TREATMENT PLANT. 16 WAPT'S ROSS ADAMS JOINS US LIVE WITH DETAILS. ROSS... THE MAYOR SAYS THE CITY WAS PLANNING TO CONSTRUCT COVERING AT OB CURTIS PLANT TO PROTECT EQUIPMENT FROM THE EXTREME WEATHER. BUT THEY DIDN'T GET IT DONE BEFORE THE ICE STORM HIT. RED4164 4:00-4:05 IT'S A $3 MILLION SHELTER. IT'S A SHELTER THAT GOES OVER THE EQUIPMENT THAT WE ALREADY HAVE. THE CITY COUNCIL RECENTLY APPROVED A $3 MILLION CONTRACT TO HEMPHILL CONSTRUCTION TO BUILD A COVERING OVER EQUIPMENT AT THE OB CURTIS WATER TREATMENT PLANT, WHERE THE CURRENT WATER CRISIS STARTED. RED4164 3:47-3:56 MAYOR CHOKWE ANTAR LUMUMBA THE ENGINEERING HAS ALREADY HAPPENED. THIS IS A PURCHASE. WE'RE WAITING ON CONSTRUCTION BUT THIS WEATHER CAME BEFORE THAT COULD HAPPEN. ENGINEERING 9794 3:19-3:30 DR. CHARLES WILLIAMS/PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR WHAT THIS MEMBRANE ENCLOSURE AND STRUCTURE IT WILL ALLOW US TO HELP BASICALLY KEEP THE TEMPERATURE AT A CERTAIN CLIMATE DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS AND ALSO DURING THE WINTER. THE QUESTION IS IF THAT PROJECT HAD BEEN COMPLETED BEFORE FEBRUARY'S ICE STORM, WOULD THOSE COVERINGS HAVE PREVENTED A MAJOR SHUT DOWN AT THE PLANT THAT'S LEFT THOUSANDS WITHOUT WATER FOR MORE THAN TWO WEEKS.? ENGINEERING 9794 1:40-1:45 NOT NECESSARILY. I THINK THIS IS ATTRIBUTED TO OTHER ISSUES AT THE PLANT PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR DR. CHARLES WILLIAMS SAID IF THAT HOUSING HAD BEEN BUILT BEFORE THE STORM, IT WOULD NOT OF HELPED PREVENT A CATASTROPHIC SHUT DOWN. 3:55-4:03 AND I THINK IT WILL HELP MOVING FORWARD BUT I CAN'T NECESSARILY SAY THAT WHY IS THE PRIMARY ISSUE AS IT RELATES TO WHAT HAPPENED AT THE PLANT. CITY LEADERS HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING ADDING THE COVERING AT THE WATER PLANT FOR MORE THAN FOUR YEARS. 1:23-1:35 AND SO IT'S READILY AVAILABLE NOW FOR US TO START CONSTRUCTING ON IT. AND WE HOPE BY THE END OF THIS YEAR OR CLOSE TO EARLY NEXT YEAR IT SHOULD BE COMPLETED. CITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT SAYS HE WANTS TO HEAR FROM THE MAYORS OFFICE AND PUBLIC WORKS ABOUT WHY THIS PROJECT HADN'T ALREADY BEEN DONE. ROSSADAMS 16 WAPT
