WRC Today July 6, 2010
captions paid for by nbc-universal television and welcome to today on this tuesday morning out here on the plaza. it s already sticky and steamy. i m meredith vieira. that s right. matt lauer has the morning i m. i m ann curry. it s so hot i actually broke into a sweat coming to work today and not for the usual reasons. that s right. i don t know what the usual reasons would be, actually. it s actually 84 degrees. this one says 81 but over there we have another that says 84 degrees and, you know what, it s supposed to be 100 by lunch time in the northeast. i brought my spritzer just in case. lenny, can i spritz you? this crowd is going to stay nice and cool, but there are advisories in effect from the nation s capital all the way to boston. tomorrow is actually supposed to be the most humid of all the days in this heat stretch. we ll have the latest straight ahead on when it will end. a very serious topic, america s two wars reaching a crossroads. more u.s. troops are now set to leave iraq and general david petraeus is now in charge in afghanistan. he took charge over the weekend. so what will it take to achieve victory on both fronts? we ll go to afghanistan for a team report to get the answer this morning. okay. plus, to stay cool today, you might want to head into a restaurant that has air conditioning but stay away from the hamburgers or be careful what you put into your mouth. the startling amount of fat and calories in popular brands including one with a staggering 123 grams of fat, nearly double what you should eat in a day. but it looks good. very good. but we re going to begin with the sweltering heat wave in new york and all along the east coast. a hop skip and away in south park for us, stephanie gosk. reporter: if you re going to run or bike in central park today, this is the time to do it. forecasters are predicting 100 degrees here. it hasn t hit 100 degrees in the park since 2001. i m standing here, even though it s early morning, that prediction seems pretty accurate. it s supposed to be hot in the summer, but does it have to be this hot? an intense heat wave is driving temperatures into the sweltering heights from new hampshire to virginia. it s scorching hot. reporter: miserable, oppressive, just short of record breaking heat. the good news is this heat wave will be short-lived. it will move toward the south and west as we make our way to the end of the week. reporter: little comfort for everyone who will have to sweat their way back to work today after the holiday weekend. triple digits expected all along the east coast driving hoards of people to the beach for relief. connecticut actually had to close the gates at one of its public beaches over the weekend. it got too crowded. in washington, d.c., dedicated fourth of july tourists, still visited the memorials but they weren t happy. it wasn t this hot when we left georgia. reporter: in central park runners and sunbathers weren t deterred with what the weather service is calling potentially dangerous conditions. the national weather service is advise i advising people to just stay out of direct sun light. yeah. as soon as i m done, i m going back into my apartment. reporter: the most vulnerable are the very young. don t want to be out here in the middle of the day. reporter: and the very old. new york city has set up 600 cooling centers offering free air conditioning. a lot of people like me don t have air conditioning. and this is a nice place to come to. reporter: so the actual temperature people should just pay attention to and the heat index, how hot it feels. the humidity will be on the rise making those 100s feel even hotter. if that s even possible. meredith? yeah, dangerous. stephanie gosk, thank you so much. the weather channel s scott williams is in for al. actually, he s inside where it s nice and cool. what s wrong with that picture? well, good morning there. certainly, meredith, we are continuing to be in the midst of a heat wave and some good advice later today would be to stay indoors. heat advisories stretch from the mid-atlantic into new england and we re talking about feels like temperatures well over the century mark in many locations including the nation s capital, philadelphia, and even new york city. look at the current temperatures right now. it s 83 degrees for you in new york city. that is a typical high temperature for this time of year. so with temperatures already starting off on a warm note, you know that is going to get hot later on this afternoon. in fact, many records are in jeopardy here. central park, we could hit 102 degrees today. and if that holds true, it will be the first time we hit the triple digits since august 9th of 2001. ann, back to you. scott, nbc s chief foreign correspondent richard engel spent a lot of time in kabul, afghanistan. richard, good morning. reporter: the u.s. military announced five american troops were killed in afghanistan yesterday as the united states is redefining the war plans both here in kabul and in baghdad. america s two wars in iraq and afghanistan are both at crossroads. in iraq, the mission is to hang on and prevent the country from slipping back into violence as american troops draw down to just 50,000 by the end of august. the drawdown has risks. although violence is nothing like it was three years ago. al qaeda in iraq still carries out attacks. militias are rearming. and four months after national elections, there s no government in baghdad. without central authority, gains could slip away. this weekend vice president joe biden visited u.s. troops and iraqi politicians. he told nbc news withdrawal plans remain on track. hundreds of tons of equipment has already left iraq. it s not like august we go, boom, we re now down from 145,000 down to 50,000. reporter: america s longer war in afghanistan is a bigger challenge now run by the man widely credited with turning around iraq, general david petraeus, officially took command in kabul this weekend. he said u.s. and nato troops are determined to win this fight. after years of war, we have arrived at a critical moment. we must demonstrate to the afghan people and to to the world that al qaeda and its network of extremist people will not be able to establish sapg wears in afghanistan from which they can launch attacks on the afghan people and on freedom loving nations around the world. reporter: but in afghanistan general petraeus faces a resurgent taliban, more difficult terrain than in iraq, and an afghan government accused of corruption. u.s. commanders tell nbc news general petraeus strategy to turn the war around will be both to intensify the fight against the taliban to simultaneously encourage negotiations for a settlement. a two-pronged approach fighting harder while opening the door wider for peace talks. afghanistan s president hamid karzai also supports reaching a peace deal with the taliban. ann? richard engel this morning, thanks. msnbc s rachel maddow has spent the last several days embedded with the 82nd airborne, including the self-described spiritual center of kandahar. she is in kabul this morning where she joins us. rachel, good morning. reporter: good morning, ann. thank you. you ve been touring reporter: i spent some ti time go ahead. sorry to interrupt. you ve been touring the regional command by helicopter including in kandahar where the u.s. is about to launch a major offensive. what can you tell us about what you re learning about the offensive there? reporter: i was able to fly over it it by helicopter, as you say. i also spent a long time in a mine resistant armored vehicle traveling through the city and spent some time on foot in the center of the city seeing the sort of ring of steel of afghan national police set up around kandahar city and some of the police substations inside. we ve been hearing for a long time that the kandahar offensive has been delayed. it s been pushed back. that s the common wisdom, i think, in american circles. it s very clear here in afghanistan that it s very much under way. it hasn t been delayed. it just doesn t look like a war movie. it looks like setting up afghan governance. no one ex mrekts house-to-house combat operations in kandahar city. some of that will happen in the outlying areas n. kandahar proper what you re looking at is setting up afghan governance and there s a sense of urgency to do that because of the american de deadline to start leaving next summer. let s talk about that. it s a year from now that the u.s. troops are scheduled to leave. we re 104 months into the war. afghanistan is now the longest war in u.s. history. so is this deadline of leaving a year from now, beginning to withdraw a year from now, actually realistic? reporter: there have been a lot of critics who have said that deadline doesn t make sense in terms of military strategy. but i think that s only true if you think of war, this kind of war, as if it s some kind of d-day every day. it s really not like that. counter insurgency doesn t look like that. the point of this strategy is to set up an afghan government so afghanistan is essentially hardened against the taliban coming back into power and against afghanistan again making these extremist groups. the deadline is not the military strategy. it s so the afghan government feels like they really have to get their act together and stand up and get it done. i have to tell you that the counter insurgency doctrine may not work, it may not work no matter what