Readers sound off on disease research, Will Smith and unlicensed vendors

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.: Voicer Eva Maciejewski’s letter representing the Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR) is typical of the rhetoric issued by organizations that lobby for animal experimentation. Responding to my article on Neuralink’s unjustified use of monkeys to develop a brain-computer interface (“Elon Musk, monkeys and our human responsibility,” op-ed, March 14), it ignores the vast volume of work affirming the limitations of animals in achieving human cures.

Readers sound off on brain injuries, animal testing and Fox News casualties

Manhattan: Time can crawl when dealing daily with the often hidden disability of a brain injury (BI). This August marks 25 long years since I became the first survivor, ostensibly so, on reported public record at least, of Con Edison-related negligent “stray” voltage. Mundanely making a call at an unexpectedly short-circuited street-corner payphone site, my brain got horrifically forever-fried.

The US is 'out of step' on primate research with the rest of the world

In the last two years, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) has invested nearly $29 million to breed more monkeys for biomedical research, with an additional $7.5 million to be spent by October. The investments, which include infrastructure improvements at the U.S. National Primate Research ...

The Humane Research and Testing Act seeks to move the U.S. toward more ethical methods of researching human disease that don’t involve animals.

Most Americans generally oppose animal testing — will the U.S. finally ban it?

The life of a mouse or a rat is an unenviable one. Chances are that if you're in the urban wild, you must contend with deadly traps, poisons and broom-wielding humans. If you're a country-dweller, you might have it a bit easier, but then again you may be blown to smithereens by a shotgun or carried off in the sharp talons of a barn owl. Or be poisoned anyway. "The only good mouse is a dead mouse," Australia's deputy prime minister Michael McCormack said recently, as the nation ramped up its war on mice with a plan to poison millions of them in New South Wales.

According to the New York Times, the United States has over 25,000 lab monkeys in 7 primate centers within the country. Scientists have said that monkeys are necessary for testing the coronavirusvaccine, but since China is no longer shipping animals to the United States due to a legal ban, there’s a shortage of available animals. Monkeys can cost $10,000 each and dozens of companies are looking to acquire them. Scientists that work at the facilities in the United States have been pushing for the creation of a “monkey stockpile,” to have enough monkeys needed for animal treatment when necessary. Time and money are the main components necessary for a breeding program, both are in short supply, especially in a pandemic. However, animal rights activists argue that monkeys are not needed for the vaccine or other coronavirus-related research.
