ruined briar wood elementary school with one of the first responders from the urban search and rescue team john blumenthal. he told me when he arrived he heard from somebody at the front of the school that the entire second grade was trapped. he followed them back to a classroom at the back of the school with all of the walls collapsed, he found 18 children. and two teachers. and both he and the fire chief remarked that it was absolutely remarkable that no one died at briar wood elementary. but when i talked to la donna cobb she said not everything turned out great for her because one of her prek students died in a home away from the school. here is how she reflected on that. >> i feel so bad for those families and can't even imagine if right now instead of hugging my babies i was having to plan their funeral. >> she told me that she was grateful to be alive. she was grateful that her family was alived. but she told me she did
that school with a member of the urban search and rescue team in just a second and show what you it looks like inside. first of all, the story of a briar road elementary school teacher and the terrifying ordeal that she and her entire family went through inside that school. at briar elementary teachers salvaged what think could before the school is demolished. >> i honestly didn't think we were going to make it. cobb and three children barely escaped with their lives. their thoughts are with those at the other school homes where one of her students didn't make it. i feel so bad for those families cafnted even imagine if instead of hugging my babies i was planning their funerals. >> this is some of the classrooms. >> this it is remarkable that there weren't any deaths at briar wood elementary says the fireman as i takes me through the shattered school.
option, then death is the option that the family wants. they want her to it be on death row. >> shepard: she added today that not surprisingly the victim's relatives have having a really hard time. the mayor of toronto does not spoke crack. that's the word from the mayor of toronto. he held a news conference a week after starting -- we started hearing about a video that reportedly shows the mayor inhaling from a glass crack pipe. we have not seen that video ourselves. the mayor, rob ford says -- lawyer had within been advising him not to comment on the whole thing. today he publicly denied using crack and said the media is out to get him. one counselor says he doesn't buy the mayor's story and called for the mayor to resign. the deadly tornado hit two schools several chirp died at plaza towers elementary. now they say it's remarkable that everybody at briar wood elementary survived.
today. about a mile and a half away from plaza towers and also in the tornado's path. john roberts toured what's left of briar wood elementary and tomorrow he will tell us the story of the teacher who got hurt while saving the students' lives. there is breaking news now on fox news channel. we have a verdict in the case of the murder jodi arias. the jury has now decided whether jody -- will recommend that jodi arias lives or dies. there has been a lot going on in that courtroom today. at one point as you know the jurors said we can't come up with a decision. the judge sent them back. we knew that they were convening people in the courtroom now. relatives of the victim have been there and many of the court watchers as well. everyone is in the courtroom now and there is a verdict. so our live coverage begins now of the jodi arias verdict. as you know. we have had very little opportunity to hear specifics this afternoon. but we now know that the verdict is in. we don't yet know what it
you have got the little first graders that come out and literally taught to go down like, this cover their heads and just crouch against the wall? >> correct. we have tornado drills regularly in our schools. there are certain safe areas unfortunately this was a storm and we have had one other storm like this that the the weather man even on the television will say if you are not underground there is a very likely chance you won't survive this storm. we he only had 16 minutes. there is no way to empty a school with almost 500 people in it out in 16 minutes. things that they are working on that day what they wanted to be, their favorite things five things they learned. right before their day was obviously changed a lot. >> lives changed forever. shep? >> shepard: jonathan hunt at plaza towers elementary and moore. we received new video of the video of what briar wood elementary looks like
story goes and the school crashed to the ground around them. cars flew into the classrooms. yet, every single teacher and student and administrator managed to get out of their alive. tonight we are hearing the incredible stories of survive. chief fox report correspondent jonathan hunt is live with us on that. what an impressive bunch. >> extraordinary. we heard so many inspirational stories over the past couple of days but few to me have been as inspiring as that of theresa mosier. she is a fourth grade teacher at briar wood elementary. when the tornado warnings came, in several of the parents of her children rushed to that school, got their kids, took them away. but when the tornado hit, she still had 10 children there. their lives in her hands. here is theresa mosier. >> you take the children up against the inside wall. you have them get down on their knees. put their hands over their head and put their heads, you know, down. and then as we heard it approaching, because you could hear it, it was like
least we believe now 24 additional children did not die. we're also learning a little more about what happened inside that school in briar wood elementary from an a.p. story that came out just a little while ago. as the storm warnings went out, those tornado warnings all the children were taken out of their classrooms at plaza tower, sent to the calf fear i can't to wait for their parents to pick them up. but when the tornado sirens went off, school officials scrambled to get them all into the hallway an area they thought would be a safe place. but one teacher at plaza towers said this hallway is not safe. she grabbed a bunch of kids and took them into the bathroom. when the t. hit the children survived. similar tore the children took them into the hallway it's not safe. took them a few of them and went into the closet. that's one of the reasons why none of the children at briar wood perished. we should point out, shep, neither briar wood nor plaza towers had any kind of safe room or hardened tornado shelter. the students simply had the
as you might suspect. what we can tell you this evening, a couple of things we know. some elementary schools have been hit. i hope you can see there's a school back there. briar wood elementary, the school tells us that everyone, faculty and students are accounted for. search and rescue there be ongoing at that zool through the night. they're setting up a command post right now. we know two more elementary schools were hit. one that is a mile behind me here off to the norse an east. that is tower plaza elementary cool. what we know about that school is this. at least a half a dozen school children drown in that school. they were in the basement and it filled with water and they unfortunately drowned. we are hearing from our affiliate kfor that as many as 30 school children are now
afternoon, no question. we are witnessing an absolutely catastrophic event. and a very sad day for oklahoma and for all of america. as an absolutely unimaginable storm has just devastated this town. kokh, our network news service affiliate and fox affiliate there on scene with live coverage. listen. >> parents are walking several blocks to check on the kids over at briar wood. and we just arrived here. we just parked our cars. so, still gathering information, but we will keep you updated on what everything looks like here in moore throughout the evening. >> briar wood elementary also a concern at this hour. and priscilla is our first one to get into moore at this hour. we will continue to get more live pictures for you and more information as the story develops. at 5:15 we will be talking to bill warren. >> shepard: i have now, as i was able to stop talking for a moment, i have been able to gather a little bit more information.
and intersections spawning to multiple injuries. parents of these children could be seen rushing to the school, dodging downed power lines and scattered debris. it has been a seen of unbelievable chaos. a girl ho a tends briar wood elementary tells kokh television the reporter that her school was trashed. there was simply nothing left there. several children have now been pulled out of the rubble alive in one of these schools. plaza towers elementary school there in moore after the massive tornado hit. rescue workers lifted the kids from the rubble before they were passed down a human chain and taken to it a triage center set up right there in the parking lot of that devastated school, again, southwest of oklahoma city. the roof is gone. the walls had fallen or been mangled. and so many of these students sheltered in place in the halls. these are new pictures that we are just getting in here at fox news channel on the right-hand side of your screen. and live pictures that are coming in from the search and rescue operations.
