cosby for taking a shot at his run for the white house. the only thing he s running is his mouth. today, tuesday, april 12, is his mouth. today, tuesday, april 12, 2011. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and welcome to today on this tuesday morning. i m meredith vieira. i m carl quintanilla in for matt who s on assignment. flying s been scary the past few weeks. we have had controllers asleep in the tower, a hole in the roof of a passenger jet and the scary mishap at jfk. the jet was taxiing for take off when it clipped the smaller plane, spinning it around. it is amazing no one was hurt. more details in a live report ahead. also, the fallout to one of the most shocking american idol eliminations in years. pia toscano was considered a front-runner until last week s surprising vote. take a look. the person who leaves us tonight after the nationwide vote is pia. she was shocked. the audience booed. the judges couldn t believe it. she s here to talk about what s next for her. she s smiling, so probably good things. plus, imagine owning the home of the woman who could be the future queen of england. the modest house where kate middleton grew up. we begin with the accident at jfk international. tom costello covers aviation for us. he s in washington with the latest. tom, good morning to you. reporter: hi, meredith. one of the new york papers is calling this david versus goliath and goliath won. this happened at 8:00 at jfk last night. a giant air bus a-380 flown by air france clipped and we mean really clipped a smaller delta regional jet that had just landed from boston. the a-380 s wingspans almost 362 feet. the impact literally spun the smaller regional jet around. no one injured, but it was a dramatic impact. air france flight 7 was preparinging for departure when it clipped flight 6282 right at its vertical stabilizer. the pilot of the smaller jet radioed the tower that they had been hit and he asked for fire rescue equipment. tower, comair 563, send the trucks. they just hit us at mike. attention all emergency equipment, respond call 3-2 at alpha and mike. roll the emergency trucks at mike. we have been hit by air france. super a380. i understand. he believes he hit the regional jet and i understand they are evacuating the regional jet. they talk about mike. that s a taxi way. 480 passengers and crew were on board the air france flight. 60 on board the comair flight. passengers on both planes were deplaned and those bound for paris weren t allowed to depart. what a jolt. i know you have been on an a-380 before. is it possible the passengers on the jet may not have felt the collision? entirely possible. one passenger is quote as saying they felt a little bump. they weren t sure what happened. look at the size of that thing. it seats 555 passengers if it is completely full. you know, no u.s. airline flies the airbus a-380 now. 63 are in service worldwide. it s a giant of the skies. the question all along has been is there enough room on airports around the world. clearly last night it got tight. fortunately no one was hurt. tom costello, thank you very much. all right. want to get to this morning s top stories. tamron is in for ann at the news desk. good morning, everyone. japan has upgraded the severity of the nuclear crisis to the highest level equal to the 1980 chernobyl disaster. john yang has the latest from tokyo. good morning. reporter: good morning. officials say this change doesn t mean things have gotten worse at the fukushima plant. it just means they have a better sense of how much radiation has been released and is being released. experts say while this puts it in the same category as chernobyl, there are important differences. for instance, the amount of radiation released in fukushima so far is about 10% of the radiation released at chernobyl. on the other hand, they say chernobyl was a one-time massive explosion. the fukushima plant has been leaking now for about a month and there is no end in sight. officials acknowledge that if the leak continues unchecked, the amount of radiation could exceed the amount of radiation at chernobyl. tamron? all right, john yang live for us in tokyo. thank you. libyan rebels are reject a cease-fire proposal backed by moammar gadhafi and the african union. stephanie gosk has the latest. good morning. reporter: good morning. the african delegation was given a warm reception in tripoli but they did not get a warm welcome in benghazi. the proposal they put forward did not include gadhafi s immediate te par temperature so rebel leaders said it was a nonstarter. they rejected it within hours and the delegation left in a hurry. they were jeered by a crowd outside the hotel as they were leaving. the negotiations never really got off the ground. in another development the white house is getting involved in the case of missing journalists. four journalists disappeared a week ago today including two americans. jay carney has asked the libyan government to set them free. among them, clare gillis, an american woman who writes for the atlantic. editors at the magazine say they believe the libyan government detained the group. no one has had direct contact with them. tamron? stephanie, thank you. the president elect of ivory coast is hailing a new era of hope after a stand-off as the president refused to give up power despite losing the vote. he was captured monday from his bunker in the presidential residence. a man suspected in last week s california synagogue bombing has been arrested. ron hirsch was arrested outside cleveland. the blast sent a 300-pound pipe hurtling through the roof of the synagogue s neighbor. no one was hurt in that explosion. a claustrophobe s worst nightmare came true for new yorkers including a girl with asthma who were trapped in a stalled elevator. a tourist filmed the ordeal in the stifling elevator. after an hour, firefighters came to the rescue amid cheers and sighs of relief. okay, that s an interesting word to use there. 