today on a thursday morning. i m matt lauer. good morning everyone. i m savannah in while ann is on assignment in iran. we ll get to her report and the latest on those hikers jailed there in just a moment. first, what could be a major break in the case of the missing utah mother susan powell. her husband josh powell has been named a person of interest in that case. now cadaver dogs have uncovered human remains during a search in the utah wilderness about three hours from where the couple was living at the time. we ll get the latest in a live report straight ahead. also ahead, a new book about sarah palin that was controversial before even one word was written because the author moved into a home right next door to the palins in wasilla while he was researching it. the former alaska governor will not like what he has written about her. does the author have an ax to grind? we ll talk to him exclusively. also ahead, your kids may love apple juice, but is it dangerous to them? dr. oz commissioned testing for his show that found high levels of arsenic in some popular brands. the fda says the findings are flawed. coming up we ll talk to dr. oz about that controversy. we begin on this thursday morning with that new search for missing utah mother susan powell that turned up human remains. nbc s george lewis has the latest on this investigation. george, good morning. reporter: good morning, matt. they found those remains about 150 miles south of here in a remote desert area where susan powell s husband, josh, says he took their two sons camping the day she disappeared. this latest chapter in the search for susan powell played out in an area favored by rock and gem collectors including powell s husband. investigators were in their second day of searching, using cadaver dogs trained to sniff out human remains. then wednesday afternoon the dogs found something. i was just informed a few moments ago that we have actually found human remains out here in this area. reporter: the big question, could they be the remains of susan powell? right. at this point we don t want to jump to conclusions and say we ve made any kind of positive identification because we have not. reporter: in washington, susan s father, chuck cox, said he was told by police that the remains were found in a shallow grave. it raises our hopes to some degree. we have every day we live with the idea that the phone s going to ring and the police are going to tell us we ve found susan or we found her body. reporter: but, he says, this is not the first time human remains have turned up in the search for susan. previous discoveries were the bones of other people. police have named susan s husband, josh, as a person of interest, while he denies having anything to do with her disappearance. police say he has stopped cooperating with them. wednesday he had no comment about these latest developments. relations between his family and susan s family have deteriorated, with both sides hurling accusations at each other. he may know something. if he knows something he needs to talk with the police. i think that would make their jobs a lot easier. reporter: forensic teams will assemble in the desert this morning to recover the remains and get them to a laboratory for testing. when we find human remains of any kind like that we will get ourselves a medical examiner to come out and take a look and help us. they can help identify the bones and all sorts of different things that we as law enforcement don t have knowledge of. reporter: now, in spite of finding those remains, police are continuing their search today. they won t say whether they are concentrating those efforts on areas josh powell frequented. matt? all right. george lewis for us on this story this morning. george, thank you very much. chuck and judy cox are susan powell s parents. mr. and mrs. cox, good morning to both of you. good morning, matt. good morning. mr. cox, you know, you ve been through these moments before over these last nearly two years where there seem to be dramatic developments in this investigation and they tend to fizzle out, so give me your reaction to this news. yeah. this is just another search area and they found some human remains and we are waiting on the police to do their investigation and the medical examiner. i would imagine, though, mr. cox, over these two years you ve developed a certain gut feeling about some of these tips. what s your gut tell you about this? well, initially, i m thinking this is a long ways for somebody to drive in the middle of the night and under conditions that with a blizzard coming in, so it wasn t very helpful. i just don t know what to think about it right now. i m glad the police this is an area the police have decided to search, and that makes it different from the other finds of remains where, you know, people just discovered them, so that makes it more hopeful, but, still, it s a long ways from to drive in the middle of the night. mrs. cox, have the police told you two anything more about specifically why they are searching in this area? have they drawn somewhat of a perimeter around an area where josh told them he was that night? i believe the police said that they have always wanted to search this area. it was a place of interest because both josh and susan have been there with the boys. i believe at another time, a visit or maybe camping. i m not sure. but they always wanted to look in this area. josh has been labeled a person of interest by the police and yet i guess the most current reports say that he is no longer cooperating with them, which i guess from legal perspectives might be understandable. do you have any contact with him these days and what are your feelings regarding him? no, we don t have any contact with him. i don t think he s ever cooperated with the police. in my opinion he hasn t. and what do i think? i think that he should expect that the police would be looking at him and he would he should be helping them to help find our daughter. and, mr. cox, you said something in george lewis spot that i want to ask you to explain a little. you said a discovery like this raises our hopes a little bit. it sounds as if you have already made the decision that susan is deceased, but you just want some kind of closure. it raises our hopes that we re going to have some kind of closure of what happened to her, but on the other hand, it also it takes away the hope that she is alive, so it s kind of both edges of the sword. i don t know where we go with that. it s just something we re living with. chuck and judy cox, our thoughts continue to be with you mr. and mrs. cox. i thank you for joining us this morning. thank you. thank you. it s eight minutes after the hour. here s savannah. matt thank you. now to iran and the latest on those efforts to free two american hikers held in a prison there. ann is in tehran again for us this morning. ann, good morning to you. reporter: that s right. good morning, savannah. there is a last-minute flurry of activity behind the scenes to finalize this deal. the judiciary still appears to be slowing down the process, and there is still no confirmation that a plane has already left oman to pick up the two hikers here from iran, but they re here. there seems to be little doubt that a deal is being done. last night the lawyer representing shane bauer and josh fattal told nbc news he was already making bail arrangements. translator: i have informed both the hikers families and the swiss embassy, which represents their interests, and as soon as the bail is prepared, we will deposit and, god willing, they will be released. reporter: on tuesday president ahmadinejad made clear the release would be imminent. i think these two prisoners will be freed in a couple of days. reporter: in a couple of days. in couple of days. they will be freed. reporter: today, not only is the judiciary dragging its feet, now a member of the parliament s national security committee is saying publicly, according to the constitution, the executive branch of government has no right to make decisions about the people charged with espionage. this rhetoric is similar to what we heard just before the third hiker sarah shourt was released a year ago yesterday on humanitarian grounds. i feel, myself, i have a huge debt to repay the world for what it s done for me, and my first priority is to help my fiance shane bauer and my friend josh fattal to gain their freedom. reporter: she was taken out on a private plane sent by the