Hypersonic boost-glide ARRW missile scheduled to fly this week

By Garrett Reim2021-03-01T23:01:00+00:00
The US Air Force (USAF) plans to flight test its boost-glide AGM-183A Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) this week for the first time.
The service announced its plans late on 26 February, in a panel discussion at the Air Force Association’s Aerospace Warfare Symposium.

“We actually have hardware built and are getting ready for our first booster flight test next week,” said Brigadier General Heath Collins, programme executive officer for weapons and director of the USAF’s armament directorate. “There’s real hardware coming. We’re also getting ready to transition into production within about a year on that programme.”

First, Michael White warned, future tests must not be marred by sloppy mistakes: “If [for example], we forgot how to do a checklist and tighten a pin on a fin, and we lose a flight vehicle because our fin falls off, that’s not acceptable failure. …. Quite frankly, we’ve got a ways to go. I’m not going to be satisfied with the health of the industrial base until we are routinely, successfully flying hypersonic weapons in our prototype development program. And so far we haven’t been able to do that routinely.”

USAF explains why fixed-price contract caused problems for Boeing KC-46A tanker

By Garrett Reim2021-02-26T21:24:00+00:00
The US Air Force (USAF) believes that in hindsight the Boeing KC-46A Pegasus in-flight refuelling tanker, which has been plagued with delays, functionality problems and cost overruns, might have had less problems if it was not on a fixed-price contract.
The service initially believed the tanker, which is based on the Boeing 767 airliner, would be relatively easy to develop and thus there would be low risk for delays. However, 10 years after the contract was first issued to Boeing, the USAF says new technology developed for the KC-46A likely needed additional funding support from the US government to reach a higher level of maturity.

(TNS) — Flying car developer Beta Technologies may begin flights to and from the new Springfield electric vehicle charging station soon, according to the Air Force colonel who oversees his service's exploration of the vehicles.
The company has a charging station at the Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport for electric flying vehicles, also known as "advanced air mobility vehicles" or simply "air taxis." Ground was broken in December at the airport for what is expected to be an air mobility technology simulator.
