that several families were displaced. 19 people in all were evacuated from a three-story building on quaul street northeast. a church in northwest on wfrmts street had some bricks knocked loose in damage to its roof as well. there were treeses that took down power lines and blocked streets. metro was delayed on the red line after a utility poll came down on some above-ground tracks. at the worst, some 44,000 pepco customers lost power, most in montgomery county and half of those had been restored by late evening here in northern virginia. 26,000 dominion power customers also lost service and the crews worked there overnight as they did in our utilities in the area it try to restore power to those that lost it because of the high winds yesterday. again, as we are telling you here at the dmv, they are open for business. luckily, that tin roof was sort of the cover of the rest of the structure there. that luckily wasn't damaged. crews are up there now. they are putting the materials back down and taking buzzsaws or chainsaws to the tin roof to try to cut it up and haul it out of the way. we are live in northern virginia. back to you. just amazing pictures. thank you, of days of break today and tomorrow without too much of a breeze to worry about. monday, another possibility for high winds across the area. get everything nailed back down and checked out for today. cleaned up, because we may be cla cleaning up by monday afternoon. >> these are not rain-making clouds so we don't have any rain in the fraorecast for today or tomorrow. a risk of a few lonely raindrops late in the day for tomorrow. for today, some cloudy skies to get us started. temperatures are slowly climbing into the upper 30s to near 40 degrees. there is a look at radar. a couple of lonely raindrops are snowflakes across far southern pennsylvania. these are not expected to make it down into the area. temperatures which are hovering near 40 now will be in the mid-40s by noontime and highs today up close to 50 degrees. tomorrow, clouds again but milder. tomorrow, up near 60. we will talk more about monday's problems coming a couple of minutes. >> can't take too much all at one. >> we have to focus on the weekend first. today, at 2:00 p.m., a solidarity rally will be held for the people at bahrain and libya in front of the white house as the obama administration sanctioned moammar gadhafi by freezing his and his children's financial assets. there are no reports that some libyan soldiers have switched sides and are now marching alongside protesters. this video was shot yesterday in tripoli. it shows protesters. moammar gadhafi's son repeated his father's accusations that al qaeda was part of the revolt by giving drugs to young libyan protesters. >> to send fact-finding mission to libya. we are not afraid of facts. we are worried about rumors and lies. because facts are on our side. >> gadhafi's son insists as he has for more than a week that the number of deaths reported are, quote, greatly exaggerated. right now, international groups and diplomates are putting the death toll at somewhere between 600 and 2000. hundreds of area teachers and union workers are planning to rally today in dupont circle. they are gathering in support of public workers in wisconsin who have been fighting to keep collective bargaining rights for two weeks. >> democrats in state assemblies shouted at republicans in anger after they passed governor scott walker's budget early yesterday and the bill goes to the state senate. the democratic senators are still absent after fleeing the state to avoid a vote. walker says, doing away with collective bargaining will save the state millions of dollars. this won't be a weekend off for virginia's general assembly. lawmakers are trying to resolve differences in their versions of the budget. the biggest sticking point, the surplus. senate democrats want much of that money to go to education. house republicans want more for transportation. they expect this 2011 session to end tomorrow. this past week has not been kind to d.c. major, vincent gray, starting with the surprise firing of suleiman brown who was hired as a consultant. stalking complaints became public, accused of stalking a 13-year-old in 2007. then, there was the controversy surrounding kwame brown's cars, discovered the chairman was costing the city $4,000 a month for two suv payments. they have some of gray's close advisers wondering if he has lost control of his administration. he is trying to look ahead to more pressing issues concerning the district. >> i am going to continue to be focused on the important stuff that we are doing. clearly, a lot of work that we are doing now is focusing on the fiscal year 2012 and the horrific deficit we have and trying to figure out how we are going to handle it. we are going to continue to do that. >> these come at a tough time for gray. his budget proposal is coming soon and expected to include millions of dollars of cuts to the city's budget. >> jack evans says he has a solution on how to stop the city from leasing expensive vehicles. he will propose legislation next week that would require the mayor to, quote, personally sign off on every leased vehicle. they would also have to send a cope of that lease to the d.c. council. tax day is only a few weeks away i am sorry to remind