7:08. it is one of those what wouldle you do moments. gives you chills thinking about it. they got out safely. i m so taking the stairs today. we re on the ground floor actually. that helps. i was stuck on an escalator once for a week. horrible. i couldn t get down. a week. couldn t get down. let s see what is going on as far as your flood concern. we have flood threats in new england with melting snow and rain. low pressure will bring a lot of rain in the mid-atlantic states. could be severe weather as well. anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of rain from new york city to parts of long island. around here, we will get quarter to half inch of rain, and we have light rain showers moving into the area this morning, the temperatures will fall off and we could have an embedded thunderstorm later this afternoon that might bring high winds to the area. from the low to mid-60s this afternoon, and 56 by 5:00. tomorrow, still lingering rain showers, especially the first half of the day. and that s your latest weather. meredith? al, thank you. the hunt for a serial killer in new york led to a grim new discovery. two more sets of bones possibly linked to the case. ron allen has the latest. good morning to you. reporter: good morning, meredith. this case continues to take many bizarre twists and turns. the latest police search started as a routine investigation. they didn t expect to find much. very quickly they discovered two more sets of remains believed to be human, bringing the possible number of victims in the case to ten so far. an eerie thick fog added to the suspense as nearly 100 officers combed through brush trying to solve a mystery growing more gruesome each day. in hours a cadaver dog found what authorities called several bones. later, not far away, another grim discovery a skull. it s all been startling. all of it has been. i don t have a reaction to you because it s amazing that we are finding these things. reporter: authorities first started finding bodies in december, dumped just off the popular summer beach roads, desolate this time of year. they were searching for 24-year-old shannon gilbert, last seen fleeing a man s house saying someone was trying to kill her. four bodies at first, all believed to be prostitutes who advertised on craigslist. then four more bodies were found in recent weekses just a few miles from the other. still unidentified. collectively we want to bring to justice this animal that has obviously taken the lives of a number of people. if all the deaths are linked, what kind of person is likely behind them? you re looking for somebody who is helonistic, probably thrill-seeking and sexual. reporter: are they likely to find more bodies? i think it s entirely possible that they will find more in that area. and the further out they go, the more human remains they may find. reporter: the search for clues has reached hundreds of miles away to atlantic city, new jersey, where four women who worked the streets were found dead in a ditch back in 2006. investigators in both states wondering if similar unsolved murders are connected. the latest we are hearing in new york is that it s very unlikely that police will conduct a search today. there is stormy weather in the forecast and that can make it difficult to operate in thick brush. with ten victims already, police say they have enough to work with for now. carl? ron allen, thanks. michelle segona is a crime reporter. good morning. good morning. i know you are working sources on this story. how soon will we know if the latest remains are human and if they belong to one person or two? well, the latest remains found yesterday, we should know pretty quickly if they are human remains or animal remains. yesterday there were a number of animal remains found, as you can imagine, when you search a 4.5-mile radius. basically shoulder to shoulder looking for evidence and information like that. now as far as the identities on the most recent bodies, the one found in march, the three found in april, if it mirrors anything that happened in december of the other four bodies found, the process should take a month. those bodies are at the new york city medical examiner s office. once the identities are figured out they will then be brought back to suffolk county. i want to ask about the bodies discovered in december. the women believed to be prostitutes advertising on craigslist. their bodies were found 500 feet apart, but the latest round are more scattered. does that suggest the killer or killers may have changed the routine or maybe that there are more than one killer? you know, anything is possible at this point. if you look at the four that were found in december, as you mentioned, 500 feet apart. then the discovery in march, that was about a mile east. then the other three were a little bit closer together. then the two discoveries found yesterday were actually a lot further away and in different areas. and they were pieces of possible human remains. what instantly connected in my brain back in december was the atlantic city case. i was on the ground there, i was on the streets with the prostitutes in the evenings, with many people trying to figure out who the killer could have been there. those bodies were placed 60 yards away from the next, face down in a ditch behind the golden key motel. their heads were all facing east. none had their shoes or socks on but they were clothed. the information i have from the bodies found in december is that their clothing may have been removed. there s been speculation that the suspect might have a connection to law enforcement making these brief telephone calls from crowded locations difficult to trace. do you think that s a possibili possibility? you know, at this point, you don t have to the old days of you have to keep the cell phone call under three minutes or fwra investigators will track you, it s a long time ago. pick up a phone now and investigators can track you. doesn t matter if it s a throw away phone, your regular verizon or at&t cell phone. what happens is, especially on the throw away phones there is subscriber information, other information which leads back to a carrier. if that s connecting with someone else they can track some information. if that killer is responsible, especially for the first four bodies, the last four and the two bones we don t know the identifies they can figure out some information quickly. i m sure they have it. such a chilling case. we don t know if we are near the end yet. michelle, thanks. have a good day, carl. 7:15 now. here s meredith. now to the uprisings in the middle east. the reeblg has been on edge as violence and provetests spread across the world. tom brokaw just got back from a trip to the region including saudi arabia where he spoke with the foreign minister. good morning to you. good morning. they are all talking about what s going on around them and everyone agrees that the middle east will never be the same. this is historic change taking place. everyone agrees they don t know exactly how it turns out. saudi arabia is the big question mark. it s the richest, most powerful nation with oil reserves. they have not had anything to say until i talked to the foreign minister about the role of the united states in that part of the world and whether saudi arabia can change. here s what he had to say. we have to be very careful. you can t experiment with the lives of people. you can t force change on people that they don t want. change must come to this area, but change must be from this area. it cannot be imposed from outside. he said he s not going to change in saudi arabia to suit the united states. it was a big message sent back here. on the other hand, i talked with younger saudis