and the winner is the hurt locker. good morning, little movie, big night. the hurt locker takes the oscars by storm. six awards, including best picture and best director. the first time for a woman, as two hollywood veterans, sandra bullock and jeff bridgings walk away with their first academy awards. thank you, academy members! did i really earn this, or did i just wear you all down. this morning, meredith and al are in los angeles talking with all the big winners. today exclusive karl rove, george w. bush s closest adviser opens up about his time in the white house. and for the first time tackles questions about his father s sexuality and mother s suicide. it was a chance to set the record straight about two people whom i loved a lot. this morning, karl rove like you ve never heard him before. and stealing the pot four masked bandits armed with guns and machetes storm a poker tournament and snatch the who than $1 million jackpot. now the hunt is on to find them and the money today, monday, march 8, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and good morning, welcome to a special edition of today on a monday morning. i m matt lauer in new york and when you think about hollywood and the academy awards. you think about meredith vieira and al roker. did you guys sleep at all? i got an hour of sleep. did you sleep at all? about an hour or two, yeah. but not bad. it was great, i was able to interview jeff bridges after the awards ceremony. so that was a lot of fun. i didn t have one drink at all. unlike our guests, which we ll introduce you to in a moment. there s a lot of partying after wrtds. because of good reason. avatar may have dominated the box office, but it was the hurt locker who stole the show. kathryn bigelow s win for best director makes her the first woman to receive that honor. we ll hear from her and the the hurt locker s cast. we ll join us live in just a bit and they ve promised to behave. they re in a the hurt locker of tir own right now. also by the way, guys, aig night for two of our favorite actors, sandra bullock and jeff bridges, long adored by the moviegoers, their performances finally registered with oscar voters. we ll have more on their big wins coming up as well. yeah. and of course, matt, it wouldn t be an oscar wrap-up without a trip to the red carpet. who were the big winners outside of the kodak theater, we ll get into that as well. from the powerful in hollywood to washington s biggest power brokers, our exclusive interview with karl rove, he helped george w. bush win two terms in office. to some, he s a political genius. to others, a political pariah. love him or not, you ll want to hear what rove is now saying about his time at the forefront of american politics. meredith? but we begin this morning with the big winners from the 82nd annual academy awards. well, the time has come. kathryn bigelow! director kathryn bigelow made history. becoming the first woman in oscar s 82 years to win the directing award. there s no other way to describe it, it s the moment of a lifetime. oh, boy. the film, about a bomb disposal unit in iraq grossed only $16 million in theaters. but was a critics favorite. i d just like to dedicate this to the women and men in the military who risk their lives on a daily basis, may they come home safe. moments later, a breathless bigelow was back on stage to accept the best picture award. avatar s director, james cameron. kathryn bigelow s ex-husband, didn t take home any personal awards. but the billion-dollar blockbuster did win three awards. you protect his blind side. when you look at him, you think of me, how you have my back. actress sandra bullock won for her role in the blind side. as the real-life, tough-loving adoptive mom of a homeless high school football player. did i really earn this or did i just wear you all down? when i die, my tombstone will have my real name on it. until then, i ll just stay bad. jeff bridges finally won a bestctor award for his performance as a boozy and broken-down country singer in crazy heart. and thanked his parents, actor lloyd and poet dorothy. thank you, mom and dad for turning me on to such a groovy profession. the show ran a long three and a half hours. but hosts steve martin a alec baldwin kept things light. over here is the inglourious basterds section. and over here is the people who made the movies. hey. i ve been waiting a long time to touch you. christopher waltz won best supporting actor for his role as a charming and ruthless nazi in inglourious basterds. oscar and penelope, that s an uber-bingo. who will love me? for best supporting actress, monique won for her role as a despicable mother of an abused daughter in the movie precious. to my amazing husband, suddenny, thank you for showing me that sometimes you have to forgo doing what s popular in order to do what s right. and baby, you were so right. jeff bridges with as nominated for an oscar four other times, but never won. but we caught up with him after his best actor win last night. and th oscar goes to jeff bridges. after five nominations to hear that, was your heart pounding like crazy at that point? funny, ways sitting in the first row there. the whole thing was like the show is all for you. you know, you have to say something, the context of where you are. the crowd behind you. yeah. it s surreal. you got up on stage and i loved when you thanked your mom and dad. this is honoring them as much as it is me. you know, i m carrying on my dad s work, you know. and my mom s work. what would they think of their son tonight? they re loving it, yeah. they re very proud of their boy. so many characters that you have played through the years, what do you think it was about that cracter that resonated so much with the critics and with the academy voters? it might have bee the coming together of these, of these two loves of mine, you know, acting and the music. you know, you play in this movie, a chain-smoking, boozing, out of shape singer, songwriter. and i read recently that you were actually hung over during some of those scenes. since bad was a bat alcoholic guy, a point of me required me to earn the extra point of hagen daas and i might have of a little too much work. i especially want to thank my gorgeous wife, sue. this lady has sacrificed a lot to see you get to this point. yeah. what did it mean to you to see him up on the stage? it meant everything to me. so the oscars really as much susan s as it is yours? i ll say. we re good together. it s wonderful to win the oscars. are you glad it s finally done. it s over, on to my next assignment, the coen brothers true grit. is he goes to be insufferable? he s going to be gone. this is couple that s truly in love, as jeff said, 33 years in marriage. and held the family together. and has made him the actor that he is. he said he once heard some great