Thursday, 29 July 2021, 12:42 pm
An Auckland Business Chamber survey of over 1000
companies reveals a desperate need for skills at all levels
and a change to the environment that has businesses poaching
talent from each other.
The survey revealed an
immediate need for 4,400 roles in Auckland plus a further
1,300 for construction and about 1,000 for the aged care
sector. 87% of the respondents indicated a shortage of
skills now and in the immediate future. Chamber CEO, Michael

growth and continuity and the situation was delivering some
perverse outcomes.
“What we are seeing is firms
poaching from each other which is creating wage inflation

Business Needs Priority Access To Miq

Tuesday, 27 July 2021, 3:12 pm
No one is arguing with Government’s decision to keep us
safe and keep Delta out but shutting down the trans-Tasman
for the next couple of months does not mean our world should
stop,” he said.
Its time Immigration acknowledged
the important role of business and allocated MIQ slots for
NZ businesses who have personnel who are required offshore
and then need to return, it’s time to acknowledge that for
some NZ businesses to maintain local workforces they need to
be offshore to maintain order levels and supply chains. NZ
has built its economy on international trade and they need

Life In The Fast Lane – Not For Auckland

Tuesday, 25 May 2021, 2:40 pm
Auckland ratepayers will be hit by an average 43 percent
rates rise and 111 percent rise in water costs over 10 years
to help pay for Council’s $31.8 billion infrastructure
spend up to move the city and region into the fast
lane.
“I acknowledge that Council has trimmed back
and achieved savings, and while that is a good start it is
not going to the root of the issue to build a new Auckland
that competes against other cities as an employment,
investment, education, tech and lifestyle hub,” says
Auckland Business Chamber CEO, Michael Barnett. “We know
we need our most basic infrastructure upgraded and renewed

They Are Here So Let Them Stay And Work

Tuesday, 25 May 2021, 12:05 pm
Hospitality, accommodation, retail and tourism
operators’ battle for survival and recovery is being shot
down because they cannot access the workers they need to
open and deliver quality service due to expired holiday and
seasonal work visas.
“The frustration of seeing an
able, willing workforce available but unable to be hired is
untenable,” says Auckland Business Chamber CEO, Michael
Barnett, who receives calls daily from businesses which
cannot hire the skills they need to maintain service
standards and quality experiences.
“It’s common
sense to employ the talent we have and while the big plan is
to bring in wealthy investors, it is often the low paid,

We All Have A Role | Scoop News

Wednesday, 3 March 2021, 4:30 pm
It’s pleasing to have other leaders of business put
their hands up to say they want to play their role in
economic recovery. The priority for small and medium
businesses right now is to know the conditions that will let
Auckland and the country move down alert levels, says
Auckland Business Chamber CEO, Michael Barnett.
“We
all want to get borders open, but with the risk situation
changing daily the SME sector are focussed on the immediate
issues. Tell us the criteria to move Auckland out of Level 3
to get to Level 2 and back to Level 1. Tell us if the
