The sun shined bright at exactly 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon when a brown curtain dropped from the side of the Arabic American and Chaldean Council's 55 W. 7 Mile Road building in Detroit to unveil a towering Black man in a blue firefighter’s Class A uniform.
Detroit Fire Capt. Franklin Williams, covered with images of Detroit first responders and front line workers,  looked out from the wall to face his former workplace: Engine 44, Ladder 18.
The mural, prominently featuring Williams as the first Detroit firefighter to die from COVID-19, was unveiled the day before Memorial Day — a day used to honor service members who died in the line of duty — to honor the memory of front-line workers who died from COVID-19.

DETROIT – There have been two separate drunk driving incidents involving Detroit firefighters recently.
The first incident happened on Feb. 21 when the operator of Squad 6, a heavy rescue engine, smashed into a parked car on Detroit’s east side while responding to a call about a woman who was sick. The firefighter was screened for alcohol and the department said he tested over the legal limit.
Sources said that that firefighter and his crew were at a retirement and promotions party at Engine House 50 when the call came in. Sources said that alcohol was being consumed at that party.

While driving one of the department's rigs, one firefighter struck the parked car of the woman in need of medical attention.
When police responded to the incident, they checked the firefighter's blood alcohol level, which came back as a .108, well above the legal limit.
The drunken night began as a dinner celebrating promotions within the department. At Engine 50 Ladder 23 on Houston Whittier on Detroit's east side, sources said multiple fire companies had attended the party and an email shows a captain who was off-duty at the time was taking beer orders for those who were on duty.
