Spain, Greece aspire to be engine for strong Mediterranean in EU

Spain, Greece aspire to be engine for strong Mediterranean in EU
3 minutes read
Athens, May 10 (EFE).- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his Greek counterpart and host, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on Monday in Athens cemented an alliance based on their two countries’ common interests in the European Union and designed to transform them jointly into the “engine” that will achieve a strong Mediterranean region in the European community.
“Without a strong and united Mediterranean, there is no Europe,” said Sanchez at the meeting with Mitsotakis before the two leaders participated in the Delphi Economic Forum.
This was the first time the pair had met in the Greek capital although they already had gotten to know each other at numerous summits – the most recent of them last weekend in Oporto – and their aim was to strengthen the good relationship that they say exists between their governments despite the fact that the two men belong to different political groupings.

Micheál Martin says international travel could be possible by "latter part of summer" | JOE is the voice of Irish people at home and abroad

"Europe is pressing ahead with it in terms of the technology side of it," he said.
"There will be more work to be done in terms of the application of these passports, but we want a European-wide, interoperable portal where people can register the fact that they have been vaccinated, that they had a negative PCR test or they have recovered from Covid. So, I think, that is the next stage.
"That is something Ireland is going to participate in - we are going to participate in that European-wide framework. We will work through this."
The Taoiseach also confirmed that Ireland could see the reopening of international travel by the end of summer, however, he said it will be dependent on the success of the vaccination programme and case numbers.

Traffic light system: red, amber and green list countries – where can I go on holiday abroad? – Which? News

The government has said that travellers returning from green list countries under its traffic light system this summer will still need to pay for tests. Previous Which? research has found private test requirements can add hundreds of pounds to the cost of a trip.
From 17 May the government plans to operate a traffic light system of red, amber and green for all countries and individual islands. That date remains dependent on health data, and is the earliest international travel can resume. When the traffic light system is launched the current ban on non-essential travel will be removed.
Countries and islands will be assigned colours based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, including vaccination numbers and infection rates. Variants and the ability of the country to identify variants will also be considered.

The Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) are calling on Government to support and engage with the EU and implement Digital Green Certificates as soon as possible, which could allow travel to resume within the EU later this year. The ITAA believe that these certificates could help to repair some of the damage caused to the Irish travel sector as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Airlines get ready for take off as COVID-weary flock to book flights
It’s lift-off for summer holidays abroad as soon as next month as airlines bump up flights and the Government prepares to shut down compulsory hotel quarantine.
And even though it’s only 48 hours since Taoiseach Micheál Martin announced it may be ‘possible’ for COVID-weary Irish sun worshippers to escape to the sun, plans are under way that could make a summer exodus abroad a reality.
One minister told the Irish Mail on Sunday: ‘[Taoiseach] Micheál Martin was being conservative when he said on Friday that foreign holidays would be possible by July.