advice, that to be a great actor, you have to know about love. and that s what he discovered about susan. so happy for him. and you could see the love from everybody. many thought it was aost a lifetime achievement award. but that performance stands on its own as a brilliant one. still ahead, the cast, screenwriter and one of the producers of the hurt locker will join us live. they haven t fallen off the couch yet. anthony, i want a commitment from you that you re not going to mess around, right? [ laughter ] well it was a total ad-libbing, lauer. anyway, a righ folks we ll see you in a couple of minutes. let s get the rest of the top stories of the morning. from ann standing at the news desk. good morning to you matt and all of you. in the news this morning, a powerful earthquake has struck eastern turkey, it was a magnitude six and it platened homes in at least six virileages a people slept. many are trapped in the rubble, 55 are known dead as and more than 100 are injured. the taliban is suspected in a massive bombing this morning in pakistan. it happened in lahore. digging a crater in a building where police interrogate high-value suspects, at least six people were killed. also in pakistan, officially trying to identify an arican arrested in karachi and linked to al qaeda. nbc s pete williams is following developments on the story. pete, there s been some confusion in pakistan about is man. what do we know? well we know this morning is that at first, pakistani officials thought they had arrested one of the fbi s most wanted terrorism suspects. a california-born man named adam gadon. he s appeared in a dozen al qaeda videos since 2004. each time, with calls to join the terror organization. in fact, his most recent one came out just a few days ago. gadon, is wanted in the u.s.n treason charges. the american officials yesterday scrambled to confirm that pakistani report, but now it turns out to be a case of mistaken identity. someone arrested with the name similar to one of gadon s aliases. today, pakistani officials say it s a different american, a low-level al qaeda member, but the u.s. embassy there has no confirmation this morning, even of that. ann? pete williams on this morning, thanks so much. votes are being counted today after sunday s parliamentary election in iraq. nbc s chief foreign correspondent, richard engel is in baghdad with more. richard, how crucial is this election? iraq and to u.s. troops? reporter: good morning, ann. they re very important for both iraqis and american troops. and today, iraqis we spoke to seem pleased with the way their election went yesterday. according to officials, voter turn-out was between 55 and 60%, that is a strong showing. now, official results just preliminary at this stage, are expected in three days. the problem is, that several of the candidates havelready begun to announce their own results and that could create false expectation and confuse the political process. it s very important that iraq remain stable during this period of political transition. because if law and order break down here, it will be more difficult for american troops to leave on schedule. ann? all right. richard engel this morning. thanks. we have a tragic discovery to tell you about in southern california. the remains were found over the weekend that have been identified as those of 14-year-old amg ber du bois, who disappeared a year ago. police would not say if the convicted sex offender accused of killing another nearby teenager is suspected in this case. gas prices are up about 10 cents a gallon the last two weeks, according to the lundberg survey, the average price is now $2.73 a gallon for regular. and as matt mentioned, police are hunting in germany for four people who stormed a poker tournament and made off with part ever $1.4 million jackpot. the men were armed with guns and machetes in the heist caught on tape and now police are looking for those men. it s now 7:12, let s go back to matt. we want to go right back out to los angeles, where mr. roker has got a check of the morning s weather. al. good morning again. good morning, matt. we finally, the rain stopped here in california, time for the oscars yesterday. but as we take a look at the midsection of the country, we ve got a slow-moving low pressure system, that s bringing a mix of sun and clouds to the four corners. we re looking at rain in texas. and this system is going to be really taking its own sweet time. anywhere from one to three inches of rain from dallas on into central texas. and we ve got heavier snows back through the rockies. during the day today, you can see we ve got a complex system of lows that are going to converge in texas tomorrow as high pressure keeps them interest moving east and that means beautiful weather on the east coast. 60 deges in washington, d.c., rain in northern california, on into the pacific northwest. look for rain in midsection of the country, heavy thunderstorms through dallas. we ve got sunshine and cool conditions as you work your way it s beautiful here, it will be just as nice as it was yesterday, we have got some clear sky to start your day, but temperatures range anywhere from the low 20s around culpepper an manassas, we will see a high today around 60 degrees and then close to 60 tomorrow with some high clouds, 30% chance of rain for wednesday. we re wet through next saturday. and that s your latest weather. matt. al, thank you very much. he has been called one of the most influential men in american politics. karl rove. presidents george w. bush s top adviser and a lightning rod for criticism among democrats. now rove said it s time to set the record straight about his life and career. his new memoir, courage and consequence: my life as a conservative in the fight comes out tomorrow. he ll join us tomorrow on today. but first, we recently sat down with rove for an exclusive interview ahead of the book s release. i can do most of this interview on what you write on page 64. let me give our viewers an example. here s what you write i have become an adjective. there s something called a rovian style of campaigning and it s meant as an insult. one prominent blogger described the elements of a textbook rovian race as fear-based, smear-based and anything goes. you know, that s a pretty nasty view of the american voting public it assumes that people are easily misled and people make a decision to vote for somebody, particularly the president of the united states on the basis of mean-spirited, nasty, vicious, despicable reasons and that s not what a campaign is about. i have more respect for the american public than that. they re not easily misled. they try to do a good thing when they go into the voting booth. and you say to believe all the bad things about karl rove. first you have to believe that the electorate is stupid. easily