we re live in aruba, tuesday, september 20th, 2011. captions paid for by nbc-universal television welcome to today on this tuesday morning. i m ac am m ann curry. and i m lester holt. matt lauer is on assignment. it s pretty clear the economy is the big issue in the next presidential election. needless to say the obama administration not happy with ron suskind s new book. suskind quotes one of the president s top advisers as saying we re really home alone there s no adult in charge. we ll talk with the pulitzer prize winning author this morning. a woman took the court in a defense s case. and a woman known as carol brady on the brady bunch but florence henderson lived a much different life. we miss the brady bunch episode. we re not going to miss it this morning, we ll get right to details of that, maybe more than we want to know. we begin with the controversial new book about president obama and the questions over its accuracy. chuck todd joins us, nbc s chief white house correspondent. the president is waking up in new york city this morning and is enjoying the brief respite he ll get with folks on international issues because between the book and the new debt plan he released with i is being met now by republicans with a thud. middle east peace may look more attainable to president obama as he heads to the u.n. than selling republicans on his plans for the economy. i m ready to sign a bill, i have got the pens all ready. reporter: the president laid out a $3 trillion deficit reduction package including $1.5 trillion of new taxes on wealthier americans. i will not support any plan that puts all the burden for closing our deficit on ordinary americans. this is not class warfare. it s math. reporter: but speaker of the house john boehner wasn t buying it. i don t believe that class warfare is leadership and you know we can get into this tax the rich, tax the rich, but that is not the basis for america and it s not going to get our economy going again and it s not going to put people back to work. reporter: senate republican leader mitch mcconnell issued a terse statement saying the president s plan is not a press pi for economic or job growth or meaningful deficit reduction. all of this comes as a new book by ron suskind paints an unflattering picture of the president s leadership on the economy. it quotes peter orszag saying peter we re really home alone, there s no adult in charge, clinton would never have made these mistakes. roehmer told suskind i felt a piece of meat. this felt the classic piece of requirements for a hostile workplace for women. they contest the book saying their words were taken out of context or saying the words were never spoken. timothy geithner was also asked about the book. the reports bear no resemblance to the reality we live together, no resemblance. reporter: the white house is pushing back furiously at author suskind suggesting he lifted part of the book directly from the internet. one passage seems to be lifted almost entirely from wikipedia in the book. based on that i would caution anyone to assume that if you can t get those things right that you suddenly get the broader analysis right. that analysis is wrong. so you can judge for yourself on that charge from the white house. here is the comparison that they are making, it was a description of fannie mae, in confidence inñi 1968 it officiay became a publicly held corporation to remove its debt and related activities from the federal balance sheet. wikipedia, in 1968 it converted to a publicly held corporation to remove its activity and debt from the federal budget. ron suskind joins us to talk about his book, confidence men. did you or did you not lift that passage from which cikipedia? of course not. they re not even the same in the two sentences. the white house should be doing something better on wiki searches on a 500 page book. they ve come up with more. let s get to it one by one. sure, not a problem. you write that the president tried to navigate the economic crisis as he was trying to do this, you write that his authority was systematically undermined or hedged by his seasoned advisers, for example you report that the treasury secretary timothy geithner ignored the president s order to create a plan to do something about citigroup. i m wondering just yesterday geithner said these reports in your book bear no resemblance to the reality. did geithner ignore the president or didn t he? geithner clearly slow walked the president, meaning that he did not move as the president hoped he would, some would say he ignored the president. this is not just reflected in tim geithner s conversation with me. he responded to that, it s all in the book the response but also memos, internal memos in the white house from pete rouse, they didn t like what the president was deciding, they simply ignored it, they buried it bureaucratically and the president responds to that in the interview, doesn t disagree, this was hard, there were difficult decisions, the bureaucracy didn t do what i wanted them to do. ann, almost everything is responded in the book. toward