sultan of oman. the u.s. state department did not confirm reports that a plane from oman left wednesday for iran. still, numerous sources tell nbc news the release is now just a matter of time. josh and shane s mothers have never given up, working hard to make sure the world would not forget their sons. josh s mother, laura, last talked to us in may. it really has gone from ridiculous and absurd in terms of length of detention to cruel and inhumane. reporter: two families, and sarah shourd, as well, appear about to have a heart felt wish come true. you can see this is a very emotional time for these families. we ll let you know when we find out what happens next. savannah, back to you. all right, ann. thank you so much. it s now 7:11. once again, here is matt. savannah now we turn to politics where president obama is taking new hits over his proposed jobs bill. this is one of the front runners in the gop presidential race traveled to new york for a high profile meeting. nbc s political director and chief white house correspondent chuck todd has details. reporter: the week is not yet over but signs are the president is still struggling to sell this jobs bill, even now as congressional democrats are beginning to raise concerns. for the obama white house, it s been a week of bad news. from the special election losses in new york and nevada to those capitol hill hearings looking into why one of the president s signature stimulus ideas, green jobs, hasn t come to fruition, to a new poll showing a majority of americans doubt the president s proposed jobs bill will have any impact on the struggling economy. it s a bleak backdrop for the president s jobs push. hello! reporter: making his third trip to a swing state since friday, the president wasted no time in challenging congressional republicans. they like to talk about how we re in favor of america s jobs creators. you know what? if you re in favor of america s jobs creators this is your bill. republicans aren t buying it. jim demint called the president s pitch a trap for the gop. if we vote for this plan we ll own the economy with the president. he desperately needs someone else to blame it on. if we vote against it, he s going to try to say congress blocked his ability to create jobs. reporter: even some democrats acknowledge the political pressure on their party, pointing to the new york city special election defeat as a red flag for 2012. the message, once again, came loud and clear. get to work putting america back to work. reporter: some obama supporters are worried there s a disconnect between the president s likability and the fact that some voters are simply giving up on him as a leader. he has to prove to people that he s a strong leader, a decisive leader, and he s bringing back the economy and unless and until he does that, it doesn t matter that people personally like him. reporter: despite all the bad news the president remains competitive with leading republican candidates rick perry and mitt romney. perry continues to play up his blunt talking image, telling time magazine and i think the american citizens are just tired of all of this, you know, political correctness and politicians who are tiptoeing around important issues. they want a decisive leader. reporter: perry spent his day wooing evangelicals at jerry falwell s liberty university, then went to new york to woo celebrity businessman turned tea party activist donald trump. the two hob nobbed with models at a fashion show and went to dinner at the swanky restaurant john george s, a much more formal affair compared to trump s pizza party with sarah palin in july. and today the white house got a little bit more bad news when it comes to his jobs bill. a handful of senate democrats are saying, you know what? let s not take it all up at once. let s take it piece meal, the exact same things republicans said a few days earlier, matt. chuck todd the food and drug administration is working to find the source of contaminated cantaloupes being blamed for a listeria outbreak that has now killed four people. nbc s tom costello has more. tom, good morning. reporter: good morning to you. we re talking about rocky ford melons and they re a lot bigger than the melons we get on the east coast. they re grown about 130 miles south of denver and are famous for their big size and sweet taste. the fda is warning consumers not to eat rocky ford cantaloupe shipped by jensen farms and throw away any recalled product that may be still in the home. jensen farms is voluntarily recalling rocky ford cantaloupes shipped from july 29th through september 10th and distributed to at least 17 states. the cdc says there may have been four deaths already in new mexico blamed on listeria. at least 22 people in seven states have been affected. at least three of the fatal cases include people in their 60s and 90s and listeria is known to affect the elderly as well as the pregnant and young people. we should tell you this. the cantaloupes are specifically produced and shipped under a couple brand names we ll show you in a minute. at the same time we will well, we don t have that graphic. i m sorry. the bottom line is we re looking at people who might have weakened immune systems as well because of exposure to listeria and there are the states it comes from. back to you, natalie. all right. tom costello with that information. thank you, tom. a norwegian cruise ship caught fire this morning and was forced to evacuate off norway s western coast. 262 people were onboard when an engine room fire broke out on the ship. at least two people were killed and several others taken to a hospital with burns and smoke inhalation injuries. swiss bank ubs is revealing that a rogue trader cost it an estimated $2 billion. cnbc s melissa lee is at the new york stock exchange with more for us. tell us about it. reporter: good morning, natalie. let s be clear these were unauthorized trades and while analysts say the loss is manageable it as black eye for the company and may ultimately lead to the bank reporting a loss for its third quarter. so far one 31-year-old man has been arrested. ubs says the matter is under investigation and that no client money was affected. meantime more dire news on the housing front. according to realty track the default notices on u.s. homes increased by the biggest monthly amount in about four years although foreclosure activity overall, natalie, was down. all right. melissa lee at the new york stock exchange, thank you. the leaders of france and britain arrived in libya this morning to discuss aid and transition to democracy. british prime minister david cameron and french president nicolas sarkozy are the first heads of state to visit tripoli since moammar gadhafi fled. the father of missing teen natalee holloway is asking a court to declare her dead. that is a move that came as a surprise to the girl s mother. holloway was last seen in may of 2005 during a trip to aruba. her case has never been solved and a lawyer for her father says he is seeking closure for his family. marine dakota meyer received the military s highest honor today but last night he enjoyed a much more intimate honor from the commander-in-chief himself, president obama inviting the war hero to share a couple pints of beer on the patio outside the oval office. in 2009 meyer charged through heavy gunfire in afghanistan five times to rescue 13 american troops and 23 afghan soldiers all while being wounded himself. matt and savannah and al you won t believe he was once told he would never become a marine by a military recruiter. guess he proved him wrong. congratulations to him. i know it was a hoping to catch a glimpse of them. here s nbc. reporter: in the chilly waters off southern california s coast, the hunt is on again for blue whales. there s a tail. there s a tail. reporter: all hands on deck have all eyes on the sea. then it happens. watch for the tail. oh! like nothing i ve ever seen before. they re so huge. reporter: the length of a basketball court, the weight of 15 school buses, these storied creatures of the deep are somehow so graceful the simple stroke of their flukes so elegant. they re so beautiful. beautiful. love it. reporter: ten years ago, seeing just a single blue whale here would have been rare, but this year there s been more than 500 sightings so far. for kayakers, a close encounter like few have ever witnessed. we live on the california coast, but you don t actually see them like this. reporter: it seems the