When recruitment to the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) was opened to residents in Britain, thousands of unemployed ex-servicemen joined up.
A substantial pay rise for Irish police from £2 11 shillings to £3 10 shillings per week helped boost recruitment at a time when there were about 167,000 ex-servicemen receiving unemployment benefits in Britain. These British recruits were promptly dubbed the ‘Black and Tans’ because they wore a mixture of British army khaki and RIC bottle-green uniforms — which from a distance looks black.

AudioSwim on song to help achieve fair pay for UAE artists

DUBAI: Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) – a type of digital asset created to track ownership of a virtual item – have become all the rage with their market capitalization shooting up by 1,785 percent this year alone.
Although much of the conversation has been around art, NFTs are now gaining popularity in the music industry too. In March, the American rock band Kings of Leon released their first NFT album, “When You See Yourself,” generating more than $2 million in NFT sales.
Now, label services and music distribution company, AudioSwim, is looking to bring the hype to the UAE and help artists jump on the NFT bandwagon.

Royal Oak veterans press for voters to decide if memorial moves

Royal Oak veterans press for voters to decide if memorial moves
Opponents of plans to move the Royal Oak Veterans Memorial say they have turned in more than 1,000 petition signatures in a bid to put the issue before the city's voters in November.
John Williams, adjutant of American Legion Post # 253 in Royal Oak, said new signatures were submitted to the city clerk’s office this week, adding to 300 other signatures veterans gathered last month on petitions. Five percent of the turnout in the most recent municipal general election — or about 665 votes — is needed to place the initiative on the ballot.

Arizona's U.S. Attorney Michael Bailey Resigns

Matthew Casey/KJZZ
U.S. Attorney Michael Bailey (right) was joined at the news conference by Albert Carter, acting field office director for ICE in Phoenix, (far left) and Scott Brown, special agent in charge of HSI in Arizona, in 2020.
Michael Bailey will step down from his post as Arizona’s U.S. attorney. His two-year tenure had a few surprises.
Bailey was named to the position long before anyone in Arizona had heard of COVID-19.
The virus created opportunities for fraud, and so he worked with state and federal agencies to set up a COVID-19 task force.
Bailey said early scams promised cures for the virus, but the schemes are getting more elaborate.

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Georgia police detectives said a fingerprint match more than 15 years after a killing led them to arrest a man in January in South Carolina for a 2003 killing.
A judge on Friday declined to set bail for Alvin Barfield, 46, refusing arguments from the defense that Barfield, who's charged with murder, was not a flight risk due to his cooperation with detectives.