misled by dirty tricks, fear-and-smear politics. i can t imagine you would be calling the american electorate stupid. but isn t the rest of it somewhat true? no. people are misled by negative campaigns. otherwise, why would so many campaigns turn negative? i think most campaigns turn negative because they don t have something positive to say. and look, i think negative campaigns are like nitro, unstable, dangerous and oftentimes, dangerous to the people using them. are you asking me, are you asking the readers to believe that you are the only the architect of the positive things and took no ownership of the negative things? no, look, i outlined in the campaign a proper way to handle a negative attack. the charges or the allegations or the constant comments you hear about karl rove, he was the guy behind the whisper campaigns. in south carolina. right. that he was the guy with the push-pole question about john mccain and suggesting is it possible. how would you feel about the john mccain during the 2000 primaries if he were by some chance to have fathered an illegitimate black child. you say you had nothing to do with it. nothing to do with it. in fact i write about this in detail in the book. this is the kind of thing that the media love. these kind of allegations. but for people in practical politics, i got to tell you, i was seized with fear when this rumor began to circulate through south carolina. not very widely. sent out by a professor at bob jones university, a fellow named hand. i thought john mccain would seize it for what it was, it was an enormous opportunity to give an insight into who and his wife are. because they adopted, sydney mccain adopted a child from an orphanage in bangladesh who is their daughter. the story of this is an incredible tale of love and compassion. but rather than doing that, john mccain said i m a victim and was angry and complained about it and pointed the finger at bush, when he had no evidence whatsoever. it s hard to turn a smear into a positive. it s an artful process. but it s doable. and i talk about a number of examples in the book. while rove denies any involvement in any smears, some prominent republicans point the fing finger directly at him. here s what a prominent republican said about the campaign. the whole think was orchestrated by rove. sydney mccain, the same incident, you already set it up, the smear involved possibly an illegitimate black child. that it emanated from an email sent by an bob jones university professor to the people on his email list, which may have been 100 people. she clearly saw it differently. because when asked, if karl rove were to walk by here would you stab him in the back. i m paraphrasing but she said, no, i would stab him in the front. president bush s nat latimer said, he was what all the liberals said he was, a villain. he turned out to be a boris badinuv chasing rocky and bullwinkle. sydney mccain and fletcher and others needed somebody to blame. they didn t want to blame bush. it s hard to blame bush, he s a nice guy. so why not pick out the dough-faced balding guy behind the campaign and blame him. that s the way politics is. bush had a theory, better you than me. that s right, that came with the territory. we re going to have much more of our exclusive interview with karl rove in our next half hour. opening up about his personal life. how he learned he was adopted at the age of 19, mother s suicide and questions about his father s sexuality. and rove will join us for an exclusive live interview right here tomorrow. on today. just ahead, we ll head back to los angeles, meredith will check out all the hot fashions from last night s oscars. but first, this is today on nbc. it s happening everywhere. health insurance companies jacking up premiums. by 10% 20% even 60 percent in just the last few weeks, crushing small businesses and working families. now, desperate to block health care reform, insurance ceo s and their lobbyists are meeting this week in washington. if they win, we lose. congress, listen to us. not the insurance companies. pass health care reform now. just ahead from here in los angeles, we ll have much more on the oscars. i hold in my hot little hand, a letter sandra bullk gave me and said not to open until today. her prediction of who would win best actress. plus the cast of the the hurt locker. they re still awake. anthony, first thing you said? [ speaking foreign language ] that means this seemed like a better idea in rehearsal. ladies and gentlemen, john pryor, anthony michael hall, judd nelson, ally sheedy and mccauley kalken. john always tated me with dignitity. even the 9-year-old version of myself. because that s whey did, he treated people with respect. gabourey dibe, tonight, she is sitting at the academy awards in the same category as meryl streep. [ applause ] i tell you, if that isn a hollywood fairy tale, what is. and in case you couldn t see it the first time, this is sandra bullock s handwriting, clearly she predicted m. streep, as in meryl streep, would win the oscar. she actually after she won last night said about meryl, that she was a great kisser. something went on that night. i m not sure what that s about. but anyway, in the end, it was the hurt locker s night, six academy awards, including best picture. we re joid by the film s producer, greg shapiro, mark boal for best screenplay and two of the stars of the the hurt locker, anthony, behave yourself mackie and bryan garrity. first of all, guys, any sleep at all? no. we ve been going since when, 6:00, 4:00, 3:00 yesterday? i think it s monday now. this was billed as david versus goliath. goliath being avatar and david being the hurt locker. are you surprised to be holding those statues? or did you think deep inside, we got this one? no, i don t think we ever even imagined we would be here. althou we do all know how that david and goliath story ends. but i think it s just a trip for all of us to be here. and just really, just astonishing. anthony, i want you to pay attention to this, all right. this movie of yours grossed about 1% of what avatar produced. it s become the lowest-grossing best picture winner in oscar s history. we made history a few times. that s a pretty lofty title. why do you think it walked away with the title, anthony? i think if you look at the hurt locker, i think mark boal gave us three-dimensnal characters. and i think that s something that you rarely see in film-making. and i think that kathryn gave the actors the ability to go out and really transcend the idea of film-making by going out and developing those characters. and people gravitated towards that and people looked at that and really loved the idea of the hurt locker being a really good film and kind of identifying with our generation. and brian, you re looking at him like, boy, he gives a smart answer. you look