Economist: AMLO's Cantinflan show trial; Le Monde: Mexico's mafiocracy

The Economist column was critical of the August 1 referendum at which Mexicans will be asked, in a roundabout way, whether the five most recent past presidents – blamed by President López Obrador for all manner of problems the country faces today – should be investigated for corruption.
The referendum question – translated by
The Economist as: Are you in agreement or not that appropriate actions in accordance with the constitutional and legal framework be carried out in order to undertake actions of clarification of political decisions taken in the past by political actors, aimed at guaranteeing justice and the rights of the possible victims? – is one that “might have been devised by Cantinflas, a comic actor who turned the Mexican taste for circumlocution into an absurdist art form,” the British newspaper said.

Will Crime Rates Decrease If Mexico Legalizes Marijuana?

Is Adult-use Cannabis Legal in Mexico?
Adult-use cannabis is not yet legal in Mexico. In November of 2020, the Mexican upper house passed a legalization bill, but it had to go through another vote after adding a few changes. Recently the lower house approved draft legislation that will likely be passed in the upper house and then sent to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. While many conservatives complain that this will lead to drug addiction and other violent crimes, marijuana advocates say it’s a step in the right direction.
Zara Snapp, a marijuana activist, from the NGO ‘Instituto RIA’ (which seeks to reform Mexico’s drug laws), believes the US could legalize cannabis in the next few years. For Snapp,  the reason for legalizing cannabis in Mexico is more important though. “Instead of the government wasting its limited resources on persecuting and going after people who use cannabis, hopefully, the police would have greater time to really go after the high-impact crimes that concern all of us; kidnapping, extortion, corruption, disappearances, homicide.”

Medical Marijuana (MJNA) - Raúl Elizalde On The Benefits Of Cannabis Legalization In Mexico, Potentially The Biggest Market In The World

Last November, the Mexican Senate passed a recreational cannabis project, taking the first step on the road of potentially creating the biggest cannabis market in the world.
Most recently, the Chamber of Deputies passed the bill with a few changes. The amended bill was supposed to be approved quickly, but Mexican Senate President Eduardo Ramírez revealed two weeks ago there is no consensus on the changes made by the Chamber of Deputies.
While it may take longer than expected, Ramírez is enthusiastic about the bill being approved before April 20, when the Congressional season and the current Congressional term ends.