world s largest creature is searching for one of the ocean s smallest shrimp-like crill. this stretch of the pacific are fertile feeding ground, ripe this time of the year. hunted primarily for their bluber blue whales were headed toward extinction when in 1966 they were placed on the endangered species list. scientists won t say they re thriving but there are roughly 10,000 worldwide. off the coast in long beach their biggest threat now may be passing ships. look! reporter: but their proximity may also lead to progress. on this trip, researchers believe they caught a rare glimpse of blue whales courting. what we got to see today was off the charts. reporter: these blue whales, a reminder of what we almost lost a spectacular does he have an ax to grind? we ll get to that as we speak to him exclusively. plus, are there dangerous levels of arsenic in your child s apple juice? we ll talk to dr. oz about his alarming new claim and why the fda says he s got it all wrong. and a reminder, tomorrow, right here on today an exclusive interview with charlie sheen. he opens up about his current emotional state after everything he s been through this year. it s a lot calmer. it s a lot mellower, yeah. you know, that was a time when, you know, what happened i don t really know what happened. it was one of those things where where the planets were either aligned perfectly or imperfectly, but i just i said some stuff and then it it caught such traction globally and instantly that i couldn t i couldn t really put out the fire, you know, so i had to kind of keep fueling it. again, you can catch our exclusive interview with charlie sheen. that is tomorrow morning right here on today. all right. we begin this half hour with the casey anthony case and more from george and cindy anthony s revealing interview with dr. phil. nbc s kerry sanders has the latest for us this morning. good morning. reporter: good morning, savannah. part two of dr. phil s interview with george and cindy anthony focused on what they believe happened to their granddaughter, caylee, and in shocking admissions through tears they reveal what they believe, what role they think their daughter, casey, who was acquitted of murder, played in their granddaughter s death. you all disagree about that? reporter: in the aftermath of their daughter casey s murder trial, george and cindy anthony remain a couple divided. cindy has rationalized things a lot different than i do. i think that s what makes us the couple that we are. reporter: splintered by their different beliefs about casey s involvement in their granddaughter s death. i blame my daughter for caylee not being here today. you feel in this situation you ve lost two parts of your family. you ve lost casey and caylee. i lost caylee three years ago and i believe i lost casey at the same time. i believe that. she s responsible. do you believe she was in the woods burying that baby? i believe she was there. i also believe she probably had some help. reporter: throughout their interview with dr. phil, cindy presented excuse i think there is something seriously wrong with my daughter and her thought processes. i think that something started before or during her pregnancy and after caylee was born. i think something started to trigger. reporter: after excuse. casey s belief, as soon as someone dies, they leave their body and that s no longer caylee. reporter: while george continued to lay out the blame. i i believe that casey or someone else that she was with possibly gave too much to caylee. she fell asleep and didn t wake up. that s what i feel. gave too much what? possibly some kind of drug or something like that. i mean, there s been speculation about xanax or whatever it might be. reporter: as cindy sat stunned, shaking her head, for the first time george revealed his theory of caylee s murder. so you think it was like a chemical babysitter. we need to sedate this child so what? so so she could leave? what would be the purpose of sedating the child? to go out and have a good time, to be with friends, to have this life that she didn t have with caylee. i mean, some freedom that she wanted. that s what i feel. you find that speculation offensive? well, it s the first time i ve heard it, and we ve been through this for three years and this is the first time i ve heard that out of his mouth. there was never any sign that caylee was drugged, and with the toxicology reports i don t buy that for a moment. i ve said it a few different times i believe a lot of different that happened. i really do. but you never told me your theory that you thought that caylee was sedated. this is the first time you ever said that to me. i m really kind of shocked to hear that today. reporter: a couple still haunted by the unknown. you know, to think that caylee could be treated like that, that s that s not a way a child or a human should be treated. there s no way. and if this scenario that casey had told her defense about caylee drowning, why go through all this elaborate stuff to tape her up, to put her in a laundry bag, to put her in a trash bag and bury her in the woods? i can t comprehend a human doing that, especially a daughter doing that to my granddaughter. i can t. reporter: and struggling to find closure. i prayed to god for three years to find out what happened to caylee, and i prayed during the whole trial that god would give me closure, and if casey was responsible for caylee s death that casey would go to jail and be punished and when that verdict came in and casey was free, i got my answer, that it was an accident. and i believe that justice for caylee was when her mother walked. reporter: on monday, more of this interview, which we will hear from george and cindy with their reaction to the trial, including the defense s allegation that george sexually molested his daughter, casey. savannah? we will find out. and later, sienna miller speaks out for the first time about that knew was the world phone hacking scandal and the toll it took on her right after this. back now at 7:41 with the controversial new tell all book on former alaska governor sarah palin. it was written by long-time political author joe mcginnis, who moved right next door to the palins to do his research. we spoke to him exclusively about some of the bombshell claims he s making. reporter: from the moment she stepped on to the political stage, sarah palin has been a force. they say the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull, lip stick. reporter: self-styled mama grizzly. you don t want to mess with moms who are rising up. reporter: reality tv star. dang it. reporter: her large family fascinating the country with its dramas, babies, and feuds. i hear he goes by the name ricky hollywood now. reporter: but now a controversial new book takes aim at the image palin projects to the world. the rogue a 318-page takedown of palin by best selling author joe mcginnis paints a scathing portrait of the woman who could have been vice president. utter fraud. an absolute and utter fraud. reporter: you call her a tenth grade mean girl. oh, that s those are kind words compared to a lot of what you would hear in wasilla today. the thing that i found, savannah, that really surprised me, was that the people who know her best like her least. reporter: mcginnis spent four months in alaska, claims he spoke to approximately 200 people, a mix of palin s old associates, acquaintances, and former friends. but his book was causing controversy before he wrote even one word. she had a problem with you living next door. well, she did. i don t know why she did, because reporter: really? you don t know why? i really don t. reporter: mcginnis says it was just happenstance that the woman who owns the property next doorpalins in wasilla offered to rent his house to him for the summer. palin revealed her new neighbor on facebook writing wonder what kind of material he ll gather while overlooking piper s bedroom, my little garden, and the family swimming hole. and on her reality show. piper whispered to me as we re coming up the lawn, mom, that neighbor is out there watching us. he s watching us. reporter: an editorial in the local paper warns mcginnis alaska has a law that allows the use of deadly force in protection of life and property. has that been a problem or do you just go with the flow? like todd says, some people just need to get a life. bless his heart. he needs to get a life. i was surprised at sarah s reaction but it taught me something very