and they think there ought to be more people who are now part of the ruling family. the king who is 87 years old has spread around $135 billion in the last ten days or so. i think they will stay stable for ale while. i know saudi arabia is upset with the way the obama administration handled the situation in egypt attempting to push out mubarak. in fact, they were offended. why? in part because they see themselves as the kind of saudi equivalent to mubarak and they don t know what happens to them next. they said, let the people push mubarak out. don t get involved in doing this. they also said, we are going to make saudi policy to suit saudi arabia, not to suit the united states. a big message. the national security adviser from the white house is there today talking about it. these are big stakes. i want to talk about the situation at home. on wednesday the president is expected to make a big speech announcing plans to reduce our debt including cuts in defense, medicare and medicaid. republicans have accused him of waiting too long to jump on the bandwagon. is that a fair criticism? i don t think so. i think what we are seeing, meredith, is the battlefield being prepared for 2012 with paul ryan and the budget, what happened over the weekend with the compromise worked out. both sides now are getting ready for the election year which is coming up quickly and barring any unforeseen events, i think next year will be a lot about the role of the federal government, about government expenditures and about how we pay down the debt we have and what we expect from our government in terms of medicare, health care, and social security? he s putting down his marker. the republicans put down theirs. we ll hear more. the republicans are calling for the privatization of medicare. are they overstepping here? hard to say. it s long overdue, but we are going to have a real debate about medicare, about how it has to be reformed. you can t get to where we need to get to just by cutting alone. there have to be profound changes in social security, medicare, health care delivery systems and also in the military budget. the president will put that on the table in a way that the republicans have not yet stepped forward in the same fashion. paul ryan, to his credit, is saying everything is up for grabs here. tom brokaw, thank you very much. great to be here. here s carl. gas prices are on the move again this morning, not in your favor. nbc s miguel almaguer is in san francisco, the city paying the most for a gallon of gas. good morning. reporter: good morning. $4.39 a gallon is what you will dish out at this shell station for regular gasoline. it s well above the national average but it is the new norm here. san francisco, california, home to the nation s highest gas prices where sticker shock i don t want to know how much it is now. reporter: has many shell shocked. here the average price for a gallon of gas is $4.13, if you can find it. americans across the country are being squeezed at the pump. the new national average is $3.77 a gallon, 22 cents more than a month ago when the average was $3.55. a year ago $2.86. the oil industry says taxes, seasonal blends and refinery problems have driven up prices. so has unrest in the middle east. gasoline and oil supplies are plentiful within the united states, however you look at it from a global perspective, you have investors looking at civil unrest in the middle east. reporter: as gas prices have shot up, commuters have started driving less. for the fifth straight week, gas sales are down. enough was enough about a week ago. this is getting ridiculous. reporter: down the road with the national average expected to hit $4 a gallon, many are rethinking driving. i can stand to lose a few pounds. maybe i could walk more. reporter: the pinch at the pump, painful at this senior resource center outside denver. free rides for the elderly so they can see a doctor or get food could be in jeopardy. the gas budget here is running on empty. there is a limit to what we can do and as a last resort, it would be a matter of scaling back. reporter: americans scaling back as gas prices continue to climb. the cheapest gas in the country, tucson, arizona, at $3.41 a gallon. that would be a bargain here and just about anywhere else. carl? she ll tell us in a life interview. and tomorrow on today, a woman who used to be a familiar face here will stop by to tell us about her new book and we ll see what she has to share about plans for the future. let s begin with new developments in the lacrosse murder on the campus of the university of virginia. prosecutors revealed never before heard details about the death of athlete yeardley love. jeff rossen has the latest from charlesville, virginia. reporter: good morning. this is the first time prosecutors laid out the case in court. we learned a lot about it. it happened nearly a year ago. details now pouring out from police and prosecutors trying the case. court went through 10:00 p.m. last night. they called witness after witness, 21 in all. it was so emotional at times, yeardley love s family had to get up and leave the courtroom. this morning an inside look at the crime from the students who were there. yeardley love s friends came to this small courthouse monday ready to tell young. this promising young athlete beaten and killed inside her apartment. charged in the killing, love s off and on boyfriend george huguely, a lacrosse player in the school. in this newly released mug shot huguely now has a buzz cut, a far cry from his look the day he was arrested. the preppy-looking college student plucked from campus. his own roommate testified huguely was binge drinking the morning of the murder, drunk by 10:00 a.m. that night he confessed, police said, admitting he kicked his right foot through the door that leads to love s bedroom. they got into a fight. he shook love and her head repeatedly hit the wall, leaving her to die, police say, face down on her pillow in a pool of blood. huguely s lawyers defended him. george huguely only learned that yeardley love had died when he was told that by a detective. he did not believe that such a terrible thing could have happened. reporter: in fact, as police questioned huguely he kept asking, how is she? the detective finally told him. you killed her, george. you killed her. according to police testimony monday, huguely responded, i never did anything that could do that to her. i swear to god. i refuse to believe she s dead. huguely, his lawyers say, never intended to kill love. from the beginning we have said this case is a tragedy but not about an intentional criminal act. reporter: friends say love and huguely had a rocky romantic relationship that sometimes led to physical violence. weeks before the murder it was revealed in court huguely sent love a handwritten letter saying, you are my