KUALA LUMPUR – National athletes today ushered in Syawal on a moderate scale at the quarantine-based national training camp, as they could not celebrate Aidilfitri with their families.
In a posting on the NSC official Facebook page, its director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail was seen performing Aidilfitri prayers with national athletes and then celebrating at Cafe Atlet in Bukit Jalil, partaking in delicacies such as lemang, ketupat and rendang.

“To all national athletes, let’s all come together and fight this pandemic for the sake of our beloved Malaysia. Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri. We look after each other; we look after our families,” said Shapawi in his video-taped Raya message.

Other Sports: It's going to be Raya in the training camp for national athletes

No hue and cry: Gymnast Farah Ann and diver Nur Dhabitah are among the athletes who will be home-based in Bukit Jalil.
KUALA LUMPUR: National athletes will be celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Bukit Jalil as they are not allowed to go out from the training premises.
But they are not making a hue and cry as they know these are the sacrifices that they have to make amid the Covid-19 pandemic in order to be focused on their preparation for the upcoming multisport Games – the Tokyo Olympics and Hanoi SEA Games.
Some of the athletes, who will be home-based in Bukit Jalil, include Olympians Nur Dhabitah Sabri (diver), Farah Ann Abdul Hadi (artistic gymnast) and Khairul Anuar Mohamad (archer).

Kuala Lumpur: Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican
(pic) is expecting more athletes to join the 12 national athletes who have qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in July.
The growing optimism stems from 23 athletes under the Road To Tokyo (RTT) 2020 programme are now hunting for slots in the Games through various qualifying processes which are still going on until June. “As an example, in badminton, Lee Zii Jia has obtained his ticket (to Olympics) which I did not include in the list of 12 athletes as the qualifying process is still open.

Deferred dreams: What COVID taught three Olympic athletes

The Tokyo Olympics was arguably the biggest sporting casualty of the coronavirus pandemic, postponed in March in an unprecedented move as a third of the world was plunged into COVID-19-related lockdowns.
More than 11,000 elite athletes from 33 different sports were due to compete in the games – for most the pinnacle of sporting achievement.
A pared-down Olympics is now scheduled to be held for two weeks from July 23, 2021, with some adjustments for the pandemic. The Paralympics will follow.