the end everybody was asked about the comments and they responded. let s talk more about the comments, the white house communications director dan feiber told us that the comments with timothy geithner are 100% not true so they are saying they re not true. he is disagree with tim geithner s rendering in confidence men. we talked about 35 minutes through citi. everyone was quoted and sourced on the citibank issue. the issue is whether the white house will respond to whether the president is still getting gamed by his advisers or not. the evidence is that he s not and in her interview, the president, he says i ve grown into the office. he was a president with very little experience, came in, in a crisis but the whole point of the book is the evolution of barack obama to now and the president is quite forceful. in a way saying i m the president, people hoped i would be, and that s part of what the book says. the book also quotes this comment by pete orszag, we heard about it in chuck todd s report, larry summers, former director of the national economic council often relitigated the president s decisions and said we re home alone, there s no adult in charge and clinton would never have made these mistake. in response to your portrayal, larry summers says it s words taken out of context. i have always believe the president led this country with determined, steady and practical advice in the economic area. did summers believe the president was in over his head or didn t he? seems he did. from he and others the start from early 2009 to 2010 these sorts of things were part of the prevailing conversation in the white house. when i asked larry summers about that quote i said look, what did you mean when you said that he offers a comment in confidence men which is more seasoned and less political, he says we were overwhelmed, five times as many problems and not five times as many people. are you saying he spoke this to you after this? i said what did you say, what did you mean? he said look i will say this, we had too many things going on and not enough people and we were overwhelmed. if in fact he said this he was questioning whether the president was in over his head. did he step back from that or say that was exactly what he was feeling at the time? in the book he first said i never said it. i said a lot of people heard you say it. he said here s what i meant when i said such a thing this is what i meant. it s important to note, ann, there was enormous cooperation from the white house and they knew virtually in this book before it came out and had a chance to respond. they say they cooperated with you because they were concerned about the direction you were taking and wanted to make sure that you got it right. let s talk about this one issue because i want to make sure we get to it. this issue is perhaps as sensitive as we said before, the idea the white house was a boy s club. in one story you quote christina roehmer saying i felt like a piece of meat when she was excluded from a piece of meat and anita dun calling the white house a genuinely hostile workplace to women. both women have subsequently denied making these comments. how do you respond to that? everyone is under a great deal of pressure. the fact of the matter is all of them said everything, we have ex-tensive notes and tapes from the book. they were told what would be said next to them and what they said in the books. with anita the washington post this morning confirms the quote. i had to do something i ve never done before but i said it s a special occasion, i let the washington post listen to the tape. they re like there it is clear as a bell. let me get to that what s on tape. i understand what s on tape is the fact that she said if it weren t for the president this place would be in court for a hostile workplace. that s not quite the same as saying it s a hostile work environment. she said if it wasn t for the president it would be a hostile work environment. did you take liberties with that quote? absolutely not. i did as i did with many subjects i called anita back at the end, here is what s going next to your name in the back to. she said can we say looking back rather than in present tense? we talked about that and ultimately the quote is broken down in terms of the core of the quote that she agreed with, and interestingly the comments about the president is throughout the book. it s shown that people felt good about the president. part of why the white house actually pushed me to write about this women s issue in the workplace is they felt the president solved this issue and in large measure the book says the president stepped up here. a key core issue of the book is the president s growth as a boss, as a manager. he had very little experience, sat all of the sudden atop the most complex managerial organism on the planet. that s the kiev lugs, he learned how to be the president, the boss. this is a stumbling block along the way. i ve got to ask you one final question. we did some looking through your book. you make some mistakes, cnbc erin burnett, you call her