we do to try to set up the afghan government here, but it definitely won t work without a deadline at least in kandahar, not based on what i ve seen. you ve been talking about community building there in kandahar, the city of kandahar proper. richard has been reporting part of general petraeus new strategy will be to intensify the fight against the taliban. what are you learning about how fierce the fighting might be in the coming months? reporter: well, we saw some foreshadowing of it in the helmand province in february led by the u.s. marines and british forces. there will definitely be highly kinetic combat operations in areas outside kandahar city some time between now and the end of the year. however, that s not the whole operation in kandahar. the bulk of what s happening in kandahar is to set up people with their government and link kandahar government with kabul. linking kandahar to kabul is something that historically would be rather unique in this country. we shouldn t expect this to be something decided on the basis of the success of those combat operations. counter insurgency is about governance than house-to-house oreg or orchard-to-orchard fighting. i know this is your first trip into the region. what is the most powerful takeaway you ve had so far? reporter: i don t mean to sound sappy, ann, but the thing i feel most overwhelmingly is just how humbling it is to be alongside the american troops here. the american troops that are here i believe from what i have seen them do, they can do any military mission that is assigned to them, and i believe that whatever the u.s. military tries to do, even in those hard places in southern afghanistan, they will do. but you can also tell when you re here that even if everything goes perfectly on the military side, that will only determine about 20% of the variables that need to be determined in terms of the success of this war effort. it really is up to the afghan people. americans will clear that space. it is humbling to see them in action. they re working so hard and they re so good at it. whether or not the afghans step up is whether or not there s something you can really think of as a victory here. on that note we leave it. rachel maddow, be safe out there and thank you so much this morning. you can catch the rachel maddow show live tonight and tomorrow on msnbc. and now a check of the rest of the morning s top stories with ann over here, lester holt is filling in at the news desk. lester, good morning to you. good morning to you. hello, everybody. we have confirmation this morning that oil from the bp leak has reached every gulf coast state. officials say tar balls scooped up near galveston, texas, this weekend were from the blown well. what they don t know is if it drifted on its own or got stuck to a ship and came in that way. most of the offshore skimming operations are still on hold because of choppy seas. a mile under water the well is simply too deep for a diver to reach, so the underwater work of containing the gusher has been largely left to remotely operated vehicles or rovs. by now we re familiar with the pictures. one of these rovs has been providing, but it s more than just a camera. nbc s kerry sanders joins us with more on how the repair teams are extending their reach. kerry, good morning. reporter: well, good morning, lester. i m in a company called oceaneering that make and staff the rovs. this is the camera we ve been seeing providing that picture to the whole world. and then you see these are the arms that twist and turn, pull and pry. i ve been in touch with the crews that are actually out at the site and they provided a snippet of video of their high-pressure world. cell phone video of a pilot and co-pilot at the controls of one of the rovs now deployed at deep water horizon. their cockpit is onboard this ship, the ocean intervention three, with joysticks and manipulators like these controlling every twist, every saw, push and pull, and every grab the rov makes one mile down. and more than 400 miles away at mission control, consulting engineers. it might be a good idea to hold back for now. reporter: we were given unique access in houston. they ve nicknamed this the hive because often it s the center of all activity. they re the eyes, the ears, they re everything. reporter: it s an underwater ballet choreographed on the fly, four, six, eight, at times 12 rovs in and around the broken well head. the highest concentration of these so-called fish ever assembled in one spot. it wouldn t be near as efficient if it were well planned out. reporter: jason on rotation after three continuous weeks on the site. we work 12-hour shifts. you stare at a computer screen all day long more or less. you get your eyes worn out sometimes. reporter: this is the controller. this is much like the stick that you find in a fighter jet. interesting with the folks here at oceaneering say the 20-somethings they hire that are particularly good at this job have been playing video games their whole lives. lester, there is something, some skill that s being learned, that your kids can some day actually use. they re not wasting their time just playing those games. watch where you re driving by the way, kerry. thanks. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu traveled to washington this morning for today s meeting with president obama. relations between the u.s. and israel have been strained over israel s settlement policy. on sunday netanyahu endorsed the u.s. call for direct talks between israel and the palestinians. stocks gained ground in europe and asia overnight. cnbc s trish regan is it at the new york stock exchange. trish, what are investors keeping an eye on this morning? reporter: a few investors are coming out of the woodwork looking for potential bargains out there. the reality is a lot of folks still remain really concerned about a potential global slowdown, a derailment of this recovery effort that we ve seen under way. it s becoming more and more fragile. u saw a lot of negative economic reports last week certainly accumulated with that friday jobs report. the question now is whether this recovery we ve started to see is really sustainable. you now have the s&p 500, the nasdaq, and the dow all at their lowest levels in six months. trish, thanks very much. and a tip of the hat this morning to the baseball fan who used his head and his cap last night to snare a foul at the mets home game. hats up. there s the catch. where s the mitt? doesn t need one. yo, he says. it s now 7:17. back to meredith, ann and scott. sign him up. good morning. around our region, too, we are under this heat advisory, and we could have afternoon temperatures getting above 100 degrees. right now it s 80 in washington. 70s in the suburbs and rurals area. and then tomorrow we ll have more humidity around. highs again around 100 degrees. and then a break from the heat, though it s still humid on thursday and friday. and a chance for much-needed rain, both of those days. and we might get some thunder showers saturday as well. and that s a look at your weather. meredith? scott, thank you very much. britain s queen elizabeth is making a quick trip here today with scheduled stops at ground zero and the united nations. but it is her financial situation at home that has folks buzzing across the pond. nbc s martin fletcher is at buckingham palace for the story. martin, good morning to you. reporter: meredith, good morning. you know when britain s in serious financial trouble when the queen herself has to tighten her belt. she s down to her last $25 million of money according to the budget that could run out in two years. the roof of buckingham palace has been leaking for years and officials say there s no money to fix it. there s no suggestion she ll end up living in a tent, but while the queen was visiting canada this weekend on her way to new york today, her staff in london was desperately looking for budget cuts. with britain facing recession, the queen has to be seen to be doing her bit. with typical british understatement. the monarchy as an institution is in slight financial trouble. buckingham palace is actually falling to pieces. reporter: the queen costs the subjects a dollar a head, down 8% from the year before, but that isn t near enough. possible new victims of the bottom line, garden parties. last year costs actually went up by $150,000 to more than a million. food cost the palace $750,000 a year. pomp and circumstance cost $200,000. carriage processions. you ll find that the palace will try to organize a better system going forward. reporter: there have been savings in uniforms, computers. senior staff have had pensions frozen, even taken pay cuts. i think it s important for her majesty, the queen, to make sure she s mirroring what s going on in the country. at the moment the government is slashing budgets all over the place. reporter: but surely you can t put a price on tradition and national pride. is nothing sacred? you can t start devaluing a dinner when you have a head of state coming in. it s a bit like saying, well, sorry, there are only sandwiches tonight. you can t do it. reporter: cucumber sandwiches for president obama. today the queen will visit new york, her first visit in 34 years. she ll lay a wreath at ground zero and speak at the general assembly of the united nations as head of 16 member states. meredith? martin fletcher at buckingham palace for us this morning, thank you very much. and still