these kind of things go down like this. >> reporter: officer day had been in line to get his police cruisers washed. >> i was first on scene and i observed two males pinned underneath the vehicle. >> reporter: the jeep had emerged from the car wash. the car lurched forward, trapping the men on top of each other underneath the car. it came to rest against a utility pole. officer day scrambled to render first aid. >> i observed one male saying it hurts it hurts, it hurts. and i observed legs sticking out from under the vehicle. >> reporter: bystanders tried to help, but there was only so much they could do. >> we feel sad. we're still in shock about what happened. >> you feel helpless. you can't lift the car. it weighs a lot more than i can lift up. >> he stood above his recruit class. >> reporter: the corporal was proud to have been one of the officer's instructors. >> in this case, there's not much else he could have done right to help these two guys out. unfortunately it's a tragic ending. but he did a fantastic job. >> reporter: investigators will now examine e mechanical condition of the jeep, look at weather conditions and any chemicals that may have been on the pavement. the driver of the car is physically okay, but said to be distraught over this accident. we don't know the identity of the man who was killed. we do know he was an employee here. also an employee, the man who is in critical but stable condition, he is said to be alert and conscious. so hopefully he will survive. reporting live from rockville, andrea mccarren, 9news now. >> all right. thank you, andrea. information about the war has been classified. the book was cleared by the military but then the pentagon decided it didn't like what the book revealed and spent nearly $50,000 to buy the first printing to keep it from readers. it forced him to drop material from the edition now on the shelf. >> i argue that much of the war we're currently engaged in within afghanistan could have been done better. i believe there is information which embarrasses people, a number of people, and i think that's the real issue here. >> reporter: the book looks at how the united states went from winning the war early on. and why the war went off track. despite that, he didn't get permission. this is not about censorship. this is about protecting classified information. the bottom line, it's not referred to the original classification authorities for a proper information security review for the manuscript was provided to the publisher. >> i believe i am a patriot by the fact i'm trying to tell the held the memorial service. police found the man stabbed to death just off wilson boulevard a year ago today. so far, though, no arrests have been made. officers passed out flyers to people tonight in hopes of getting new leads in this old case. tonight we know how a fashion designer was killed. she was strangled and drowned in a bathtub in a new york city hotel. it's the tragic end to what had been a local girl makes good story. cachay was found dead three weeks ago in a manhattan hotel room. her boyfriend has been arrested. a controversy over a holiday sign. their homeowners association sent them a letter on christmas day ordering them to take down a sign that read happy birthday, jesus. no signs except real estate or security signs are allowed in the development and it gave them 15 days to comply. well, this story, as you might imagine, has been getting a lot of reaction on our facebook page. melissa stanford says i think it's completely ridiculous. karla matthews agrees and says i'm sorry did america decide the whole free speech thing was a silly thing after all. i missed the memo. but another one posted it's a sign. they broke the rules. and mike fairy points out in any link. an update now on the controversial textbooks being used in virginia. historians have found even more errors in the social studies textbook known as our virginia past and present. the state department of education ordered the review of the textbooks after they discovered that the book claimed thousands of black soldiers fought for the confederacy during the civil war, a disputed claim at best. now they say the book has the wrong number of states in the confederacy and the wrong year for the start of world war i. governor bob mcdonald has ordered a few review of the state's textbook review process. new tonight, rescue teams have found a woman buried beneath the rubble of a furniture store. these are live pictures of the scene coming to us from wayne, michigan. this is near detroit. a gas explosion leveled the store. as you can see, there is almost nothing left. three people were inside. just a short time ago, the body of the store secretary was quickly rushed to the hospital. no word yet on her condition. the owner was critically injured. >> i said, oh, my god, there's an explosion. we ran outside and called 911. >> right now crews are still on the scene going through the rubble brick by brick just to make sure nobody else could be trapped. they say they'll work all the way through the night and beyond. whatever it takes. also right now, thousands in california are bracing for another major storm. today's heavy rain flooded streets and buried highways, like this one in orange county east of la. homes were overrun by mud slides. despite the best efforts of homeowners and volunteers who piled up thousands of sandbags to keep the mud at bay. this woman's house had 2-3 feet of mud on the floors. >> this is a difficult time for a lot of people. and i am still so very lucky. >> so far at least one person has died because of the rain storms. a woman was killed when a tree fell on to her cabin at a nature preserve north of san francisco. a new video tonight from the ski lift accident. now, this one comes our way from a skiers helmet cam. he was sitting on the lift just seconds after the accident happened. and as you can see, there are folks lying in the snow right down there underneath. pretty scary stuff. five chairs came tumbling down. they were 30 feet up. and they injured about eight people. thousands of other skiers were stranded on the cold lift for hours. state inspectors say the wind, which was kicking up around 40 miles an hour, did play a role. but they're not ruling out other factors either. well, no winds here, but the clouds are moving in. we'll look at the thursday wakeup weather. increasing clouds in the 30s here in dc metro area by 5:00 tomorrow morning. other areas in the 20s. warmer weather coming this way. [ screaming ] >> we're used to kids doing this. but what about adults? why some thrownups throw temper tantrums. that story coming up. hello. i'm sergeant first class steve markowski wishing a happy holiday to my families in montgomery county and of course my colleagues and friends at nih. happy holidays. see you soon. tonight two teenagers are behind bars accused in a deadly robbery. police say back in august, a 17-year-old and 18 -year-old and a third man held up a 7-11. a man working at the time tried to run away. that's when one of the men shot and killed him. the third suspect has not been identified. both teens have been charged with murder. they've also been charged in a robbery at a pizza shop back in november. when times are tough, you find out