with triple dimgit temperatures. what's being done to keep people safe in these dangerous temperatures? >> reporter: the city of atlanta and other major cities across the u.s. have had no choice with the dangerously high temperatures and the humidity but to open cooling centers, blasting folks with air conditioning and giving them water to help give them a break from this heat. right now, the sun is starting to go down. we are feeling a breeze here. we are feeling the coolest we felt all day here across the belt in atlanta. people are walking and exercising, walking dogs as well. during the peak heat of 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., we tested out the temperature on the pavement. outside the air temperature was 90. on the pavement, close to 120 degrees. that's brutal. here is what folks had to tell