ahead, kyron horman s parents answer new questions about exactly what happened on the day the 7-year-old disappeared and why they remain hopefu coming up on today, i don t know a lot about golf, but that is a lot of green. why a tiger woods didvorce settlement could reach into the hundreds of millions. and a much lighter note, the fast food burger that s the equivalent of eating 13 sliders and what you should be ordering instead. wow! chevy traverse. a consumers digest best buy, with a 100,000 mile, powertrain warranty. it seats eight comfortably - not that it always has to. now, get 0% apr for 60 months on a 2010 traverse with an average finance savings of around fifty four hundred dollars. see your local chevy dealer. it s new beneful incredibites. ever seen anything like it? coming up, the jaw dropping amount of money being discussed in his reported settlement with elin nordegren. we will begin this half hour with a new statement from the parents of missing 7-year-old kyron horman. nbc s miguel almaguera is in portland, oregon, with more. miguel, good morning. reporter: meredith, good morning. the holiday weekend was certainly a trying time for kyron s family and with it came some troubling new allegations made against his stepmom. his parents did answer a written statement from reporters but they would not talk directly about all of the twists and turns in this case. late monday night kyron horman s biological parents went through fourth of july without their son, missing over a month. a little boy, they say, who would cover his ears when fireworks exploded. kaine horman wrote of a heartwrenching holiday. but neither parent would comment on swirling speculation around kyron s stepmom, terri horman, the last known person to see kyron alive. an oregon newspaper is now reporting roughly six months before kyron disappeared, terri tried to get a landscaper she hired to kill her husband, kaine. the oregonian reports terri offered the landscaper a, quote, large sum of money to carry out the hit. there was some problem in this family before kyron s disappearance, so, you know, we wondered, well, why would someone do this to their stepson? this idea that perhaps there was anger at her husband. reporter: the report says the landscaper went to investigators after terri tried to hire him for murder, and police went under cover with him as he spoke to terri again. that s when she, quote, shut down the conversation. terri horman has since been questioned about the plot and reportedly denied it. you can t rush to judgment based on any of it. we have the ol gags out there now relative to this attempted murder plot. obviously the police don t have sufficient evidence to make an arrest because they haven t. reporter: three weeks after kyron went missing reports say kaine horman was told about his wife s murder-for-hire plot. he then moved out of the home he shared with terri, took their 18-month-old daughter with him, filed for divorce and was grant add restraining order. terri, who has a high-profile criminal defense attorney, has never made a public statement. detectives won t talk about the murder-for-hire plot but last week the sheriff said terri was working with detectives in the search for kyron. she has been cooperative throughout this entire process. beyond that, i couldn t comment. reporter: horman has never been named a suspect in kyron s disappearance but after pressure from detectives, sources say she has taken two polygraph tests. in their new statement, kyron s mother and father say terri hasn t been cooperating with investigators to find kyron for weeks. they have begged her to help find their boy. we implore terri horman to fully cooperate with the investigators to bring kyron home. in that family statement, kyron s mom says she still can t bring herself to make kyron s bed saying, quote, she likes to see that it s been slept in. kyron s parents are still optimistic their little boy is alive. meredith? is. and we hope they re right. miguel almaguera, thank you very much. criminal profiler pat brown has been following the horman case and is the author of the profiler: my life hunting serial killers and psychopaths. good morning to you. good morning, meredith. police have not confirmed this story of the murd murder-for-hire plot but in your opinion how credible do you think it is? well, it does have a possibility of being very credible. it all depends whether they can prove that. in other words, sometimes when people really make a decision that they want to get rid of somebody, they go to somebody that s near to them and interesting she picked the landscaper because a lot of times when you have people coming to your home to work, handyman, landscapers, painters, most of them are great people but there s also a portion of them that can get work easily without working for a company, without going through a background check. some of them have criminal backgrounds. i ve hired somebody who ended up having a criminal background. he told me he had been in jail for murder for 15 years. i said, oh, my god, now who have i hired? so these people can show up at your house. if that s someone who showed up, a criminal background, hmm, this person could be useful to me. i m not saying the landscaper had that, but she might be thinking that way. the landscaper came forward only recently although he says this was hatched six months before kyron s disappearance. does his delay in reporting it hurt his credibility? it does in a sense because you wonder why wouldn t he come forward right away? but if he does have, perhaps, a criminal background or thought, she s just crazy, people don t respond the way we think when someone asks them that. this woman asked me to kill her husband, i think she s just nuts, and they re afraid to go to the police and tell them. if they have a criminal background, police are going to say, they won t believe me. he also he also could be an attention seeker himself. he could be saying, hey, i m going to say this and this will make me important. so the police have to be careful when they interview him whether he s telling him the truth. i think that s why they wired up the guy and had terri come in again to see if they could get some information that would have her basically say this has actually happened. they obviously don t have enough because they haven t arrested her. even if she is involved in a murder-for-hire plot that doesn t automatically mean she s involved in the disappearance of her stepson? that s right, meredith. first of all, what might have happened, she has to have her radar up. why now is he talking about this? are the police setting me up? she could have also said something like, i know when i said that to you, i was just joking around. i never meant anything like that. that would not really prove she wanted him to do it if she said that. that may have been the reason they couldn t go forth with any charges. if she did indeed say something like this or did want to hire this man, it has a lot of meaning in this case because it shows the propensity of this woman who happened to do something very violent to get rid of a family member in that way. it shows psychopathy and she ll go to any measure to get what she wants. if she did do it, it s very important. given the latest developments and what we know so far, the profile of terri horman you ve drawn up, what is it? well, at this point it s hard to tell if the information coming in is accurate on her. if it is, it doesn t look toward personality disorder but i can t say that s true because i don t know how much of the information factor. we do have a woman who shows a level of narcissism, with her body building, which looks like steroid use to me from the pictures. she jumped in to take care of the baby when her friend was ill. that sometimes shows attention seeking. she could just be a wonderful person. is this the kind of person does she love to have herself be the center of attention? sometimes that s a sign of narcissism. we don t know. we re getting such information we re not quite sure about it. the fact the police although she has never been named a person of interest or a suspect, they seem to focus on her all the time. they say this is an isolated incident, this is not something serial, people don t need to pan i can. every day goes bi-you wondif th all their proverbial eggs in the basket. it is very obvious to me she is the person of interest and the only person of interest because they have said they re not looking for a sexual predator and if they re not looking for a sexual predator, then it has to be a family member and obviously the focus has been on terri horman. everything has been on terri horman especially when they put the flyers out with her face on it and the truck. that shows me they re looking at what she was doing that day. they want information about her and her alone. so the problem, did she commit this crime? does she have a personality disorder, psychopathy where she wanted to eliminate kyron for some reason, maybe to get into the media. look at me. maybe she loves csi. maybe he was bothersome to her. maybe she was angry at her husband. whatever psychopathic reason, is that what she has done? [ female announcer ] just don t tell them. shh. back now at 8:09. with the state of tiger woods marriage, reports have surfaced a divorce settlement is in the works between woods and his wife elin nordegren. peter alexander is joining us now with the latest. peter, good