a little surprised. we have to give some credit to kathryn. kathryn bigelow, the director as well. yeah, what she did with this film is incredible to all of us. and it s a movie, it was a movie that was, you wouldn t expect coming from a woman. this is an action movie, a war mov movie, she really turned the whole thing on its head. but this 2010. women are in war, women are mean people. but still, there have never been women who won as director. so this is a great moment. no question. and the thing about it is she didn t win because she was a woman. she won because she just happened to make the best film of the year. and it s great to say as actors and producers, and writers, that we were a part of that. it s great to say that we made the best movie of the year. and in her speech, she thanked the troops. those that are there and those that have come home. and you did as well, mark. but you also paid tribute to your dad, who passed away a month ago. can you tell us a little bit about him and what this would have meant to him to see his son up there? well he really, he really would have loved this. and yeah, he did, he passed away a little over a month ago. so it was really the best of times and the worst of times for me. but i feel like he s watching from up there. and i know he would have loved this. he probably would be shocked to see you in a tuxedo, because you re more of a baseball cap kind of guy than a bow tie. this is in fact the first tuxedo you ve ever bought, i understand? you say that like it s a bad thing. i think it s cool, you re a regular guy. what has this award season been like for you? it s been a trip. it s truly a wonderful experience, really, to be honored by so many different professional groups within the industry and to achieve this kind of really pinnacle of what the motion picture industry is all about. it s really tremendous. there s been a little controversy about one of the producers, your producer that was sent out an email. that some would say was disparaging to another movie, and was banned from the broadcast last night. yeah. really? what s that about? nick chartier. some in hollywood felt it was blown out of proportion. i don t know if was or it wasn t. but it s interesting because i just saw some of the folks behind avatar and john landau about an hour before coming over here. and i think we all know that in the heat of campaigning, things happen and mistakes are made and so forth. but i think it s at the end of the day, people evaluate the movies in and of themselves. do you think this resonated the way it did with the troops, in large part, anthony because it was not political? you were not taking sides. you were really just looking at the boots on the ground and what they re going through? 100%. i think when i first read the script and when we went into shooting and talking about it, it wasn t about who was right or wrong or what we believed or what we didn t believe. it was about, you know, when you go over there and you look at this, this is someone s mother, someone s father, someone s daughter, someone s loved one and that was something that we tried to get across when we were making the film. these are people over there, these are american citizens that we re working every day over here, trying to bring home and that s the story that we wanted to give to the public and ge to the soldiers over there. well you have every reason to be incredibly proud this morning, to enjoy it. and we, you know, the mimosas were for you guys, obviously, a toast. one last thing, when you were in new york, anthony, you and jeremy ran around the set when the nominations were announced. and you hugged him pretty tight i must say in the moment. there s a lot of man-loving going on last night as well. do i have reason to be worried? (guitar music) back now at 7:45, more of our exclusive interview with karl rove. how did he become a political mastermind? the architect of president george w. bush s two presidential wins? rove opened up to us about his personal life. which he writes about in great detail in his new memoir, courage and consequence. karl christian rove was born christmas day, 1950. the second of five children. what kind of kid were you? the pocket protector? i had the pocket protector. i had hush puppies. i carried a briefcase in the fourth or fifth grade. i was nerdville, complete. on his 19th birthday, karl rove s parents separated. his father, lewis, moved out. he came home christmas eve and shortly after coming home, he and my mother argued and he left. they, they separated. later that year, he found out that lewis rove was not his biological father. something he learned over a dinner with his aunt and uncle. i was 19 and i adored my aunt and uncle and during the course of a dinner wit them, she let drop that i was adopted. which i did not know. and it never changed your opinion of your father, meaning your adoptive father? well, over time did you say why didn t you tell me? i did, a year later, finally over dinner, i asked him. he said, it never mattered to me and i hope it never matters to you, whi is remarkable. and another shock to rove s family, his mother committed suicide when rove was 30. she drove into the desert, taped up the windows, put the connected the tapepipe to a hose and got in the car and killed herself. she left two notes behind. right. one note was to a law enforcement, to basically make it clear that this was not a murder. no foul play. no foul play. i ve never seen that note. i ve been, it s been described to me, but i ve never seen it and the other one was a letter addressed to her children. and at that point, she had two grandchildren. and she basically you know, said that she was sorry. but that life had been hard. she apologized for how this had made her act towards us. told us she was proud of us. and wished, you know, sent special greeting words to her grandchildren and said she loved us. you ve seen that note? yes, i have. you ve held that in your hands? yes. how do you deal with that? well, it s hard, i know, i, it s got to be something just terrible to have had look, life is rough for a lot of people. some people live in greater material circumstances than others, but life is rough for everybody. and to have five children who loved her and to have grandchildren and yet to feel that there s so little in your life that you re going to end it, has got to be just horrible. also in the book, rove tackles questions about his adopted father s sexuality. questions that became ammunition for his critics. the rumor was that he was gay and it was one of the reasons not only that your parents divorced, but that your mother eventually committed suicide. you write in great detail about that in the book and i m just curious why you decided it was so important. i wanted to set the record straight. because i