Mass vaccination of the over-50s in Terrassa (Barcelona).
The progress of Spain’s Covid-19 vaccination campaign has sparked a wave of optimism in the country about the future of the pandemic. With a large part of the vulnerable population already inoculated and 14.9 million people (31.4% of the population) with at least one dose of a vaccine in their arms, the experts have no doubt that the main indicators of the epidemiological situation – the incidence rate, hospitalizations and deaths – will fall sharply in the coming months. But group immunity, they warn, will not be achieved this year and right now it is difficult to see whether the world will reach this stage given the threat of new variants and the lack of vaccines to administer to the global population in the medium term.

Coronavirus in Spain: Eight Spanish regions record fewer than 10 Covid deaths in a week | Society

The number of coronavirus deaths being recorded in Spain is finally starting to let up, and some regions are now seeing days go by without a single Covid-19 fatality. According to data from the National Epidemiological Monitoring Network, from April 19 to 25 – the last week with the most consolidated data – eight regions reported fewer than 10 deaths each. Of these, Murcia, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria and La Rioja reported fewer than one fatality a day.
While delays to reporting from the regions could still alter this data, the figures for the following week confirm the trend, and according to Wednesday’s provisional figures from the Health Ministry covering the previous seven days, the improvement in the fatality rate has been consolidated: the vaccination campaign and the fall in transmission due to social restrictions have brought the number of victims down.

Covid-19: As fourth coronavirus wave gains pace in Spain, experts call for tougher restrictions from regions | Society

The fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic is advancing in Spain. While it is moving at different speeds from region to region, the curve of infections is growing in nearly all of the country’s territories – apart from in the Balearic Islands – and the 14-day cumulative number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants now stands at 199, according to the latest Health Ministry report, which was released on Monday. This key data point has risen 21.8% in a week.
Pressure on Spanish hospitals is also rising once more, with more than 10,200 Covid-19 patients currently receiving treatment. What’s more, one in five intensive care unit (ICU) beds is occupied by a coronavirus patient, accounting for a total of 2,161 people. The Health Ministry report also added 197 deaths to the official toll, which now stands at 76,525.

Coronavirus cases in Spain: Spain reports 9,387 Covid-19 deaths in February, the highest monthly figure since the first wave | Society

The epidemiological curve in Spain is still falling, but this third wave is leaving behind significant damage: February is now the month with the highest number of Covid-19 deaths since the first wave of the pandemic last spring. And that is with three more coronavirus reports still to come from the central Health Ministry before the month is out.
According to the latest figures, released on Wednesday evening, there have been 9,387 Covid-19 deaths in Spain in February so far, with 389 added to the overall death toll in the last report.
The good news is that the 14-day cumulative number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants came in at 218, having fallen below the “extreme risk” level of 250 earlier in the week. All of Spain’s regions, apart from Madrid, the Basque Country and the North African exclave cities of Ceuta and Melilla, are now under that 250-case level according to Wednesday’s report.
