TsukuBlog | The Japanese Language Is Unusually Rich in Words and Expressions Describing Different Kinds Of Rain

It seems only natural to assume that the vocabulary of a particular language should grow to reflect the culture of the people (or peoples) among whom it developed, as well as the natural environment(s) within which it evolved . An example which has been popularly used to illustrate this point has been that the Inuit Peoples (once erroneously referred to as Eskimos), denizens of some of the worlds coldest regions, have numerous different words for snow(with claims of up  to 100 different snow-words having been cited in the past by respectable sources). And though you might be surprised to learn that now scholars have DEBUNKED this example for various reasons (most importantly that there are SEVERAL Inuit languages, and if each one is looked at seperately there seem to be no more words for snow in them than there are in English), I think it is still safe to say that language often DOES reflect environment, history and culture  ( just think- English, which developed in northern climes, has as many expressions for snow as any Inuit Language, certainly many more than do , for example , Thai or Malay).

Celebrating the Season with KOGOMI (fiddleheads) – another one of Japan`s traditionally eaten wild vegetables (sansai, 山菜)
12 April, 2021

Kogomi (fiddleheads) are baby ferns – delicious as tempura or boiled and flavored with soy-sauce etc. (as these were)

KISETSU KAN (季節感)- having a sense of the season, and OSUSO WAKEH (おすそわけ)- sharing with others whatever bounty one might have been blessed with, are two concepts anyone interested in Japanese culture should know – and they both played an important role in the story I`m about to tell you.
It was a fine Saturday morning in mid-April. As I passed by the Kasuga Community Center, not far from the Tsukuba University Hospital, someone ran up to me from behind, calling my name – almost making my heart stop in the process. Spinning around, I saw an old acquaintance of mine, a woman I sometimes run into – and whose name, unfortunately, I never seem able to recall. I DO remember, though, where we first met – at the Omido Temple on Mt. Tsukuba (the remnant of the massive Buddhist complex that long thrived where the Mt. Tsukuba Shrine now stands).- and whenever I do meet her,  she keeps me informed of any events being held there.

Clusters of Long-Headed Poppies (papaver dubium) – NAGAMI HINAGESHI- Create Unfamiliar Roadside Landscapes in Tsukuba in Recent Years
12 April, 2021

Long-headed poppies ( or blind eyes) were first recorded blooming in Japan back in 1961 in Setagaya Ward Tokyo. This year they have sprung up in abundance along Tsukuba`s roads

The annual procession of bloomings and blossomings in Tsukuba (and the rest of Japan, as well) is reassuringly regular. And though in a particular year one species might bloom a few days or even a couple of weeks earlier than average – you can pretty much set your electronic calendar by them. And of course, it is possible to accurately predict what a particular spot will look like at a particular time of year.

YAEZAKURA (八重桜): DOUBLE-FLOWERED CHERRY BLOSSOMS provide a second chance for HANAMI
10 April, 2021
By Avi Landau
In usual years they bloom a week or two after the most common variety of cherry blossom- the SOMEI YOSHINO- has fallen away, long after all the HANAMI (cherry-viewing party) revelry has ended and everyone is all tired out with what the Japanese call HANA TSUKARE- Cherry blossom exhaustion!
Yaezakura in full-bloom at the Bussho ji temple in Arakawaoki. April, 9, 2021) This Jodo Shinshu Temple is interesting in that it has a Burmese style pagoda containing photos and memorabilia of the Imphal Campaign of 1944 in which there nearly 55,000 Japanese and 13,000 British and Indian casualties.

With All The Attention On Cherry Blossoms and Hanami, HANA-MATSURI, The Japanese Celebration Of Buddha`s Birthday On April 8th, Is Often Overlooked These Days (revisited)
8 April, 2021
With cherry blossom revelry down in the valley below, worshippers pour tea (AMACHA) over a TANJO BUTSU – a special Buddha image with one hand pointing up and another one down, used for celebrating April 8th – Buddha`s birthday

Through a break in the cloud-like canopy of cherry blossoms at Ueno park, I spotted it, up above on a hill, at the edge of The Ueno Kiyomizu Temple`s elevated veranda. A small pavilion, bedecked with flowers- and inside a small image of the Buddha. Despite the excited, pulsating throngs of cherry blossom enthusiasts pushing  around me, I stopped for a moment to watch as someone took a dipper and poured a liquid over the little statue`s head. Then, in the middle of HANAMI, I remembered- HANA-MATSURI !

Learning to Stand on CEREMONY (at a young age) at Japanese NYU-GAKU SHIKI (入学式) School Entrance Ceremonies
6 April, 2021

The Japanese school year begins in April – purposely coinciding with the blooming of the cherry blossoms and the first phase of the annual rice cultivation process. Entrance ceremonies at schools and companies are usually held while the cherry trees are in bloom. The sing at the entrance to the elementary school above reads: NYU-GAKU SHIKI (Entrance Ceremony)
This year, however, the blossoms had already fallen away on the day of the the NYU-GAKUSHIKI – giving commemorative photos very different look!

Tara No Me ( タラの芽), the King of Wild Vegetables, Growing Right Under My Nose All these Years!

Once surely an essential part of the struggle for survival and later important for supplementing meager diets, the gathering of, preparation, and especially the EATING of SANSAI (山菜), wild vegetables, is still a popular way for the Japanese to enjoy a sense of the season, whichever one it may be! In fact, the demand for seasonal SANSAI has led to many of them being cultivated by farmers, and subsequently their easy availability at supermarkets ( these are still referred to as wild veggies, however!)