you. today, d.c. residents can get taxes filed for free. d.c. congresswoman, eleanor holmes norton is holding her annual tax and information fair at the washington convention center from 10:00 to 1:00. more than 120 tax professionals from the irs and the d.c. office of tax and revenue will be on hand to help you file your taxes. financial services will be offered to those seeking house and mortgage counseling as well as credit counseling and testing for hiv and aids. maryland could soon be the sixth to legalize same-sex marriage. they voted in favor of the ish why you on thursday. lawmakers told "the washington post" the full house and delegates could take up the issue by next week. governor martin o'malley said he would sign the bill if it got to his desk. this morning, the region is remembering a man who helped pioneer gay marriage in the district. he passed away at the age of 90. wendy rieger shares his story. >> reporter: you guys have sustained it all and have grown in your love and commitment to each other through all the good times and bad times. >> reporter: it was a warm june day when bob davis and henry slitski made it to the summit on top of a wedding cake on top of the willard on top of the world. they did something they never thought possible. they got married after spending more than 62 years as a devoted couple. bob was 90. henry, 89. they first met in world war ii and became inseparable partners for life. they were worried about their rights. without being able to marry, they didn't have any as a couple. they got creative, in the '90s, henry adopted bob. >> i said, you mean if you can't marry them or sire them, you adopt them? >> full access to safe deposits, accounts, ownership of the apartment. >> reporter: it was with great joy last year that they terminated that adoption and announced plans to be married just weeks after gay marriage became legal in d.c. >> by the authority vested in me by the district of columbia, i car rear-ended when the station stopped their classical music format in 2007. former president, george w. bush is canceling a public appearance to speak at a new zealand's prime minister says the devastation caused by an earthquake may be the sirngle most tragic event. the city of christchurch experienced numerous aftershocks today. luckily, no one was hurt. the prime minister says the christchurch business district won't be useable for months. an estimated 50,000 people will be out of work because of that. 600 rescuers are hoping to find more than 200 people still missing. expectations are becoming more bleak by the second. police are saying some sort of driver error caused a bus to careen off a mountain and killed 27 people. the crash happened yesterday. the bus was headed to lena abimt three hours away. investigators are trying to figure out how the driver lost control. the trial of a cia contractor caused about killing two pakistani men has caused a swelling of anti-american sentiment in the country. protesters demanded the contractor, raymond davis, be brought to davis, with some suggesting he be executed. he shot and killed two men last month. he says, he acted in self-defense after they tried to rob him. american officials insist that he has diplomatic immunity and should be cleared of the charges and repatriated. former president, george w. bush is canceling a public appearance thanks to wicky leagues founder, julius assange. he was scheduled to speak at a conference in denver. he learned that organizers had invited founders of the website. of assange, bush says he has willfully and repeatedly done great harm to the interests of the united states. he is under house arrest in britain and is not expected to attend the conference. in the days ahead, governors from across the country will descend on the nation's capital for the national governor's association winter meetings. to kick off those meetings, they will discuss one of the hottest topics across the country right now, job creation. they will attend a black tie event with the president tomorrow and return to the white house monday to discuss the state's role in the federal agenda. meanwhile, congress is one step closer to avoiding a disastrous government shutdown. according to the washington post, senate democrats have agreed to a republican proposal to cut $4 billion in programs already marked for elimination by the president. they are part of a gop proposal that would keep the government running until march 18th, two weeks past the original deadline. it is expected to be voted on in both houses next week and have a live report on this issue coming up. one man is making his strtot the white house, named jeremy bernard. he will be the first openly gay person to fill that role. he is finishing up his role as a senior adviser to the u.s. ambassador to france. he will now be responsible for planning social events, including state dinners and the annual easter egg roll and receptions. eviction notices could be on their way up to capitol hill. a washington watchdog group is shedding light on members of congress that sleep in their offices saying bunking on the hill is cheating taxpayers. when nightfalls on capitol hill, the halls go empty and some congress members will burn the midnight oil. >> i want to be prepared myself. >> reporter: hanson clark is a freshman representative from