mean again, this was a political attack on me. that in order to get to me, people had to say ugly things about my parents. i don t know whether my father was at the end of his life, was gay or not, i just don t. i don t think so, but i don t know. it s nothing you eversked him. did it ever cross your mind? no, not really. no. i mean, he dated a little bit after he, after he and my mother were together. my mother never said to us that their marriage fell apart because my father was gay. so the people who, the journalists who say, well obviously he was gay and karl had to know that, and this is why she committed suicide. they don t know what they re talking about. it seems to me that their story, in particular this episode and event in their story, is used by some to even go a step further, karl. and it is to say either you are one of two things. if you were the son of a gay man, then you were either traumaized by that and that may be the reason for your stance against things like gay marriage. or, that you re a hypocrit. that you couldn t feel that way about gay marriage, being the son of a gay father. if he were gay, then you know, then that was sufficient grounds for him to be, you know, reject me. he obviously didn t. but that s politics, our view on political issues, on issues of public policy, can and should be divorced from our families and our families shouldn t be used as convenient targets to shoot at in order to get at people in politic politics. and that s what, look, i wanted to set the record straight and it s not comfortable for me to write about my family. i m not comfortable writing about me. but i wanted to do this, in order to set the record straight. it was a chance to set the record straight about two people whom i loved a lot. and tomorrow, karl rove will join us live here in the studio for an exclusive interview. we ll talk about some of his toughest moments in the bush white house. including the war in iraq, the c.i.a. leak scandal, hurricane katrina and a lot more. that s karl rove live in studio, tomorrow here on today. still ahead this morning, much more on the academy awards, including the hits and misses from the red carpet. but first, these messages. the honey-baked bunches! the magic s in the mix. my favorite part? no, you re perfect. look at my suit tonight. oh, my god, i wasn t really looking, it s incredible. it s amazing! and we are joined by today style editor, bobbie thomas as well. good morning. let s start with sandra bullock s dress last night. because it really was her night. it was magnificent, that dress. my favorite of the evening. it s so classic and she ll look back on that moment and it will be timeless. because nobody forgets their oscar dresses, forever and ever. they roll those out. hers was classic and really elegant. she looked likes an oscar statue. it had a modern twist. she had, you know, this embellishment across the top. it wasn t completely safe and i loved the hair and makeup. and look at the lips, those were the best lips. so you liked the red lipstick. because some people did not. that s what you should wear. that was her accessory, it was this pucker that was perfect and i thought she looked amazing. she s not, i would say, a great natural beauty, compared to some of the others. what? what? just keeping it real. but last night, the most beautiful woman i saw. so you canurn it on with lipstick. well, she turned it on with the dress and the lipstick and the great talent to go with it. i think she s somebody who looks beautiful without a lot of makeup and hair. bobbie, you said last night was a bold red carpet. why do you use the term bold ? what are you talking about? i was shocked. for the oscars, we saw the carpet filled with risk-takers. there were so many people in texture and volume and looks that were literally love them or hate them. some people just slipped below the hard deck and, it s all over. first, charlize theron, she had an interesting shape to her dress, did it work or not work? unfortunately i m cringing as i say to this, my most disappointing of the evening. she knows better. she s an icon on the carpet and i thought that this wasn t sophisticated enough for her. why would you put a pair of pom-poms on a dress like that, seriously? it s fashion, i guess. i ll tell you what that is, it s about women dressing for women. and i think more women on the red carpet should think about men. and bobbie is saying, it s a look that didn t work for her. i think maybe a fashion event. but i think that for this, you want to be taken a little bit more seriously. what about distracted from her beauty. another mistake, zoe saldana. the top of her dress, very elegant. the bottom of her dress, risky. did she pull it off. i kind of love her. i know that people may not agree with me. i feel that every trend on the carpet was in this dress. that s what was shocking but she was so stunning. her skin tone was stunning. i think the bottom was a little much. it by givenchy. great two-thirds and on the bottom, it all goes horribly wrong. i m so happy, she wore this dress, it was exciting for me to see it. and where else and who else would wear that. sarah jessica parker getting a lot of talk. some people loved it. some people hate it you say no? i sat there and all night long i ve been getting ridiculed fornot, my husband s hand went on my leg, i got the death grip. like, don t move. so then i thought, well maybe i shouldn t. for once, i didn t run my redneck little mouth. and i got it, all night long everybody was giving me a hard time. sandy said, i can t believe i was expecting you to get up and holler and whistle. and. you were on your best behavior? i was. because she was has worked really, really hard at th. not only portraying me, but in her other movies. i felt like it was her moment. did she nail you? i think she nailed me pretty well. it scares my husband and jesse and our kids that there s two of us running around. let s go back to last night. what would you have said if you were up there with sandra. what would you have said to folks? i think what i would have said was that that little statue was getting to go home with her and jesse. and what a lucky little statue he was. but there s a lot of kids in this country that aren t so lucky. and you know, we firmly believe in our family that the kid that knows the cure for cancer is walking around, inner city, memphis, inner city l.a. and given opportunity and love, you know, you can change someone s life. and so i really would have said that i challenge everybody, you know, the people that were sitting in that room have the resources and the potential to make a difference. if just a few people would step up, i really think that we could wipe out the foster care and adoption issues that we have in this country. and yet, that wasn t something you were thinking