After Maharashtra's 'Double Mutant', New Variant of 'Immune Escape' Virus Found in West Bengal: Report
Scientists have reported that a new lineage of SARS-CoV-2, named B.1.618, has been found in India.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, after the B.1.617 “new mutant variant” was found in more than 60 per cent of cases sampled for genome sequencing in Maharashtra, B.1.618, the new variant, has been growing significantly in West Bengal.
A separate report by India Today states that it is characterised by a distinct set of genetic variants including E484K, and is being called a major immune escape variant, that is it can escape immunity even if a person has contracted the virus before and has the ability to produce antibodies against it.

What's Behind False Negatives and Why is RT-PCR Failing to Detect Covid Infections in Some Cases?

Experts say more than the new coronavirus variant(s), faulty swab sample collection by untrained staff and wrong timing of testing are likely to be the main reasons.

RT-PCR tests 'do not miss any mutant strains' - The Hindu BusinessLine

The RT-PCR tests used in India do not miss the UK, Brazil, South Africa or the Double Mutant variants of the Covid-19 virus as they target more than two genes, the Health Ministry said on Friday. Sensitivity and specificity of the RT-PCR tests remain the same as earlier, it added.
The detection of these mutations does not change the management strategy, which is to test, track, trace and treat. The use of masks remains the most important shield to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the Ministry added.

In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic brought the world literally to a standstill, with infections in the millions and deaths of more than 1.8 million people. But then, another one million died in the next three months. The number of Covid-19 deaths now stands at 2,887,039 as of April 7, 2021, and the number keeps increasing every day.
This, of course, may not be a very high figure compared to some other pandemics, like the Black Death or the Spanish Flu. The former killed as many as 225 million people in four years in 1347-1351, while the latter killed 50 million people in 2 years in 1918-1919. In recent times, the Swine Flu killed between 151,700-575,400 people in 2009-2010, while the Ebola virus killed only 11,300 people in 2014-2016. The Asian Flu (H2N2) killed 1.1 million people in 1957-1958, and the Hongkong Flu (H3N2) killed 1 million people in 1968-1970. Such virus-related deaths otherwise suggest the irregular regularity of pandemics, and since some of the viruses become deadly through mutation, there is no escape from them. They co-evolve and live with other living beings.

'Double Mutant' COVID-19 Variant Found in US - Guardian Liberty Voice

The COVID-19 virus has been running rampant around the world for over a year now. On March 24, 2021, scientists discovered a “double mutant” variant in India. Shortly afterward, scientists at the Stanford lab in California identified the new double variant in the United States.
The patient with the “double mutant” strain is from the San Francisco Bay Area. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have been tracking the various strains of the virus. Two other worrisome mutations have been identified and are closely being tracked in the U.S.
These are the L452R and the E484Q strains. The L452R strain is also known as the California variant. This strain is believed to make COVID-19 more infectious. It could also reduce a person’s immunity who has been vaccinated.

Doctors worry about new double mutant strain of COVID-19

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Variants of the novel coronavirus are teaming up, so to speak. A so-called “double mutant” is making headlines.
Dr. Bob Garry is a Tulane University virologist and microbiologist who reacted to the two mutations found in one virus.
“This one has two mutations that we’ve been looking at for a while and they are in some important parts of the molecule that lets the virus attach to cells, so we have to keep an eye on them,” said Garry.

First Case Of 'Double Mutant' COVID Variant Detected In US - Cerritos Community News

(NORWALK VOICE) A new “double mutant” variant of the COVID-19 virus that could potentially be more infectious has been confirmed for the first time in the United States, raising red flags for researchers.
The Stanford Clinical Virology Lab identified one case of the new variant — which first emerged in India — in California, officials announced to the San Fransisco Chronicle over the weekend.
At least seven other purported cases of the same variant are also under investigation in the Bay Area.
According to officials, the new strain has been dubbed the “double mutant” because it carries two mutations in the virus that helps it latch onto cells. The “double mutant” variant has been found in at least 20 percent of cases traced back to Maharashtra, India’s hardest-hit state that has seen a new surge in cases.