morning. reporter: ann, good morning to you. tiger woods is preparing to pay his wife elin anywhere from $100 million to $750 million. now neither side has said a single word about possible agreement but that is keeping the story and gigantic price tag from making stories around the world. if the golf course is tiger woods sanctuary, these days he hasn t had a prayer. tiger is not making a thing. reporter: the world s top-ranked golfer this past weekend, tiger posted one of his worst finishes, 46th place, since his explosive scandal broke last november. there are still distractions. it is what it is. reporter: in fact, what it is could be a jaw dropping divorce deal with a possible payout to estranged wife elin nordegren in the nine figures. tmz reports tiger will pay $100 million. peop people magazine says that number could soar to $700 million. despite some who argue tyiiger isn t even worth that much. the primary sticking point, elin, who hasn t spoken publicly since the scandal, would reportedly have to stay silent. no interviews, no tv appearances, no tell-all books. hush money is the way to shut up a spouse, usually a wife. it never really works 100% because what happens is she tells a neighbor who tells whatever, so it really doesn t work. reporter: with tiger himself claiming the couple was working things out, no one may never know what put elin over the edge. was it the public claims from porn stars, the reported affair with hostess rachel uchitel? the stint in sex rehab? or the entire tabloid parade? reportedly still unresolved, who would get the couple s children. 3-year-old sam and 1-year-old charlie. people says elin wants full custody and she wants to make sure tiger doesn t have female friends around during visitation with the kids. and what if elin, now 30, wants to move back to her native sweden? the former nanny bought an exclusive $2 million waterfront estate near stock holm seen under going renovations in recent months. both on and off the course, the game s greatest golfer is now learning some lessons of his own. i certainly have made my mistakes, no doubt about that. and i take full ownership of them. i think that s what a lot of kids can learn from that is you re not always going to go through life perfect. no one does. reporter: if they are getting divorced, another challenge would be splitting up their multiple homes, including the homes in florida, where even as we speak, ann, tiger is building a 9,000-square-foot $80 million estate. no matter how much he winds up paying, if he winds up paying, no one is afraid he is going to go homeless here. peter alexander this morning, thanks so much. dan abrams is the chief legal analyst and editor in chief of hollywoodlife.com, good morning to both of you. no matter how much the final settlement is, dan, let s start with you. you think elin is holding all the cards here. that s right. this is effectively a new contract, right. forget about everything that s happened up to this point. in effect, what they re doing now is they re saying, okay, in exchange for x i m going to give you y. and the reason she s holding all the cards is because even if they have, let s say, a prenuptial agreement, she could say, you want to enforce the prenuptial agreement, great. then you know what i m going to do? i m going to write a book. i m going to talk about this publicly. so they re starting anew and she has that power to say, you want me to keep quiet, you want me to keep this to myself, i m going to need x, y, and z not just on dollars but custody as well. it was smart of her because this is her biggest bargaining chip if it is $100 million and not the $700 million. that s still ten times the prenup agreement? that s right. when she signed and got married, signed a prenup, she was only going to get $10 million. and, in fact, if tiger wanted, he really could stick with with that agreement. he could say, i don t care. i ve already had enough bad press. you couldn t trash my reputation any further if you tried. so, yes, i agree she has bargaining chips because he probably doesn t want his wife out there speaking. on the other hand, he didn t have to go above the $10 million. whatever the final amount is, could it actually be something that will grow because tiger is probably going to make a lot more money or is this a one-time deal? they ll probably make a deal that will cap it. why? from her point of view if she has all the cards why would she cap it? they re only going to agree to limited she could ask for all his money and he would say no. fine. go do what you want. there has to be something reasonable here and generally the way these sorts of agreements work is they try to cap it. they say, okay, this is how much you are entitled to period. now here s our deal with regard to the children, et cetera, and that s going to be, i think, the big sticking point. you talk about the idea of her moving to sweden. in most cases where there s visitation, the notion that a parent would be able to take children out of the country well, she wants to go to her home country, be around her family. she s allowed to visit. can she actually take her children? one of the things they could do is reach an agreement that says, look, she s got physical custody. she can take the children out. she can certainly visit her home country, but i m talking about literally the possibility of being able to move the children there, we don t know if that s what she wants to do, but that could be part of the agreement. but i don t think she would get anywhere with that. judges in america frown on fathers being separated from their children and you have to get permission even for her to take the children to sweden for a visit. tiger would have to agree to that. she couldn t just do that. and that s my point. he may end up agreeing to that as part of the totality of this agreement. he may say even when it comes to the children, i m going to let you make that sort of call, which would be a huge concession as bonnie points out, on his part to be able to say you can go ahead and do that. i don t know why he would do that. again, it s the same thing about her holding all the cards. dan abrams, bonnie, thank you for joining us this morning. this is not obviously the last we ve heard. and coming up next, the right way to put out dangerous kitchen fires. a live demonstration this morning. a car that keeps going, when others might quit. a car that stands strong. when you need it most. and expects to handle the unexpected. at chevrolet, we created a team of red x engineers who are obsessed with quality. red x torture tests every car down to the smallest detail. because everyone deserves excellence. the tree house i built with my dad. it makes sense to make sure you cook safely and take care of your appliances correctly. in just minutes a small kitchen fire can turn into a deadly inferno. but according to the national fire protection association, most kitchen fires can be prevented or the damage minimized. we visited the set of america s test kitchen to better understand the nature of kitchen fires and how quickly they can be contained. jack, how do most kitchen fires start? pot holders and dish towels are the number one source. paper towels like this, make sure they re not too close to the burners. when it comes to grease fires, water is your worst enemy. the worst thing you can do. you re going to spread the fire and get grease all over the place. if you don t have a fire extingui extinguisher, use the lid. how do you avoid a grease fire? jack says to pat down the poultry. there isn t oil going all over the place and there s been oil going for a long time. watch what happens when you use a wet piece of chicken. it s all over. it s all over the place. your oil gets outside of the pan. you can really get yourself into some trouble. and when it comes to deep frying. people get in a lot of trouble using too small a pot. you don t have enough head room, it can bubble up out of the pot and on your stove and you have a huge fire. add a little bit at a time. jack says as a rule, the pot should never be more than one-third full of oil. deep frying can be safe if you do the right thing. but kitchen equipment can catch fire, too. with the help of the greenwich fire department, we found out how to prevent them. if you have something inside the oven? if you have something inside the oven on fire, keep the oven door closed. it deprives oxygen. if you re able to, shut it off. if you eliminate heat, 0 oxygen, you eliminate fire. if your toaster wave or microwave spark, pull the plug. microwaves heat through microwaves not through heat. if you unplug it, you ve deenergized it. close it out. it should go out on its own. sean mcdonald told us when in doubt call 911 instead of trying to be a hero. fire extinguishers can be a great help if you know how to use it. it s a two-handed operation. there should be a seal on the extinguisher and a pin. the idea of the pin is it can t be accidentally depressed. once this seal h been broken and the pin has been removed, you re going to come up to the fire, six to eight feet away, point this at the seat of the fire and use this motion holding this depressed all the way. okay, go for it. it s not that easy. but we want to reiterate, call 911. if you have a fire extinguisher, know where you keep it, keep it away from a heat source and remember where it is. you need to get to it. we re going to bring in ryan o o donnell, a former fire