Full bloom at Tsukuba`s Peony Garden ( Tsukuba Botan En ) now called the Peony Garden Tokyo
My friends and I  had long been planning  to visit the Tsukuba Botan-En (つくば牡丹園), the nationally renowned peony garden located in Tsukuba`s Kukizaki District. Not only were we looking forward to seeing the flowers which bloom there, but we had some free tickets, to boot!   However, because of our schedules and the weather, we just never got around to actually going there- until today, that is.

TsukuBlog | A Different Way of Encountering Japan`s Most Elegant of Everyday Birds- the SHIRASAGI (白鷺)- Egret

The egret rookery along the Sakuragawa River on the Tsuchiura-Tsukuba Border – May

One of my favorite everyday experiences in Tsukuba is catching sight of one or more of this area`s numerous egrets ( SAGI in Japanese)- long-legged and long necked white-plumed wading birds, either stalking their prey in the rice fields or streams or flying elegantly overhead, with their necks tucked in and their long legs trailing behind while their slender wings gracefully propel them across the sky.  It is  something that I never tire of, no matter how often I see it.

TsukuBlog | A Deeper Look at the Fascinating Roots of Carp Streamers (Koi Nobori) and Other Children`s Day (KODOMO NO HI) Traditions

In Ibaraki Prefecture, lovers of traditional Japanese culture usually look forward to the period between mid- April and early May. First there is the excitement of HANAMI ( Cherry blossom parties) and then there are the amazingly extravagant carp streamers ( koi nobori), which are raised up at  the homes of families with boys, to be admired- and photographed.

Sure, you can see plenty of carp streamers ( of a more modest scale) and other childrens Day decorations anywhere you go in Japan in this season. But before May 5th,  there could be no better way of savoring this season than taking a drive or a  bike-ride in the Ibaraki countryside. You are sure to see plenty of this area`s abundant, breathtakingly large and colorful koi nobori waving proudly against the blue sky. It is quite a spectacle!

Azalea (TSUTSUJI, 躑躅) Japan`s Late Spring and Early Summer Regalia – seems more brilliant than ever in 2021

AZALEA BLOOMING IN FRONT OF TSUKUBA`S NIKO HOTEL
Of all the various and numerous flowers which bloom in Japan in late spring and early summer, it is probably the azalea (TSUTSUJI, 躑躅) which most commonly meets the eye – especially in towns and cities. That is because this hardy, flowering evergreen shrub is not only found in private gardens and around homes ( in the form of hedges), but has also been planted extensively in parks, in front of office buildings, hotels, government facilities, and most outstandingly- along roads and highways ( meaning that it must be quite pollution resistant as well).

See the “Handkerchief Tree” (Davidia involucrata) Flutter Like White Doves in the Breeze – at the Tsukuba Botanical Garden
18 April, 2021

Davidia involucrata is named after the man who “discovered” it, and introduced it to the west – the great naturalist (and Catholic missionary in China) Armand David (1826-1900) – who also gave Europe knowledge of the giant panda and Pere David`s deer – along with 63 previously unknown species of animal, 65 previously undescribed species of bird and numerous plants that have never been classified before

With the whole town bursting in spring colors – flowers and blossoms and fresh greenery – azalea, iris, dogwood and all the rest whose name don`t come to  mind at the moment, going to the Botanical Garden might sound like a redundant thing to do.

Wisteria Hysteria- a PURPLE HAZE Over Tsukuba (and most of the rest of Japan)

From  my old house in Konda, Tsukuba, I had a clear view of the Woods. I spend some time each day gazing out over these last remaining wilds of Tsukuba, trying to savor their beauty as often as I could before the bulldozers showed up and cleared them all away. From my window I used to  able to observe how , what were at first small patches of  light violet, would  almost completely take over the thickly foliated forest canopy, which seemed to be enshrouded in a purple haze. This morning, having some time to spare, I took a 3 hour hike in the some of the last remaining Konda woods, those on the site of the ruins of the old Konda Castle ,and most of the time, whether I looked up towards the sky or down on the ground, it was this the same color- FUJI COLOR (fuji-iro ), the color of wisteria, that I saw. The winding vines of these indigenous plants creep up trees as high as they have to go for their flowers to get sufficient sunshine (suffocating many trees in the process), while the petals of these flowers which form in bunches, not unlike those of grapes, are rustled in the wind, and scattered onto the forest floor. With spring`s  loud and constant call-and-response chorus of  birds and the sweet, syrupy smell of the wisteria (藤, fuji) flowers themselves, I all but forget about the modern world (though in fact I am within easy walking distance of Tsukuba Center and the TX train terminal).
