Canadian Musicians Show Off Their Favourite Band T-Shirts

Sam Roberts, k-os, DJ Shub, Bad Waitress and more model their best music tees
Published Apr 14, 2021
"Stop wearing T-shirts of bands you don't listen to," some asshole wrote on a cardboard sign and then got 1.5 million likes on Instagram.
People are, of course, free to wear whatever the hell they want, since band T-shirts can serve many functions. Buying music tees puts money in artists' pockets, supports local retailers, and functions as the very bedrock of the concert industry. And, perhaps most importantly, they look cool as hell.
We asked an array of Canadian artists to take photos wearing their favourite band shirts, and they responded by shouting out key influences, waxing nostalgic about memorable live shows, and promoting friends and collaborators. Regardless of the stories behind the shirts, they all share one common denominator — they look awesome.

Alex Porat is making a name for herself in music, one relatable bop at a time. While she got her start with viral YouTube covers (including one noticed by Shawn Mendes!), the Toronto-based artist is now focused on original music. In 2020, she released an *amaze* EP called
“bad at breakups.” Her next single,
“Girlfriend,” drops today.
Girls’ Life caught up with Alex ahead of the song’s release to learn more about “Girlfriend,” her creative process, and what’s next for her this year. Check out the convo & the song below!

This was one of the most unique years we’ve ever lived through. To be honest, it was also one of the worst. But there was still plenty of great Toronto music, and even after our best local albums of the year and all the bonus tracks we threw in at the end, there’s still plenty more where that came from.

The most underrated Canadian songs of 2020

Country singer Orville Peck released his
Show Pony EP in August, showcasing his innate sense of story as well as his desire to challenge the traditional country narrative and to push for an industry that's both inclusive and boundary-breaking. And while tracks like "Summertime" and "Kids" are excellent originals, it's his cover of Bobbie Gentry's 1969 classic, "Fancy," that really stands out. Peck first heard Reba McEntire's cover of the song in the 1990s, and he's incorporated elements of both versions to create his unique spin, altering gender pronouns for a song that's "lyrically from more of a queer perspective," as
