CSPAN2 David McCraw Truth In Our Times July 14, 2024

Counsel of a newspaper. In fact, i dont know of any precedent for this but david mccraw is not just any deputy general counsel. Hes the newsroom lawyer for the New York Times where he has worked for a decade and a half now. That means he gets to do a lot of interesting and stressfulthings. He gets to defend the times against actual and threatened suits, advise reporters on stories, file suits seeking government documents, hidden from view and work for the release of journalists kidnapped by extremists or detained by hostile governments. As david says in the first chapter of his book truth in our times, its been a hell of a time to be a lawyer for the new yorktimes. David gained notoriety himself after the fall of 2016 in the waning days of the president ial campaign. The times had published an article about two women who said from and groped them. A lawyer for trump to manage our attraction and threatened to sue for libel. David r ....

News and data has not made our world more comprehensivible. Speed and technology is one thing. Context, Something Else all together. For me and my colleagues in the school of journalism, serious journalism, real journalism, the idea of journalism we share with our students begins with the simple idea. It is about being there. Not just to get the story, but to help illuminate places. It is often about reporters crossing frontiers in the hope they can bring light to the stories of people who live in the worlds darker places. Yet these days, this kind of journalism comes at a terrible price. And it is that blunt reality that brings us together tonight. John and diane foley and Terry Anderson can attest firsthand to this brutal truth. We are deeply grateful to them. And to my former colleague, david mccraw, for joining us to share their experiences and thoughts about this hard, n ....

At here is the past of investigative reporting. Well, thank you. Things, despite the makeup of the panel, i think things are changing in the newsrooms, there are a lot of women, africanamericans, hispanics and asians all taking posts of responsibility in all these groups so while we have been behind and not as aggressive as we should have been and be more diverse in our organizations thats very much a top line question. In terms of the topics tackled its a fair point that the people who are in the decisionmaking positions are perhaps not in touch as they should be with some of these other questions, like inequality and race but i think that by and large the main organizations are at least making efforts to address that. Look, its an absolutely excellent point, diversity is important not just for the sake of diversity, because it does give other perspectives on whats the story, and you know, this doesnt speak directly to the issue of women or africanamericans or minorities, but how you ....

Upstate Medical Center blues 18 million a year. Its going to hurt the economy. So i voted to repeal the Affordable Care act. Beyond that we voted for bipartisan support for three free trade agreements that will aid in increasing the number of exports from our district. We have time for rebuttal. What are your thoughts regarding the stimulus act . Maffei i think the recovery act was essential at the time. First of all were lots of small tax cuts that were essential to those families. Secondly, we kept police on the street, kept or teachers to me laid off in our classrooms from blowing up in size. And firefighters. So certainly we had to do something. The thing that i am really confused about, thats bad but there do the right thing on the taxes apparently. But now some of the economy is starting to be fine for millionaires and billionaires. Im doing the wrong thing by asking t ....