erin burkett, the unemployment was 8.2%, in fact it was 9.5%, you say the dow dropped 378 february 10th, it dropped 382 points on that day. jay carney agrees if you cannot get these details right then the broader analysis that you subscribe to, that you put forth in this book has got to be judged in accordance with that, has got to be questioned. there are inaccuracies. this is a 500 page in this book. everything in this book is solid as a brick and we have gone through every little thing that they have found, much of it was changed early, the book was pushed through with great effort, and the fact is, is it this book like all the books i ve written is densely sourced and the analysis is picture perfect, everyone in the white house was confronted with this early, they responded in the book, and this is really a portrait, a first portrait of this white house and this president. when this happens, when the curtain is pulled back, they often respond vigorously, they are and that s testimony to the fact that this is really who they are. well it s touched a nerve, not the last we re going to hear about it, ron suskind. thank you so much, the book is called confidence men. it is 7:14, here s lester. the death toll in that crash at an air show and air race in reno, nevada, climbed to at least ten, this as ntsb investigators try to piece together what caused the disaster. george lewis has the latest in reno. good morning. reporter: good morning, lester. it turns out that plane, the galloping ghost had been heavily modified, its wings clipped and engine suped up for speed. did the modifications have anything to do with the cause of the crash? new video has emerged shot by the wilson family from newburgh, oregon, capturing the crash at the point of impact. oh, my god! we re looking right up at the fusela fuselage, meaning i m looking at the prop and right up the fuselage. it s coming in direction for us. reporter: the man who shot this other video, licensed by nbc news, said it appeared to him that the pilot was trying to avoid the crowd. to be honest it s really hard for me to talk about because there was about one to one and a half seconds that he was pointed right at us, i start to flinch, and then he pulls up miraculo miraculously from my family, he pulls up, and misses the bleachers. reporter: the pilot, 74-year-old jimmy leeward had shortened the plane s wing span to boost performance on the racing circuit. he talked about it in this video. i know it will do the video. the systems aren t proven yet. we think they re going to be okay. reporter: but were they okay? this picture appears to show the cockpit empty. a veteran crash investigator tells nbc news there s lots of speculation about whether heavy g forces caused the pilot to blackout or caused his seat to collapse. stay where you are. reporter: in the frantic aftermath of the crash, volunteers rushed in to help. some fueled up an old huey helicopter on display and flew victims to the hospital. one of the patients they transported ed larson. the thing crashes right behind me and all i remember was trying to run, is i see stuff coming, and then that s the last thing i remember. reporter: he had metal fragments in his head, back and legs and he s very grateful to those volunteers. all i saw was a real coordinated effort. reporter: as he and the other injured victims continue to recover, the investigation into the causes of the crash continues. and the ntsb investigators returned to washington with some key components of the plane, their analysis could take months. lester? george lewis in reno this morning. now we get the rest of the morning s news stories from natalie lewis. the military ban on openly gay service members ended with the official repeal of the don t ask, don t tell policy. more than 15,000 members lost their jobs since the law went into effect in 1939. at the stroke of midnight a navy lieutenant celebrated the end of the ban by marrying his long time same-sex partner in vermont in his dress uniform. another delay for the two american hikers jailed as spies in iran. their lawyer was sent away empty handed from court after seeking a second judge s signature on a $1 million bail for freedom deal. that judge was expected to return from vacation today but did not show up in court this morning. a connecticut man who lost his wife and two daughters in a deadly home invasion takes the stand today in the trial for the accused mastermind. nbc s peter alexander is in new haven with more. peter, good morning. reporter: natalie, good morning to you. from the start of this case the defense attorney said what you hear in the courtroom will shake your very confidence in humanity. dr. william petit is expected to take the stand. he survived that deadly rampage but the rest of his family is gone. in court dr. william petit will relive his cool personal nightmare again the brutal murders of his wife jennifer and daughter ss hayley and michaela. the criminals claim they did plan to break into the home and steal. they claim they never intended to kill anyone. they blame stephen hayes for