english crickets. >> exactly, they wrapped up the win in just over an hour. it's a great day for england crickets taking a win over south africa. england got the four remaining wickets they needed. and south africa was scheduled to 133 with england winning for the first time in 45 years. >> the next test has us in a good position for the series. the way we won today gives us confidence to go into cape town. africa is a proud team and has good players. >> graham, you are in a situation where you can take a wicket to every ball. >> i am glad that it seems like that to you, my fingers have hole but it's going good and i expected to do the donkey work. and it's nice to pick up a few wickets along the way. and two matches in two games, i will take that honest and finish nicely. >> ricky is the most successful match captain in history. he had 170 runs in london with pakistan out 251 on the final day. in football, gary mason has been sacked. looking to cruise to a victory, an nixon wins with four wins this season. with liverpool in there with the reds in seventh league place. the pittsburgh penguins winning in new york, with a score in the second period with this long effort. but with a rally and with a score with a back-hand shot and jason netted a power-play goal to hold on to this stunning victory. yes, a cracking win there. >> it was billed the best job in the world, but proves to be a nightmare. just days away of completing his position as caretaker off of a reef when attacked by a jellyfish. >> not bad for an office, hamilton island has been ben's place of work for the last six months. the 34-year-old beat over 30,000 applicants for island caretaker, youtube to victory. he received his paycheck and had a blog for queen's industry. >> i look forward to the new roles that the task involves. >> but that task proved risky than he expected. only days before leaving the island he was stung by a jellyfish that was deadly. before his blog he wrote about a bee-like sting in his arm that lead to increase of high blood pressure, and he received treatment on the island and recovered. he plans to travel the world, he may not boast the best job in the world but with that time running out. >> one lucky man, and you can watch more on "bbc world news," at bbc.com/news. this is the capital of tehran and this is a pro-government demonstration. iran has accused western powers of stirring violence in the process. >> funding was made possible by the freeman foundation of new york, stowe, vermont, and honolulu. the newman's own foundation, john d. & catherine t. macarthur foundation and union bank. >> union bank has put its financial strength to work for a wide range of companies, from small businesses to major corporations, what can we do for intelligence conversation. for election coverage you can count on. >> i am kerry waington and public broadcasting is my source for intelligent connections to my community. >> "bbc world news" was
