here tonight. >> that's not true. >> oh, it is very true. i am not going to bow to anyone when we have a president of the united states who disrespects the constitution. it's important to say that the president said, donald trump said, it's okay to suspend the constitution. now, the oath you take is to preserve, protect and defend, not suspend. i will always stand up for our constitution regardless of the political pressure. >> when it comes to whether president trump should serve or not, i trust the american people. let them vote. let them decide. but what they will tell you is that it is time for a new generational conservative leader. we have to look at the fact that three quarters of americans don't want a rematch between trump and biden. and we have to face the fact that trump is the most disliked politician in america. we can't win a general election that way.

from a new generation. >> yeah, they make a generational. or in the case of i believe ron desantis trying to cite donald trump is distracted, but really he's a great guy, he's a good guy. but ultimately, none of these people are going up on the stage wednesday to offer americans something different. why? because we are so far removed from that debate in this country. there is not going to be any genuine conversation about policy. to kind of go back to how we started the conversation this evening about bret baier and martha maccallum. they share the stage with these people. how this conversation unfolds wednesday is going to be more about them than it is about these candidates. because if they go up there and try to pretend that they want to ask legitimate questions about policy and what do you think about health care or bidenomics, which is what we think of back ten, 15 years ago, that is different than going up there and asking every single person on that stage the questions about the fundamental identity of this country, and our democracy. and whether you are committed to that or whether you are not.

imean, ijust... ifind it extraordinary that a generation — and it is particularly, often, generational — who are so happy to accuse young people and the culture in general of being fragile and of being unresilient have such a hard time when people say that the things that they have deliberately politically come out about and discussed with passion and even vitriol, they then have to hear consequential reactions to that. i just... ifind it extraordinary and quite boring. and so, yeah, i think cancel culture is really an idea that has emerged because it*s alliterative and easy to talk about without nuance. and i think that i*m interested in specific examples of human beings trying to treat each other well. and i think they*re mostly fine... just one more example. the critic and sort of culture commentator kate copstick, she*s particularly interested in comedy. now, i mean, actually,

if you get indicted and the feel running against you in politics usually use it as something to attack them, but that gets to the long term. this is where we will see the debate, whether trump is there or not, what republicans say if there's another indictment. and about these, will they use this as an opportunity to do the normal things you do in politics which is to criticize somebody you're running against who is under water like this. >> let's stay with the republicans for one second, and doug, we'll go back to you because there was a lot of talk that trump was there on the ground in iowa for a couple hours yesterday. desantis, nikki haley, all these other candidates were there for many hours, shaging hands, do the more traditional, what we would traditionally see at the iowa state fair. do you think that desantis specifically was able to kind of maximize that face-to-face time? he had his family, he's making this kind of generational, you know, argument, comparing himself to trump and biden.