the murders. hayes defense says komerserjevski drew crime pictures of the crime scene. he said years of pent up aggression built up like a ticking time bomb. it will weigh heavily on the minds of the jurors. reporter: his legal defense team tried to block the lone survivor william petit from sitting in the courtroom. that motion denied. dr. petit now faces the beginning of another long and painful trial. it s hard having to go through this, starting all over again? [ coughing continues ] log on to lungusa.org and tell washington: don t weaken clean air protections. . on this tuesday morning, it s the 20th of september, 2011, there are actually just three more official days of summer left, but guess what, here in new york city it already feels a lot like fall has already started. some of these people might need coats, some of them have them. ann curry alongside lester holt, matt it on assignment. thank you, toasty as well. just ahead the murder trial of a florida millionaire accused of shooting and killing his wife, one of the suspects ex-girl friends took the stand for the prosecution. details in a live report coming up. . a warning about who you talk to online. police say a hacker came up with a creative way to get e-mail passwords and used them to steal private and some very personal photos of young women, then he posted them on. porn sites along with the names of the victims. coming up one of the victims will share her stories with us. a sobering story with a message for all of us. paula abdul speaks about her return to reality television and much anticipated reunion with simon cowell when she joins us in studio. and later on florence henderson live on some of the surprising revelations she s making in her new memoir. in aruba police re-enacted the alleged drowning of robyn gardner. nbc s jeff rossen was there. jeff, good morning. reporter: hey, lester, good morning to you. this was interesting to watch, lasted a few hours and it really was a full scale operation, the actors in this re-enactment were actually aruban police officers playing the roles of robyn gardner and the prime suspect who is in prison right now, gary giordano, they wore the same outfits, used the same rental car and went down to the same beach, trying something new just to solve this mystery. gary giordano and robyn gardner, look-alikes arriving for lunch in their rented rav 4, part of a complex re-enactment staged by aruban police guided by this restaurant surveillance video, licensed exclusively by nbc news, investigators acted out their final moments minute by minute. the real robyn and gary left the restaurant in the late afternoon and drove straight to the beach around back, so did the actors, driving the actual suv gary rented toward the water, all the while a team of investigators documenting every move. if you lack witness statements of what has happened, you know we have precious little witnesses, and so we do this to get a clearer picture. reporter: police believe robyn went missing between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. and so investigators wanted to keep this as authentic as possible so it s just after 4:00 and the enactment is under way. soon the action moved to the shoreline, this is where the real mystery begins. giordano claims the couple went snorkeling, he says robyn was pulled under and he ran out to save his own life, no crime committed. the actor claimed giordano went through the motions, following gary s version of events, running out of the water and back toward the restaurant, looking for help. in the surveillance video, the real gary giordano walks up, shirtless in a bathing suit, knocking on doors before leaving. police asked giordano himself to join the re-enactment. he declined. giordano s new defense attorney jose baez spoke with matt here on today. the solicitor general has come out publicly doing this we re doing this to shoot holes in his story. when all else fails and you reach the level of desperation that s what they decide to do. reporter: careful choreography and dozens of investigators and yet robyn is still missing. what really happened on this beach still unclear. we checked with prosecutors just this morning, just about an hour ago to ask them what did you find from this re-enactment? did gary giordano s story check out or not? they don t have the answers yet. we ll check in a little later today and we ll let you know. important to note here, lester, gary giordano remeans in kia prison in abruaruba. that extension is in place and he ll be here quite a while longer and he has not been charged with anything yet. fascinating exercise. jeff rossen thank you very much. 7:34 now, here s ann. the murder trial of a well-known developer in florida accused of killing his own wife is entering its fourth day and this after the defendant s ex-girlfriend testified on monday. nbc s mark potte is outside the courthouse this morning with the latest on this story. hey, mark, good morning. reporter: good morning to you, ann. the jury in this trial here has been hearing from the prosecution which is trying to prove