War of the Gargantuas by Forest Taylor Legendary Entertainment's so-called "Monsterverse" has been the strangest cinematic universe to date. After a somber and fairly serious beginning with Gareth Edwards' Godzilla, the series has followed Toho's lead and made every subsequent film increasingly dumber and sillier. This all culminates with Adam Wingard's (You're Next, The Guest) Godzilla vs. Kong, which might just be the dumbest and silliest one yet. The film is loud and obnoxious, the story is incomprehensible, and the action wears tiresome. However, there are some unexpected pleasures to be found in just how far it's willing to go with its ridiculous premise.
Weekend Box Office: âDemon Slayerâ Nears $40 Million But âMortal Kombatâ Tumbles Share to Facebook Funimation and Warner Bros. In other domestic box office news that isnât about Wrath of Man ($8.1 million, or exactly what would be expected of a Jason Statham actioner under normal circumstances, Funimationâs export of Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train earned another $3 million (-54%) in weekend three. The R-rated, animated action fantasy, a direct continuation of a popular anime (think Fight the Future debuting theatrically between season five and season six of The X-Files) has earned $39.565 million in 17 days. Thatâs past the (unadjusted-for-inflation) $37 million domestic cume of Guillermo del Toroâs
Friday Box Office: âGodzilla Vs. Kongâ Plunges 67% But Tops $60 Million Share to Facebook Godzilla Vs. Kong held better on its second Friday than Godzilla and King of the Monsters. Godzilla Vs. Kong earned an additional $3.88 million at the domestic box office, dropping 67% from its initial $11.6 million Friday gross. The size of the drop is partially due to last Friday being Good Friday, the Adam Wingard-directed MonsterVerse sequel also opened on a Wednesday. That said, the film still passed $60 million domestic yesterday, topping Tenet ($58 million) and becoming the biggest Covid-era domestic earner. Of note, four out of the five top domestic grossers of this grim era (
âGodzilla Vs. Kongâ Resurrects Box Office With $49M Debut Share to Facebook Godzilla Vs. Kong should be past $300 million worldwide by Monday or Tuesday. In an ironic/appropriate development, the domestic box office has roared back to life on Easter weekend thanks to the powerhouse (especially on a Covid-curve) debut of Godzilla Vs. Kong. Warner Bros. and Legendaryâs well-reviewed (79% fresh and 6.5/10 from Rotten Tomatoes) and well-received (an A from Cinemascore including an A+ from those under 18) monster mash grossed $32.2 million over the Fri-Sun portion of whatâll turn out to be a $48.5 million Wed-Sun/$52 million Wed-Mon Easter weekend haul. Thatâs (by far) the biggest opening weekend for any movie in North America in the Covid era. With around $52 million domestic by tomorrow, itâll quickly pass
Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Zack Snyder fans successfully orchestrated a campaign to get Warner Bros.’ attention and convince the studio to release Zack Snyder’s director’s cut version of Justice League—which turned into the extremely expensive and marginally improved Zack Snyder’s Justice League—proving once and for all that if a fanbase is loud enough and pushy enough, they can make any ridiculous dream a reality (provided their dream coincides with a movie studio feeling an overwhelming sense of desperation over how much Content is available on its new streaming platform). The point is: They did it. It worked. They tweeted enough hashtags and got in enough people’s replies and made so much noise that Warner Bros. decided that it actually made sense to throw millions and millions of dollars at shutting them up (but in a nice way). Now… it’s happening again.
