First lets start with Franklin Buchanan, since he was on one of our ironclads here in Hampton Roads. Franklin buchanan was born on september 17, 1800 in baltimore, maryland. His father the was founder of the Maryland Medical Society and his grandfather was a signer of the declaration of independence. So he comes from a wellheeled family. He will become a midshipment at age 15 in 1815 and will serve with distinction by 1844. He will be promoted to captain, and he will be named the first superintendent of the United States Naval Academy in annapolis. He is the founder in many ways of that school. In 1847 he will resign from that post so he can serve actively in the mexican war, which again he does with ....
