Gulf grows between GOP's McConnell, McCarthy

Those dynamics have created a rare and growing rift between the top GOP leaders across chambers at the very moment when Republicans are trying to unite against the ambitious legislative agenda of the new Democratic president, Joe Biden

Both the Greene and Cheney issues have created migraines for McCarthy, a close Trump ally caught between the House Republicans still defending the former president following the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and those warning that only a clean break from the mercurial Trump will save the Republican Party from devouring itself.
McConnell’s extraordinary decision to insert himself into those debates — and to do it so aggressively — not only places him squarely in the latter camp, but also applies enormous pressure on McCarthy to join him there. And McConnell is hardly alone; other top Senate Republican voices are also seeking to shift the party’s focus away from its more fringe elements, represented by Greene, and back to the institutionalist mindset embodied by Cheney.

GOP lawmaker pushes measure to remove Omar from Foreign Affairs panel

Greene has received backing from former President Trump
However, some Republicans have pushed back on the moves to punish Greene.
Babin, who was among the group of GOP lawmakers who voted in favor of challenging certain Biden electors even after the violent pro-Trump riot at the Capitol, tweeted Tuesday evening that he planned on offering an amendment to remove Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee in an apparent protest to calls to remove Greene’s committee assignments.

“If the Democrat Majority wants to go down this road, they should start by dealing with their own members who have been at this before and AFTER their election to Congress,” Babin wrote, attaching screenshots of a list of past statements made by Omar.

Press: Memo to McCarthy: 'Cut the crap'

As if that’s not bad enough, Greene’s also accused Muslim members of Congress of being part of an “Islamic invasion of our government” and argued that both the 2018 high school shooting in Parkland, Fla., and the 2017 Las Vegas mass murder were “false flag” operations organized by gun control activists. In perhaps her most outrageous Facebook post (since deleted), she claimed that the 2018 California Camp fire, which claimed 85 lives and destroyed 200,000 structures, was deliberately set by then-Gov. Jerry Brown with Jewish-funded lasers from outer space.
Leader McCarthy, what are you waiting for? If calls for assassinating political leaders and FBI agents is not sufficient cause for you to act, what is?

Pass the rescue bill — with or without Republicans

Against this backdrop, my mood is decidedly anti-unity.

And President Biden’s should be, too. If unity means kowtowing to extremists, that has nothing to do with bringing back an era of comity and bipartisan work he touted on the campaign trail and in his inaugural address.
The definition of unity cannot be working with Republicans who deny reality and put elected officials, as well as everyday Americans, in danger. The definition of unity must be getting things done to improve the greatest number of American lives. That is what Biden was elected to do.
Americans agree. ABC News/IPSOS polling shows that 69 percent approve of Biden’s COVID-19 response and 67 percent approve of Biden’s transition. Over 80 percent support requiring mask wearing, 70 percent support rejoining the World Health Organization (WHO), 65 percent support rejoining the Paris Agreement on climate and 55 percent support reversing the Muslim travel ban.

Member of Senate GOP leadership: Impeaching Trump 'not going to happen'

Blunt added in a separate interview with KSHB, another Missouri TV station, that impeaching Trump was "not going to happen."
Though the House would need to pass articles of impeachment, the Senate would hold the trial and ultimately vote on whether to convict Trump and remove him from office.
Blunt is the highest-ranking Senate Republican to weigh in on calls from a growing number of Democrats for Trump to be impeached after a mob came to the Capitol as lawmakers were counting the Electoral College vote.
Trump has claimed for weeks that the election was "rigged," even as his legal team lost dozens of court challenges and election experts dismissed allegations of widespread voter fraud.

Pelosi responds to Trump: Let's push for $2K checks 'this week'

"Republicans repeatedly refused to say what amount the President wanted for direct checks," Pelosi tweeted, placing the blame on GOP lawmakers. "At last, the President has agreed to $2,000 — Democrats are ready to bring this to the Floor this week by unanimous consent. Let’s do it!"

Harris: 'It is my hope and prayer ... to work across party lines'

“I have to believe that, at some point, reality will set in and that everyone will understand that we need to govern, that the people of our country rely on our government to work and function in a way that Congress works with the executive branch and the White House to solve their problems,” Harris replied. “And that's how we're going to be focused. That's where we're going to focus.”
