Sierra Teller Ornelas on Making 'Rutherford Falls' and Native Representation

Reginald Cunningham
Sierra Teller Ornelas knows how to tell a story. She proved it over the last five years, working as a writer and producer for revered sitcoms like
Superstore and
Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Now, the Navajo and Mexican American creative is turning to a story close to her heart as co-creator and executive producer of
Rutherford Falls. The sharp new Peacock comedy centers Native characters and challenges what we’ve come to accept as the American narrative.
Ed Helms stars as museum owner Nathan Rutherford, the namesake of a small northeast town where his family has lived for centuries. His unflappable reverence for this legacy makes him sensitive to even the slightest criticism, so when the city votes to move a statue of his ancestor from a dangerous location, he loses it. “It’s history,” Nathan nobly tells the mayor (Dana L. Wilson). “You can’t change history unless you have a time machine.” Meanwhile, his best friend Reagan Wells (Jana Schmieding), a Northwestern grad and member of Minishonka Nation, works at a cultural center attached to a casino owned by Terry (Michael Greyeyes) and longs to bring attention to her people’s legacy in the town.

10 Best Movies 2021 - Best New Films of the Year

Director Myriam Verreault’s Innu drama following a pair of childhood friends (Sharon Ishpatao Fontaine and Yamie Grégoire) whose friendship is tested as their lives evolve in very different ways gives new meaning to the idea that what is specific can be universal. Verreault and co-screenwriter Naomi Fontaine draw audiences into the story of two girls who share the same promise of many their age: to be there for each other forever. Using their tightknit First Nations community as a backdrop to highlight the prevalence of love and familial protection, as well as a proliferation of drugs and abuse, the filmmakers focus on the complex relationship between the young women whose lives—and desires—send them in opposite directions as they grow up. The ardent Shaniss (Grégoire) becomes a mother early in her life and often leans on Mikuan (Fontaine) and her family for support. Meanwhile, Mikuan takes an interest in poetry and falls for a white boy whose mere presence suggests to Shaniss that Mikuan is abandoning her Innu roots. It all leads to a question of loyalty and belonging as the central friendship is tested. It’s not a matter of who’s right or wrong.

How Making Clarice Helped Co-Creator Jenny Lumet Heal

There’s a burst of energy when
Clariceco-creator Jenny Lumet hops onto Zoom for our afternoon conversation about her astute new thriller series, inspired by the indelible heroine from
The Silence of the Lambs. Donning a bright smile, casual shirt, and sun-kissed hair, the New York native has the glow of someone who’s lived in Los Angeles her entire life—not just the last two years. “I've also had, like, nine Diet Cokes, so I'm pretty caffeinated,” she laughs.
Lumet has a lot of joy in her life these days. Hanging behind her are gorgeous black-and-white family photos, including a few of her grandmother, the iconic Lena Horne, and her father, filmmaker Sidney Lumet. Occasionally, we’re interrupted by the sound of one of her children walking up or down the stairs.
