He is the great professor of Civil War History at the university of georgia. Let me say i have a few rules i live by in our field, this is one of them. Anything that Stephen Berry writes ive got to read. He always brings to his research incredible, beautiful writing with rich insights. We like him so much. His work is so good. You want to be jealous but you cant, steve is a wonderful guy. A fantastic teacher as well. I have sent many students to work with steve over the years. And at university of georgia, he is not only a prolific scholar, he has written or edited six books. My favorite is all that makes a man, love ambition in the civil war south. This is a panel on the book civil war places. We have a couple copies up here that people will be thumbing through. And were going to have something very unusual for me, were going to have a screen behind us. He is smiling because i dont do anything this venturesome. To have actual images of when i give a talk. This is something of a departure for me. Heres how the structure is going to work. Im going give very brief introductions for the four people who are sitting here at the table with me and ill do all of them at once. And then im going to go in the order in which these images are going to appear and have each of our Panel Members talk about why they decided to be part of this project. And why they selected the image that they selected. Theyll talk for a little while about the image and then well see where the conversation goes after that. Youll be able to have questions. Earls. I can honestly say one of his books i read at graduate school is one of the very finest and, in fact, one of the very first books to explore soldier motivation and ideology. It is an outstanding book. He has done many others that include pickens charge, rightful musket in the civil war. His book on braxton brag as well. Im not sure youll love him after you read earls book. It is a fair and very well researched and deeply analytical look at that controversial general. Earl has won a number of awards, including the tom watson prize for his work on civil war tactics, something he will be speaking about today. And, i should note, that this book, fighting for atlanta published by the university of North Carolina press that it, in fact, will be his topic. Let me welcome earl hess. With a longtime contributor to cwi, jen murray. Jen murray is currently an assistant teaching assistant professor in the department of history at Oklahoma State university. She is as you know an expert in the civil war and also a specialist in military history in general. She has i would say a full publication resume. Her most important book and most recent is entitled on a great battlefield the making, management, and memory of get Gettysburg National park. Published in 2013 by the university of tennessee press. She is currently working on a i biography of George Gordon meade which will hopefully be publi published in the civil war america series. She is a veteran faculty member here. As a congressional staffer and then moved onto the university of virginia where he studied under gary gallagher, published his dissertation with the university of North Carolina press.
