This disparity has been linked to deficiencies in healthcare access, quality, research, and patient satisfaction among Black patients. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed persistent racial healthcare disparities in a number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Despite the accumulation of data supporting the existence of these disparities, academic medical centers and healthcare organizations have consistently demonstrated a lack of commitment to improving racial diversity by recruiting, supporting, and retaining Black doctors. The recent fall of several committed and talented Black physician-educators has called into question how structural racism in the medical profession works forcibly against any practical effort to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that might mitigate racial healthcare disparities. If the safety and success of Black doctors in the workplace can be so easily disrupted in the course of doing your job for simply being Black, the future of healing racial healthcare disparities and injustices is bleak.
