Every art form is full of creative people trying to figure out how to make a living while continuing to create. Aspiring writers get jobs with bookstores and publishers. Visual artists work security at museums.
For composer Philip Blackburn, it was a matter of figuring out what would keep him in contact with the new music milieu, the community of adventurous experimenters who take hidebound classical music traditions and forms, and twist them in all sorts of interesting directions.

Kansas City's Classical Connection To The 2021 Grammy Awards

/
A handful of classical artists with Kansas City connections were nominated for the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, with the premiere ceremony held virtually on March 14th.
David Frost won the Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Classical. Among his many albums, he produced the Kansas City Symphony’s “Holst: The Planets and The Perfect Fool,” conducted by Michael Stern, with Reference Recordings.
Stern and The Kansas City Symphony have worked with Frost on multiple projects.
“It’s incredible to have Reference Recordings as our partners-in-crime because they are devoted to the highest standard of recordings,” says Stern. “Hats off to David Frost, hats off to Reference, and of course, to all my friends and colleagues in the Kansas City Symphony.”

WHRO - First-Ever Grammy Award For Music by Classical Composer Ethel Smyth

The world premiere recording of composer Dame Ethel Smyth’s 1930 masterwork,
The Prison, released on Chandos Records, has won the Grammy® Award for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album. The recording is conducted by James Blachly with his Experiential Orchestra and Chorus, featuring soprano Sarah Brailey and bass-baritone Dashon Burton as soloists. The producer is Blanton Alspaugh and Soundmirror. Appropriately given Smyth’s role in the Suffragette movement in England, the August 2020 release date coincided with the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote in the United States. This is the first-ever GRAMMY Award for music by the English composer, who lived from 1858-1944, and struggled her entire career to have her music judged on its merits rather than on the basis of her gender.