very best friend. but then they fought again about another girl huguely was seeing. in the end it was love s roommate who found her motionless in bed. i shook her shoulders, kneeling on the bed trying to wake her. at the point where one of the witnesses is talking about discovering her body in the apartment, mrs. love walked out. you could tell that she really didn t want to be there to hear that. reporter: yeardley love s family still understandably too upset to speak. they have released a statement to nbc news telling us, yeardley s conal smile, kind spirit and gentle touch have left this world but we know heaven now has an angel like no other. there are discussions about a plea, but nothing so far. jeff, thank you very much. joe tacapina is a criminal defense attorney and joins us this morning. good morning, carl. huguely s lawyers say it is a tragedy, not an intentional event. there are reports of the potential plea deal. would you try to work out a plea in this case? facts are stubborn things, carl. in this case it s pretty overwhelming, some of the evidence regarding busting down the door, the confession. it s an admission. clearly what they are trying to do is reduce it from first-degree to manslaughter, to unintentional. they chose the words carefully. this is a tragedy, not an intentional criminal act. they are not saying it wasn t a crime. just not intentional. that s looking at a manslaughter defense. you think that s a potential avenue that i think that s pretty much the only avenue they can go down. according to the roommate he was binge drinking on the night of the murder. how does a defense attorney work with that when he s told the police so much already? you re stuck with the facts. what you have to do is show he wasn t in his right state of mind. he was clearly intoxicated. emotions from the relationship. a crime of passion, so to speak. his head becomes overwhelmed with that sort of thought. you show that this was not who he normally was. it was a momentary lapse. talking about the temper, friends talked about it. it s obvious with the kicking in of the wall. how much of that is admissible in court and how much of it hurts him with the jury? it will be admissible. it shows the nature of the relationship. it puts context to it. it is devastating for the defense here. it s not like which was a choir boy who hadn t had issues with violence and aggression. here is someone they will say was systematic in his treatment of this girl. it fit it is pattern. a dozen witnesses, almost nine hours in the preliminary hearing. is that unusual? not when talking about a high profile case with the stakes so high. the prosecutors here didn t want to leave one stone unturned or questions in the air. the judge obviously found that there was plenty of evidence to go forward to the grand jury. we have had stories of the family in the courtroom. how much does that affect the jury in watching them leave the courtroom in the parts of the testimony they can t bear to listen to. we are all human beings. just because they are jurors, they don t check common sense at the door. they will feel it, see it. emotion will be a huge part of the case. the evidence and facts will dictate what happens here. but emotion will definitely play a hand in the outcome here. how do you think it will turn out? there will be a conviction, without question. prosecutors are going for first-degree murder and they have the evidence. the destruction of the computer, attempted. the breaking down of the door. it shows not an accident but someone who knew he committed a crime and tried to cover it up. tough case for the defense. and tough to listen to. tough to listen to. thank you very much. we have some friends from okinawa, japan. what is the name of your school? you know, i had a feeling the night before. it was just a feeling in my stomach. i said, i think i m going to be in the bottom three tomorrow. they said, why would you say that? i said, i have that feeling. so it didn t come as a shock to me when i was in the bottom three, but you never expect to get voted off so early. when you heard your name? it was hard. it was a tough night. after your elimination, steven tyler spoke out and trying to figure out why you didn t get the votes he said guys aren t voting and girls are jealous. do you agree with him? you know, you don t know. there are a lot of female fans voting for the boys, but you don t know. you have to go out every week, give 110% and be happy with your performance. that s all you can do. when did you realize getting voted off wasn t going to be the end of the road for you? that night, everything was hitting me. all i kept thinking of was my journey was over on the show. i never imagined i would get the support i have been getting from people i have looked up to my whole life. we re hearing about a record deal. can you confirm that? i have been so busy we haven t talked about anything yet. we re focused on the tour now and whatever opportunities come my way, i ll take. will.i.am said, i have been told no a lot and i have learned over time that doesn t mean it s the end. what has this taught you? i tried to spin it in a positive way that this was god s plan. maybe it s a blessing in disguise. it s opened so many doors for me. i have no regrets whatsoever. they are talking about changing the rules in the future so america votes on the bottom three but the judges decide who s going to leave the show. do you think that would be better? that probably would have saved you for sure? it may have. i can t say. the voting is you know, it s hard to say really. i think the judges should have a say. i think they should. we were talking during the break about what it takes to sing your good-bye song after knowing you have been eliminated. i imagine you feel you can handle anything, any venue, any crowd, any situation. i would have to say that was the toughest moment for me. that was the hardest thing i have done. i was trying to breathe the whole time, get through the song and i really couldn t. i was too emotional. you said your family is there as well. did you feel you had let them down? not that i let them down, but the last time they were out was my top 12 female performance, the girls performance. they kept giving the tickets to my family because i have a huge family. so i said, guys, please come out. that was the night they came out and saw me eliminated. it must be a compliment when tom hanks tweets about you. and others. jessica alba. i m done for the season because it was an outrage. that s funny. jennifer hudson as well. i appreciate the support so much. what has the experience meant to you? no. reporter: for years, female bosses have been portrayed as overbearing. i need you this weekend to review files and the manuscript. this weekend? do you have a problem with that? reporter: back stabbing. i need 