next big storm is on the horizon. t big storm hi everybody. i'm mary bubala. the snow is what everyone is talking about. >> we're still reeling after two feet of snow two days after residents and side streets haven't been touched, it's slow going for those on the roadways. because of that, several systems have closed the school for tomorrow. that information will be running at the bottom of the screen. keep a lookout for that. looking live outside, most of the areas still covered in white and the piles have no place to go. >> wjz has a team of reporters following the major snow event. the complete coverage with the latest on the state-wide cleanup efforts. the shape our side streets are in. first, the first warning weather team tracking the storm heading this way. bernadette woods and we start with bob. it doesn't seem possible that another major snowstorm is heading here, but it is. around here, it's quiet. it was a beautiful sunny day today and yesterday. a lot of precipitation developing out to the west. this one causing rain, this one causing snow across the upper midwest, they're both moving east and will combine one coastal storm off of the mid atlantic region and we're going to be in for moderate to heavy snow sometime tomorrow afternoon not ending until wednesday night. some new warnings. >> it's just been upgraded to a winter storm warning. that's in effect for tomorrow afternoon and continues through wednesday afternoon. now a winter storm watch, this is inclued in the winter storm warning and that's what we're concerned. want to show you the map. we put it together and we think widespread area getting close to a foot. we get down to the south, going to be mixing with sleet. down to the south, a longer period with rain so the amounts will be less than the last storm. snow is going to take over at the end. you see we're still many the zone of the bull's eye of heavy snow from the storm once again. we will have more coming up. thank you. when the new snow arrives, many of you will be cleaning up. state transportation giving a warning of freezing and they will bring front-end loaders and try to get the ice on the roads and using magnesium chloride. here's a closer look of what we learned. >> reporter: maryland is buried in snow from the city to every county, aiming to get people moving again and preparing for another big snowfall tomorrow. >> looks like it's leaning to the 12. we're preparing and trying to keep the national guard resources in place. >> hoping to see more plowed roads. i guess there's a lot of work first. >> many are snow covered and will be for days to come. this tractor trailer got stuck in the city. police dealing with hundreds of abandoned cars, is this a sky view south of baltimore. leaders are urging patients. >> traffic packs down the snow on the roadway and the cold temperatures has resulted in that snow turning into ice. and that ice adhering to the roadway. >> hundreds do not have power as crews work to deal with trees that fell in the wet, heavy snow. >> we have had some difficult patches and we need for people to continue being slow and careful in their driving and being courteous and cautious as well. >> reporter: at the city command center, workers were tire but committed for the next snowstorm and what is poised to be a record-breaking winter for snow. many are taking breaks and working in shifts trying to get it done. definitely committed and it's a team effort. the governor calling around and getting some work done and coordinating with officials as they get ready for a second winter blast. the record-breaking was the term used here today by state leaders when they gave the update. reporting live, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you. complete coverage continues with derek and the big dig as residents struggle to clear the piles ahead of the next snowfall. it's overwhelming to hear of more snow. >> it is for everyone out there. those piles of snow, likely they're just going to get bigger as more and more people can't wait any longer for the plows to come to the streets and they start digs themselves out. turn down just about any street and they see them, people armed with shovels digging out. >> it's pretty heavy snow. >> reporter: the record- breaking snowfall left the entire region house bound. >> people don't want to be snowed in. they get cabin fever. >> people walking around saying hi and neighbors meeting each other, it's more like a community. >> now it's time for many to get down to business and trying to free up the cars so they can return to work. an overwhelming store that plows haven't made it to every street. in the windsor mill area, entire neighborhoods are banning together to dig out. >> you've been waiting and decided not to wait longer. >> got to get moving. rejoin society. >> it's the time of year when everyone gets together and works together. >> reporter: in parts of howard county, reports of 38". >> some areas have been hit hard. >> looks like we got the most snow in if region. the county emergency operation center has been fully staffed since the storm first started and they're tracking which streets need attention and answering calls while asking for patience. >> reporter: patience should be the keyword of the day. on the side streets that haven't been plow yet, it's easy to get stuck. we had a problem and we want to thank mike for helping us. it's something we saw all day long. other cars getting stuck on the streets not clear yet, so that's causing some traffic problems as people try to maneuver around. you have to have patience out there. if you can, stay home because what few lanes are open out there on the roads, are pretty jammed up with people trying to get out because they've been home bound for the last few days, it's tricky going and everyone should be careful especially on the side streets. >> thank you. we'll heed that. most of us have felt how overwhelming it is to shovel the snow. it can be dangerous and in some cases it can be fatal. a custodian at a high school collapsed and died while clearing the school parking lot today. they're not sure what caused the man's death. information is still coming into the news room and we'll keep you updateed. many found out there's still major problems on the roadways and one lane or no lanes completely clear. sharon gibala is in traffic control. >> reporter: side streets are still messy in many areas. the main roads are looking good but that doesn't mean we're not having problems. there's still slick spots and there's snow removal blocking. all must exit on 295. an accident on 83 at falls road, that's blocking all lanes with a backup. another one on 50 westbound at st. claire road. one at north, north point and a defective traffic light. out of the snow and believe it or not, not making this up, there's another major snowstorm on the way. first of all today, want to show you started out cold. we have gotten up to just about freezing today and with the sunshine out there has been a lot of