chief. he s going to show us how to use an extinguish er to put out a kitchen fire using this stove fire simulator. welcome to you. now there s an acronym you use, right? the word you want to remember is p.a.s.s., pull, aim, squeeze, and sweep. and that s pull the pin, aim the hose, squeeze the handle, and sweep back and forth at the base of the fire. so we have some simulated extinguishers here that use a laser to interact with our stove fire. so we have a fire in the oven, a fire on the stove top. so let s pull the pin. aim at the top burner there. looks like we have the steve top out here but we still have an oven fire. so that oven fire may keep reigniting plus our burner is still on. if you don t want to open the oven, that can spread the fire. you want to stay back, use your extinguisher. now that the stove top is out, turn the burner off, go ahead. turn that burn er off. the other way. and now extinguish the oven fire, turn the oven off. so it we push this but the on right here, that oven will turn off. we ll keep the fire contained inside the oven and eventually that will die down. we notice the trash basket right next to that. we can start up a trash can fire. on this we want to stay back. about six to eight feet back with a fire extinguisher but we want to go through the whole pull, aim, squeeze, sweep. aim just inside of the trash can. you don t want to go into the trash can? why is not. if you get too close, the reason you want to stay back is to let the extinguisher do the work. if you get too close, you can spread the contents out. stay back, get your extinguisher, let the extinguisher do the work. before you do now does that mean this thing isn t out the fact it s still smoking? typically trash cans are a class a so it may smolder. call the fire department. 911. 8:26 is your time, tuesday july 6th, 2010. i m eun yang. good news for folks in montgomery and prince georges county counties. water restrictions have been listed. the crews successfully repaired a failing portion of a massive 96-inch water main in potomac. they tested the watt, now flowing through the pipes and claims the quality is also up to par. the water restrictions had been in place since last thursday. we ll have weather and traffic when we come back. good morning, temperatures climbing into the 80s and we ll hit the 90s by noon. by midafternoon tit may reach 10 or higher, especially the city. more humidity tomorrow and a hot day near 100 degrees. then a break coming in thursday and friday and some welcomed rain as well possible both days. highs in the low 90s. over the weekend, maybe more showers saturday, drying out sunday, monday. tough times at this hour on kennel worth avenue northbound under benning road. the far left lane get business because of the water main break. jammed from pennsylvania avenue on up. that s a significant delay. uter loop of the american legion bridge had an accident. that s out of the roadway. headed towards tyson s corner, be forewarned, it s slow. ahead on news4 midday. the heat can create a number of skin problems. so we really hope to get the opportunity to come to new york city and get hitched. we have to go. thank you. we ll see you soon. time s up. 8:30 now on this tuesday morning, july 6th, 2010. the applications are rolling in for today s wedding. that couple you saw, megan and chuck from west virginia, would like nothing more than to be married right here. we d love to accommodate them. find out how you can enter, head to our website todayshow.com or facebook.c facebook.com/todayshow. just remember, we need your applications by friday. time is ticking here. i m meredith vieira alongside ann curry and lester holt. what can a parent do if they are cut off by their adult children? [ static ] we re back at 8:37. this morning on today s family adult parents and estranged children. all families have the occasional fight but what happens when you don t reconcile and your adult children cut you off completely? she is my only child and i always thought that we were very close. debbie raised her daughter as a single mom. she was an honor graduate from high school. she was the president of her class. she was popular. and she was by everyone s account so well adjusted. while in college debbie s daughter ended their relationship, cutting her off comple completely without explanation. i did think it would subside and she would mellow or at least miss me, occasions, holidays, birthdays occur. i thought surely she would respond. at first debbie tried to contact her daughter, phone calls, letters. she even tried to see her, but her daughter still refused to have any contact. for a person to just walk out of your life is devastating. debbie went back over events that happened with her daughter and questioned whether she d been a good mother. was i the overindulgent parent? was i the one that was too strict? and then you seesaw back and forth with all these theories about yourself. devastated over the loss of her relationship with her daughter, debbie even went into grief counseling. cutting you off, not inviting you to the wedding, not letting you see your grandchildren i have three that i would love to see and be part of their lives, but i couldn t pick them out of a lineup. after seven years of being estranged from her daughter, debbie would just like to have an opportunity to talk with her. i miss her terribly. i would say i love you and i always will. debbie kittner is with us along with a psychologist, the author of when parents hurt. good morning to you both. debbie, your story is so sad that your daughter seven years ago broke off a relationship with you and you ve tried to connect with her, you ve tried contacting her, going to her place of business and she s rejected you. where are you now emotionally after seven years? well, all that s true. all those attempts i made but i found out that there is a lot of moms just like me that have done these left on our own to figure out these things. we try the things that make common sense. was there a moment when you realized she s cutting me off permanently? i think i was already neck deep into the estrangement before i realized that it was just that, and i didn t even have the word i never equated that word to me and my daughter. but i think i was pretty deep into it before i realized this is total cutoff. i thought she would maybe cool off, mellow, like i said, and come back in some way or call, but nothing. and do you have a theory? growing up you said there were never issues. you were a single mom and things were fine. there weren t. i thought usually when you look for a red flag, you think, well, this is the problem. i need to work on it. i didn t get that with her. i m not saying she was perfect and neither was i, but i don t think that there was any big red flag. it was a normal loving relationship, mother and daughter. it was the best. it hit me like a freight train when it happened. doctor, i thought this was not very prevalent but the opposite is true. there are a lot of examples when you look at the celebrity world, angelina jolie, brooke shields, lindsey vonn, the skier. i think it s an epidemic, but it s a silent epidemic. people don t want to talk about it. people feel like if a child cuts them off they must have done something really, really terrible locked the kid in the closet. some sort of abuse or addiction. there is a certain percentage where that happens, but i m seeing a lot more of good, loving, dedicated parents getting estranged. that s why i m really proud of debbie having the courage to bring this to the front. why do you think it is happening? why do you think you re seeing more of this? one is certainly divorce. i d say 70% to 80% of the parents i work with have been through divorce. we have to pay attention to that. parenting has really undergone a radical transformation in the past century, particularly in the past four decades. we ve gone from children being seen and not heard to children really being the center of family life. we care very, very much about what children think and feel and so children now have a huge voice not only to judge us as parents but as people. so for a short period of time, the parents will have and respect to the parents job. and i know in your own life you and your daughter were estranged but you have come back together. that s true. is there something looking back, if i d only done this? oh, there are a lot of things. multiple things. after dr. josh s book didn t come out until way after i was into this estrangement, and i did walk around with this cloak of shame and guilt, embarrassment. no one likes to say my child isn t talking to me or that i don t get to see my grandchildren because so many people pull out their pictures and you re grandmother age, too, and you don t have any to pull out, it s devastating and touches you in ways you don t expects sometimes, when you re at a doctor s office or grocery store and you run into someone and you feel like ducking in the tomatoes. people that your child grew up with theirs. do you believe you will reconne reconnect? i have to believe so, yes. you can live with a broken heart and die with one but it s terrible to do both. what word of advice would you give to parents like debbie? the most important thing if your child has cut you off or threatens to cut you off is to understand what their families are. there s separate realities in every family. you can feel like you re doing a good job and missed something