A Christian nation? Lessons from Vietnam and China

I am often asked whether I would identify the United States as a “Christian nation.”  I suspect that was the underlying concern when a friend, a 95-year-old World War II veteran, asked if I thought our church should place an American flag along with the Christian flag in our sanctuary.  (He wears an American flag in his lapel; I have one on my license plate.)  I answered his question with stories from teaching law in Vietnam and China.  
A Story from Vietnam
In preparation for teaching a course on “Religion and Law in the US” in Vietnam, I asked a Christian friend who lives in Vietnam what Vietnamese people think of Christianity.  He responded: “They see Jesus as America’s Ho Chi Minh.” You may recall that Ho Chi Minh was the Communist military leader and poet who defeated the existing Vietnamese governments and drove out the French and Americans in the 1940s, 50s, and 60 ....

Puzzle of Evangelicals, Secularists on abortion, Covid, and death

I live in a very secular town and for 40 years have been part of America’s very secular legal academy. During that time, I also have been an evangelical and active in evangelical churches. I travel pretty comfortably in both circles, but at times I am puzzled by the reactions of each group to different issues. Most recently, I have been trying to understand their differing responses to Covid and abortion. Many evangelicals are pro-life on abortion, not on Covid. Secularists generally are pro-life on Covid, not on abortion. (Compare Source and Source). These differences were brought home to me recently by several images when my wife and I drove from the heavily secular Charlottesville, Virginia, to the heavily evangelical Waco, Texas. ....