10 or 15 skirts from calvin klein. what kind of skirt please bore someone else with your questions. reporter: as queen bees. queen bee syndrome is a senior female who s worked her way up. once she gets positioned she doesn t play very nicely in the sand box. reporter: a new study suggests women who break through the glass ceiling are more likely to help male workers rather than female workers. according to the findings, men exceeded women in receiving job-related support from female supervisors and were more optimistic about promotion chances as a result. reporter: lara dillion isn t surprised. she started her career working under a woman and said she s experienced queen bee syndrome firsthand. some of the challenges i encountered with female bosses is this lack of trust or a competitiveness. reporter: the numbers suggest many americans have a negative perception of female bosses. according to a gallup survey people say if they got a new job, twice as many would rather work for a man than a woman. ella bell is a professor at dartmouth who s written about the perceived differences. particularly a male-dominated culture, become more hyper competitive. reporter: bell says it s everyone s responsibility to improve office dynamics. it s not about fixing women. it s about making organizations more flexible and more tolerant. reporter: a lesson lara has also learned. you take the time to mentor and develop a person and work with their strengthses can give you such a high return versus being competitive, making them feel bad. reporter: women redefining leadership as they move up in an increasingly complex corporate ladder. marcie alvaher is a career expert and robi ludwig is a frequent contributor. i think there is truth to it when you look at the studies. many studies indicate both men and women prefer to work for men. but there are reasons for that. we were talking about it that for a lot of women in order to get to the top, they had to act like men. they had to be alpha women. in some cases, and i have had patients like this, they modeled themselves after men and it didn t look right on a woman. we expect different things from female bosses. what do we expect from female bosses that we don t from men? i think rather than labeling something for the few women who have made it to the top i mean, there are plenty of male bosses and we don t have a king snake syndrome. like professor bell we should talk about grooming women for the top and how both men and women can be better mentors. you say the environment in the work force create it is situation. we need to work on changing the environment, yes. the original thought was when social sciences were looking at this phenomenon in the work place there was a thinking if we had more women in the work place women would nurture other women. they would be better bosses because they could delegate more, mentor. this study suggests it isn t happening. when we found the opposite to be true it was shocking. we want women to be the good mother. when women or men were having a different experience it was doubly upsetting. these bosses have power over us. women are in a double bind. it s harder to succeed and when we do we have to attach a bad label to it. as women, we are not helping the situation by focusing on talking about a syndrome. when men succeed we don t talk about a syndrome. we talk about success. but there is a situation going on. what s causing it? there are reports that or studies that suggest women in positions of power sometimes suffer self-esteem issues and that triggers this. in part. i think there are a few things. number one, they are surviving. there are only a few women at the top. there aren t tons of availability like there are for men. so if a woman is going to help another woman get to the top, where is she going to be? also, if we look at it from a cultural perspective we tell women they have no value once they are not young and attractive anymore. it sets up this competitive type of component in the work place. if we had a lot of jobs for women and a lot of possibilities and told them as they age they are still valuable like men i think we would be seeing something different and having a different conversation. if you re a woman working under a female boss, how do you deal with this be? first i want to say if you are a man or a woman and you have a boss who s standing in your way, i want to give you the same advice. that s the important thing i want people to take away. figure out, can you work around this boss or is it time to move on? yes. it was frustrating. i definitely worked harder than that one pound but my body didn t respond to it. in a way, you re going home. your family owns a dairy queen? yes, we do. wow. how tough is that? i think senses of competition, trying to totally get over vanity. haven t gotten there. the whole idea of mixing men and work, hard to do. mixing men and work? you know, having relationships that are really important and also having to be on the set at 6:00 in the morning. i think i m over caring about whether things work or not. what i m mostly now involved with is a sense of expressive creativity and let the shchips fall where they may. you don t say you have gotten over sex. you say sex has gotten over you. well, after a while you realize the real importance of the relationship is not about that. it s a component, but i think the sexual tension sometimes interferes with honesty in the relationship. when i realized that, my relationships with men shifted. it s not over me or anything, but i m not as interested in it now as i was because i ve got it in, i hope, its proper perspective. you still obviously haven t gotten over your interest in past lives. this is something you obviously care deeply object. in the book and you talked to our producer that a lot of what you believe in is no different from the dalai lama s beliebeli. you have been criticized and been poked fun at. why do you think that is? i think i m wearing the wrong wardrobe. if i draped myself in something and looked like a wandering pauper it would be probably more believable. i remember a man in san francisco interviewing me years ago. he said, i can t believe that about you because you wear sequins. because you wear sequins? on stage i was wearing sequins and that nullified the credibility of what i was saying. but you know two-thirds of the world believe this is, but not the western left-brained mechanistic, show it to me, if i can thump on it i ll believe it. not here. yeah. i have traveled so much and i was in contact with so many different kinds of people. it makes a difference in your life when you understand the levels of karma that are at work. what you put out, you get back. maybe not in one lifetime but some day it will return. even einstein talked about that. all energy returns to its source. you have had so many