about on that november day, when you saw this boy, michael, this big guy, walking in a pair of shorts in the rain. no, not at all. you know, because i didn t, none of us, shawn or myself, we didn t know what his needs were. we just really at that moment, just you know, thought this young man needed a ride. and then it was pretty apparent once you spent just some time with him at all, that his needs were much greater than that. what did you think. this is a movie that people didn t have a lot of expectations for. and yet, it became this juggernaut. it grew. why, both with critics and more importantly, the audiences. why do you think this film resonated so much with critics and audiences alike? i think people set in the movie and watched it and said, that s me. or i can do that or i did that. and i think they felt a connection that they realized that they could do what we did. or maybe not do it so great. or something you know, i m not saying that everyone needs to take in a 6 6 , 350-pound young man. but there are a lot of things that people can do. and i think it really challenged people that they said that you know, i want to do that. and look, there s people doing great things every day. our names just happened to be the ones connected with this movie. but regardless, we re still, we re still so humbled by it and we truly hope that people will get out and make a difference. i mean you know, make a difference, do something, do anything. and just don t sit there and not do something. how has this movie changed your lives? well, can you agine? look at me like what do you think? what kind of a stupid question is that? honestly, you said that and i said something to somebody last week. people do ask me, that stupid question. has it changed your life? yes, we go to the dealership. we write a check, they don t know it s consumer reports until we show up with a check that day. we take the cars and do 50 tests on every model. is 3,000 miles enough to get to know what a car is really like? that s kind of the break-in period. we live with the cars, we drive to the grocery stores. take them on trips, go to the dump with them. see how they haul stuff. see what the interior is like, everything like that. lots of different categories. we don t have time to go through one in every category. this is the small sedan category, you guys like the hyundai elanra, why? it comes can standard electronics stability control. electronic stability control is the safety feature that could the most impact to save lives since the seat belt was invented. the articles are honest, they list things you like about the car and things you don t. anything you didn t like about the car? the se is the only one that comes with sec corol. we re talking about the nissan this is the altima what category? a a family sedan. it didn t come with standard electric stability control across the line. we couldn t record it as a top pick. finally for 2010 upgraded the interior and put the standard feature on. one thing you were conceed about, the head room. low head room and a high sill. so if you have children, if they re not in a booster seat, they can t necessarily see out. okay. good to know. chevy. has a car on the top list. this is the traverse. what category does this fall into? this is in the family-friendly suv category. the three-row suv. it seats eight or seven passengers. what s nice about it, it gets decent fuel economy for a utility vehicle. 18 miles per gallon. nice interior, very good fit and finish. average reliability. good safety performance. do you talk about price points on these cars as well? we do. you ll see these starting in the low to mid 20,000 s, but with options, well up in the 30s. now you have a category of sporty cars, right? right. is that different than sports cars? it is different than sports cars. for years they wee had sports cars, raw-edged, two-seat convertibles, two-seat coupes. not really practical. so this year, we have sporty cars, the volkswagen gti. this car has been a top pick a lot of times? it s been a top pick. the problem with volkswagens and european in general is the reliability hasn t been there. so while it performs really well, we couldn t list it as a top pick or even reliability was so bad. but this interior is so nice, very comfortable, great fit and finish. it s roomy, two-door and four-door versions. if you go to the back of it, you can pop open the hatchback and carry a ton of stuff. you can see there s a lot of extra space to store things into the center there. it also gets 27 miles per gallon overall. it s on premium fuel. but it s comfortable, easy to drive around. but you can have a lot of fun with it. i have to mention, the time you did this research and then went to press with this, the toyota problems were just kind of unraveling. how did that impact their standing on some lists? yes, whatever you want to eat. and bobby is down here making us look at this burger, y all. bobby, what you re making is what s called the ultimate the ultimate potato salad. creamy potato salad. it s really simple, these are roasted fingerlings, i ve got a whole-grain muard, a little mayonnaise, lemon juice, some basil and parsley. and i m just going to toss these together, so i don t mash them up. just a simple, creamy potato salad, something we love in a salad. look at this burger. i m going to take a bite. i don t know that i can get my mouth around it. i bet you can. i m going to have lipstick around my chin. uh-oh. okay. here you go. you know what i really love is how much flavor you come on in here, matt, i just made you this burger. you didn t tell us how you made the spicy catchup? we take some peppers and sauce and vinegar and it takes sometime to cook it down into a pot. it s a neat way to jazz something up if you change an ordinary condiment. just to add some spices. what we have here is a pepperjack burger. and you don t think you can get your mouth around that, but you think i can? when i die, my tombstone will have my real name on it. until then, i m just going to stay bad. hollywood hometown darling, jeff bridges, finally won a best actor award for his performance as a boozy, and broken-down country singer in crazy heart. and thanked hirs pampb eed his lloyd and poet dorothy. thank yo mom and dad, for turning me on to such a groovy procession. the show rang three and a half hours. but hosts steve martin and alec baldwin kept it light. over here is the inglourious basterds section. and over here, the people who made the movies. christopher waltz won best supporting actor toor his role as a charming and ruthless nazi in inglourious basterds. oscar and penelope, that s an uber-bingo. who else was going to love me? for best supporting actress, mo nique won for her role as a despicable mother of an abused daughter in the movie, precious. to my amazing