important. take responsibility. if you made mistakes, then apologize and make it a sincere, heartfelt apology. i think that s the most posh thing. debbie, really we appreciate you sharing your story and hope you reconcile with your daugh r daughter. thank you. up next on a much lighter note, the trick to grilling a perfect t-bone steak. navigating today s real estate market is complicated. you ve seen the signs. that s why having the right real estate agent is more important than ever. at remax.com, you can find experts in short sales or bank-owned properties or commercial real estate, agents who can help speed up the process, no matter how intricate. and that s good news, whether you re trying to sell or hoping to buy. because the only sign you really want to see is sold. nobody sells more real estate than re/max. visit remax.com today. the gas prices are going down, they go back up again. we know saving money is important. this summer, shop with your giant card and save on shell fuel. earn one point for every dollar you spend. every 100 points earned gets you another 10 cents off per gallon. the more you spend, the more you save. i m saving money at the store, i m saving money at the pump, and that works for me. more savings every time you shop, only with your giant card. announcer: today s kitchen is brought to you by benefiber. a better you from the inside out. that s the beauty of benefiber. this morning in today s kitchen back to basics. grilling up a sizzling summer steak. chef and cookbook author marcus is joining us this morning. he won the second season of bra bravo s top chef. he is the owner of a restaurant in chicago. good morning. thank you for having me. how are you? congratulations on your big win. thank you very much. you are here because it is time for us to cook up some steaks. go outside and grill. there s lots of stuff for you. today we re going to cook a t-bone steak. this is like the king of all kings. like a fred flintstone steak. look at this big bone. yep. that s what s going to make it moist and juicy. tips like that, we ll have tons of tips you can e-mail in. we have a barbecue help line. it s a hotline. and then you re basically going to help people cooking a steak and struggling, there s a hotline. we ll tell people how to get to that. today you have some herbs, i see thyme, rosemary. exactly. a little bit of olive oil. i have it in here. what do you have there? lemon zest and parsley. i m also going to add in a little bit of marjoram and olive oil and just mix that up. a bunch of herbs and olive oil in there. lemon juice. and now you re blending this all together. this takes a few minutes to put together but why are you making this? this will make it taste really, really good. when you grill it back away, everybody. here we go. it s not plugged in. there it goes. okay. you have to put some more olive oil in there. there it goes. anyway, it works and it gets down to this and what do you do with it? when i grill it, i m just going to keep bassi ibasting it. amazing flavor, lemon, garlic, the herbs. it smells amazing. this steak, about ten minutes on each side and then the key is you have to let it rest. you don t want to slice it up right away. then you get all the blood and the juice on the cutting board. i see. you want to keep them. at least ten minutes because of the bone. you want it nice, moist and juicy. really hot and then let it rest. what about this stuff, caramelized onions. i love onions, all types. me, too. i m going to add in mustard seed, coriander. we re going to put in some honey in there. we have some red onions and some garlic. now what s that? red wine. okay, baby. salt and vinegar. now you re talking. how long does this have to cook? this will simmer down, about 30 minutes or so. and it s a low heat. then you get this beautiful. look at that. put your fingers in there. my fingers? put your fingers in there. wow. i could eat that. it s beautiful. and you have this steak going down on the bone and carving it like that. now you re serving it. you let it rest. it s still pink inside. now you see this? this is pink inside but also the blood is not on the cutting board. right. and continue with that tradition. i ve got it. okay, okay. here we go. it s good, right? it s wonderful. thank you so much. by the way, will you come back soon? she s outstanding. she s surpassed everything that tivational speaker when she graduates, sharing her story of overcoming obstacles. for today, janet shamlian, nbc news, austin. and lizzie velasquez is here with us exclusively along with her parents rita and lupe. i have to ask you, rita, first you watched this with tears in your eyes. how was it possible that you raised this girl who says people stare at her all the time, how is it possible you raised a girl who would sit here on this couch in front of millions of people and let people look at her with this confidence? i don t know. i just treated her as a normal child. i didn t treat her any differently. she was just our daughter. we just raised her how we knew how to do it and that s what we did. lupe? all i can say, she was brought into this world with a purpose and we re all learning from her. and we get our strength from her. and so all we can do is support her and be there for her. in fact, lizzie, i understand that you convinced them to be here with you. you had to talk them into it. they support me in anything i do. so no matter what it is, if i wanted to jump off a building, i m sure they would probably try not to tell me not to do it but i m sure they ll support me. as long as i get my story out there, they support me 100%. get your story out there. this is the mission. yes, definitely. every single day my mission is to get my story out there. why? because people need to know that no matter what you look like or what you go through in your life, you don t need to be judged because of your outer appearance and you don t need to let that stop you. you don t need to let the negativity hold you back or keep you from living your life the way you want. and how did you do that, lizzie? how did you prevent the negativity from tearing you down? i mean, honestly, i m human. so, of course some of the negativity is going to hurt and it s going to upset me, but my dad always tells me i can only have my one sad cry and then you have to move on and look at the positive sides of things and i have to give all that credit to my parents and to my family because they raised me as if i was nothing different. so i have to when i have to learn from the outside world that, yes, you are different. my mindset is still you re normal. so i m kind of just like fight ing to prove i m normal even though i m small. so you re teaching other people essentially? yes. you have a feisty daughter. yes. what did you say to her? every day she would there were days she had bad days and she would complain about how she looked or how thin she was. i said, there s always others that are worse, that have more struggles than you do. just be grateful and thankful for what you have, your health, and that you are doing fine and we always were trying to be positive with her. we never told her anything different. we never treated her differently. it was always, you can do whatever you want to do, put your mind to it and that s it. just set goals. and she s met almost all her goals. she has accomplished just to get there. did eating 5,000 calories a day require to have you weigh 60 pounds? no, no, no. honestly, i would never actually look at a calorie in my life just because i ve never had to. why do you eat so much, do you think, compared to other people? i get hungry really quickly and i don t eat a lot of big meals. i eat a lot of small meals, so i get full kind of fast. so i just kind of snack throughout the day and i, of course, have my breakfast, lunch and dinner, but i don t have a required amount of food. has this always been the case when she was younger? yes. she could eat anything. that s what it is. she eats all day long, just small meals, snacking in between, but it s never like a full meal that she sits complete. it s small meals throughout the day and she does get hungry a lot. she always is snacking which is hard for us. it s hard to keep that kind of food in the house since she can eat whatever she wants. meantime now your daughter has written a book. yes. she has written a book to help other people understand more deeply. your daughter has written a book. when she was in middle school, she said i m going to grow up, be an inspirational people, i m going to write a book. i m not even going to dedicate the book to you. you re not believing in me. and here she is accomplish her mission and when i read the manuscript, i was crying, thinking back to when she was a baby, and i hadn t read it at all because it was a collaboration between mom and daughter and, you know, i wanted to wait for the finished product. and i just sat there laughing and crying. it was really emotional. i m just so proud of her, the strength she has and the courage and determination. thank you for joining us. thank you very much. rita and lupe, thank you for raising such an exceptional daughter. and the book is called lizzie beautiful. and if you want more information about it go to our website todayshow.com. and still to come here on today, what your teens can do this summer to help them get into the college of their choice. at cvs/pharmacy. i m taking the right steps to manage my diabetes