wonderful people as part of your life, elizabeth taylor being one of them. you write that you are over funerals but you lost her just a month ago. what did her life and passing mean to you? she was my oldest friend. we met when i was 20, she was 22. we hung out together. i introduced her to todd. mike todd. because we were doing around the world in 80 days. i watched the negotiations for dinner that mike would make with elizabeth. all right, we ll have dinner. here s one diamond. no. it s going to cost two diamonds. they were a wonderful, funny couple. understood they were outrageous. she had a wonderful sense of humor and of course he was the master of barnum. the two of you had to deal with fame. obviously it came to you both. you write in the book that you were surprised by how much people nowadays obsess over fame. you say it s a drug of annihilation. i think it is. what do you mean? just to want to be famous? what do you do when everyone is really staring at you, literally, look at you interested in you and you don t feel up to par with what you give back? is that what happened to you, shirley? as a young woman did you want to be famous? you did not? no. i even now have bad dreams about people surrounding my car or running after me to get autographs. but, you know, they have really never done that. i have never been one that is kind of a chick of running away from it. probably because i m so open about everything there is nothing to find out. you know? that s for sure. it s already there. this thing about wanting to be famous just for the sake of it can be very dangerous. are there women you look at in the field in your profession now, young women coming up the ranks that you admire particularly actresses? exactly. the pasta s been just cooked and has water all over it. we ll get some of the water in there and you will cook them together. the sausage is now cooked. the asparagus are cooking. you just want to add a little bit of parsley to that and we have pecorino cheese. mm. i can go for it. that s the dish. pecorino cheese, okay. it s great. a little bit sharp, spicy. i m making the chicken apple sausage waldorf salad. we have the sausage there. you can do precooked as well. this is organic chicken, organic apple. the waldorf salad is a classic with celery, apple, walnuts, mayonnaise. lemon juice. dump this in? exactly right. there you go. i will help with that. it goes right in. beautiful. now you have a waldorf salad. yours goes with this chicken. how do you know when it s done? you know, this is already precooked. so all you have to really do is warm it. it s very tasty. it s got the flavor you would like in a sausage. you put it on top of the mixture? you have the sausage, very nice. a little bit of water in the pan to steam it through and that gets it nice and hot. we have vegetarian sausage tacos. this is vegetarian chorizo, the mexican-style sausage but it s made from a wheat product. it s organic, natural. it has lots of flavor. i take it out of the casing and break it up. warm it with ale little olive oil. and we have tacos. okay. soft corn tacos? beautiful. we have a nice cotija cheese, a hard mexican cheese you can grate. put that on there. we have tomatoes, scallions and we have fresh avocado. and you have a beautiful taco. just like that. it s tasty. that was really difficult to make. no! really, it s versatile and fast. whip it up with the kids. michael, i have see food sausage and asian broth. what s seafood sausage? this is fresh sausage made from shrimp, salmon, scallops. it s really nice. ooh! you can broil it, do what you like. we have shitake mushrooms, celery, onions and this is vegetable broth. this is a little soy. yum. to make it all really, really good, that s sake. oh! you can t go wrong with sake. do you like heat? i have a family history of dementia and alzheimer s disease that i m afraid could cause problems for me down the road. are there any ways to lessen my chances of acquiring this through changes in diet and/or exercise? definitely. there are three important things you can do. first, maintain an ideal weight. being over weight or specifically having a lot of extra fat in the belly area increases your risk for dementia. the second thing is exercise at least 30 minutes on most days of the week. exercise is going to increase the blood flow to your brain. it s going to help keep it healthy and young. believe it or not it also helps to prevent shrinkage that occurs in the brain in critical parts of the brain responsible for memory as we get older. the third thing is to fuel your body with true brain food. that s going to mean eat omega-3 fish like salmon twice a week at least and every day i want you to go out of your way to have two cups of deep colorful produce. think spinach, kale, berries, cherries, purple grapes. if you like caffeinated coffee and tea, you re in luck. those beverages actually help to protect our memory. those are great solutions. thank you very much. great advice for anyone. yeah. the next question comes from chris on the phone in richmond, virginia. i think you have the favorite question of the day, at least in my mind. caller: sounds like it. shoot your question at joy. she s ready. caller: hello, joy. the cookie guy! caller: what cookies are best for a healthy diet? i share your passion for cookies. the first thing i will tell you is if you have extra time, make them from scratch at home. then you can control the ingredients. you can use whole wheat flour, oats, dried fruit, nuts, seeds, sem sweet dark chocolate chips. but if you want to buy a commercial cookie, there are a few brands that offer up nutrition along with sugar. first, the kashi brand and bare naked. they have a good line of cookies with nutrition qualities. also back to nature granola cookies are made with whole oats. that said, to me, cookies are known as treats versus health food. go for whatever cookies you want and minimize the portion. keep each splurge around 200 calories or less and it s all good. go, cookies! sounds good. i love that they have the cookies now with the 100 calorie snack pack. they re so good. portion is key when it comes to cookies. we love cookies. finally a viewer e-mail from angela in new york. she writes, how do you change your mindset to lose weight? i know how to eat and what to do, but i don t do it. what advice would you give to mentally motivate someone to lose weight? this is a really important question. unfortunately, there is no simple answer. this is what i do know from people i have worked with that have had a lot of success. you need to do some serious soul searching and find a significant and enduring source of personal motivation. tamron, that means different things to different people. the bottom line is it needs to come from you. maybe to better control health conditions. maybe to be around for your kids