FARM VISIT: Capacity problems vanish with better weaner care
Pig producer Roy Hannen, based in the south of the Netherlands, likes to think differently. He created additional space inside the pig house simply by increasing the pig flow. Working consistently is an absolute necessity.
When a grower pig house reaches the limits of its capacity, there are 2 main ways this can be overcome. One is to create additional places; the other is to make sure the animals grow faster. Pig producer Roy Hannen, located in Heibloem, Limburg province, the Netherlands, decided to go for the second option. For both visitors as well as himself he has raised the bar considerably and continues to strive for better results with his pigs.

Poultry market outlook recovers, national differences remain
After a very challenging quarter, the outlook for the global poultry industry is gradually improving, although poultry trade remains very competitive.
Rabobank’s latest poultry report notes the industry is facing major challenges due to Covid-19 market disruption, very high and volatile feed prices, avian influenza in the northern hemisphere, and some volatility from nations affected by African Swine Fever.
As nations reopen their foodservice sectors, the poultry industry will start to recover as more than a third of global poultry consumption is linked to this area. Photo: Bert Jansen

PigProgress - When sentiment meets swine fever

Editor of Pig Progress / Topic: Pigs around the world
What would happen if African Swine Fever was found in wild boar in a country full of humans and pigs, like the Netherlands? Pig Progress editor Vincent ter Beek paints the context and just hopes the storm will pass.
There are no more mink farms in the Netherlands. They disappeared in the course of 2020. In 2019, there were 128 mink farms left. The animals were kept for their fur, which after slaughter would mostly be shipped abroad. A few years back, the export of mink skins was estimated at € 154 million.

PoultryWorld - AI outbreak could hit Ukraine's poultry export

AI outbreak could hit Ukraine’s poultry export
The recent HPAI outbreak could hurt Ukraine’s poultry exports, Ukraine’s biggest poultry producer MHP said in a statement on 10 December.
Ukraine has reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic bird flu among backyard birds in Mykolaiv Oblast in the southern part of the country. The follow-up laboratory tests revealed AI RNK of the A1 type H5 subtype, which is contagious to humans. Migrating birds could have been the causative agent source. “We are anxious about the avian influenza outbreak in the Mykolaiv region. We hope, however, that quarantine measures, currently applied in the Kadybyne village, will reduce the risks of possible further transmission of avian influenza in the region. At the same time, we note that MHP does not have production facilities in the Mykolaiv region,” said Iryna Vannykova, spokeswoman for MHP.

PigProgress - Sow numbers in the Netherlands drop by 70,000

Sow numbers in the Netherlands drop by 70,000
In the first 10 months of 2020, the number of sows in the Netherlands came down by roughly 70,000 animals. The reason for that is a so-called ‘remediation’ policy, where producers are invited to be bought out, using subsidies.
The reduction, an estimate by at least 2 artificial insemination companies, mostly took place in July and August, when 50,000 sows were taken out of production. Sows were also taken out of production in November. This brings the total to 75,000 less sows than in January, or an 8% reduction compared to the beginning of the year. There will still be roughly 800,000 sows left in a relatively urbanised and densely populated country, the size of Kentucky.
