the a5. china has not rolled out any updated boosters, unlike the us and many european countries, although in the uk for example they have been using ba one bivalent which is also very outdated, so i think theissueis also very outdated, so i think the issue is that the virus has mutated substantially and the vaccines currently are just not, the muscular vaccines are just not very good against infection anymore against omicron. they are still good and decent against hospitalisation but china has a very low booster rate especially in the elderly and i think the mucosal vaccines are not rolled out enough, the thing is, masks, n95s masks are still used in china and then edit infection as a variant diagnostic and china isjust not using the ventilation air

different mutations and different variants. in china, where it has not been allowed to spread, are they seeing these variants or are they seeing a more original strain? the original strain is almost extinct. they are seeing different omicron subvariants, bf.7 which is a subtype of ba.5. china has not rolled out en masse any updated boosters, unlike the us and many european countries, although in the uk for example, they have been using ba.i bivalent which is also very outdated. so i think the issue is that the virus has mutated substantially and the vaccines currently are just not, the muscular vaccines are just not very good against infection anymore against omicron. they are still good and decent against hospitalisation but china has a very low booster rate especially in the elderly and i think the mucosal vaccines are not rolled out enough.

they could have on the winter season. what does the analysis say? >> we know that the viruses tend to spread more as the weather gets cooler and dryer. so covid is still around. that's very clear. what this analysis did, this was from the commonwealth fund and yale. they said, look, if you stay at the current booster rate, what's going to happen? and what they expect is that, you know, we'll peak around 1,000 deaths per day again some time over the fall and winter. if we increase eligible to closer to 50%, which is around flu vaccine uptake, then we could potentially save 75,000 lives if we get closer to 80%, 90,000 lives could be saved by the end of march, the end of winter. so these are the numbers out there. it still boggles my mind a little bit we haven't seen more protective measures taking place in the form of boosters.

and then relatebly, if we do get update -- a surge, how will that impact the lather fight against covid? >> sam, thank you so much for having me. i will say these updated boosters, they definitely are a benefit we're going to see in the data, how effective they are. how much more effective remains to be seen. i got my booster shot yesterday because i am concerned about this winter and increasing cases. as you mentioned, the booster rate has been quite sluggish. preliminary numbers show that it's still not significantly increase with these new boosters. i think that just really tells us that, you know, the public health authorities we need to get the message out to people to get boosted. we know that over the last year with boosters, they have shown to reduce the incidents of severe disease, hospitalizations and death. and so unfortunately previously

deaths aren't rising as quickly, and the white house credits the high booster rate, and treatments and testing. and what lies ahead is of greater concern with estimates of 100 million infections by fall or winter. >> if we don't get ahead of this thing, we're going to have a lot of waning immunity this. virus continues to evolve. and we may see a pretty sizable wave of infections, hospitalizations, and deaths this fall and winter. >> and to piggyback on emily's point. growing evidence that people who have had omicron, just a month or two ago, could be getting sick again. from the sub variants. we'll have a lot more on that in the week ahead. still ahead, a long shot makes an historic run in the kentucky derby. and sunday was all about getting even with the nba and nhl playoffs. a lot of highlights next on "way too early." t of highlights xtney t of highlights xtney too early. emerge tremfyant®. with tremfya®,

terms of just geographically and chronologically for omicron, but only has a 19% booster rate, and we know omicron can defeat the others, although lesser effect -- should the u.s. be worried? >> 19% is very low for third vaccine dose. we know from the research in the uk, for example, that it is the third dose that boosts the immunity, pushes it back up. after two days, immunity starts to wane. if you have the third booster dose, it pushes up. it pushes up the immunity up into the 90%. so i think that that is very low level, and it would be very -- i expect public health people across the u.s. are pushing boosters very hard. just as we are in the uk. we have a booster drive in the uk at the current time. really trying to get people who

not, the prime minister has shown leadership throughout. when we look at the emergence of omicron and what happened, as ministers we receive lots of advice notjust on the public health risk, which is hugely important advice, we get advice on what might be the impact of certain measures on the economy, on education, on other health issues, mental health, cancer outcomes, these are all vitally important and what the prime minister has to do, and only pecan can as the head of government, is to balance those and come to a judgment, which is exactly what you did —— as only he can as the head of the government, is to balance those in to a judgment, which is exactly what he did. he focused on boosters, that has been vindicated, if you look at the booster rate in the uk not only