or grandkids. maybe to feel more comfortable in your own skin and boost your energy level. then you have to remind yourself every single day what your reasoning is for losing weight. strengthen that resolve with positive self-talk, inspirational quotes on post-its at home and in the office. i also think the big picture can be overwhelming. break your goal into bite-sized pieces and come up with weekly goals you can check off each week. maybe it s, i m not going to snack after dinner or i will walk 30 minutes each day. those small goals give you the chance to pat yourself on the back each week which keeps you motivated to reach the full goal. you don tle feel you are failing. lofty goals can be hard to reach. then you feel you have blown it and you go from the bottom up. small accomplishments add up. thank you very much, joy. still to come today, for sale, a four-bedroom, semi-detached victorian in a quaint village. oh, by the way, did i mention it s the childhood home of the woman who could be queen? i would say a great deal. i mean, she was a teacher at all times, even though she may have been employed in other ways. she spent a lot of time in micro finance, but she was always a teacher. as am i. she emphasized the themes that are present in the book namely that we are interconnected, that we therefore need to take care of one another, empathize with one another, find ways to serve and help one another. i think that those themes are very much evidenced in this presidency and in all of my brother s efforts as well. hands-on mom. you say she was a great storyteller. if you had to pick one important lesson she would impart to you, what would it be? the kindness that s of such value and is often underrated. basic human kindness. she was formidable in some ways. when it came to work she fought rather fearlessly for those about whom she cared. but she was also very tender and very sweet. there was a softness about her. i think that she made everyone feel like it was okay to be complex. do you see her influence in the president s policies at this point? most assuredly. there is a balance between negotiation and action and in everything that he does to reach out in spite of enormous challenges to keep working with people across the aisle. i think i see her every day. in ladder to the moon , there is a message of hope in there. mm-hmm. and looking forward and also looking back. when you look back on the president s campaign of hope do you see is it still that same message or has it had to change, do you think? no, i think that the message is absolutely the same. the president is still hopeful. i certainly am. there are wonderful, powerful things happening in every corner of this country. we have managed to make tremendous progress in so many ways. and i think that hopefulness includes a touch of prague ma timpl, hard work and service. in the book it s really about my daughter and our children everywhere remembering that they are strong and that they can help and beginning to sort of act in finding a language for service, even at a young age. you still live in hawaii. i do. i know that the president maintains close ties to hawaii. mm-hmm. how difficult is it hearing people like donald trump saying they don t believe the president was born in hawaii, that there is an issue there? what goes through your mind when you hear things like that? well, i think the facts are absolutely clear. i think not only do we have newspaper releases showing his birth, the birth certificate has been authenticated by a number of sources, including our republican former governor. so i really think there is no more to it than that. he was born in hawaii. that s a fact. you mentioned your daughter and this book is inspired by her. what inspires you today? well, myriad things. i think that certainly my work as an educator continues to remind me that we are able to shape our own stories and impact our own communities. the thing that is remarkable about our mother, i think, is she wasn t content to work with just what she was given or handed. she really built her own story, her own life, and used imagination. i love that idea of using imagination in as many ways as possible. we obviously haven t seen the end of the story for president obama. obviously he s announced he s running for 2012. you campaigned for him in 2008. i assume you will again. people like oprah haven t said they will endorse him again. if people are on the fence, what do you say to them about 2012? it s detoxifying, destressing, helps digest food and curbs your appetite. you think lose a lot of weight if you stick to hot water all day long. a lot of times you think you re hungry and you re really thirsty. if you drink water all day long cold water takes longer to digest. how much? i always have a mug of hot water with me constantly. it s simple. i have an electric kettle to keep it warm. you feel like it s a treat. i drive slower and i m calmer. it s changed me in a lot of ways. just hot water, simple. and limit the portions, pay attention to what we eat. i interviewed a yogi for the today show. he talked about ayurvedic medicine and say we all consume way too much food. he said eat only when you are hungry. when you eat, eat simple and clean. when you get a salad don t get a million things. it s hard to digest. no longer a healthy option with cheese and everything. and it s hard to digest. so he said, have carrots and hummus or blueberries. i keep almond clusters in my purse. i never get to the point where i m starving. what s your trick to staying organized? label maker is your b.f.f. really? if everything has a home in your home you will return things where they belong. the key to happiness is organization. i talk about it in the book. i have never seen an organized person that wasn t successful. it s a good thing to follow. interesting. i label efg in my home. i have little boxes that say camera equipment. i get home, put the camera where it belongs. my jeans are organized on a she shelf. i label right here skinny jeans, wide leg jeans. i never have to think where they are. i know where they are. in the morning i can get up, get ready fast. jewelry? i love hanging jewelry bags. they are not the perfect situation, so i have jewelry drawer organizers as well. but i like being able to see everything. i love those. now onto your beauty tips. you have great stuff. you love smoky eyes. i do. why? reporter: the family still lives around here. they go for walks, say hello to everyone and kate is known for remembering everyone s name and their dogs names, too. so the four-bedroom house goes up for auction in june. it is expected to bring 500,000 pounds. state agents say that s three times what it was worth hen kate lived here until she was a teenager. back to you. thank you very much. coming up next, get a jump start on your garden. what you need to