Austin City Council may be ready to end land development code fight

A drawn-out struggle to write new rules that govern land use in Austin ended 2020 the same way it began: with a power-shifting victory for property owners who are resistant to multi-family homes popping up in their single-family neighborhoods.
A pair of game-changing events --- a court judgement against the city in March and an upset in the City Council runoff election in December --- have made it so that neither side in a multi-year fight on the City Council has much of an upper hand right now. That rebalance of power could lead to negotiations heating back up and the council hammering out an agreement in 2021.

Federal officials are investigating allegations of bribery, abuse of office and other crimes involving Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton
Texans pay for Paxton's
abuse of the AG's office
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's suit against Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia to keep those states from casting their electoral votes (was) a pathetically pandering bit of self-promotion. It was not even a 'Hail Mary,' according to constitutional scholars. It disrespects all voters and our election process.
As a Texas taxpayer, however, it's worse for what it represents. This is not a wildcatter frittering away his own funds to drill dry hole after dry hole. Paxton was given a gift of public trust by voters and the grace of God, but has squandered his time on pettiness and abused the AG’s office.

Qmmunity: Make the Yuletide Gay

Celebrate the holigays like a scream queen with Bulimianne (l) and Louisianna (Photo by Corin Smith)
As a friend of Dorothy, it's only a little fitting that one of my most played Xmas songs this season is "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." But seriously, Ms. Judy's lyrical longing for "
Someday soon we all will be together/ If the fates allow" is spot on for how many of us might be feeling. Though we don't celebrate the same traditions, this time of year feels especially fitting for time with lots of loved ones and time to decompress, but right now, that's not the case so much. I, for one, am pretty deflated in the cheer department (and that's not just because I wasted the better part of a Saturday night cringe-LOLing my way through

A sizable chunk of Austin’s enormous Robinson Ranch could become the area’s next major site for mixed-use development.
Commercial real estate company JLL Capital Markets announced on December 17 that it had been tapped to market a 193-acre development site at State Highway 45 North and North MoPac Expressway. This parcel — with about two-thirds the acreage of the Domain complex — is part of the roughly 7,000-acre Robinson Ranch, one of the largest privately owned chunks of undeveloped land in Central Texas. By comparison, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport covers about 4,200 acres.

2020 Top 10s - Ten Key Moments in a Year of Endless Texas Election Drama: Vote Early and Often - News

1) Jan. 13: Red Guards Ambush Heidi Sloan The Democratic Socialists of America organizer and candidate for Congress in the TX-25 Democratic primary was waylaid and threatened by militants associated with the ostensibly defunct Maoist group Red Guards Austin, highlighting stress fractures at the leftmost edge of Austin politics even as the influence of DSA-aligned progressives surged in an increasingly deep-blue Travis County. Sloan would lose her race to the also very progressive Julie Oliver, who set up a rematch with GOP incumbent Roger Williams.
2) Feb. 23: Bernie Sanders Rolls Through Town As Texas found itself a pivotal state in the 2020 presidential primary, candidates with Austin connections, including (one-time UT prof) Elizabeth Warren and (friend of Mayor Adler) Pete Buttigieg, made late swings through town, but none drew a bigger crowd than Sanders, who was widely expected to pick up most of the locally awarded delegates and who, at this point, was the national front-runner before Joe Biden's comeback win in South Carolina. A lot changed in the following week ...

It's Election Night! Time to Count the Last Few Ballots Cast in 2020

Letitica Moreno Caballero are squared off in the district-wide At-Large Place 8.
7:10pm And boom, the early vote in Travis County has dropped. That's an important distinction, because Council D6 also includes precincts in Williamson County that have not reported. In the Travis part of D6, Kelly leads Flannigan by just under 500 votes. out of nearly 7,000 early ballots cast.
in D10, Alter has a 373-vote lead over Virden out of more than 18,700 cast, so ahout 2%.
In the AISD races, Boswell has a solid 54%-46% lead over Littlefield in early voting (471 votes out of more than 5,700 cast), and Caballero and Lugo are basically tied: Caballero leads by 142 votes out of nearly 30,000 cast, so less than half a percentage point.

Mackenzie Kelly Becomes Lone Conservative Voice On Austin City Council After Election Upset Victory

They called her a “toxic reactionary” Nazi. They falsely claimed she was associated with white supremacist groups. They even tried to accuse her of hypocrisy regarding COVID-19 restrictions. Yet, despite the odds, Mackenzie Kelly powered through and won a seat on Austin’s city council for the sixth district.
After incumbent Councilmember Jimmy Flannigan failed to get the required percentage of votes to win re-election on Nov. 3, he faced challenger Mackenzie Kelly in a runoff election that was decided on Tuesday. According to the unofficial numbers, Kelly defeated Flannigan by four points, receiving 52% of the vote to Flannigan’s 48%.
This victory is notable for several reasons: on the day of the general election, Flannigan led Kelly by seven points with 40% of the vote to Kelly’s 33%.