interesting. she over reacts. she has no modulation in her responses to stress. in other words, she freaks out. reporter: mcginnis insists he was not there to spy and that anything he learned about the palins from living next door did not go into the book. but the experience becomes a huge part of the story. you really became a character in the book. well, sarah made me a character. she s a phenomenon. i said that to todd when he came tropical moistu tromping across my lawn to confront me for living next door. he said why are you writing about her anyway? i said, well todd, i ve been writing about politics since 1968. your wife is a phenomenon. there s been no one like her in american politics before, no one who has come from nowhere to get so far. reporter: in a statement to nbc news, todd palin writes that mcginnis is a man who, quote, tras traffics in innuendo and falsehoods and spent the last year interviewing marginal figures with an ax to grind in order to churn out a hit piece to satisfy his own creepy obsession with my wife. mcginnis talking with those who know palin convinces him there is much less than meets the eye. he accuses the famed hockey mom of using her children as props and reports she was not much of a mother at all. people who have known that family for the entire period of time that those children were growing up told me in ways that i found very believable that sarah palin was virtually nonexistent as a mother. reporter: mcginnis describes a rocky palin marriage with todd and sarah fighting and threatening divorce, something they ve denied in the past. another bombshell, mcginnis writes that both todd and sarah have used cocaine in the past, a claim that has not been verified. how do you substantiate something like that? well you talk to somebody who snorted it with her and you talk to many of todd s friends who describe him as having been on the end of the straw frequently in his youth. i m not saying todd and sarah palin today abuse cocaine or even use it. but there is no question that they both did at one point in their lives. reporter: mcginnis also quotes friends who speak of a sexual encounter palin had with basketball star glen rice in 1987 while she was a sports reporter for a local anchorage station prior to her narnmarria. it is not clear from the book whether rice admits or denies the encounter but he told mcginnis in a short time we got to know a lot about one another. it was all done in a respectful way, nothing hurried. she was a gorgeous woman, super nice. i was blown away by her. afterward she was a big crush that i had. mcginnis portrays palin as hands off when it came to governing alaska but a ruthless political opportunist who crushed her enemies and rarely lived up to the fiscal conservative image she championed. hypocrite, you know, at the best. at best she s a hypocrite. reporter: and at worst? at worst she s a vindictive hypocrite. reporter: mcginnis says the palin enemy list in alaska is long, but acknowledges he talked to few friends. do you think you were fair to her in the book? i think i was as fair as i could possibly have been, given the fact that she told all the people who were closest to her not to talk to me. reporter: now as palin tantalizes supporters with travel to early primary states many wonder just what are her political intentions? this child was severely malnourished, days away from death. reporter: sienna told me back in london how the hacking changed her life, loves, and movie career. i can t imagine what that time was like for you when you say something in a private conversation and it shows up in a newspaper. at the time i was incredibly paranoid and stories were coming out that nobody knew about, no one except my mother, my sister, my boyfriend, and my best friend. and, you know, there were times when i would sit down with those four people and accuse one of them of selling stories. and i d also terrible, but i would tell my best friends things and see if they came out. they never did. reporter: what happens to your family unit, to your friendships, when you have major trust issues? you know, everything is compromised enormously. it s had a huge impact on relationships, friendships, career, all sorts of things. but on a personal level just that feeling of violation. it was bad for me, but now obviously what s come to light is that victims of crime were being hacked and that s atrocious. it s on another level. reporter: give us an idea of how you kind of pieced together the puzzle? voice malice. people would leave voice mails i would never get and that started to happen a lot. obviously these mails were being listened to and were no longer new so wouldn t be in my inbox. then i d sort of plant stories. we d leave messages on certain people s phones and it would come out. reporter: with her life unraveling in the papers most weekends sienna went on the attack. you did something about it. first you went to police. what happened with that? the police were reluctant to give up any information. you know, you trust the police force and it was shocking to know that you couldn t in this case. reporter: it took years. turns out some police officers were being paid for information by the tabloids. i took them to court and i got a box about this big of notes taken by private investigators my phone numbers, access numbers, p.i.n. numbers, pass words, pass words of my friends, family, work colleagues. i mean a huge, this kind of web of interception stretched for miles and very personal, personal information on notes. reporter: that s when she decided to sue the news of the world the biggest selling sunday tabloid in the world. you took on a media giant and especially when you re someone who relies on the media to do what you do, how much courage did that take? it was really scary, and there were definitely times when i doubted whether it was something i should do. it had potential huge repercussions on my career and it was just too horrendous to not expose. i think it s i m really happy that i did. reporter: sienna refused to settle out of court and was the first person to get judgment and full admissions against the news of the world and the judge awarded damages of 100,000 pounds, around $150,000. less than a year later the most powerful media moguls in the world, rupert murdoch and his son james have had to testify before a parliamentary committee as part of an ongoing inquiry into press ethics. in one of the civil trials at the end of 2010, which i believe was the sienna miller case, civil trial around illegal voice mail interceptions the company immediately went to look at additional records around the individual involved. and since then the company has admitted liability to victims of illegal voice mail interceptions. reporter: did you hear him say that? what was your reaction? i did hear him say that. my reaction initially was, you know, i felt sort of proud. but it s, you know, a huge empire is sort of unraveling in a sense. but do i feel vindicated? [ male announcer ] venza from toyota. parents who saw the dr. oz show on wednesday may be throwing out their bottles and boxes of apple juice this morning. the show says an independent lab it hired found some brands have potentially dangerous levels of arsenic in them, but the fda says dr. oz got it wrong. we ll talk to him in a moment. but first, nbc s tom costello is in washington with the details on this. tom, good morning. reporter: hi, matt. good morning to you. in fact, the fda is calling the show irresponsible for what it says is bad information. for the audience watching the dr. oz show wednesday the allegation was startling. some of the best known brands in america have arsenic in their apple juice. reporter: the show says it hired an independent lab to test samples of apple juice produced overseas. that lab found one-third of the samples contained levels of arsenic higher than what the epa allows in drinking water. but guess what? there is no limit on arsenic in apple juice. reporter: the fda says that s misleading because there are different types of arsenic, some dangerous like from pesticides and some that s naturally occurring and not as dangerous. the dr. oz show only counted the total amount of arsenic without differentiating. in letters to the show a senior scientist at the fda warned that, quote, it would be irresponsible and misleading for the dr. oz show to suggest that apple juice contains unsafe amounts of arsenic. the fda also questioned the testing