who your friends are. you pull up in your driveway to find out a gas leak explosion has literally blown your home to bits. -- literally blown your home to bits. like i said, that is when you find out who your friends are. it turns out, they're all your neighbors. even ones you've never met. and they're rallying around this family. they've donated cash, clothes, gift cards and trying to drum up even more support. >> all we can say is thank you very much for all your support and help. >> the family plans to move into a rental house next week but some day they're hoping to rebuild so they can stay in the neighborhood that has supported them. here is a story that made a big splash in the health headlines today. what it really means for all you guys out there, that's a question. a new study points to a surprising risk factor for prostate cancer. the length of a man's finger. longer ring finger, morest risk. it all boils down to male hormones in the womb. it can affect finger length. now, in younger men, derek, what they're saying when prostate cancer is really fueled by hormones and more aggressive, maybe this is a way doctors could look for guys who are at higher risk and do some more screening. >> okay. i know every guy out there now is looking at his hands trying to figure out i've got the long ring finger. so how worried should i be here? >> let me be honest on this one. you can look at this. but there are far more established risk factors that we know make a difference. family history. did your dad have prostate cancer. other male relatives. also this is more aggressive in in african-american men and often caused later. that is the discussion to have with your doctor. >> psa test. always important. thank you. walk softly and carry a big stick and maybe even rob a convenient store. at least that's what one crook decided was a good idea. look at this guy. he runs into the store. he has this huge long stick. he starts to attack the store clerk. the store clerk grabs a hammer. tries to defend himself. the guy jumps over, knocks him to the ground, then manages to grab the cash and run out the door. thankfully that employee, though it looks like he took a few blows was not seriously hurt. if you have any information, call the cops on stick man. we have all heard about the terrible twos, the period where children become extremely difficult. >> you've heard about this. >> what about when the terrible twos become terrible 20s. >> we're talking about adults behaving badly, and christine johnson takes a look at instances caught on tape and get some advice about what to do about that grownup anger. >> you do it. [ screaming ] >> reporter: childn throwing temper tantrums. but what if it's not your child pitching a fit but your spouse or friend? having an adult temper tantrum. >> i'm a yeller for sure. >> reporter: 22-year-old alexander lasalle se knows what it's like. >> i get hot. i just start shaking. >> reporter: but what really sets him off? >> simple things such as going to a supermarket and in the ten item or less line you see someone with 50 items. >> reporter: it's enough to get everyone hot on the counter. so what makes a person react like this? >> people who have repeated temper tantrums, okay, can blow up on other people do that because they can. >> reporter: a doctor chairman of psychiatry says for anyone nearby it can be very upsetting. he says adult temper-tantrums are no different than that of children. they're all about control. >> maybe they have a spouse that would allow them to behave like this. >> reporter: it's often exhibited by professionals, professionals players, that don't think the rules apply to them. or a supermodel who after several public outbursts was ordered to undergo anger management classes and form community services. and remember this recording of alec baldwin berating his daughter over the phone. >> i am going to get on a plane and i'm going to come out there for the day and i'm going to straighten your [ bleep ] out. >> reporter: but you must reiterate this type of behavior won't be tolerated. >> they do it again and again. they'll continue to do it unless there are consequences. will. >> if you're upset, you're upset. what can you do. it's an emotion. you'll get over it. but if that's how you feel, let it out and move on. >> well, ever have one of those days when nothing goes your way. you forget where you buried the bone. and then this happens. this german shepherd's name is rebel. he might have been taking some other critter when he stuck his head through a hole in the wall and then he found out the hard way it was easy to get it in here, now i can't get it out. well, the neighbor heard poor rebel whimpering so he called 911. animal control got there a half-hour later. it took them a half-hour to get thim out. one office -- him out. one officer working from the front, another behind. >> that is a hard day. >> dogs learn from things like that. >> they do. all right. now, anybody with a shred of decency can feel sympathy for the dog. >> now, our mascot, his reaction, ma ny cal laughter -- meniacal laughter. tonight. some clouds moving. you guys are still smiling. they seem speechless. >> that was good. >> yes. and so basically temperatures right now mid 30s here at reagan national. colder, though, in leesburg at 27. martinsburg in the mid 20s. and these temperatures reagan national i think is going to get down to the low 30s. not in the 20s. clouds moving in, though, for tomorrow. it should stay dry even though we can see a little sprinkle here and there. milder temperatures coming this way. and are we looking at a wet new years? we'll take a look at that in our seven-day forecast. thursday morning for tomorrow, mostly cloudy. calm winds but still cold. temperatures in the 30s in the dc-metro area. outside in the suburbs, 20s. look for east winds at five miles an hour. afternoon, mostly cloudy. limited sun but still seasonal. 35-40 degrees. winds out of the south at five miles per hour. right now the temperature is just to the west of us look at national 40s. memphis in the 50s. and so some of that warmer air will be coming up this way thanks to the southerly breeze by tomorrow and especially on friday. we had this ridge of high pressure building in. and with that we'll see more sunshine by friday. a little bit of clearing. but for tomorrow, the high pressure will allow us to stay dry tomorrow. and then that southerly breeze will come on in this way and bring us warmer air mass. it will warm things up especially by friday. here is your future cast. take a look here. so for thursday overnight, we're talking about clouds moving in by the morning thursday we'll have showers maybe to the south of us from charlottesville into richmond. dc area should be staying dry at this point, even though some models are saying little sprinkles. friday partial clearing to sunny condition. three day forecast partly sunny skies. 42. friday slightly warmer. 51. saturday look at that temperature 56 degrees. well above average. here is your seven-day forecast. mild for friday and saturday. dry for new year's eve. so party goers, have fun. get out the outfits, lady. and then for monday, tuesday, wednesday, we're looking at temperatures in the 40s. well above that friday and
