한국예술종합학교(한예종) 영상원 영화과의 윤대원 감독이 졸업작품 '매미'로 제74회 칸 국제 영화제 학생 경쟁 부문 '시네파운데이션'에서 2등상을 수상했다.
윤 감독은 15일(현지시간) 칸 영화제가 열리는 팔레 데 페스티발 부뉴엘관에서 열린 시상식에서 시네파운데이션 부문의 2등으로 선정됐으며, 상금 1만1250유로(한화 약 1천500만 원)를 받았다.
'매미'는 서울 남산 소월길에서 몸을 파는 트랜스젠더 창현을 통해 육체에 갇힌 성 정체성을 그리는 17분짜리 단편 영화다. 윤 감독은 소월길을 산책하던 중 친구에게 이곳에 한때 트랜스젠더 매춘이 성행했던 장소가 있다는 이야기를 듣고 영화의 아이디어를 얻었다고 한다. 윤 감독은 "엄청난 작품을 만들었다는 느낌은 전혀 없었다"며 "제가 시도한 아이디어가 조금 괜찮을 수 있겠다는 생각은 했다"고 말했다.
올해는 경쟁 부문에 초청받은 한국 영화가 없기 때문에 윤 감독의 '매미'가 상을 거머쥔 유일한 한국 영화가 됐다.
윤 감독은 원래 애니메이션을 전공했지만 어렸을 때부터 마음 속에 품고 있는 영화의 꿈을 이루기 위해 2013년 한예종에 입학했다. 경기예술고등학교 애니메이션 학과를 다니던 2010년에는 캐나다 오타와 국제애니메이션페스티벌 청소년 부문에서 대상을 받기도 했다. 웹툰 작가 경험도 있는 윤 감독은 애니메이션을 전공한 경력이 영화에서 본질적인 재미를 이야기로 풀어나가는 데 도움이 된다고 전했다.
향후 계획에 대해서 윤 감독은 "장르는 크게 가리지 않지만 이번 '매미'처럼 제가 매력을 느끼는 흥미로운 아이디어를 긴 호흡으로 풀어나가고 싶다"고 밝혔다.
올해 칸 영화제 시네파운데이션 부문에는 전 세계 490개 영화학교에서 1835개 작품을 출품했다. 윤 감독의 '매미'를 포함해 17편이 무대에 올랐다.
