GENEVA: The World Health Organization said Tuesday that a variant of Covid-19 feared to be contributing to a surge in coronavirus cases in India has been found in over a dozen countries.
The UN health agency said the B.1.617 variant of Covid-19 first found in India had as of Tuesday been detected in over 1,200 sequences uploaded to the GISAID open-access database "from at least 17 countries".
"Most sequences were uploaded from India, the United Kingdom, USA and Singapore," the WHO said in its weekly epidemiological update on the pandemic.
The WHO recently listed B.1.617 -- which counts several sub-lineages with slightly different mutations and characteristics -- as a "variant of interest".

A study has found that people who have been vaccinated with Covaxin have protection against the double mutant (B.1.617) variant first found in India. A preprint of the study carried out by ICMR and Bharat Biotech researchers has been posted in
biorXiv. Preprints are yet to be peer-reviewed and published in medical journals.

Guwahati: Amid the rising number of Covid-19 cases in Assam, samples of the double mutant variant of novel coronavirus have been found at the Dibrugarh Airport, the first such detection in the northeastern region, officials said on Friday.
Health officials said that before Assam, the double mutant strain was founda in Maharashtra, Delhi and West Bengal.
Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted:
"Recent samples from Dibrugarh Airport are positive for B.1.617 strain or the Indian double mutant (L452R and E484Q) strain of SARS-Cov-2. We need to be very very careful."

As someone, who is currently recovering from a deadly bout of coronavirus infection, I am saying this with the conviction of my own personal experience that the so-called ‘second wave’ of coronavirus is far more infectious and vengeful than the first one. It has been over 10 days since I was diagnosed COVID-positive, and I continue to suffer from classic symptoms of coronavirus, including nagging dry cough, loss of sense of smell and taste, and extreme weakness. While the severity of my symptoms has reduced, I am still not fully okay and I might even suffer from consequences of what is called ‘long Covid’ or lingering long-term health damage, all this in my early 30s.

JERUSALEM: Israel has registered eight cases of a coronavirus variant first identified in India and believes that the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is at least partially effective against it, an Israeli health official said on Tuesday.
An initial seven cases of the Indian variant were detected in Israel last week among people arriving from abroad and who have since undergone preliminary testing, the Health Ministry said.
"The impression is that the Pfizer vaccine has efficacy against it, albeit a reduced efficacy," the ministry's director-general, Hezi Levy, told Kan public radio, saying the number of cases of the variant in Israel now stood at eight.