husband, sidney, thank you for showing me that sometimes you have to forgo doing what s popular in order to do what s right. and baby, you were so right. so those were the winners inside the kodak theater. but who stole the show on the red carpet? for all the hits and misses, we ve got today s style editor, bobbie thomas and celebrity hair stylist, jonathan anton, a hair stylist on bravo. jonathan, you look fantastic. i ve been doing hair all night long, i haven t been home. on the red carpet, doing hair, to the today show. nonstop. first of all, sarah jessica parker. bobbie, you talked about her being a fashion risk-taker. we want to talk about her hair. yes, okay. well you know, sarah s hair to me it was the right idea, wrong execution. you know, you can see the back of her hair, it s almost bigger than her face. it s almost bigger than her head. it had a little bit of the elephant man sized back of her head going on. i didn t understand it she s so petite. too big in the back. what about the dress, bobbie? it s an interesting choice. i don t hate it. think she wanted to be avant-garde, i think she s got a lot of pressure to be carrie, sex in the city. aren t you supposed to be sexy? see that s the thing i m cog to you from the style perspective, not the sexy perspective. but she still looks kind of pretty she did. i think the gown is gorgeous, it definitely was a statement. but not everybody s favorite. all right. now let s move on to cameron diaz. jonathan, you give her the best gown do of the night. i give her the best everything of the night. i think she absolutely looked amazing. i m hear oh, from bobbyie. but i m telling you, her hair and dress she usually does a lot of color. i loved how she had the old-school classic, timeless, hollywood look. i loved her hair, i loved heifer makeup. i m sorry, bobbie, i loved her dress. cameron is a beautiful woman, but i felt the hair was a little dated. and it made the dress a little matronly. it does look like 40s. when you top it off, without the dress, when you see the whole look when you see her without the dress? when you see just the hair and makeup. i was talking about the dress, of course. got it, okay. demi moore, jonathan, you liked what she was doing with her hair? i liked, i like demi s whole look last night. i thought it was a great back-do. a really loose, kind of the new up-do. it s a back-do. it s loose, swept on one side. i thought she looked incredible. i didn t like the color of her dress. but i liked the dress. i thought demi looked hot. what did you think of the color of the dress, bobbie? well, you really look at your use. you know, which we ll get to when we get to the closet. it s all about sort of how much you re using the things that you have. because some of us have more than we need, really. the first place you need to go to figure out what you re using is to be able to see things well. and so what we ve done today is for ten years eve been telling people how to organize things. this is an innovative way to organize your jewelry and accessories, take a humble pegboard you can get at a hardware store, you can paint it a bright color, keep it white. you can mount it on the back of your closet door, keep it inside your closet. depend ogen what sort of jewelry and accsories you wear, you can display them easily. you can hang a mirror, do the julia child thing and outline things and show where things go. and you can do something similar with a regular coatrack. this is something you can mount in your closet. i ve seen this used for jewelry. you can hang necklaces on these hooks or do belts and scarves and hats. these just a couple of inexpensive items that you might have already have around your house, your basement and your garage. and speaking of which, this is a very interesting idea you have for your closet. you have all of these pieces hung basically backwards. if you can see this, you guys, they re hung so that the hanger goes this way, right? and you do that for a purpose. the idea is, we re heading into spring, as you re getting out your spring clothes, take everything, hang it all the same way. so if you hang everything facing out an then as you wear the item, turn it around and hang it back that way. by the end of i m not sure we saw that. what she s saying if it s hung this way all of it, after you wear it, turn it around the other way. and as a result, you know what? you see by the end of the season, you see what you ve worn. if you have some things that have not been turned around, that tells you something? yeah, time to donate. time to it s so hard to get rid of things. or put in another class et that isn t cluttering your main closet. i m putting box aside. i know if i can give it to salvation army or somebody who is going to benefit. it will be okay to get rid of it. you feel i m not wearing this, someone should. all this closet product by the way is real simple product from bed, bath and beyond. many of the things were designed with multipurposes in mind. all of the hangers are uniform. which creates more space inour closet. if you paint your closet a bright color, it helps you sort of see the space a little bit better. it makes it, organizing your closet, a much more palatable task. we ve attached a badry-powered l.e.d. light. a lot of closets have a lot of darkness problems. so those are, you know, $9 easy to find. you don t have to rewire your whole closet. so here we have sweater organizers, now you can see, you know, organizing your sweaters is really basic. you start with the heavy things on the bottom. here we ve organized by color. but you can also take a sweater organizer. and hang it say, in your linen closet, hank it in a guest room closet. and you can use this kind of space, if you don t have enough shelving, youan put all kinds of things on this organizer. you ve got this little device. this is a great purse organizer. really easy to see what you have on any given moment. but it can also serve as a kid s toy organizer. it won t pinch little fingers. really easy for kids, moms and dads to access. here s one of my favorite ide ideas, you have a basic tissue box. when you re finisd with the tissues, if you re like me, you ve got a lot of this around your house. if you don t always remember to take the reusable grocery bags to the store. rather than having this big explosion of plastic under your kitchen sing, just use a tissue box to ganize them. i love that idea. that s just brilliant. because then you re multipurposing this plastic. and really quickly because we re running out of time. you have napkin holders to organize your bills. and here? this is for a desk drawer. it s so hard to find desk drawer organizers that fit your drawers. can you make one one out of a loaf pan and take them out when you need them. coming up next, rock shrimp thnchts morning in today s