gray, news 4. here in washington the dupont circle escalator problems continued throughout the day today. there was a major breakdown in service when smoke was noticed at the station. many metro riders had to climb 120 stairs to get out of the station. chris gordon is live at dupont metro center. >> reporter: good evening, doreen. metro said the problem began at an escalator air conditioning unit. repair crews are working on motors and brakes and handrails. half the escalators are working. the rest are stationary, being used as walkers. that is another way of saying stairs. today that presented a challenge to many metro riders. as the south entrance to the dupont circle metro station metro had one escalator working, going down, leaving passengers to struggle up 140 steps. >> i want to know why they have the one going down not the one going up. >> reporter: how hard is it? >> it is out of breath. i can't breathe. >> i'm 72 and have a bad knee. it is bad. >> reporter: smoke was reported coming from the escalators located at the north entrance of the dupont circle station. d.c. firefighters responded and some of them found it tough climbing the escalator stairs. websites that monitor metro posted video from passengers showing the crowds underground waiting to walk up the stairs. anger rising. >> they messed the whole thing up! it is all broken! >> reporter: metro crews worked throughout the day trying to fix the escalators. at the north entrance they got one working. at the south entrance they restarted the up escalator a number of times only to have it stop time and again challenging the patience and stamina of passengers. >> how many breakdowns is metro going to have. >> reporter: you are obviously out of breath. >> i am. >> reporter: what is your frustration level. >> it is about at a ten. so i'm going to have to find an alternative method of transportation. >> metro says it hopes to have most of the escalators working by the end of the week here at dupont circle. escalators will not be fully functions here possibly until the end of july. >> what measz. very frustrating. thank you chris gordon. marc train panelers stranded in a hot train for hours last month, now they are eligible for special benefits from the maryland transit administration. they receive five free vip passages for a marc train. on june 21st a train broke down leaving passengers stranded without air conditioning. two people were taken to the hospital and treated for heat exhaustion. a catholic priest has been arrested in fairfax county accused of sexually abusing a child. he is from wheeling, west virginia. 44-year-old felix owino was taken into custody last wednesday. he has been suspended. he was on summer break from his teaching duties when the alleged incident happened. he has a court hearing september 2. d.c. police are trying to figure out what happened to a double shooting at 7th and o streets northwest. two men were shot. both are expected to survive. police have not released any information. d.c. police believe they may have solved five murders with the arrest of one man. ron brosbon jr. was arrested on friday. he was involved in at least five deadly shootings dating back to 1994. >>. >> the d.c. council is considering legislation to make it easier to access the records of violent juvenile offenders. there would still be strict controls on which government agencies could ak ses the records. phil mendellson proposed the bill. >> the intent of the bill is to pierce the veil of secrecy that surrounds the juvenile justice system. no longer would the public get the answer i cannot answer about a kid repeatedly convicted of a crime. >> there will be another vote on the measure in the fall. union leaders are asking mayor fenty to immediately restate four social workers. they were fired in 2008 in the wake of the benita jacks case convicted of killing her four daughters and keeping their remains. yesterday the social workers union upheld the reinstatement of the fired workers. the mayor's office has not decided whether to give the workers their jobs back. new york yankees owner george steinbrenner died of a heart attack this morning in tampa, florida. he was 80 years old. lindsay czarniak has more about his legacy. >> a sad day for the yankees franchise. george steinbrenner is known as the boss. he bought a struggling yankee franchise for $10 million and turned it into a championship organization. he was known for his attention to detail. george steinbrenner led the yankees to seven world series championships, 11 american league pennants, 16 al east titles. he was a visionary from the trades to the upkeep of facilities. he was fiery in the name of winning. he was famous for firing managers in the '70s and '80s and maintained good relations. he leaves to his sons hank and hall the most profitable team in all of major league baseball perhaps the most successful franchise in all of sports. derek jeter will miss his boss. >> he really expected to win, every night, every day. i remember my first, second year, i was on third base and got doubled off on a line drive in the infield. we won death toll in the deadly attacks in uganda in the world cup final has reached 76. among the injured 16-year-old emily kerstetter from maryland. she was scheduled for surgery in a south african hospital. she and her grandmother were in south africa with their church group. suspected somali terror group could be capable of carrying out attacks outside of africa. for the second time in eight months an afghan soldier turned against british troops. it happened this morning. an afghan soldier fired a