Various members of the Ryerson University community are now referring to the Toronto post-secondary institution as "X University" due to its namesake's connection to the residential school system in Canada.
There have long been demands for the university to change its name and remove the statue of Egerton Ryerson — a historical Canadian teacher and minister — from its campus, which have been reignited in the wake of the discovery of the remains of 215 children on the property of the old Kamloops Indigenous Residential School last week.

Demonstrators in Toronto staged a sit-in in front of the Egerton Ryerson statue on the downtown university's campus Monday to mourn and pay tribute to the 215 children found buried in an unmarked grave at Kamloops Indigenous Residential School last week.
The sit-in was organized by a group of "Indigenous Students fighting for social justice & human rights @ X University," a name given to the school by students who've chosen to refrain from calling it Ryerson due to the historical figure's role in designing the residential school system.

A publication run by students in Ryerson's journalism program won't be using the university's name in its title until at least the end of the winter semester while the school examines the legacy of Egerton Ryerson and his role in the establishment of residential schools.
The publication, officially called the Ryerson Review of Journalism (RRJ), announced Thursday that it will be referred to as the [ ] Review of Journalism (the Review or the [ ]RJ for short) going forward while a presidential task force examines Egerton Ryerson's history and legacy, the findings of which are expected to be released in the summer of 2021.