kitchen, delicious around easy rock shrimp tempura, that anyone can make at home. the chef known as the food buddha is the executive chef at chicago s famed sundha rest russian. tempura is something that i would never attempt to make at home because i thought it was hard to make. it s very simple. you can get store-bought tempura flour. which we ll use here. very simple. this is one of our signature dishes at sundha. our premiere rock shrimp tempura. we ll add water and give it a light stir. you want to keep it a little lumpy. it s what gives it the lightness. so you don t want to beat it. you don t want it completely smooth. you want it to have the clumps of flour. so at the restaurant, we take a little bit of our rock shrimp and we dredge it in the tempura flour. so then we put in the tempura batter. so i m going to do this here. and we ll fry up a little bit, very quick. quick and easy. now you actually freeze, do you freeze you can, like if you need to do it ahead of time for a party, can you take it to this point after you do the flour. after you batter it, exactly. and then so the fun thing, too, not fun, but if you coat your hands with the tempura flour and you drop it into the oil, it protect you from the splash. so you can just drop it in. that s great. and you want to keep it separate. keep it separate, kind of let it run through your fingers. and the oil is very, very hot. the oil is about 350. here we use canola oil. in the rest you want we seuss a tempura brand oil. and it cooks fast. exactly. what else we use the tempura batter for is for binding. we make corn fritters at the restaurant. we take fresh corn, scallions, celery, coriander, which is ground and fresh garlic. so here garlic. hey, how are you, good morning? i heard garlic. good morning. ann used to make tempura. these are beautiful, great. what i do is i mix tempura flour. so it coats it and i add water, which gives me this texture, where it s sort of creaminess. but it sticks together. sort of pasty. so it holds the shape of the fritter as i drop it into the oil. should i check on these? i did not. i couldn t either. it s hard to stay up that late, but there was a battle in new york over cablevision putting the oscars on tv. i had people saying i don t have the oscars because my cable has dropped nbc. 15 minutes into the actual ceremony they came back on. they caved in. so there was drama beforehand, but i enjoyed the oscars. does that mean they came to binding arbitration or agreed to? they say they are hammering out details, but i would have loved to be in a room with cablevision and nbc at 8:30 when the oscars were startingqf and they were probably saying somebody just push a button and put the show on. well, i did see the top, and i was surprised to see neil patrick harris there. right. i thought, was is the emmys or tonys? so, that was unusual. then i thought steve and alec were sensational. i loved them. i love them individually. i thought they were great together. i thought they were so much fun. and it was quite the day for what was going on here? oh, yeah, their big entrance. oh, yeah, from the sky that was good. that was good. they just had just the right attitude. i think we have a little sound. let s listen in, in case you missed it. ladies and gentlemen, i am pleased to introduce actor, writer, musician, grammy and emmy winner, one of the most enduring entertainers of all time, mr. steve martin. thank you. thank you very muc thank you. and this is alec baldwin. anyway, anyway. some surprises. all four of the top acting awards went to brand new first-time nominees, which i think is, you know, adds a whole bunch of excitement to the thing. it was such a big night for kathryn bigelow and hurt locker. yep. she made history, being the first woman ever to win director. she sure did. it s kind of fun when it s nice when the night has kind of a theme or a tone. and when they won best picture, i think a lot you were pulling for them, weren t you, for best picture? you know, i was i don t know. i watched hurt locker twice. it s a really brilliant film, obviously, and tough to watch in places. yeah. but i loved avatar for just the technical aspects of it and the story and the spirituality of it. either one i thought deserved it. i was just surprised you know, it had such a low box office, hurt locker, and avatar grossed like $2 billion and that grossed, i don t know what it was. the lowest grossing best picture sie they ve been looking the this ever. it s amazing. although that will change. although this is not for everybody, by any means. i was glad for sandra bullock, weren t you? who doesn t love sandra bullock? plus, she gets it. her tone was spot on. she didn t make there s a humility about her. yes. that sometimes is lacking in show business. you don t sense that this woman is completely into herself. she s at ease in the world. well, the great thing is, she won a razzie for worst actress the day before. showed up to acct that award and that s a classy thing to do. let s listen, in case you missed her speech. did i really earn this or did i just wear y all down? your grace and your elegance and your beauty and your talent makes me sick. helen, i feel like we are family, through family, and i don t have the words to express just what i think of you. and meryl, you know what i think of you and you re such a good kisser. i just like her tone. and she also went on to thank her mom, which was very touching and sweet at the end. let s make sure we tell everybody that she won the razzie for a different movie, all about steve. yes it was not for it was not for blind side. i saw the last barbara walters special, the last one ever yeah, i missed that. i was out. i can tell you, the retrospective was phenomenal. yeah. just to really watch through the years. i thought it was beautiful and i was thinking back about that, because sandra bullock was on, and she said i m not going to cry because my mom doesn t like criers on stage. when people get up and accept an award and say this is like the best day of my life, she was thinking, really? the best day of all, better than when your kids were born, this was born she just wanted sandra to keep life in perspective. keep life in perspective. she was raised that way. yes, she was. i fell asleep somewhere after mo nique and wokeup to jeff bridges thanking the world. so, i was so thrilled for him. he is just beloved and he came from it s a family dynasty, the way the douglases are and the families. so real. and i love that he s married to the same woman, they re still in love. yes. if you haven t seen crazy heart, it s a brilliant, brilliant performance, and i can t imagine anyby else in that role. maybe kris kristofferson, you know. somebody like that. sam elliott, somebody like that but i m so happy for him. what do you think of the clothes and stuff?