and my budget. extracare advantage for diabetes is a new program that helps me save money and earn double bucks on over 100 items, so we can stay a step ahead of. all: our diabetes! join extracare advantage for diabetes today and receive a free gift when you enroll. only at cvs/pharmacy. takes care of 33 loads. tide stain release only handles 11. and clorox 2 gets rid of tough stains right before your eyes. clorox 2. find it next to the clorox bleach. are the things we make. this has always been a nation of builders, craftsmen. men and women for whom straight stitches and clean welds were matters of personal pride. they made the skyscrapers and the cotton gins. colt revolvers, jeep 4 x 4 s. these things make us who we are. as a people, we do well when we make good things and not so well when we don t. the good new is, this can be put right. we just have to do it. and so we did. this, our newest son, was imagined, drawn, carved, stamped, hewn and forged here in america. it is well made and it is designed to work. this was once a country where people made things, beautiful things, and so it is again. the new jeep grand cherokee. who are you?!? you do want to avoid that. i ll lay on the beach and relax but your head stays back at home checking in with the office. it s much better to take a vacation where you have lots of activities to do. at redbook we sent a writetory a farm that accepts guests and she and her family had the best time because they moved from one new experience to the next. her kids were gathering eggs and they were playing with baby lambs and they really managed to reconnect with nature and reconnect with each other. it was a wonderful break. gail, you make that same point about learning a new activity can can even help if you re a couple away. learning something new, first of all, when you have a new experience, it increases the dopamine level in your brain which is a hormone of pleasure. it feels good and you want to do it again. and so souping up that enriches you. enrichment isn t the same thing as being relaxed and destressed but it s a good substitute. for the person who can t necessarily just relax and be doing nothing, feeling enriched by some experience you have, you mentioned you were away on vacation and you really improved your french. you ve acquired something new. what does it say about us that we don t know how to vacation anymore? i think what it says is that we are almost addicted to stress and it takes a whole lot for us to really unplug and rejuvenate. one of the things that we suggest and ties back into what gail is saying about something new is to think about the adult camp scenario so you can go to a camp and learn how to sail, how to surf. incorporating physical exercise and that doesn t mean necessarily going to the gym. it can be a walk. physical exercise, even 30 minutes a day, takes down your anxiety level, boosts your mood, in fact in head-to-head studies of antidepressants and exercise with mild to moderate depression, they really worked equally well. you want to use that on vacation as well. it could be 30 minutes. walk around. with the kids it helps them work off the energy. you say learn to soothe. take a hot bath on vacation? there are the hot bath types and those of us who say what am i doing here? you have to be realistic about what your type is. but unplugging from all your gizmos and gadgets is one of the major things that we recommend. a lot of us as we re getting ready to go on vacation pack a bag full of electronics. pack a deck of cards instead. go old school. pack some board games. it s incredibly important in all aspects of vacation as well, whether we re talking about using visual imagery or breathing, having a box of tools you can use to cope with stress will help you on vacation or wherever you are. good stuff. thank you both very much. good advice. hopefully we can now put that advice to work in our lives. thank you. up next, helping your child stand out from the path to colle college. da, da, da-da-da, da, da-da-da, da, da-da [ female announcer ] there s a place called hidden valley where kids not only eat their vegetables, they can t get enough. hidden valley ranch. makes vegetables delectable. discover four more ways to make vegetables delectable with farmhouse originals from hidden valley. we re all striving for it. purina cat chow helps you nurture it in your cat with a full family of excellent nutrition and helpful resources. purina cat chow. share a better life. purina cat chow. why do women like you love activia light? well, i tell students that they should be getting involved in pursuing an interest or one activity for a long period of time over the summer. it doesn t mean they have to take the whole summer to do something. they can certainly take a few weeks off but longer programs are better than shorter programs. are we talking now about rising seniors here or anybody in high skochool? anybody in high school really. colleges are going to see everything from ninth grade on and they re looking more and more on how students are spending their time outside the classroom including summers. you are an advocate that they should become involved in academic programs or camps. there are so many programs out there for any interest and you want to pursue your own interests. and many of these programs, by the way, offer scholarships and financial aid. if you re interested in music, for example, there s a five-week summer performance program at berkeley college of music in boston. if you re interested in the sciences, there s a program at the university of pennsylvania. they host a summer science academy. so there s almost anything that you can find online. what about taking college level courses? are there more opportunities now for high school students to take those kinds of courses? absolutely. and parents can sign your children up for a local community college and you can take a class, a student can take a class in an area of interest or maybe something that isn t offered in their high school like business or marketing or something like that and they can get an idea what they might want to major in in college and many times they can often start working towards college credit by taking those classes. the folks who do the admissions are looking at the whole broad range of a child s experiences. a lot of schools now have studied abroad programs. what about before you go to college? does it help and what kind of opportunities are there? again, it depends on your interests but we tell students if if you can do a study abroad ogram, take a long er program, do a four-week-plus program so you re really getting immersed into another place, in another culture, and we have programs where they can study economics london, art history, archaeology in peru, there s so much out there. you want to get online and see what you can find. some may say that s well and good if you have a lot of money. if you have a limited income, can you still take advantage? many of the programs offer scholarships and financial aid and so we tell students to really look hard and certainly call and ask. it doesn t hurt to ask. what kind of summer work would enhance a resume for college? or internship? it really doesn t matter what you do as long as you re pursuing something you think you might be interested in. i mean, this could maybe confirm one of your career aspirations. you might discover a new interest but the idea you would be getting hands-on experience somewhere and possibly also a letter of recommendation by the end of your work experience. and of course if you could find those paid internships, they re always great because then you could earn money to college expenses and every student needs extra spending money too go see a concert or go out to dinner and do something with their friends. i remember with my boys applying for college and a big part of it was the community service things and getting involved. talk about some of those things that are really key. looking at how students are making an impact in their communities. so you definitely want to see how you can get involved and volunteer work is a great eidea. you don t just want to volunteer for the sake of volunteering. you want to find something that matches your interest. so let s say you are interested medicine. ybe you volunteer at a local hospital or a nursing home, and even i tell students a student might say, i m interested in the beach. okay. that s great. why don t you get involved in a beach environmental cleanup. yeah. and the last thing the college visit. families taking the time to advice the college campuses. what should you be look iing fo besides, gee, that s a cool dorm? if you have the opportunity to visit colleges this summer, i tell families if you re going u can even start looking and u, online, looking at professors, courses, start reading the campus newspapers and get a feel for what these places are really like. katherine cohen, thank you for sharing the advice. thanks for having me. up next, gourmet hot dogs. you bet i said gourmet hot dogs up next, gourmet hot dogs. you bet i said gourmet hot dogs you re s[ static ]ish. plug and play. now understanding my diabetes is that simple. this is inspired by the chicago steak house. so what we have here, we have a hot dog that i have pepper corn encrusted that s already done. angus beef hot dog? if you can believe it. it s really a nice, trendy meat you re seeing a lot. the angus meat hot