that bob ward willfully shot and killed his wife, and that it was no accident, as he claims. in court 63-year-old developer bob ward lowered his head as a medical examiner described the death of his wife, diane. and what was the cause of death? gunshot wound to the head. were you able to determine the manner of death in. yes. and what was that? homicide. reporter: prosecutors say ward shot and killed his wife during an argument two years ago at their mansion near orlando. it was bob ward that shot her almost dead between the eyes. reporter: the defense claims the shooting was an accident, that the handgun went off as ward tried to rest tell from his wife, who, while drunk and depressed, tried to kill herself. you will see that no crime has been committed by bob ward here. reporter: prosecutors played the tape of bob ward s call to 911 after the shooting. i just shot my wife. you just shot your wife? i shot my wife, yes. is she breathing? no, she s dead. is that for sure? i think so, yes. okay, sir, where is the weapon? it s in the nightstand next to the bed in the master bedroom, and i ll be glad to meet the officers at the front door. reporter: in claiming the shooting was a murder, prosecutors suggest the motive was financial, that ward was distressed over facing bankruptcy. on the witness stand an old girlfriend said ward complained to her two years ago about his wife. he said that his wife spent too much money and that there was a time that he was supposed to meet her at the orlando international airport and she was late because she was having a manicure and a pedicure and he was livid. reporter: ward s oldest daughter mallory said her parents got along well but sometimes drank and did have financial trouble. during the summer month 2009 did the family financial circumstances appear to change? i knew that things weren t as good as they had been. were you aware of the fact your father s business was in bankruptcy? i was. reporter: mallory ward s somber appearance on the witness stand was in stark contrast to her behavior two years ago after her father was jailed on the murder charge. both were recorded joking and making faces at each other, prosecutors say they will not be showing those tapes to the jury. now the prosecution continues this case today as for the defense, there s a lot of speculation here at the courthouse about weather bob ward himself will take the witness stand to testify before the jury but so far, no official word from his lawyers. ann? [ male announcer ] be sure to talk to your doctor before you begin an aspirin regimen. talk to your doctor, and take care of what you have to take care of. it feels like help is never far away.tor, it feels like you re protected against life s little mishaps. it feels like you ll make it home. that s what it feels like to be a member. we re back now at 7:43 with the latest on the casey anthony case and her parents, first interview since the murder trial ended. nbc s kerry sanders is in miami for us. kerry, good morning. reporter: good morning, lester. dr. phil sat with george and cindy anthony for more than nine hours over two days. in the final installment interview he asks some tough questions prompting some frank answers. the defense claimed 2-year-old caylee drowned in the family swimming pool and not only did george anthony know it but he helped casey cover it up. she saw george holding caylee in his arms, she immediately grabbed caylee and began to cry and shortly after george began to yell at her, look what you ve done! your mother will never forgive you and will you go to jail for child neglect for the rest of your chicken life. reporter: cindy said she learned of the drowning of jose baez shortly before the trial. i was hiysterically crying ad i couldn t believe my daughter put us all through it and couldn t believe my daughter ruined her life, she for three years did not come forward and say something. i was never that one to believe a lot of the things like the drowning. i still don t believe that, and i kept on telling her even the day that my son and cindy came back to our house and he told me. i don t believe it, why wait for three years and tell us all this stuff? i didn t believe anything, i ve never believed anything the defense had told me. reporter: the defense claimed casey first told the story of caylee s abduction because she had been telling lies for years. why? the defense alleged because george had been sexually molesting his daughter casey since she was 8 years old. george did you ever touch your daughter inappropriately? no, sir, i did not. ever sexually molest her at any age at any time? back now at 7:49, with the young woman s cautionary tale about keeping your personal and private information personal and private. nbc s ron mott has details. good morning. good morning to you. a young woman from minnesota shared something very intimate with an old boyfriend never imagining where that intimacy would eventually take her. google your name and you might find a link to your facebook or twitter page, hopefully no surprises. but for 20-year-old alisha