melting, not nearly enough, but a lot of melting. heading into tonight, all of the temperatures are going to drop below freezing and everything that became a slush today and didn't melt away is going to be ice overnight. that's the first issue, the next is the storm moving our way. two parts to the west and it's a decent storm across the country. it's moving our way. the clouds come in and the storm breaking out tomorrow afternoon and continuing through wednesday afternoon. the snow will be a part of it, the winds will be a second part like the last storm. this shows how it comes together. one piece here and one here and as they move towards the atlantic, they combine into one, that's significant from the meteorologist standpoint because it means that all of the extra energy is going to be transferred into winds and throwing it back into the cold air. it's still strengthening and gives us bigger totals and that's what we expect. showing you on a larger scale, the brunt of the storm shifts to the north and you notice it still includes us. we're talking about heavy snow, winds up to 40-50 miles per hour and 50 towards the coast and 30-40 in the zones along the bay and that's going to cause some lower visibilities, blowing of snow and in our case, this is just going to be on top of it. we want to show you the snowfall map. this is what we're expecting, this area, 12-18-inches. in area 6-12-inches and sleet mixing. now down to the south, going to see much more in the way of mixing, but at the end of the storm, the cold air coming in and changing to snow. as far as the forecast, this is what we're seeing on the bay. small craft advisory in effect. the winds turn to the east. still a quiet one tonight but a cold one. everything is going to freeze up. talking about 12 degrees for the low. tomorrow recovering to 32, the clouds come in and the snow arrives in the afternoon and becoming heavier at night and the winds pick up and we have the storm coming in tomorrow and it's going to continue until wednesday and hard to believe, everyone around here is like you're kidding. we're not, just trying another significant snowfall expected to arrive tomorrow. plows reached primary roads using 2000 pieces of equipment but many people on side streets say their neighborhoods remain untouched and leaving them trapped for a third day in a row and now it's a race before the next storm. the next storm system moves towards maryland. we begin with jessica kartalija checking on the persisting travel problems across the state. >> good afternoon. we have been out and about today and believe it or not, this street looks significantly better than some of the other streets we've seen. people stuck, they cannot move their cars as hard as they are trying and relying on public transportation and that is very slow going today. headed northbound, you're in luck. train service on track from d.c. to boston, but for trains headed south, service is canceled. >> crowded and angry that they haven't gotten out of town yet. >> a welcomed sight for flyers flyers. >> reporter: here at the airport, crews shovel snow into a giant mountain behind me meanwhile officials want us to make it clear, if you're coming out to catch a flight, you need to call ahead and make sure your flight is running as scheduled. >> facilities are open with the potential for winter weather in coming days and encouraging to rebook. >> the airlines brought in a number of flight, this morning, things are moving well. >> so far, no delays, we were going out on saturday for our honeymoon. now we're leaving today. >> reporter: bus service around baltimore is running at 40%. for those ladies, trying to get to a doctor's appointment, they try to take the subway. >> i know it's going to be some kind of delay. >> we're going metro. going to have travel to johns hopkins and plan to sustain that that. we hope to get to the airport. >> reporter: of course if you're going to head out to take any flights, we want to remind you, you need to call ahead or check online to make sure the flights are going as to the west, here it is already got a lot of moisture, a good amount of snow and it's moving east. two areas of low pressure are going to once again combine off the east coast, become another coastal storm for much of the atlantic atlantic region. the bullet of the snow is to the north and the northeast. taking a look at the watches and warnings that go into effect tomorrow. we're updating this, everybody across maryland, delaware, west virginia and northern virginia under a winter storm warning extending through the day on wednesday. from about baltimore north of dover, 12-18". prepare yourself as best you can for the next big blast coming tomorrow and most of the day on wednesday. we'll have win to deal with too. >> okay. thank you. the storm pounded the nation's capital leaving 30" behind. washington is dealing with it like baltimore. the city to the south also bracing for winter weather. >> washington d.c. is digging out for a record-breaking snowfall and getting ready for more. another winter storm approaching and there's 18-30- inches of snow on the ground. the nation's capital was shut down for the third day in a row. the federal government closed, the metro system only stopped at underground stations and ten bus lines were running. the senate open for business monday to postpone everything on the docket. >> it was dead, you could hear your voice echo. >> the snowplows passed through the major streets in d.c., but this is what they're leaving behind, the massive piles of snow. for this couple, a walk across town turned into a talk about the future. >> she wants to move to minnesota in the distant future and i don't want to move to minnesota. >> reporter: thousands without power and the weight of the snow causing roofs to collapse. that's what happen here at a fire station. no one hurt but first responders had to move their operation center into a bingo hall. some predict the next blast of weather could deliver 10" of snow. in washington, joel brown, wjz eyewitness news. while bg and e restored power. we have what appears to be the look at the weather and the situations out there. let's go to captain mike. >> reporter: we are indeed in baltimore county near the back river bridge. we want to show you the contrast between some of the county side streets and some of the main thoroughfares. just east of the back river bridge, what you're seeing now, that is actually eastern boulevard. when i came down, it was only one lane, now it's close to 2. they have been working on it all day and you know that the sun has melted some of the snow away. still, a very large amount of snow remains along the edge of the roadway and in the gutters. they're having some drainage issues in low areas along eastern boulevard and getting pooling water in some places. that's a problem and it will continue as long as we get the thaw refreeze issue going on. we do see most of the folks have dug out, but the roads still in a dismal condition.
