Population decline causing other losses for area

Many federal programs that provide funding are based on state populations. As the population declines, so does the amount of money the state will receive from the program. Bill Oxford | Getty Images/iStockphoto
People are leaving the state, decreasing the population enough that Illinois will see less representation in the federal government until the next census.
But the census also could have several impacts on the local community.
State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer, R-Jacksonville, said the decline in population is a bad thing, but it wasn’t as bad as they predicted it would be.

Gun Control Activists Pin Their Hopes On NRA's Demise

(AP Photo/Mike Stewart File)
A new analysis by a pair of gun control advocates doesn’t offer much hope for fans of gun bans, though sociologists Eulalie Laschever and David S. Meyer do their best to put a positive spin on their research in a piece published at the
Washington Post. The pair say they’ve “tracked gun politics in the United States from 1945 to 2015,” and based on their research they say they “do not expect Congress to pass new national legislation” anytime soon.
Despite that, the headline of the
WaPo piece screams that “now might be different.” Why? The academics claim that the NRA’s legal woes could spell the death of the Second Amendment movement.

Book description
The Israeli settler movement plays a key role in Israeli politics and the Arab-Israeli conflict, yet very few empirical studies of the movement exist. This is the first in-depth examination of the contemporary Israeli settler movement from a structural (rather than purely historical or political) perspective, and one of the few studies to focus on a longstanding, radical right-wing social movement in a non-western political context. A trailblazing systematic assessment of the role of the settler movement in Israeli politics writ large, as well as in relation to Israel's policy towards the West Bank, this book analyzes the movement both as a whole and as a combination of its parts (i.e. branches) - institutions, networks, and individuals. Whether you are a student, researcher, or policymaker, this book offers a comprehensive and original theoretical framework alongside a rich empirical analysis which illuminates social movements in general, and the Israeli settler movement in particular.

House Bill 724 — sponsored by Curtis J. Tarver, D-Chicago — would require lawmakers to attend and successfully complete a police training course administered by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board that would give them the power to arrest anyone breaking a law or violating an ordinance of the state. It also would allow lawmakers to detain a person overnight in a safe place until they can be brought before a court.James C. Hooper | Getty Images
A bill making its way through the Illinois legislature would require Illinois lawmakers — both senators and representatives — to become keepers of the peace, giving them limited policing power.

Cold snap wanes, but massive bills in offing for communities dealing with gas price spike

Cold snap wanes, but massive bills in offing for communities dealing with gas price spike

WINCHESTER — Although some west-central Illinois communities were able to lower natural gas use by urging residents to conserve during this month’s cold snap, they are worried about what will happen when bills come due.
Places like Winchester can see higher prices because of variable rates in their contracts with municipal and cooperative systems. Companies regulated by the Illinois Commerce Commission, such as Ameren Illinois and Illinois Peoples Gas, buy natural gas in advance of winter to ensure they are less prone to sudden increases in wholesale rates.