of suburban minneapolis-st. paul it turns up an eye. there s naked pictures of me on the internet. reporter: a couple of years ago she e mailed her then boyfriend a few riske photos, some showing her topless, photos spread across the internet on porn sites with her real name attached. just awful to me someone would do that to not only just me but so many other girls. the explicit photos of alisha are so widespread the porn site so elusive that the photos and mention of her name cannot be erased. once it gets out on the internet it s not coming back. reporter: police say the ex had nothing to do with sending the pics into cyberspace. how did they get there? in her case someone hacked her e-mail account. a lot of people post their e-mail addresses publicly on their facebook so what he would do is go into the e-mail, click on forgot password. reporter: and strike up a facebook chat with the person pretending to be a friend and casually ask the answer to their e-mail security question, a few key strokes later, another case of identity theft, with a devious sexual twist, 26-year-old timothy norgene, a man from her hometown she s never met is charged with stealing her identity, stealing pictures of her most intimate moments and posting them online with her name for everyone to see. prosecutors claim others have come forward, authorities found hundreds of e-mail addresses on his computer. authorities ask what is the motive? we re seeing hundreds a day. reporter: pete orr say the crimes can inflict permanent damage. these are young girls that forever and ever it could be out there. that s what makes it so egregious. reporter: so egregious alicia says it strained her relationship with her mother and has her worried about her future career prospects. still she says she did nothing wrong by taking or e-mailing the photos, her only regret was not deleting them afterwards. now she wants others to learn from her mistake. people really need to be careful and i just want people to know what can happen when you re not. reporter: private pain, exposed to all. timothy norgene has a pretrial hearing scheduled for november. his attorney did not respond to interview requests. as for motive, prosecutors do not know. we ll switch gears and talk live to paula abdul about her reality reunion with simon cowell. and jane lynch, all coming up after your local news and weather. i got this citi thank yd and started earning loads of points. you got a weather balloon with points? [ coughing continues ] log on to lungusa.org and tell washington: don t weaken clean air protections. that s the way we became the brady bunch that s right, it s 8:36, florence henderson has been entertaining audiences for more than 50 years and now detailing those experiences in the new book life is not a stage. from broadway baby to a lovely lady and beyond. first let s look at how she became a star. here s the story of a lovely lady reporter: to many she s simply known as carol brady. when you come back to earth would you please tell the boys to straighten up their room. sounds like you had fun. reporter: but long before the feathered hairdo, florence henderson was an accomplished actress. as the youngest of ten children, florence carved out a place for herself by singing and dancing. by the age of 20 she was a bona fide broadway star. a decade before the brady bunch florence made tv history as the first ever today show girl alongside david garraway. 40 years later she returned to the nbc family as host of later today. you are not carol brady. she went on to become the first female host of the tonight show and more recently tangoed her way on to the popular show dancing with the stars as the oldest competitor that season. you are having the time of your life. the one day when the lady met this fellow reporter: after more than 50 years on television, florence henderson remains on top and although the groovy days of raising six children are long gone, fans still love florence henderson for portraying carol brady, ranked the number one mom of all-tile. that s the way we became the brady bunch reporter: florence henderson good morning. hi, ann. much of what was in that story people already know, much of what s in this book is what people don t know. that s true. you start to get really clear about your own self. why did you jump into this? they ve been asking you for years to write an autobiography. i always know when i read an autobiography if that person has not been truthful or tried to make themselves look very pure and perfect and so i thought if i m going to do this, i m going to tell the progression of my life, and how i did what i did, warts and all, mistakes and all, choices i made, and let people know that i have a little more dimension than carol brady. and it has been over the course of, i asked permission if i could say this, over the course of 77 years. yes, already just looking at you that s setting the bar, number one, number two you talk about being the youngest of ten kids, being born in a very, very poor family. yes. talk about your father being an alcoholic and sometimes