rocket propelled grenade killing three and wounding four more. jim maceda has our report. >> reporter: what they are calling a rogue afghan soldier fired a rocket propelled grenade at a group of british soldiers he was on joint patrol with very early this morning killing three british soldiers, wounding at least four before fleeing into the dark. he is still at large. his motive for the attack remanes unknown. what is clear is that this is a major breach of security and it makes it all that more difficult to maintain the trust and confidence between british and u.s. forces on the one hand and the afghan soldiers and police they are mentoring on the other. >> sometimes one tends to say these things happen in war. i think when your partner, the person you are fighting with turns on you, it has a real effect on you. we shouldn't try and understate that. >> reporter: it is probably why very quickly the new nato commander, general petraeus released a statement saying in part and i quote "we must ensure that the trust between our forces remain solid in order to defeat our taking it on a joyride says he sorry. 19-year-old william jackson is accused of taking the bus and crashing it into a tree. >> jackson stole the bus right off the lot. tonight he is speaking only to news 4's pat collins. his goes to the duke ellington school of performing arts. >> he is a great singer. he has a great voice and a good heart. >> reporter: for more than two years he's worked a part-time job at the eastern market for linda brown. how would you describe him? >> gentle, very caring. considerate. >> reporter: he has at least one relative who is a metro bus driver and he says when he turns 21 he wants to be a bus driver, too. >> it is a family tradition to be a bus driver. >> reporter: today i ran into 19-year-old william jackson, the young man accused of actually putting on a metro bus driver's outfit, going to the bus yard, taking a bus, driving it on to the street, picking up passengers, letting off passengers, collecting fares, driving a bus route until he hit that tree on 17th street southeast. william jacks lives on raleigh street southeast. he didn't want his face shown but he had this to say about the incident. >> i am truly sorry for what i have allegedly been accused of. i personally would like to extend my deepest apologies to the good name of the duke ellington school of the arts and to my family and friends who i love very much. this incident has brought me closer to my family and to god. >> reporter: linda brown not only employees jackson at the eastern market. she serves as his godmother, too. what do you make of this, ma'am? >> i'm shocked. >> reporter: have you spoke to him since? >> yes. >> reporter: and what did he say? >> he said he was bored and frustrated. >> reporter: did he tell you why he did it. >> that was his reason. he said he had been depressed. >> reporter: william jackson, this month he is going to summer school. he is trying to get his high school diploma. next month he is going to court. his future as a bus driver, well, that could be put on hold. i'm pat collins, news 4, washington. >> jackson is charged with one count of unauthorized use of a vehicle. a metro driver is being accused of sexual aassaulting a special needs personal after being picked up from an adult day care. the suspect is not a metro employee but a contractor provided by regency cab. police plan to charge the driver with second degree rape and sexual ofoens. two men were indicted for stealing copper wire from amtrak. they took wire used to prevent electric strikes. court documents say the men sold the wire to local scrap yards netting $20,000. if they are convicted they could face up to 15 years in jail. a young man from herndon is one of two george mason students for stealing a campus police officer's i.d. information. court documents show the students planned to burglarize the campus buildings. >> reporter: george mason university police began their information in early may when someone had gotten their hands on an officer's identification card access information unlike student cards that can only open the front doors of dorms, the police i.d. opens far more doors and they were using the information to get into unauthorized areas. the stolen police access information was being used to get inside the housing office here. they discovered about the same time a particular student was swiping his pass card to get inside, they went to his dorm room on the fifth noor and confronted him. an affidavit showed the student denying knowing anything. then the officer spotted a safe and asked what was inside. the affidavit said the suspect willingly opened the safe and in plain view was a box of access cards. the student suspect allowed the officer to examine his laptop, desktop computer, thumb drive and media card. police discovered child porn videos and a spread sheet with george mason student names and information and an on line chat between students revealed a plot to climb through ceilings to burglarize campus buildings. the investigation provided one more surprise. the students both in the rotc program. students are shocked by the bold plan and suspect's ability to gain access to police i.d. information. >> it is a scary thought to think someone could have access to the entire campus including the living quarters of the students and access to all the computers and what not. >> that is very shocking. that is very surprising. i didn't think it would be possible, really. >> police sought a search warrant to seize items from the second student's herndon home. when we stopped by his
