Best games of 2023

As the curtain closes on 2023, Sunderland Women sit third in the Barclays Women’s Championship. After finishing 11th last season with 18 points, the Lasses have already eclipsed that total after 12 games, accumulating 22 points and holding the strongest defence in the division. Here, we look at some of the highlights from the year, with Mel Reay’s side picking up some huge results and putting in some big performances. SAFC Women 3-2 Durham Women, January 15 The highly-anticipated River Wear Derby for the first league game of 2023, the Lasses went 1-0 down after Sarah Wilson gave the Wildcats the lead at Eppleton. After signing from Durham in January, Liz Ejupi equalised on her debut for Sunderland to make it all-square going into half-time. Durham took the lead again through a Rio Hardy penalty, with the Black Cats levelling again through Abby Holmes in the 82nd minute. Katy Watson entered the pitch late on as a substitute, and quickly became the hero with two minutes to go, latching onto a ball over the top, beating defender and goalkeeper to the ball and sliding her shot under Naoisha McAloon, keeping the spoils and the three points on Wearside. Sheffield United Women 0-1 SAFC Women, September 3 The Lasses secured their first victory of the 2023-24 season, beating the Blades 1-0 at Bramall Lane. Summer signing Mary McAteer scored her first goal for the Club, with Katie Kitching’s cross eventually dropping to the number nine who smashed a volley into the bottom corner. The hosts piled the pressure on, pushing for the equaliser, but the Lasses held firm to keep their second clean sheet in two games. Blackburn Rovers Women 0-3 SAFC Women, December 13 Sunderland claimed their second win in the Continental Tyres League Cup, beating Blackburn at Lancashire FA County Ground. Three teenagers were on the scoresheet, with 18-year-old Katy Watson, 19-year-old Libbi McInnes and 16-year-old Emily Cassap all scoring – a spectacular feat to showcase the strong pathway within the Club. Watson opened the scoring in the first half, with Cassap and McInnes both netting their first senior goals for the Club as the Black Cats moved up to second in the group, just behind Aston Villa. Heading into 2024, the Black Cats are one point off top in the league, sit second in the Conti Cup with a game against Aston Villa to decide the winner, and are into the fourth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup, taking on Southampton FC Women on January 14 at Eppleton.