do now to get your yard ready for spring and summer. first, this is today on nbc. this morning in today s fwar den prepping now for a lush lawn and a healthy garden later. it s been a tough winter, a stormy spring, but we are hoping the growing season is just right around the corner. here to help us jump start our gardens, lou, good to see you. nice green shirt. i m like a tree, my wife said. brown on the bottom, green on top. right, make like a tree and leaf. not before you tell us this. yeah. a lot of people saw snow last week. 80 in chicago last sunday. e everybody was excited. but mother s right. don t put plants in the ground before mother s day. east of the mississippi, north of the mason-dixon line, we are still cold weather can come. you can start things inside now. lots of nurseries, hardware stores have plants, but bring them inside. there are things you can do, even starting seeds. what s this? these are little starter kits. this is peat moss. i poured the water in there and the pellets expand so you can place seeds inside this. with gardening it s all about getting your hands dirty. get your seed inside there and you can transfer the pod into the garden. where is the best place to keep these? inside, near a window for a lot of sunlight or this line is nice. a container garden from fertile earth. they have kits that give you peat moss cubes in the kit. they give you starter seeds and a template to allow you to place the plants. they have an optional glow light and a water meter which is useful to find out if you are give stuff enough water. $30 and you can do it anywhere. mother s day, when you decide you want to be outside, you can transfer the stuff out. good time to start an herb garden? absolutely. imagine. you can take basil, parsley. you love to cook. imagine just pulling that fresh off your own plant. it s terrific. out in the garden you can prep the soil. it s too early to plant but save money by getting bags of peat moss from the home center. black dirt and compost. start to throw bags of that into the existing garden beds. this is actually calcium. i wish it were white, but it s calcium. the idea is it goes into the soil, promotes deep, heavy root growth just like when you drink milk and it promotes plants to grow healthy. what about seeding? life is too short. so am i. life is too short to buy cheap seeds or drink cheap wine. yes. don t buy cheap seeds. scott s has a terrific product called ez seed if you have patches you need to bring the lawn to life. black beauty has the fescue and bluegrass blends. rake the lawn first. what about dethatching? that s good, too. depending on the size of the lawn you can do it with a rake or rent a machine. with dethatching, the lawn will look worse after dethatching. once you do this, you need to feed it. that s important. scotts again. wonderful products. jonathan green organics which people are really getting into now trying to do this. they have a terrific spreader. this is called the snap bag that goes right inside here and you don t have to touch the fertilizer. or if you have a larger yard this is for you. easier than that. what do i do? i think you should be in control of certain news, absolutely. i found this next story extremely offensive. this group of girls went to watch american idol. they were so excited they got front row seats. they sat there and this one girl they said, no. not you. she said they say, no you re too big. 5 2 , 150 pounds. which is most of america. the way she is describing it, at american idol they want very cute, thin people in the front row so you see them immediately and everybody else goes to the back. it s really unfortunate. the girl is 19 and separated from her friends and probably already feeling not great about herself. that s just unkind. she has confidence because she is saying, i want an apology. most people would say, i m embarrassed and fade away. one of the ushers who did the seating apologized. i think they do that. if you look on television shows and watch who is in the front row, maybe you ll see that s a trend. that s what people do. they seat certain people in certain places so it s aesthetically pleasing to people at home watching. they don t do that at jerry springer. which is a nice thing. everybody right there in the front row. we have a fun performer today. have not heard of her, but apparently i m the only one in the world. globally she is a huge deal. jessie j. she has written songs for a bunch of people. she wrote for miley cyrus and chris brown. she is going to sing for us. she sang on the 8:00 hour. music made us all unite doesn t that sound a little like rihanna? don t air that. they ll send some passive-aggressive status updates. don t put that out in public. there is no tone involved. exactly. you can t tell, are they furious? are they having fun. exactly. also, we ve seen those couples who are very lovie dovy. i know you have your husband s e-mail, phone number, text message, instant messenger, you don t need to say, i love you, i hope you have a good day, honey bear, every day. when you re close with someone, your very good friend, you see they posted something that seemed sort of like something you should have known about before the world knew about it. like engagement or something. or a baby. yeah. that is very tricky. when i got engaged, we had to tell our family members don t post anything on facebook until give us a couple of days to call everyone we want to call so that they find out. you either have to really keep that information under wraps or you need to call everyone quickly. it s going to get out there now. even if you don t post it, someone else might say congratulations, i m so excited for the baby. it s interesting why everybody has to share everything in their lives. i think that s sad. it can be a lot. what about, here is one that bugs people. there is a picture taken of you with friends. you hated the picture, something was not right and your friends post it. it winds up tagged and whatever people do. it s everywhere and you can t get rid of it. this one drives me crazy. i was absolutely the one who had the beach pictures posted. i was like, oh, no. we don t need everyone i know to see that. my boss, no. but when you re posting photos on facebook and tagging people, you need to think about would i want this out there. maybe you might work in an office where it s totally fine to have girls night out photos with a cocktail in your hand, maybe your friend you tag her, she is a teacher. she doesn t want her kids or kids parents seeing her girls night out photos online. there is nothing you can do? if people tag you in the picture, you cannot? you can untag yourself but the photo is still up there. then you have to ask them to take it down. how do you know who is on your page? if some person careful, some ex is on your page, can you know?