methods used by the show, since the fda conducted its own tests of the same apple juice lots and found arsenic levels well within safe margins, almost zero. try and interpret that data to mean that apple juice is unsafe, is misleading, it s irresponsible. and i think they re needlessly scaring parents. reporter: dr. oz responded by calling for more scientific research. i don t want folks to stop drinking apple juice. i want us to more seriously figure out if we ve got an issue with apple juice. reporter: dr. oz says he is still buying american made apple juice while the juice industry insists all of its products are tested and safe. apple juice is tested before it enters the country. apple juice is tested before it enters the marketplace. apple juice is tested after it enters the marketplace. apple juice has been tested by fda for years, and fda has no cause for concern. reporter: the dr. oz show of course is very popular and dr. oz, himself, has become something of a national health guru, but in this case he s accused of getting it wrong and scaring his audience, matt. tom costello, thank you very much. dr. oz is with us now. good morning. good morning. so i m a father of three children, 11, 7, and 4. apple juice is a staple in my house as it is in homes all across the country. on your show you sounded the alarm and you said you re concerned about the levels of arsenic found in some apple juices. you say it can be dangerous for long-term exposure. the fda disagrees. why should i believe you and not the fda? you know, i have four children and like you and many parents i was very concerned to hear some reports which we began to process over the summer about other groups besides ours that there might be arsenic levels in apple juice higher than we would expect and allow and desire. so we did our own independent investigation, and we found studying 36 samples obtained from different parts of this country that we were i den fooig in about in about 30% of the samples levels higher than in our drinking or bottled water. we took this information to the trade organizations, to the juice companies, to the fda and asked if we should be alarmed. no one was willing to talk to us. we couldn t get anyone to offer any insight that was meaningful. they wouldn t come on the show. when i asked the fda how they figured out what would be a safe level of arsenic because we don t really have a level that is as a law in this country for the amount of arsenic in apple juice. right. they asked us to file a freedom of information act document. even if they didn t talk to you back then they are now speaking in reaction to what you said on the air on thursday. the fda says you missed, in your testing, something very important. that your testing failed to distinguish between organic arsenic and inorganic arsenic, and only took into account total arsenic levels and that you cannot accurately assess a threat level or danger level using that methodology. well, what s used today for drinking water in this country is the total arsenic level. in addition, when we asked the fda what level they thought may be of concern they didn t have anything for apple juice but said for pear juice they used a total arsenic level. so we went with the kinds of data they were looking for when they do their baseline service. in addition other peer reviewed reports of arsenic levels in apples have looked at inorganic versus organic levels. most of the arsenic found has been inorganic in nature. it takes weeks to differentiate the two. i also don t think it is fair to argue organic arsenic is safe. there are many folks, people who spend a lot of time studying toxins in the environment, who are concerned about organic arsenic levels as well. admittedly inorganic is what we should focus on. right. but the organic levels are of concern as well. you bring up the comparison to drinking water. we went to an independent expert at cornell s department of food and science. he says this about your study. he says the number of juice samples dr. oz took for analysis are not a statistically valid number of samples to make generalizations about the juice industry. this is a nonscientific way for extrapolating what a problem is. how would you respond to that? well, we studied 36 samples. when the fda came to us and expressed concerns we restudied them. they still were upset. so we actually had a different group submit 30 more samples and got that data as well, which was very similar to what we found in the first two studies. and so when we saw that compared to, you know, the limited amount of data out there, there have been three other groups but they ve also been relatively small samples you realize the call to action here is not to condemn other folks. i love apple juice. i ve been a big advocate. part of the reason i wanted to do the show is because i ve been talking so much about the benefits of things like apple juice. if we re going to have a discussion about the arsenic levels in our apple juice let s have it and be clear on what we re really offering to folks that we re talking to about this stuff. so parents getting ready to prepare breakfast for their kids or sending their kids off to school with a drink that could be apple juice, the takeaway message, even though you re getting pushback now from the fda, your takeaway message this morning is what? my takeaway message is that i m concerned because 60% of the apples we use in apple juice in america do not come from apples grown in this country, because we have changed our growth and treatment of apples in this country by banning the use of arsenic, pesticides in those apples but that is not true in other countries, that there is a heightened level of concern by me and others that there is arsenic slipping into our food supply by these imported apples so let s figure it out. in the meantime i would not pull the apple juice oust the bt of you re giving your kids. it s not harmful short term. it s only the long-term ramifications, matt, i m worried about. all right. dr. oz, we will follow this story. we thank you for your time this morning, doctor. thank you. just ahead, singer gavin degrop opens up about his assault here in new york city and will perform live. first your local news. ahead,er degroup. 8:26 is your time now on this thursday, september 15th, 2011. i am eun yang. let s look at the changing forecast. what is happening, tom? italian chardonay. it s not oakie. this is very good. much lighter than a normal chardonay. made with italian sensibility. yeah, okay. all right. fine. that s one good option. you also like sansare. i know you do too. very much. this is made in france. it is very minerally and racy. this is less like a green apple, more slaty, limey, grassy. and also a wine that has good body, you know, good enough for a tomato salad but maybe also your first pumpkin soup. these are wines that make the transition from summer to fall. as we mentioned these are wines so far under $20? that is the amazing thing. 15 bucks, 15 bucks. okay. rose, again, like one of these wines that it s like a bisexual wine. you know what i mean? you can have it for people who like white wine or people who like red wine. let s go back to the chardonay for a second, joe. rose is the wine for everybody. it s a bisexual wine? it s kind of like if you like a glass of white wine cold, great. if you like red wine more full bodied so if you have the group of people who want to drink everything rose is what you have. this is tuscan. the reason i like rose, not for the reasons you suggested, but for the reason that if i m having a glass of wine at lunch which isn t all that often i like rose at lunch. put it in your mouth. it has the body of a red wine. it has a little bit of that grip but it s still cool and refreshing. you could have it with maybe a piece of steak or with a tomato salad. joe referencing a next segment coming up. this under $20 as well. this is like 15 bucks. these ar maize imazing. we ll move on to the reds. what would be the overwhelming characteristic, someone about to taste a rio ha would be looking for? you think of spain, old world but not fruit. you think about tobacco, cedar, cigars, what we called secondary sensations in wine. this is a heterosexual wine? no. this is full on macho stuff. okay. this is like old world. yeah. that s like, oo. it s also very smooth though. very smooth. very good. very sensible. very balanced. okay. and we move on to a merlot. this wine really impressed