detroit, among 30 to 50 male congress members who bunk for the night in their offices showed nbc's kelly o'donnell. >> we have to move this table back, move this chair over to that door after i lock it and then i will bring my mattress out and put it right here. >> an empty office and quick change means total emersion in work says clark and it also means breaking the rules says a washington ethics watchdog. >> it turns the house office buildings into frats or dorm rooms and that is obviously unseemly. >> citizens for responsibility and ethics in washington filed a claim saying the politicians are getting an unfair tax break. >> if this is lodging, members of congress have to be paying taxes on the fair market value of that lodging and right now, they are not doing that. >> i came to congress to work for people in metro detroit not to live in d.c. this is not a home, but a place to work for people. >> clark acknowledges sleeping at work saves him money. he says he will comply with the rules or pay a fee. members are paid $174,000 a year. some argue it is too costly to have a house at home and in d.c. >> something as complicated as these free trade agreements, they could have a lot of loopholes in there that could result in people in my district losing jobs, even though the lobbyists are telling me the opposite. i have to read those things firsthand so i know what's in there myself. >> reporter: sleeping on the hill, clark argues, means getting everything done for the taxpayers he serves. >> congressman clark says he will get four, five hours of sleep a night on what he says is a moderately comfortable mattress. he can get up early in the morning and get dressed and be to work by 6:00, 6:30 in the morning. >> he is only in town a couple of days a week and goes back to his district and works in detroit. >> flying back and forth. tough job if you can win it, if you want to win it. 9:19. let's check in 69-mile-per-hour wind gust. 40 degrees out there. plenty of clouds. temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s for now. gradually aiming for upper 40s to near 50. no rain or snow to worry about around the washington area. cloudy but dry for today. plenty of clouds around for tomorrow as well. tomorrow may not be 100% dry. here is the reason why. warm air, which we had yesterday, has been pushed back down to the south. over the next 24 hours is the high pressure, which has brought us the cooler weather for today as the area of high pressure drifts off the eastern seaboard and that trend of warm air tries to come back in by the end of the day. by 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 tomorrow evening. we may be under the gun for strong to severe thunderstorms. we have to keep you posted on that. today, more clouds and sunshine. on the cool side, highs today, upper 40s. tomorrow, cloudy, milder as the warm air tries to come back into place. highs tomorrow, upper 50s to near 60. monday, near 70 out ahead of the rain showers and thunderstorms. some of those could be severe. we will have to watch that carefully. rain through monday night ending early tuesday morning and tranquil weather returns for the to bounce back tonight on long island against the islanders. to the nba, last night, the wizards played well and hung with the heat in miami for about 40 minutes. problem is, an nba game is 48 minutes. nick young did his best to keep up with the heat. he poured in 38 including six three-pointers. dwyane wade and his heatmates were too much. dwyane wade scored 41 points as they heat beat the wiz, 121-113. back home tonight taking on the mavericks. at the nfl combine, on the field workouts begin today. for the last couple of days, potential draftees and team personnel have been meeting with the media. yesterday, redskins head coach, mike shanahan stepped to the podium and said that he had spoken with donovan mcnabb's agent and they hope to have some resolution by draft day. as for the running back situation, clinton portis could be gone. shanahan says he is leaning towards releasing portis to give him a chance to get the best offer. he is scheduled to make $8 million next looking back at the wind and all the damage from yesterday's -- do you call it a storm if it was just wind? >> they were related to storms yesterday. last weekend, the high wind was not part of any individual storm cell, just all part of the overall weather pattern. yesterday's winds were a lot more focused underneath the showers and storms. a little bit of a difference. as a result, we didn't have the high winds for as long of a stretch. when they came down, almost 70-mile-an-hour wind gust in alexandria. the fierce winds are gone. a light breeze out of the north. gradually, our winds will come back around to the south. temperatures in the upper 30s to around 40 now, probably going to climb into the upper 40s to near 50 ralater on today. primarily up across southern pennsylvania. mid and high-level clouds streaming on through the area, not expecting these clouds to do anything to interfere with your outdoor plans. temperatures today will climb into the upper 40s to near 50 degrees with all the clouds. more clouds for tomorrow but milder with temperatures back into the upper 50s to 60s. light rain tomorrow but monday promises to be another very busy weather day. in the meantime,
