Sacramento City Unified starts process to fire middle school teacher who used racial slurs in class

The initiation of the process follows Sacramento City Unified hiring a race and equity liaison to investigate racist incidents. Advocates say the incident itself reflects broader cultural problems in the district that remain unaddressed.

PHOENIX — Juneteenth, a mix between the words June and nineteenth, marks the day that the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom.
Issued by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation stated that all enslaved people in Confederate states “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.” However, the Emancipation Proclamation didn’t immediately take effect and it took over two years for the news to travel to Texas.
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger delivered the news freeing over 250,000 enslaved people in Texas. In the following year on June 19, freedmen in the state held “Jubilee Day,” which later became known as the first official Juneteenth celebration.

NICK EICHER, HOST: And I’m Nick Eicher. First up: living with unrest.
One year ago today, George Floyd died in the custody of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. The death sparked demonstrations around the nation and even the world to call attention to racism and police brutality. Some of those demonstrations devolved into rioting, arson, vandalism, and looting—resulting last year in at least $1 billion in insurance claims and maybe twice that.

First monthly meeting of 2021 held January 21
Celebrated traditions, philosophy and customs weren’t the only connection bringing together Westchester County’s Asian American Advisory Board. The group held its first meeting of the year on January 21, brainstorming ways to help shape policies impacting their community.
Westchester County Executive George Latimer signed off on the creation of the board as a part of his continued dedication to ensuring everyone living here has a voice in County government.
Latimer said: “We want our neighbors to give insight on matters of policy in Westchester. We want to make sure everyone’s voices are heard and the County reflects the robust diversity building communities here.”