he behaved very inappropriately to you. he did. you know, when he was under the influence, my father was a wonderful man, but when he was drinking, he wasn t such a wonderful man, and you know, in those days i don t even think aa existed, but i always felt a lot of compassion for my father, and a lot of confusion because of that, and because of him. add to that there was a priest who was very inappropriate as well to the girls who were in the parish. yes. and add to that you talk about your unhappiness in your own marriage, you had four kids, you were just talking about, one of them now a grandchild now, going to college, but you were unhappy enough to have affairs, you write about, in your marriage. le with, you know, i think that people don t stray outside the marriage unless there is a problem, or unless they are unhappy, and i married very, very young. i was totally inexperienced. i was a virgin. i never really had a teenage life, and i wasn t happy, and when the pill came in and i was given permission to take the pill, i think i just thought, wow, this is something. i think a lot of women did. but for me, it was, i think it was a growing up period, and i made some poor choices during that time. and this sort of dovetails nicely to this thing you wrote about in your book. nicely? i know exactly where you re going, ann. you wrote about in your book, network morning show the host says florence, i enjoyed your book, great life and wonderful insilgts you share, blah, blah, blah, but i can t stop thinking about your one night stand with late night former new york mayor john lindsay. that s your cue and what you just said. i had worked for john lindsay, very hard, to get him elected, had a lot of respect for him and we were friends. i was in l.a. myself filming the brady bunch and he was out there for some event, i can t remember what it was. anyway, we were friends and he said come back to the hotel and have a drink, and i did, and one thing led to another, he was very convincing, and so that led to the one night stand, which led to something, some little critters that i never knew existed. oh, dear. yes, it s true. oh, dear, and scared me absolutely to death, so i believe in karma in life. i just didn t know it would be so instant, you know? yeah. but this is the thing in talking about all of this stuff, you are really kind of in some ways saying to anyone reading your book that all of this greatness, the thing that we love you about, love so much about you, there was a face in front of the tv, you know, the face on television. yes. but life is not a stage, you re saying. no. you shouldn t think that your life has to be this perfect thing. well, no, no one s life is that perfect and my hope in writing the book because i know there are a lot of people out there who had the same hardships growing up, went through all of these difficult things who made bad choices but my goal was to hopefully inspire those people to know you don t have to be a victim of your environment, your childho childhood. you have the ability to change your life, if you re not happy. it takes courage to be happy. it takes courage to make the changes in your life that would allow to you experience more joy and be more fulfilled. if i ve done that for one person, then it s worth you asking me those questions. exactly right. i think you have done that for more than one person, florence. i hope so. on top of that, this life that you, and overcoming all your odds has led you to some really fantastic experiences. what would you say has been one of the highlights for you? i know you were on the johnny carson show at one point. what were some of the highlights for you in your career as you look back? well, ann, really there have been so many, seeing tony bennett, i think we were on the dean martin show together. we did so many things, i met so many great talents who taught me so much. i loved this business. i love that i m still in it, and that s my goal, and the thing i think that has given me the most satisfaction that i ve been in this business for almost 60 years, very tough business, but i ve been able to manage to retain my sense of humanity. i love people. i still love what i do, and i have no cynicism about life. um-hum, and such complete honesty. yes. i don t know, i feel sort of like i don t know if i should or not but it s sort of out there so i want to know what you want to say about it, there have been some, there has been some reporting about barry williams who played greg, what do you want to say or not about that? i really felt that, you know, the country exploded over this issue, and the whole argument stereotyped gay people but it also stereotyped people in the military, too, as bigots, as you know, behind the times, and i felt that it was just deeper and richer than that but none of us could know about it because nobody was ayou loed to talk about it, so i realized as an actor that i could be a voice for people who weren t allowed to speak for themselves and i went around the country interviewing people to find stories to show a community that