me. normally we think about california merlot, napa valley merlot. this wine is very interesting because it has a little bit of old world sensibility. it is fruit flavored. you think about merlot, blueberry pie people hear you say that and most people look at it and go, bull. but you really you get a sense of blueberry pie in this? smell it. i mean, maybe less obvious in this one which is why i like it. i get more cherries and a little bit more of kind of like a reserve and a grip. you feel that grip? yeah. it stays with you a little bit. right. so it s not exaggerated. what would you serve this with? this i would serve with a fatty piece of steak, maybe beets, goat cheese, some sort of creamy cheese. so old world, new world with great sensibility but these wines will take you from summer to fall. take you from the volleyball court to the football field, matt. perhaps a twist on the not know their round from a foreshank a trip to the butcher can be intimidating. here to help us navigate our local meat departments the author of the new book the art of beef cutting. good morning to you. it is intimidating. you go to the butcher counter and see all this stuff and it is hard to know what to get. why do you think people feel that way? when you go to the meat counter it s just a big sea of red. we just had our wine expert on. you look at all these wines and get confused and it is the same thing with meat products. i know your first tip is don t be afraid of the butcher. thanks. well, they are behind the meat counter or maybe you have to ring the buzzer to find them. don t be afraid. think of them as your meat concierge. if you re looking for lean or something really good the butcher can guide you through the meat case. and it is arranged a certain way. what is a good tip? basically it s just arranged by meat, by protein. chicken, pork, beef. if you know what you re looking for just go right at it. let s get right to it. meat is graded and the most common selections are prime, choice, and select. everybody wants to know what a great steak is. and i think the best tip is to look for quality grades. so a side of beef is graded and so here we have a prime grade, a choice grade, and a select. and the difference is basically all of this internal fat, i like to call it flavor. okay. the marbling. is that what this is? yes. the interim marbling. when you grill that it s going to melt right into the meat. so basically the better the cut of meat the more fat it has. absolutely. i m with you. i m catching on here. yes. these are tough times and people with leaner budgets want to still have good cuts of meat. what can you offer? because we can t all have filet mignon every night. no we can t but it s the most tender muscle in the whole beef animal. right here the second tenderest muscle. right here is $20 a pound and here is $s10. this is a nice bone in rib eye which is usually $14 to $16 a pound and ask your butcher to cut the chuck eye steaks. when we slice through it s the next piece, right together. again, looking about $8 a pound. now these cut up pieces for kabob or something? this is the butcher s trick. they like to cut this up and charge you more right? what you re going to do is buy a piece of top sirloin, save $1 or $2 a pound and cut it yourself. and our final cheaper option is what? right. we have a pork back rib usually about $6 to $8 a pound and you can ask your butcher or meat cutter to cut what we call a st. louis style spare rib. and the st. louis style is nice and small and it s much more affordable. let s move back here. okay. one thing i know you really recommend is to use the butcher and get him to do a custom cut for you. yes. everybody is afraid of the butcher. they think it s going to be this big, massive production. that s because he s holding a knife or she is. right. you scared me right there. there we go. i just really wanted to point out that if you want a thicker cut all the butcher is going to do is just take this boneless rib eye for example, i like my rib eye steaks about an inch and a half thick and it s just that simple. that is the steak. if you want it a little thinner just cut it like that and that is all there is to it. finally a couple issues. bone in versus bone out. bone in is better because there is more flavor? right. what a bone does is it holds in the heat so bones cook a little quicker. if you re pressed for time. it adds a nice extra flavor. so here we took the bone right off this rib eye and this is the exact same cut and it gives it that wonderful amazing flavor. okay. finally cooking method. what is the thing to remember when you get into cooking? all cuts of beef are tender if you know how to we told you how to choose them over here. we gave you great tips. now we ll teach you how to use it. so cuts from the rib and the loin, excellent for grilling. that goes for lamb and pork, too. so anything that says rib or loin on the label is what you re looking for. okay. if it s shoulder or chuck we ll braize. thank you so much. i just love it. a female butcher great tour with maroon 5. we were playing these amazing venues. i was in the new york area, had a night off, went down to my venue downtown and i was out with friends. and i had a night out and i left my place and was walking home. you know, the street that i walked thousands of times literally, and a group said something to me. do you remember what they said? i don t because it was just like the flurry happened. but derogatory? yeah. the tone was weird. and i turned like, what s the tone? and that was the the lights went out. it was kind of like the lights went out. there were at least three of these people? yeah. nobody has been arrested. no, nobody has been arrested. and you got beaten up pretty badly. broken nose. yeah. you got a concussion. you don t even get to say you should have seen the other guy because you don t know what happened to the other guy. because i couldn t see the other guy. right. yeah. it was rough. you know, it was one of those rough, rough nights, you know. i was after it happened i was i got up to, you know, walk to the hospital, just got progressively worse, you know. i was walking and i was very, very bloody, which caused me to panic, which made it just that much worse. and didn t you then get clipped by a taxi? exactly. yeah. i m told i got clipped by a taxi. my head was already so rocked from the concussion and my balance was off, my vision was blurry. and the 911 call was, hey, i just saw this guy get hit by a taxi. whether i got clipped by it or possibly i went up to it to get in to like say, can you help me, but i was wearing a white shirt just covered in blood, you know? i mean a lot of this had to be pieced together by pieces of information that you got from other people. exactly. my first thought is you re a singer. you break your nose. right. the nasal area can change your voice. oh, absolutely. were you worried about that? yeah. that was definitely a primary concern. i think the worst of it all was my mom s birthday was a week later. her 60th birthday. and we were all supposed to meet in nashville for a show. and just seeing their faces after this was really the worst thing. but then after realizing how bad off i was by the looks on their faces that s when i started concentrating on my voice and thinking i m in trouble. i ve been listening to you rehearse. you sound really good. thank you. you re going back out on tour which is great and you re going to sing for us this morning. exactly. i have a wonderful tour lined up where i ll fortunately be able to play some songs from my new record which is coming out been misforgue abomisforgue missing for about two years now. susan powell is that woman. police say they ve found, using cadaver dogs, some human remains in a remote desert area about 30 miles from where her husband says he was camping on the day that susan powell disappeared. we ll have more on that case, coming up. in another development with money being tight these days, a lot of folks finding it hard to maybe buy that first home or maybe move up to another home. well, barbara corcoran scoured the country for great houses and all of these, believe it or not, are under $200,000. we morning, everyone. new developments in the almost two-year-long search for missing utah mother susan powell. human remains have been found in the utah desert and officials now are trying to determine if they are hers. nbc s george lewis is in west valley city, utah. george, good