Thanks to its young and mainly rural population, Africa has avoided the catastrophic coronavirus death tolls seen in the West.
But as the virus silently creeps across the continent, ageing government ministers, officials and social elites in some African countries seem to be succumbing to Covid-19 at an alarming rate.
Sub-Saharan Africa has recorded about 60,000 deaths out of a population of 1.1 billion, about 40,000 deaths less than the UK.

Matt Hancock, the Health Secretary, said he was "up for strengthening" the current border crackdown further, adding that ministers were "looking at that".
There are currently 33 "red list" countries from which foreign travel is banned, and any Britons or UK residents returning from them will be required to quarantine at their own cost in Government-approved hotels, which ministers are aiming to introduce on February 15.
The 33 countries are primarily in southern Africa and South America but also include Portugal, where new border controls with Spain were introduced this week to try to prevent the spread of new variants.

Full border closure will put Britain's food supply in danger because 40 per cent of air freight arrives on passenger planes, a minister has warned.
Robert Courts, the aviation minister, said shutting the borders would threaten the UK's ability to keep freight – which brought in not only food but also personal protective equipment (PPE) critical to hospitals – moving.