was hidden from all of us, but also to show people that break down stereotypes. how did you get them to talk? because they re told, don t ask, don t tell, and right. for those buying into that, how did you get them to come forward and speak? it was very, very dangerous for them. you know, if people knew that they were talking to me, they could have been kicked out, they could lose their benefits and everything, but i think what happens is, when you push people down and push people down, it becomes like a volcano, and human nature, you need to talk. you need an outlet. you need to tell your story, and i was able to, i don t know, they trusted me. you know, what happened was, i have a lot of friends in new york, from all over the country. right. and they know somebody who went to high school with who turns out to be gay and they were dating somebody at the military base say back in iowa. so word of mouth spread. it had to be secret and people in the military were paranoid i was being followed. what was surprising you conducting the interviews? i think what was mostly surprising is how paranoid people were. i met somebody at a cafe i was sitting along the windough and h he said what are you doing here? i can t be seen talking here so i had to go to the back. women told me someone they knew in the military had threatened to take her child away if she didn t turn other people in. oh, my. wow. a lot of horror stories. a lot of horror stories. and we should mention the movie opens today but more than 13,000 service members of course have lost their jobs as a result of don t ask, don t tell. what do you think now happens in this new era, where this ban has been lifted? i think in a way nothing is going to happen, because the straight soldiers have been serving with gay soldiers forever and so it s not going to be a big thing, but for not a big seat change in. but for individuals, they won t have to lock their computer when they leave their desk. they won t have to worry about is somebody going to find this letter to the boyfriend or the girlfriend that reveals something about them. and not lose their jobs because so many did. and their benefits. marc wolf, thanks so much for bringing this to light. don t ask, don t tell opens today in theaters. thank you. coming up next a hardy fall people from bobby flay. first, this is today on nbc. this morning on today s kitchen, what s for dinner? a hardy meal from famed bobby flay. his brand new cookbook, it s been out for two years now. bobby flay s bar american good to see. this is a slow roasting pork. we re making a couple of dishes. this is my restaurant in our neighborhood, you guys always show up for lunch and we love having you. yes. bar american is a celebration of america, plated in a european braserrie style. yes. we re going to make a version of a french onion soup and a rack of pork. okay. we re going to use vidalia onions from georgia. much sweeter. and american onion and if you can t find vidalia, the most monday, walla walla from washington state and also maui. you can start with a lot and you get a little. you let them caramelize in their own natural juices and sugar and put a little bit of sherry and who knows, bourbon. whatever you like. anything like that. and let that cook with a little bit of chicken stock, and a touch of flour, and then the onions and the chicken stock get this beautiful flavor so fresh garlic in there and it starts to look like what you know is french onion soup. only it s thicker. i like to use some briosh and cheddar. we have it under the broil, gets bubbly and this is what people love about french onion soup or in this case the american version, and parsley pesto on top and serve it, fire away. i love it. now let s go with mr. pork. exactly. a lot of times people say i took a pork chop, put it on the grill or saute pan and it was a little tough. what i tell people to do if you have the time, and it doesn t take a long time, 35, 40 minutes, cook the entire rack. this is a pretty big rack, if you want if you wanted to get half of this, that would be totally fine. stay with me. i m all the way with you. we start to sear it in the pan like this. um-hum. we put it into the pan. so you brown it on both sides? exactly. i like to take a glaze, two mustards, dijon, whole grain and molasses. this will caramelize on the outside of the pork, put this in the oven 35 minutes, put a thermometer in there, 155 degrees, let it rest for about 15 minutes and you can slice away. what s the sauce we have? we ll make the sauce right in the pan here quickly, a little bit of jack daniels. i call this the sour sauce. i call this the joe michaels sauce, the director. onion and chicken stock and bring this to the boil, reduce and the beautiful thick sauce down here. wow. what was that all about? are you going to send somebody else in? we re like lenny and squiggy. i like the 9:00 hour, gets more ugly. smells so good. wow. double apple butter so apples, butter, cinnamon, garlic and onions and puree it in the food processor and sour mash sauce. this smells yum. can we start eating now?
