nancy pelosi s husband. deafening silence from brazil s defeated president. no concession from boll sonarob biden, pence, obama, cheney all campaigning for candidates just one week until mid-terms. welcome to our viewers in the united states and around the world. i m christine romans. the man accused of hitting paul pelosi on the head with a hammer has been charged with a long list of state and federal crimes, a among them, assault, attempted murder and attempted kidnapping 467892-year-old david depape confessed he wanted to hold the speaker hostage. yes, it appears as though this was based on his statements and comments that were made in that house during his encounter with mr. pelosi this was politically motivated. they say mr. depape wanted to press mrs. pelosi to, quote, tell the truth. we won t repeat it here, it s not true, except it hinges on the falsehood that paul pelosi was well acquainted with his attacker. there is absolutely no evidence that mr. pelos
That theyre defended. And that, again, this cant be allowed to continue. With regard to the second point, yes, this is something that were very focused on. We want to make sure that no other country or entity tries to take advantage of the situation. The president s been very, very clear about that. He said very starkly that any state or nonstate actor considering that, dont do it. Hes backed that up in a number of ways, including, as i mentioned the other day, deploying our largest Aircraft Carrier battle group to the area. So, thats clearly designed to help ensure that anyone contemplating getting engaged doesnt do it. But beyond that, a big part of my own conversations here throughout this trip, including today, following up the next couple days, is working with other countries to make sure theyre using their own contacts, their own influence, their own relationship to make that case, that no one else would be taking this moment to create chaos in some other place. I should mention,
Season. In previous years, the taliban have escalated their attacks during afghanistans warmer months, but note this. Commanderinchief obama has increased the u. S. Military presence in afghanistan. These new ground deployments, president obama says, are necessary to help train and aid Afghan Security forces. Question will afghanistan ever find civility . Pat buchanan . I dont think the Afghan Government can survive on its own, john. Theyve had tremendous numbers of american troops in there and couldnt defeat the taliban. And now weve got about 9500. I think obama is supposed to bring them down to 5,000 by the end of the year. I dont think thats going to happen. I mean, the taliban are in mel mond, active, blowing things up in kabul. I think what we got here is a situation where the United States is going to have to remain there indefinitely or if we dont i think the taliban may not have the power to take over the whole country but theyve got the ability to knock down that government,
But we have had republicans who were complicit in this weakening as well. Weve had republicans who have stood on this stage today and said they were for a strong america, yet voted this summer in congress to weaken america. Voted to take away tools from our Intelligence Community that permits us to be able to connect the dots and do what president george w. Bush instructed me and the other 93 u. S. Attorneys in january of 2002, to do everything we could under the law to make sure that not another American Life was lost to a terrorist act on american soil. For seven years we did that, and we used those tools directly and constitutionally. And the American People remained safe. As we stand here today, for the First Time Since 9 11 i think were going to have to confront the loss of American Life on american soil to terrorist conduct. Now, theres many people today who are still trying to speculate about what happened in San Bernardino yesterday. Let me tell you as a former prosecutor, from
Negotiations and fracture the coalition, the Effective Coalition that we have. cn÷ i do believe that if the administration thinks that they can conclude an agreement and move on without congress weighing in, however at some point on that agreement thats a bridge too far. It is our right and responsibility to weigh in and i will be anxious to see the administrations formal response to the chairmans proposal and look forward to those discussions as well. Also as a Side Agreement im glad to see the treasury has lessened its load a bit by changing our policy toward cuba and that we arent spending so much time and resources licensing americans to travel to cuba and can free up resources and time and effort to make sure these agreements and the sanctions we currently have and future sanctions if they should be ramped up, that we have the resources to actually do that. I would just say that i would applaud the chairman for putting forth the proposal he has in terms of congress weighing in on