morning. reporter: good morning, natalie. those remains were found in a remote area about 150 miles south of here. it s near where her husband, josh, says he took the two children camping the day she disappeared. this latest chapter in the search for susan powell, played out in an area favored by rock and gem collectors including powell s husband. investigators were in their second day of searching, using cadaver dogs trained to sniff out human remains. then wednesday afternoon the dogs found something. i was just informed a few moments ago that we have actually found human remains out here in this area. reporter: the big question, could they be the remains of susan powell? right. at this point we don t want to jump to conclusions and say that we ve made any kind of positive identification because we have not. reporter: in washington, susan s father, chuck cox, said he was told by police that the remains were found in a shallow grave. it raises our hopes that we re going to have some kind of closure of what happened to her, so but on the other hand, it also takes away the hope that she is alive. reporter: but he says this is not the first time human remains have turned up in the search for susan, that previous discoveries were the bones of other people. police have named susan s husband, josh, as a person of interest while he denies having anything to do with her disappearance. police say he has stopped cooperating with them. wednesday he had no comment about these latest developments. relations between his family and susan s family have deteriorated, with both sides hurling accusations at each other. he may know something. if he knows something he needs to talk with the police. i think that would make their jobs a lot easier. reporter: forensic teams will assemble in the desert this morning to recover the remains and get them to a laboratory for testing. when we find human remains of any kind like that we will get ourselves a medical examiner to come out and take a look to help us. they can help identify the bones. they can help identify all sorts of different things we as just law enforcement don t have knowledge of. reporter: and we re told that medical examiner will be on the scene later this morning. the first thing they ll try to do is determine the race and the gender of the remains. the process of identifying them could take sometime. natalie? all right, george lewis in west valley city, utah, thank you, george. today former marine dakota meyer will receive the medal of honor, the nation s highest military honor in a ceremony at the white house. he saved 36 lives during an ambush in afghanistan in 2009. meyer says, quote, it s hard getting recognized for the worst day of your life. last night he shared a couple beers with the president, who will award him the medal today. the fda is warning about a listeria outbreak and is telling consumers not to eat rocky ford cantaloupes shipped by jensen farms in holly, colorado. the outbreak has killed four people and sickened dozens in at least seven states. jensens farms is voluntarily recalling cantaloupe it shipped between july 29th and september 10th. u.s. supreme court justice ruth bader ginsburg was one of the 179 passengers forced to evacuate a plane on an emergency chute wednesday. the 78-year-old was unharmed. at least one other person was injured, though, when an engine caught fire aboard the united flight just before takeoff near washington, d.c. and despite tight economic times, nasa has unveiled plans for a new deep space rocket which some say could cost $35 million. if all goes well the first blast off could take place within a decade with far as today s weather, we have a funnel system bringing showers in the northeast and that will bring behind it cooler temperatures, much needed relief as far south as northern and central texas. 83 here in the northeast, and showers in west texas and on into parts of the southwest, and we re expecting showers in hawaii and alaska as well. some rain with decreasing intensity is moving east out of the shenandoah valley. and then this afternoon, sun may break out, but a passing shower or thundershower is possible into midafternoon. clearing out late afternoon and into tonight, a gusty wind will drop the temperatures from the 70s into the 40 tomorrow morning and the northwest wind will time for today s real estate and what you can get across the country for less than $200,000. today real houses out there. i picked out good ones. let s start in grand rapids, michigan, an oldie but goodie built in 1849 for $144,000. it s got seven bedrooms. seven bedrooms. and you re not going to believe it when you see the outside of the house because it doesn t really look it. you can t judge it from the outside. what it really needs is a good paint job but yet it has the original details like the dentile molding and nice porch columns. wait until you get inside. it s a totally different picture. inside that sexy curved stair case in the entry way is just a knockout, a big surprise. there s white pine woodwork, arched doorways, hand-painted co cornice boards throughout the house. i love the arched door wachlt the dining room has 12-foot ceilings and large corner windows. it is a wide room and as long as it is wide. there is the kitchen, a galley kitchen, bright with nicely updated wood cabinets. very simple. the property taxes i want to say are just $1600 a year. you know what that is? $130 a month. thers a spare little cottage that comes with the house all for $144,000. this is an old house. when you look at an older house what do you need to watch out for? you have to look down. you have cracked foundations number one, often wet basements. the biggest surprise to most old home buyers are they find out the old pipes leading to the water within the house are also old and you often have to replace them. it s your expense not the town s. thanks so much. now let s do rochester, new york. nice home near lake ontario. another oldie built in 1918, four bedrooms at $159,900. what people like about rochester is it s right next door to a 155-acre arboretum designed by the same famous guy who designed our central park. look at the front of this house. to my eye it looks like the back of the house. you re right. what a difference it would make if they d just add a small, covered porch to the right-hand corner. it would read entirely differently and improve the value and make it a lot easier to sell. the living room inside has gumwood trim. you wonder what gumwood trim is? it holds the paint better because it gives and takes. it is more expensive to put in but you don t have to paint as often. it has hardwood floors and contemporary fireplace. i like the surrounding book cases. there you have a beautiful room. i like the beamed ceilings, french doors and bay window. the kitchen is frankly a disappointment. i can t believe that kitchen goes with this house. what would you do? very easy improvements. i would put molding on the ceiling and bring the cabinets up to the ceiling and put new doors on them. that s it and it would look entirely different like a modern kitchen. upstairs is a sleeping porch that comes with this old house and also an old clothes chute that still works and there in the back yard you have a deck that s just big enough for a family of four. it looks old fashioned but has lots of privacy. and that big, back yard is nice and flat. needs a little trimming but not a bad house for $159,000. all right. let s head to the lone star state. go to texas, a three-bedroom, two-bath home in austin, priced at $165,000. hot city, austin. everybody loves austin because a lot goes on there. but two important things are going on there right now which is lots of jobs. they have dell computer and a lot of technology companies. this particular house is an impressive house but has the most unusual pale green trim and it sits on of course a big, green lot. that is not everybody s taste. easy to change the color of a house but you have to look at the bones and it s pretty as a picture. the living room has a big bay window. it has a limestone fireplace and lots of natural light. the entire house is flooded with light because you have no neighbors next door to you and every window you look out, in this particular side of the house looks out on a big green belt. you re not paying the taxes but there are no houses so it s kind of your back yard. a real big plus. the kitchen has a tile floor. it has a window over the sink and it also