Review: Cantina Barba serves up frills-free tacos

Straightforward. That’s how I’d describe Cantina Barba, from its rustic space to its taco-focused menu.
The space has two patios separated by the indoor space, which doesn’t have much seating. Ordering is done at a walk-up counter.
The order taker recommended the carne asada, smoked pork and papas con rajas tacos, along with the breakfast tacos that are served all day. Other popular choices include the cheeseburger (which is $5) and quesadilla.
I ordered the carne asada and papas con rajas tacos, adding avocado at the recommendation of the employee at the counter. I’m always on the lookout for good breakfast tacos, so I also ordered a chorizo and egg taco with the addition of beans.

Patrons At Texas Mexican Restaurant Threaten To Call ICE Over Mask Rules

By Regina Park
Mar 8, 2021
COVID-19 restrictions will soon be lifted in the state of Texas and business owners are already feeling the effects. Patrons at a Mexican restaurant in Houston threatened to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on workers who wouldn’t take their masks off on the job.
“This has been ongoing through COVID,”
Steven O’Sullivan, one of the owners of Cantina Barba, told
“We’ve had threats of calling ICE,” he said. “I had one guy just stand there and berate one of my bartenders and tell her, ‘You’re an absolute idiot, you don’t know what you’re doing. If you think these masks are going to save your life, you’re stupid,’” O’Sullivan added. “Nobody wants to deal with that stuff.”

When the coronavirus pandemic hit and restaurant owners faced difficult decisions, the Richards family that owns Picos, a Mexican restaurant in Houston, quickly adapted to continue sharing their Latin cuisine - from selling to-go margarita kits to stationing a mariachi band at curbside pickup.
This week, after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, said Tuesday that he would rescind the statewide mask mandate while the vast majority of residents remain unvaccinated, the tough choice to enforce public health guidance fell to business owners, and Picos announced it would continue requiring masks. But, after such a challenging year, the reaction to their decision was disheartening, co-owner Monica Richards said: Several people sent hateful messages through social media and called the restaurant, threatening to report staff to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