dog. exactly. it will be a nice flavor. and you re caramelizing the onion, why? onions have a lot of sugar and so this is going to contain the flavor and make them really nice and sweet. some olive oil, yellow onions although feel free to use red onions, whatever you like, shallots if you like them. this is a little bit of sugar. just a tad. a teaspoon of sugar. this is just going to speed up the process. you don t have to use this. so if you don t want it. it will take about 45 minutes to an hour. really? yes, i know. and the big trick is not to move them around too much when they start to brown but enough so they don t burn. about 45 minutes with the onion. i take it this is for an adult dinner party. the kids, throw them on the grill. a little onion on there. bay ccon and bleu cheese. boom, it s done. i want to try that. next up we have now this is a pork dog and then this is the classic combination of pork and apples and sauerkraut. these are onions and garlic, sauerkraut. love that on a hot dog. just dump the ingredients in. there s really no rhyme or reason. gala apples will add a nice sweetness. this is a granny smith. a little bit of tartness. that s the brown sugar. and then a little bit of beef stock. okay. a little more complexity and then my favorite part, the wine. don t forget the wine. just kind of pour that in. let it all cook down. all right. put it in the oven, 350 for about 20 minutes and this is what it s going to be. hi. i ve never seen hot dog preparation involving this much. you have a chutney and turkey. what is chutney? like a relish. look at that. you can make it with tomato but i use mango and cook it down the same way. you cook it down the same way with the brown sugar. you can kind of dump everything in. i like to dissolve the sugar a little bit. this is with some onions. i am going to try that one. i have never seen anything like it in my life. 9:56 is your time. 91 degrees now. a hot day. tom will have the forecast after the news. good morning, i m eun yang. after five days the water restrictions in montgomery and prince georges counties have been lifted. wssc says the crews repaired a failing portion of a massive 96-inch water main in potomac. residents were asked to cut consumption by one-third while the main was being fixed. the restricts are off, but people might want to conserve water and pow. we could have some power issues this afternoon as it s a huge demand for air-conditioning, as temperatures already now are around 90 degrees. we do have an excessive heat advisories, all counties in orange. most of maryland, all of delaware, and that is for today and tomorrow. highs reach near 100 today and tomorrow. more humid on wednesday. stay humid on thursday and friday but should be cooler. we have a chance for much-needed rain, perhaps passing afternoon thunder showers on thursday. maybe morning or afternoon shower friday. how s the traffic? kobayashi. kobayashi. he won for years and all that, and he was banned from his contract from eating at this one. what contract? he had a contract that said if he ate at this one, he couldn t at another one. he s a professional eater. apparently they were chanting his name. he stormed on the stage and started trying to eat. anyway, he went to the big house, which is where you take peopl people. they should have tased him. they ended up feeding him peanut butter and jelly. i can t watch that contest without gagging. it s the nastiest video ever. just look at it for one second, and now look away. oh. it is so nauseating. this is the thing. they train for this, people. all year. look at him trying to get it down there. gag it down. they soak it in water. okay, okay. not as bad as that, but for the umptenth year in a roar was the watermelon eating contest in nantucket. guess who won? that s right, everybody, blue ribbon, cassidy. she was in the 17 and older. there was like a 60-year-old guy. she d never been so proud. she weighs like 100 pounds. her technique is to finish it first. i like frank was walking around with the blue ribbon. there s another little thing if i might be so bold. in this month s he wore it. in this magazine, seventeen magazine there s a pull-out thing for the jeans guide. the best jeans for teens. it pulls all the way out. i m sorry. the petite jeans. let s see. look. there s miss cassidy. this girl is getting to be huge. not huge. just having fun. they don t get paid for that. how cool is that? by the way, hoda does not get paid here either, you all, for doing the movie reviews. that s a summer internship. yes, it is. in the northeast today you should be very careful because the heat index is going to be 106. 106. 100 degrees, will feel like 106. they were saying the amount of water that you sweat out of your body is i think it s the equivalent of a liter during a hot day. speak to me in gallons. how much is a liter? i never went for that whole thing. don t like metrics. you re against it? i m too old to learn anything new. it s less than a gallon. less than a gallon. here s the thing. of all the days in the entire year that hoda and i have to go to summer camp today, we re going some place to shoot summer camp. oh, my gosh. we go to camp. we re going away and get in the kayaks and doing arts and the crafts, which i love. we re going to be what else are we doing? eating hot dogs. singing with the children. oh, god. you love it it. it s 100 degrees. 106. i can t wait to see what happens to your hair. so, anyway, this story the spy story. the russian spy story has been on the front page forever. only here in new york. do you think they care in oshkosh, wisconsin about this girl? i don t know. you hear everything about had this supposed spy. they talk about her sexual proclivities and they have pictures of her with everything blocked out. thank you, thank you. they talk about all that stuff, but they never tell us what are the secrets? it s all about her sex life, which we don t care about, but nobody can say what they were spying on, who they were spying on, and what they were what information they were passing on to boris in moscow. did you see in the paper, they had boris and natasha in the paper? they did a better job. maybe we ll find out one day. it sounds like she s in montt claire, new jersey. there s so much deviant stuff going on there. really bad. and then now it s prince william and harry, she was out to seduce them. aren t we all? yes. tiger s divorce is moving ahead and there s all kinds of conflicting reports. everything i read about me and my friends in the paper, the money thing they never get right one time, so i particularly don t believe. tmz reports that he s paying her $100 million, which she probably earned every penny of that. forbes says he s worth about $600 million, but people says she might get 700 million. how can you get 700 million if he s worth 600. some say if she gets the big amount that she makes an agreement not to talk. dan abrams said earlier because of the first amendment even if that s part of of the deal she can still do that. you want to tell your story or what often happens in situations like that, she doesn t talk directly to the press and she tells the friend or sister and that person is on tv. she doesn t seem like that. she seems like an extremely private, classy young woman. i have been surprised in the past. there s an interesting story about divorce. it says that divorce may be contagious. this is a harvard study, and university of california. it analyzed 5,000 people. if you have a friend whose going through divorce, the chances are 147% greater that you, too, will go through divorce because you see what happens in theirs and listen to their problems and say that s what my husband does. i have that issue, too. it turns out to be your issue as well. i wonder if the reverse is true as well. i stayed married in a first marriage for a long, long time because divorce was just not an option in our family. true. and then ultimately when somebody divorces you, you have no say about it. you ve been divorced, and nobody cares about the details. right, game over. i think it has a lot to do with the pressure you feel from people around you and what s considered the right thing to do. when you re around healthy people, you live a healthier life. when you re around people who lounge around and don t do anything, you end up kind of becoming their personality. what s that say about you and me? i don t know. we re going to take a shower together and reach places that have never been reached before. this is the razor reach. if you can t get the back of your leg. if you ve ever been in the if you ve ever been in the shower get away from me and you can t reach the back of your leg behind, you just apparently take this thingy and you just do what you do on the back. see, that only makes sense with someone like you that has longer legs on anything. i only need this. my legs are so short. what about you, miss sarah. i don t think i could control that. with your summer outing today, sasha wants to know, did you go to summer camp when you were younger? i did. i never went to sleep-away camp. i just went to day camp. i went to sleep-away and i love it. the guitar, the whole thing, the canoes, i was in. i was a counselor. i liked it. you told me a couple of your counselor stories. careful. all righty, then. my gosh, hoda. did you put that in the book coming out in october. kendra is getting very real about her past. you ll see the details right after this.
