hey, rob. >> reporter: hi, david. this storm system really organizing over the central u.s. we've had a tornado on the ground in indiana. wind damage in illinois. the front all the way down to the gulf coast. there you see it, pressing up over the appalachians tonight. we do have a severe thunderstorm watch out for parts of the carolinas. these will weaken some what overnight and refire tomorrow afternoon. look at this, right around 5:00 travel time, all along i-95, d.c. to new york. really the danger zone is going to be from charleston all the way through philadelphia. stormy start to this holiday weekend. david? >> rob, thank you. when we come back here tonight, paying tribute to a well-known actor.

carolina coast. and in south carolina, they already reversed the flow on i-26 from charleston all the way to column columbia. every lane heading westbound so people can evacuate the coast of south carolina. the storm dorian obviously doing worst damage down in the bahamas where it hirst hit as a category 5 with 180 mile-per-hour plus hour winds and 220 plus mile-per-hour gusts. and we have seen now ariel aerit footage from the bahamas devastating. the destructive force of this storm cannot be underestimated. certainly down there it wiped out entire communities, buried many homes and businesses under water. therthey are still suffering down there. the coast guard made runs today with mh 60 jacques helicopter. jayhawk helicopter. get people out. we still are hearing five
charleston. a friend sent me pictures from the charleston battery. waters coming over there. savannah the highest level you've seen. last year in matthew, there was water in homes in savannah. we could do that again today. pictures from jacksonville where we're under the flood emergency the rest of the afternoon. there are water rescues taking place and they just expanded the flood emergency all the way down the st. john's river basin. you can leave the pictures up on half the screen and i'll show you this. there's the storm circulation. the reason we're an still dealing, the winds go 415 miles out into the atlantic. that is piling water on the coast. it's a huge circulation. even though the storm is heading into georgia, why we're still dealing with problems in the areas of the east. the areas in red flash flood warnings from charleston all the way into savannah including
columbia, south carolina. here is a look at the current radar. more rain is continuing to flow over the same spots. that is why we have such problems with all of the flooding because now you're starting to worry about the drainage that cannot hold all of this water that is coming in. also with the ground completely saturated as it is, it only takes 20, 30 miles per hour winds to knock trees down. that is also why we are starting to see a lot of the power outages begin to go up. forecasted rainfall, again, another 6 to 10 inches of rain expected in parts of charleston all the way up towards wilmington and the windy conditions in the northeast, take a look. 62-mile-an-hour wind in cape may. this is an impressive overall storm all up and down the east coast whether it's the wind or the rain that's a factor. >> allison chinchar, thank you so much. a new clue this morning in a desperate search for missing cargo ship with 28 americans on board. more than 48 hours since the ship disappeared while sailing
>> jose, the wall street journal called the crisis on the border a god send to gop nativists. i do not know whether this crisis has been a god sent to the gop. breaking news this hour, 33 republican members of congress have sent a letter to president obama asking him for -- to publicly commit that newly arrived illegal immigrants will not receive legal status or deferred action. i don't know. i don't know if this places the republican party in -- i think it places them in a worse position than perhaps even a few weeks ago when they were just standing in the way of broader reform. >> yeah, alex, thank you. there are so many things to talk about that you've mentioned just in the top of this hour. number one, i certainly hope that in this era of recycling, that the protesters that had signs that we want to be safe had given that to the children that were in those buses because

down in seattle and louisville and high court invalidated section four of the voting rights act of 1965, which was a companion to the civil rights act. and since 2010, 21 states, including almost all of the former confederacy have enacted new voter restrictions which disproportionately affect people of color. 50 years on enforcing the constitutional right to vote, those first seven words of the civil rights act remains a challenge that we've seem less prepared to tackle nearly half a century later. joining me now, charles ogle tree and mark morial. justice roberts in 2007 famously said the way toe stop discrimination on the basis of race is stop discriminating on the basis of race. have we forgotten why we have a civil rights movement in the first place? >> i don't know if we have but chief roberts has forgotten why
>> i think they are incompetent and untrust worthy. we're paying them, they are doing nothing. they did do something, yesterday the ethics committee decided to make it easier to hide the taxpayers money you spend when you take a congressional trip. they need to go and i think they get their butts kicked in november. people are sick of this. they may like or may not like barack obama. there hasn't been a debate about policy a serious debate about policy last six months. and i think that the american people are just disgusted. i'm certainly disgusted with them. i question their patriotism really. we're paying them to do something and they are doing nothing. >> there is the old addage that congress can run against a president. the president is -- obviously not running for re-election, he can't, but democrats can run against the congress in a weird way given how much the face of