looks out on the green belt which you can t see in this shot but be aware, again, it is very expansive once you get into the kitchen. out back a little patio big enough for a barbecue. macon, georgia, four bedroom home $149,900. right near perry, georgia where my wife is gone. smack in the middle of georgia. this particular house is a house that isn t everyone s taste but it s crying out for good landscaping. it looks lonely on that lot. but when you get inside you ll see it has beautiful rooms, beautiful space. there s a great shot of the dining room. you see that fireplace off on the right? that s a two way fireplace so you have it in both rooms. very luscious. when i looked at the front of this house i thought it was going to look small inside. i almost didn t have a look. but look. that s a nice family room. and the space for family living goes on and on. there s also a big additional family room with a vaulted ceiling. there it is there with built-in book cases. just needs a few books around there. it s got tons of book cases. the kitchen, expensive kitchen. neat as a pin. nothing wrong with this house and a two car garage out back. let s wind up in whites town, indiana, a four-bedroom home, only 2 years old at $194,900. what is good about whitestone it s only 20 minutes from downtown indianapolis so an easy commute for most people who work there. it is a clean home, pretty shutters and neat landscaping and inside an open dining room with extra large windows and trim. you like the color? i don t usually but the fresh white trim kind of saves it. but not good colors for selling the house. it should be painted out white frankly if they want to get more money. there is a great shot of the living room. a little better color. beautiful tv on the wall. big open windows. a very neat house. it almost looks like it s been professionally staged. the kitchen has the old, wooden cabinets. they re old but have been refinished. they look lovely. a double window right there or extra wide window. there is the most peculiar color in a bedroom i have ever seen. wow. it looks a little too taj mahal for me. couldn t imagine sleeping in that room but what the heck. you can see how big that room is and it should sell even despite the paint color. there is the neatest garage i ve ever seen in my life. i don t think they keep a car in it. no. i don t think they even walk in it, just go in and scrub it up and show the neighbors. what the heck. it [ falcon screeches ] this morning in today s kitchen what s for dinner? how about chicken three ways? whether you re in the mood for a soup or a satisfying salad one roasted chicken can go a long way. our guest is chef dave. good to see you thanks for having me. nothing better than good roast chicken and even better making it stretch. i totally agree. we have three exciting ways to have chicken today. first we ll do a roasted chicken. i love to do it in a brine. it s simple and fantastic. why do you like the brine? it takes the seasoning issue out. you have incredible garlic, lemon. it adds a lot of flavor to it. and it makes it look really beautiful as you roast it. the sugar really helps. so after we take it out of the brine, about eight hours. it stays in the refrigerator? yes, for eight hours in the fridge. i like to pull it out, pat it dry. okay. add a little roasted garlic oil just so it has a nice little bit of oil. helps to get a nice color to it. and i add a little bit of this thyme over the top because first of all it smells beautiful and then it gives it a really nice look to it when it comes out of the oven. put it in the oven about 350 degrees for about 35 to 40 minutes. okay. that easy. now when we re done with that, you know, what we like to do at the restaurant in l.a., we make a little chicken broth out of it and we give our guests literally the carcass and a little bit of a fancy chef way of saying carrots, celery, and onion. sounds a little better, like we know what we re doing. add a little herbs to it like that. we cook this for about an hour. you want to skim it to take off a little bit of this sediment coming up. make it nice and clear. what you re left with is this beautiful broth right here. and this is where we go into making the next course of the chicken, a little bit of chicken soup. now everyone loves chicken soup at home right? sure. this is a great way to do it. you have the chicken broth left over from the roasted chicken. right. pour it right in. we like to sweat some of that carrots, celery, and onion. add a little bay leaf. i like to add peas. those are frozen peas? just add frozen peas. get them fresh at the market. a little noodles. the noodles will cook quick. i just add them right on in. then some of the left over pulled chicken. some of these recipes, check it out on my twitter handle at chef david meyers. okay. i always got good stuff coming up. if you re short on time you could get one of those rotisserie chickens. you can totally do a rotisserie chicken and get the in ex-two dishes which is the soup and then a little chicken salad. we finished up with our soup right here. right. which i think is really a great way to have a second meal. then the roasted chicken. you see what i m talking about with the beautiful color from the brine? you have to try this. it s fantastic. very juicy. the brine makes it a lot more special in flavor. isn t it great? fantastic. we have this on our new menu and we re doing a whole new menu and this is one of the new dishes we have. the skin is the best part. isn t it fwraet? i like to finish with a little salad. in france you have a roasted chicken and salad afterwards which is fantastic. i like a little salad with some diced chicken left over from the breast and a little bit of the vegetables and some vinagrette which is great. can you make the broth and freeze that and hold on to it? a great point. i like to take a little left over stock if i have it or the broth. definitely freeze it. use it later. even add it to make a sauce a little better. this looks and smells delicious. nothing like the perfect roast chicken. absolutely. all right. great. and some wine. i believe it is a woody merlot. wow. that would go nice with the roasted chicken. he was a country singer woody merlot. fantastic. thanks so much. thanks, al. coming up, what do we have? kids don t even say thank you for anything any more. if you don t have an attitude of gratitude to begin with, how are you going to have a good attitude about anything else? that s right. that comes down to training. when we talk about discipline, parents tend to think of consequences. discipline really comes from the latin root disciple which is to teach or train. part is training our kids to be gracious and behave in appropriate ways. all those things we want them to do when they re adults. let s pretend everyone has been lax and it s time to get on the horse. what can parents do to rediscipline their children? i was like, okay. let s move on to the strawberry daiquiri topped with whipped cream, 6.5 sugar cubes. a frozen margarita is 539 calories. it looks so deceptive. looks like weak lemonade. for some that s half a day s worth of calories and nine sugar cubes. we like the way you think. i m noticing drinks straight up which have fewer calories and a lot of alcohol. here i say, clients always ask me, what should i drink? the thing you re going to drink the least of. if i have to choose, here are some of my favorites. an ounce of vodka for 96 calories. that much? look at this. you could add club soda, a lime and drink it slower. you say don t mix it with diet drinks. this is very interesting. australian researchers found when people drank vodka with diet soda versus regular soda, the alcohol entered their blood stream faster, 21 minutes versus 36. now i understand. why the don t portion? you re going to overeat because of that, you want to be careful. add a splash of tomato juice or orange juice. don t add regular soda. we have wine. 100 calories for four ounces of wine. you could do two ounces with club soda if you wanted to. here i ve got tequila. you could go straight up with that. 96 calories. we are not a sipping society. we are just not. we re like just bang it back. we are trying to learn to sip. we are banging it back kind of people. we have over here sake which is not just for sushi. 60 calories there versus the 96 in that tequila. and you re less likely to have a hangover. not necessarily. that depends how much you drink. what about beer?
